Elliot I don't think it's selfish of you to want to have more creative control over your book. I think that's great! I think that's why I like independent music artists for example cuz you can tell their music has more of their input than a record company. Sure self publishing is expensive & takes more work. But when your book blows up in sales/popularity ( & it will) all that time you put into will pay off. Plus you can benefit more financially too. I think traditional publishing through a company/agent is good for those who may not have the money & resources to self publish. But I like that you are in this for the love of fantasy genre & writing. Have a bless day my friend 😊🙌🌠.

Thank you so much!!! I’m definitely in it because I love fantasy and writing, and I’m really happy that shows :) It can be quite expensive to self-publish (if someone takes all the necessary steps) but, like you said, that hard work and investment often pays off in the long run 😊

We are definitely living in a time when self publishing ensures everything about your work is yours. One of my favorite books is self published and I felt good knowing when I bought it, 75% of the money I spent went to the author (in his case).

I feel like fewer people see self-publishing as something inferior these days. Knowing how much money comes into the publisher's pocket vs the author is one of the main reasons why it seems smart to do the work yourself if you have the time, money and knowledge. Personally, I'm in such a turmoil over this and have no idea what's going to be better for my novel. Writing a debut especially contributes to self-doubt because if someone professional had not stamped it with their approval can I really be confident that it's a good book?
@ebnovels
@ebnovels 5 лет назад
That question is such a hard thing to overcome as a writer. I think it’s difficult to answer even if you do have a publisher backing you! What I will say is that-of course-everyone’s opinions are different. There are books that most people love that I hate, and books a lot of people think are mediocre that I love. As long as the mechanics are there and the general storytelling elements are good, then it comes down to preference, tone, and originality. Sort of! There’s more to it than that, but whatever path you go with, I hope you feel great with it 💕

You really nailed all the reasons why I also chose self-publishing. Freedom is so much more important than money. How do they dare change an amazing story just so it can fit the market? That's why so many books are utterly boring with the same kind of MC ad nauseam. Btw, your cover is beautiful. And as a librarian, I can say that people choose a book by its cover.

I totally respect and understand your decision to self-publish. I think they are tons of pros and cons to each side, and it all just comes to down to the author and what they are most comfortable with--which is the most important thing. I also have seen (particularly in fantasy) so many fantastic self-published books comes out these past few years, and a few of my favorite books this year have actually been self-published! It's entirely possible to have high quality "traditionally-published" quality books in self-pub. I wish you the best! :)

Not judging a book by its cover is something I only follow metaphorically 😂 In the most literal sense, you bet I judge a book by its cover hahaha! I really loved listening to your thought process on this decision, and it is perfectly fine to want the most/all control on your own work. I always feel for authors who are stuck with covers they despise or in situations they can't get out of over their own work. I am so glad you mentioned V.E. Schwab because when I think of the obstacles of traditionally publishing- I think of her. I started reading her books before she was really big like I think she is now and I started on her series, The Archived, which I believe is no longer in print in some form. She is very open about when she has an up or down publishing wise and basically what I am getting at is that the whole thing sounds so stressful lol. I wish you the absolute best with your novel and I commend literally anyone who gets a book published great video as per usual
@ebnovels
@ebnovels 5 лет назад
Thank you-your support always means so much! I saw V.E. Schwab speak at an event I went to for the release of A Conjuring of Light, and was surprised to find out how much of a struggle it was for her. So often people only see the success, and they don’t actually realize how much work went into that or how much the author had to do to get where they are. Also, metaphorically is the best way to describe the cover situation 😆

I’m so glad you made this video. I also chose to self publish and even though I like having more freedom, it still scares me that people will think my work is amateurish or that I’m never going to have the same prestige as traditionally published authors. I’ve done my research and I really respect indie authors like you who go above and beyond to make their books look professional and handle their marketing. Self publishing does have its cons, but I just couldn’t live with myself if my book didn’t turn out exactly how I wanted it.
@ebnovels

It's good that you're very honest with yourself and us about both options, because you said why you specifically chose self publishing. I think traditional publishing is a good option for someone who doesn't necessarily have an established audience in the bookish community, so the publisher takes care of a lot of the marketing process; however I must say that even a lot of traditionally published authors are very active on social media and other platforms nowadays and in the end I think self promo does make a difference in sales. Schwab spoke the truth, lack of balance is setting up both writers and publishers for failure in the long run.
@ebnovels

I appreciate that even while V.E. Schwab has success with traditionally publishing, she’s still honest about the hurtles that she had to overcome to get there. I’ve found that both routes are good for various reasons and it’s important for people to do the research and weigh the pros and cons for themselves :)

I went the self-publishing route for many of the same reasons you've spoken about. I had stories to tell and didn't want to wait as long as five or six years for my books to - possibly - come out in print . As a result, I now have seven novels available on Amazon as eBooks and while I'm not making a fortune from sales, that wasn't my goal in the first place. My goal was simply to tell my stories in the hope that people who read them would find them interesting and maybe even learn something about the human condition along the way. Good luck...

I think the most important reason to go with a publisher is marketing. Publishers will take care of a campaign, posters, they have deals with bookstores to showcase books on the best places. Even though self-publishing allows more control and a larger sale percentage, a publishing house will sell way more books and create a much larger reader-base. Publishers have no issue with authors supplying their art and whatnot, unless it's really bad.

Here's how I do it (or plan to do it when getting back into publishing things, I've been out of the game for years for legal and personal reasons): Self publishing books: - I want to illustrate MY WAY, in one of the styles I do that I CHOOSE with WHAT I WANT TO GO IN IT - I want to put notes and afterwords in - Are part of either one of my main series' - I KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM - Contain themes such as LGBT+ or mental health that traditional publishers would scoff at Traditionally publishing books: - I don't really care what's on the cover, anything will work for me - I don't care if the series continues, it can work well alone or with more - Niche non-fiction book I'd prefer was in stores as well as online - I'm not AS ATTACHED to the content that I went to keep, cut and perfect myself, so I can basically be fine with someone else potentially butchering my work I really enjoy the way you put it in this video. You really told the truth about how unfair traditional publishing is. I had no idea until recently how lucky I was that the first time I ever went to traditionally publish I was accepted straight away based on three chapters with no agent to the first place I submitted to. I didn't go with them in the end for all of the reasons you've listed and it's just so great to hear someone put it so bluntly.

My Partner self-publishes using Amazon platform and YTD 2020 daily averages of KU daily pages read royalty $126 and Kindle daily royalty $138 and paperback daily average royalty $19. Bottom line:If we finish the year with 100,000 in royalties and expenses of 10,000 netting 90,000 pre-tax is that considered mid-lister ? I have a lot of respect for self published authors because the ones working to be successful have to wear so many caps. When your self published you're not just an author, you have to hire editors, cover designers, type setters and do 100% of your own marketing plus all the other minutia that comes with book production. While it's gotten a lot easier to self- publish a book, doing it well is a lot of work and I have to give props to the people doing that

I do think many people involved in traditional publishing want to make sure great stories are told, but it is a business. Making money has to happen for the business to continue, and I can’t fault them for choosing what they think will be the most profitable. That doesn’t change the fact that I want creative control over everything though! 😆

Seems like the advance would be payment enough and any royalties after just cherry. Perhaps using the advance to self publish a different title. I was reading some comments and I was under the impression that traditional publishing was the costly route. If I were to self publish I wouldn't want to cut edges or half ass it so for now it seems to be the untenable option.

A bit late but I also thought I go the self publishing route. I wish I would have not. Marketing is just the major issue for me. I have followed all the steps indie authors do and none of them work for me. Paid for ads - not helping. Get ARC reviews - Paid on NetGalley. More than 50 have gotten it. Only 4 have left a review (mostly positive). Asked nearly all of them to leave a review but nope, never heard back nor got more reviews. create a blog - not working. create a twitter account - did nothing. exchange with other authors for promotion - nothing. create a epress kit - lost money. So, yes. Self-publishing is not working for me. My book is out for nearly a year and had sold roughly 10.

I feel like the traditional publishing route has more and better support for significantly less cost which is a huge plus to me. You do end up having to do more work up front than “back in the day.” The lack of control does get overblown as well if you see what traditional published authors have to say. I also don’t trust myself to have the fullest sense of what’s best since other people do all of this for a living. Things like not being able to switch publishers or go online are things you can work out in the contract as well; they’re not automatic. Not that your decision is wrong, but misinformation abounds with this one.
@ebnovels
@ebnovels 5 лет назад
Given that many authors have been open about the lack of control they’ve had within their contracts, it’s pretty clear that those situations do occur. Here’s something V.E. Schwab shares: veschwab.wordpress.com/category/publishing-2/ Here’s an interview with Judson Roberts about his experiences with a big publishing company: www.johndbrown.com/interview-with-author-judson-roberts/ So I have “seen what traditionally published authors” have to say. It aligns with what I’ve said in the video. Other authors will have nothing but positive experiences. However, not every author has that turnout, and thus it’s not misinformation to share the potential for a negative outcome.

Going off of Writing Excuses (Dan Wells, Mary Robinette Kowal, Howard Tayler, and Brandon Sanderson) and other Writing RU-vidrs who are traditionally published (bookishpixie, Kim Chance) I have come across far more people saying that this is a misrepresentation of the facts. All of the above that I wrote has come from published authors giving advice to others to help them avoid the problems you mentioned, since they are avoidable. A lot of this is also in Brandon Sanderson's BSU writing course that you can watch online with the intent of helping his students navigate traditional publishing. It's not misinformation to say it's a problem, but it's a common thing with self publishing authors to act like you lose all agency when you traditionally publish and that isn't true, nor is it a claim that comes from experience. It has the potential to scare people out of a choice that could be better for them and I don't think that's helpful or informative.

I’ve listened to the Sanderson lectures and they’re great. Every author has a different experience, and I mentioned multiple times in this video that there’s a reason many traditionally published books are better than self published books. You initially said “misinformation abounds” and it wasn’t clear if you meant in reference to this topic, or this video. If you’re referring to the video, then your most recent comment is admitting that the video isn’t misinformation as you said “it’s not misinformation to say it’s a problem.” If your referring to the topic itself, is that based on articles and websites you’ve seen filled with untrue statements? I’m not responsible for someone else’s decision when it comes to self or traditionally publishing. If a person watches one video about why someone chose one path over the other and does no other research, then is “scared” into the wrong path, that’s completely on them. This was a video about my choice, unlike the video I referenced at the beginning about a side by side comparison of the two paths, which is just that: a side by side comparison, without my personal opinion put in. This video about my choice is going to have a clear bias-I picked one over the other. I did not say anything factually incorrect, however, when it comes to the potential of certain outcomes. I’d like to reiterate that it’s a potential, and not a guarantee.

My point was and is that there is a lot of misinformation about agency in traditional publishing and that anything that adds to that with claims that self-publishing is the only way to have creative control is part of the problem. Clearly you aren't responsible for every other instance, but it also seems silly to act like an individual's actions don't matter when they contribute to a repeating narrative. Saying "this has been some people's experiences" does seem quite different than building up stories about cover art and editing that you have not experienced. If I'm a travel RU-vid channel and I say "I would never go to China because I just can't deal with all the filth and pollution," my speaking from lack of experience to push a negative image about something else is an action I am accountable for. That's where the difference between a valid warning and misinformation comes into play.

Can people have creative control while traditionally publishing? Yes. Do they sometimes (please note I said sometimes, not always) lose some creative control when traditionally publishing? Yes. Both statements are true, which you yourself admitted earlier when you said “it’s not misinformation to say it’s a problem.” You yourself said it’s a problem in that sentence. Doesn’t that mean you’re now contributing to the claim based on your logic? To be clear, I don’t actually think you’re doing that. I don’t think I’m doing that either. I think we both think both options are valuable in their own way. You just originally made a statement that I was spreading misinformation, which you then said wasn’t misinformation. The cover example is something that has happened. I brought it up as an example that-as was mentioned in one of the links I provided for you earlier-can occur. It doesn’t need to happen to me to be true. As for the China example, I don’t actually think that’s applicable here, but here’s my response to that: if an individual doesn’t want to visit a place because of something about it, then they aren’t obligated to go just because they have content about travel. If their reasons for not wanting to go were completely untrue, that’d be a problem. If their reasons were based on research they had done, and that research went against their preferences, then them expressing that in a video titled something like, “why I chose not to go to China” would be fine, so long as they didn’t say anything factually untrue.

there are probably a 1000 books that may be great that i haven't read because of the stupid covers. I may check them out on rare occasions due to 5 stars and more than 100 reviews.

How the hell can you judge a book by just reading the first couple of pages? Crime & Punishment doesn't get interesting until page 72!

If you ever need advice, reach out to Michael J. Sullivan. He jumps back and forth between major publishers and self publishing. His current series is set for 6 books and he’s self publishing the final three. @feeney86

Elliot Brooks Yes- it has to do with the publisher wanting certain rights like ebooks or something. You could probably find his reasoning. He’s said it in a blog post or email or something. His wife his his editor and runs the business side of things and they agreed they’d make more money self publishing the three remaining from the six. I know he writes the entire series ahead of time each time as well.

If it takes more than 3 years for the agent to find a publisher, wouldn't that mean they are bad at their job? V.E. Schwab is wrong to blame the publishing companies. Say by some miracle, they offer you $50k for your book. It's up to the author and their agent to be smart and negotiate to bring that offer down to a more realistic amount.

I disagree with self-published novels having a higher chance of better content. Anyone can self publish, meaning there isn't much refinement. The fantasy genre has many failures as well, cringe stories, the YA fantasy genre especially - I would trust any other genre in the indie market and there'd be a better turn out (that I'd I agree, ex: Savannah Brown) Indie novelists try too hard to make their stories sell, if this was changed to just trusting the story - I'd have no problem.

I don’t think that self-published books are going to be better. There are definitely a lot of self-published books that aren’t good.

You don't sound like a control freak to me. Or... I'm a control freak, too, an I just can't see it? That's possible. After all, I'm also creating my own cover... but then again, I'd been an illustrator, designer, and marketer in my former life... yeah... I'm a control freak -- LOL! But my book will be *my* book.

There is literally nothing appealing about traditional publishing. Especially since you can publish print on demand books on Amazon for nothing.

You focus way too much on the negatives of traditional publishing to justify your decision.
