Killing it with the content lately, Nick! You hit the nail on the head when it comes to physical vs digital debate. I have a lot of games from 360 era on, I traded in or sold a lot of my retro stuff as a kid but since 2020 I have been slowly re-buying a lot of the games I loved as a kid in physical form.
Hey I made the intro!! 💥 The Switch is my favorite modern console to collect for, and 100% yeah -0 the nostalgia of Nintendo is strong with me. A piece of my childhood still exists in the modern day. Great job on the video man - so awesome to see you back making vids!
Thank you so much for the support brotha! A benefit of collecting on the switch also is that so many of the games have the full game in the cartridge itself so it’s not just a disc that’s basically a download key!
I wish I still had all of my old games. I have the games I lost, but they’re not MY games. Not the games I bought, got for Christmas, etc. still reeling over my mom selling my Genesis and my 70+ game collection for it when I moved out for college for $30.
Jeff hasn't responded so I (his wife) will give the answer: we have more autographed games than we can count! 😅 My favorites are "Breath of the Wild" & "Tears of the Kingdom" autograped by Patricia Summersett ("Princess Zelda"). ❤❤❤ I don't know what Jeff would count as his favorite(s). 🤔
Hey man great video! Reggie sent me! I briefly met you at Game On and definitely saw your passion for physical! Im with you! Excellent points on topic. I subbed to you as well! Keep flying that physical flag! -Dave aka Sasquatchintime
I agree with your points, Nick. Physical media I've paid for can't be taken away by the whims of some company. I still own my copy of "Donkey Kong Country" for SNES I bought when it was released. (My save files still work)!👍 Also, Jeff & I spent the day at Bookman's, and it's a good time searching for treasures amongst cartridges, discs, CDs, DVDs, magazines, books, etc. Nothing replaces that sort of fun! 😁
physical collections are awesome but the real heroes are the people dumping the ROMs and ISOs from these cartridges and discs so all of it can be accessible and spread on the internet
Started collecting more retro games and playing them again. I agree with the nostalgia factor. Always had a hard time playing emulators because it lacked that feel you get when you physically insert a physical cartridge into your gaming system and boot it up. Plus not to mention retro games will continue going up in value over the years. Great video bro!
Where did you find that amazing Earthworm Jim poster? Great video and couldn’t agree more on the nostalgia! It’s always way better when you can physically hold what you own. I had a bunch of digital movies and the platform that hosted them shut down so they’re all gone hahaha… Same with a handful of video games that lost the license to sell the digital copy. Hard to trust digital options despite their convenience.
New subscriber here! Been collecting for a fee years now, have over 1300 physical games and 2100 movies in my collection, including old PC games, sega genesis, N64, gamecube, xbox all generations and playstation all generation, the switch is by far my biggest collection around 500 games.
Sadly I was a part of that trade in culture with gamestop, eb games, and play n trade. I also lost a lot of my stuff in a flood, so I been rebuying a lot of my older childhood titles and even picking up titles that I never gave the time of day. I personally like physical copy because 1. I can play it whenever. 2. I dont need to have a subscription like Gamepass. 3. I own it. so if they services take it down, I can still play it locally. I also collect the original hardware so I can play it in its original form. You hit every point in the video!
I’ve seen this topic come up of late, & I always say that if (& when) it goes all digital, I’ll stop buying games & stay stuck in the past, as I’m old enough to say that my collection/backlog is large enough to last me the rest of my life. & thankfully, I have many of those games (Summoner 1 & 2, Shadow Hearts 1 & 2, etc) that aren’t on digital stores. Plus I have most consoles & new spares, so staying happy with my new game backlog & revisiting old games is more than enough.
That's good. I hope it'd be a long way off, but even if it were to happen in the next few years, I have a PS1/2/3/4 & brand new spares of each, as well as a Saturn/Dreamcast/Gamecube & new spares of each, + others. I've always tried to think ahead. That's one reason I'm glad I've been collecting them for decades, way before the pandemic price hikes, & whenever a given console is about to get discontinued, that's when I'd go get a spare. Quickly.
I only collect physical everything - games, CDs, Records, DVD/BRD, and books. I will say that for future console games, I’ll move to digital for Sony or MSFT. Nintendo I will always buy physical until they take that option away. For movies and music, I’ll always buy a copy. I definitely use streaming for both, but for bands/artists/movies I like, I’ll grab a copy whenever available. But, I am done buying vinyl. The prices are just too stupid at this point for 180g reissues.
9 years ago when i was about to have my kid...i sold a 500+ game nes collection, along with like 100 ps1 and lots of everything else. i still have my crt and everdrives for each system, but man...gaining an interest in this hobby again is pretty painful knowing i'll never get a fraction back what i had lol. (those prices, wow! i guess an argument can be made that our money is just half as valuable as it was then, vs games are twice as expensive) i guess i can appreciate what i do end up with. def gonna target the most important games that i grew up with. cool collection!
Oh man! I can relate somewhat as I sold quite a bit of games/consoles back in the struggle days of college. I hope you get back whatever you really miss most! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I am not a fan of LRG, but I do have to agree with you. Their customer service is horrible and the limited run gimmick is bad for series of reasons, BUT, they are a key component in keeping physical alive too. I’ve heard of super rare but never got anything from them! How are they? I appreciate you checking out the video and leaving a comment!
I have a spreadsheet dividing my wishlist between games I just would like to have, games that I'm somewhat nostalgic for, and games that defined my childhood. That way, I can narrow down my focus on the latter and pick up the games that mean the most to me without spending much money. My only real goal with collecting is to someday complete my PS1 collection of most nostalgic games. =)
That’s awesome and honestly a smart way to go about being a consumer in general! My problem is CATALOGUING my collection lol I need to do that in order to know where I’m at with it so I don’t buy duplicates 😂
I feel spending 65$ on a digital game online is like burning my Money../ Idk how people buy all there game collections online.. It’s like not owning anything.
The only thing that stops me from collecting more is the state of most CDs/DVDs. I'm thinking into investing in a machine to fix them(and I can fix stuff for my friends too).
I’m in the middle, I buy physical of games and series I really like but if there’s a chance it will leave a service and it will be delisted and I didn’t care to begin with it doesn’t bother me personally. I do still think a hybrid approach is the best especially if you are even partly gaming on PC
I partake in gamepass and so on but when a game leaves that I really like, it sucks. Especially if that game doesn’t have a physical edition. I do think being balanced is good, there’s pros and cons to both, but man delisting sucks
Physical on console is also cheaper virtually every time. How many games are still $40, $50, $60 on PSN that can be found on ebay for $15? Giving full control over your purchases to these companies will NOT END WELL FOR ANY OF US.
Great video I just wanted to say. Have a budget and do your research if your trying to complete a collection. because It's also very easy to get sucked into reselling, and become a speculator. There is too many bipolar collectors out there selling and buying back their own collection. So think hard about entering or leaving because both will cost you a lot. There is a lot of money to be made, but also a lot of money to be lost.
Gave ya a follow man. As a fellow collector / gaming content creator I agree wholeheartedly with the message here and wanna do my part to keep physical media in the minds of gamers . Cheers 🫡
Thank you so much for the follow and thank you so much for keeping physical alive! 🤘🏼 it’s important and there even more reasons that I didn’t even cover in the video.
I totally agree , I collect physical games for ps2,ps3, ps4 ,even PC and I'm all for physical media , I collect DVD and blue ray movies too, just the fact that u know u own the title makes it worth wile spending the cash I myself aren't so into digital cause at the end of the day u don't really own it
That’s what I love about it, actually OWNING the copy of the game/movie/etc. No digital takedown, it’s my game to play when I want! What’s your favorite title in your collection?
I have a few but I would say resident evil HD remastered , far cry 2 , call of duty ghosts, silent hill homecoming , largo winch , metal gear solid 3,4, GTA 5 , that's just a few
I agree and Res zero is not so bad , I even like the action horror of Res 6 , I think its good action horror game but for horror no , I enjoy so many games as a gamer its hard to pin one fav only
Just an FYI I checked on Steam...you're right. Splatterhouse 2010 isn't on it. Shame too because that game is so criminally underrated. I had it on 360 and really wish it was added to backwards compatibility. I know I'm more a digital person but this is one of the times I would switch over.
There are sales occasionally which is nice but I feel a digital game should be much less than a physical copy too. And often times the digital game is more expensive
The one thing about physical media, that I've been wondering about lately., If the possibility of 3D printing physical media is ever going to happen? Because 3D printing is the future of engineering and will get cheaper over time. I don't see why 3D printing physical media won't work, because anything is possible. Almost everything is possible. I wish that old school video games that we all grew up on, meeting the demand could happen. Just because they don't make them anymore due to licensing because digital games get delisted and they're gone forever. I stopped physical collecting when the pandemic hit. But..., I think i should retro collect again. Also, people's old vintage game systems like the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, and etc... that died due to the age of circuitry are probably in landfills waiting to be recycled/renewed. That's why 3D printing physical media someday was on my mind lately., So with all of the existing vintage video game consoles/physical cartridges that were made back in the day that have been going into landfills/3D printing being the future. That's what occurred to me about old school video games meeting the demand being a possibility with them being recycled/renewed in landfills/3D printing.
Dude solid points all around! I think that with your points though, most companies these days are doing that in some way shape or form with consoles at least like analog or hyperkin
I feel that. My GameStop I go to down the road seems to be a bit more on the customer side of things though. They always push buying games and supporting the hobby. I do hope they’re not the last ones standing as a means to get a game from a store and that major retailers still sell games physically but GameStop might be the last place.
@@NSquaredPodcast yes I am hoping so but there are some games that were not released in physical copy. Alan Wake 2 is an example and that's them type of game I like and want to play. It's hard on this day age with video games
Mario with Steroide But seriously, RU-vidrs advertised so much that everything became too expensive, unfeasible and stopped being a hobby to be a burden.
I think while some games have gone up in value/cost because they were highlighted by prominent RU-vidrs, that’s not the only reason they’ve gone up entirely. But, those games are a fraction of what’s really out there and no one needs to start their collection with $$$ priced games. Start small, buy what calls you, play what you want. Collecting isn’t a sprint, and everyone started small.
To be fair, the current traditional console market (not handheld aka Switch) has been a total bust. But let's say the game sections were gone 100%... I'd go all in on retro. I already own enough retro games to have a backlog of many years to get through. I don't get digital games, because with the EULAs around them, it's only a license to play the game, it's not a license to own a copy of the game. So digital 'purchases' are for all intensive purposes, modern day rentals. But hey, that aside, if I knew someone and they were like, "Come check out my game room bro." And it's simply a barren room with a desktop PC, and that person then showed me their Steam library they had spend thousands on, I'd feel bad for them. They are simply one correct/malicious ban away from losing EVERYTHING! Yes, a digital game library isn't just vulnerable to licenses expiring - a ban can instantly erase your entire 'purchase history'.
You should be happy and glad digital is here you can’t get refunded for any physical game you just don’t like but with digital you don’t like the game how it plays you get refunded digital has saved me from losing thousands of dollars it’s not about collecting that’s a waste of money if you hate how it plays not worth to own then don’t expect every game to play as great as Spider-Man resident evil Pac-Man street fighter tekken dragon quest dragon ball z final fantasy 16 I can keep on going on with other names think before buying just any game
Not sure where you get the idea I said just go buy every game out there physically. You know peoples digital libraries (paid for) are getting wiped on PS5 right now right? No solid cause of why it’s happening. Can’t do that with a hard copy of a game. Don’t think I ever said digital was a stupid choice either. I said the digital services were good (did you not watch the full video). If you’re a digital diehard I can see why this video upset you, but don’t misunderstand what I was saying either. You’re free to have your opinions but always remember your opinion doesn’t make you right. Other people are more than happy to collect and actually own their games. Have a good day, thanks for commenting.
@@NSquaredPodcast that’s true other people who bought digital from PlayStation got wiped out but I’m glad it didn’t happen to me I will buy physical only the only one that can be trusted with buying digital is Xbox not PlayStation not Nintendo
@@drew8235not every digital game can be refunded oh please list me the digital games that can’t be refunded you must be thinking of PlayStation in Japan everyone knows Japan doesn’t refund neither does Nintendo but digital isn’t only on PlayStation and Nintendo it’s on Steam and Xbox I was refunded over 50 times so I got no issue but maybe your from a different country that doesn’t refund anyone your problem not everyone’s problem
This video is meant to encourage those playing games to keep the physical media alive. I did acknowledge that digital has its benefits and so on in the video
@@NSquaredPodcast I enjoyed your video and it wasn't meant as a criticism. I'm all for keeping the physical side of things alive but ironically I think that digital copies will be one of the methods that we will be able to do this via the hard work of the gaming and retro community keeping but also copying and distributing old media to make it more available to a wider audience. I suppose it was more a comment on the modern trend of splitting everything into either one or the other with nothing in between. The in between is where most things truly belong.
