I do cover for spiritual reasons, and Hestia was my first inspiration. :)

I cover my hair now, not really for religious reasons even though I am Muslim.I consider my hair veil more spiritual than anything. I (a) always loved veils in European art and saw people use hair veils to appear more mystic or feminine and (b) I also got hit on for my hair and I also had long hair. My hair is thick so people would stroke my hair and call it a rope and etc. I wanted to do my hair but since my hair is thick it just wasn't worth the effort. With my hair veiled, my hair doesn't get dirty, people don't comment on my hair, and my hair doesn't get tangled or snagged on stuff.

I completely understand/agree. I also think there's something very special in maintaining control over who gets to see our hair and in what situation. The notion of the hair as being spiritually significant goes way back and across cultures, so I think it's important to maintain that in the way we treat our hair, whether we cover it or not. Thanks so much for commenting!

That's wonderful. I remember when I had long hair, it would hurt my neck because of its weight. People also liked touching it, which was okay if it was my friends who just wanted to braid it, but not my dad when he would mess it up. That sucks that you got hit on for your hair. I agree, ladies veiling in paintings always look so pretty.

I respect the Arab Culture and Muslim Women. I remember I saw a Muslim woman wearing a Hijab in the midst of a crowd. She stood out more. She look more feminine in my opinion. The veil for me is a sign of femininty.

I have found I receive more respect being veiled than non-veiled. Like you I’ve had hair issues with other people, and it is often uncomfortable comments. Once I veiled I found I was much calmer mentally, so it was an additional benefit. I love the look, I don’t know that I will do this to the end of my life, but for now it is a wonderful experience.

I completely agree. I also find it to be kind of fun watching people's internal struggle on how to treat me. Respectful for the most part, but it's also a bit funny/sad that the struggle exists in the first place. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!

I cover for energy reasons, but I also am so bored of the few easy styles to do with my very long hair, and having many different wraps makes me feel so much prettier! And I've definitely thought, why do I have my hair long if I can't wear it down, and I think I often look ugly in my buns. And so the reason for my long hair can be, all for me! Not for anyone else to see! I've had the opposite thing happen, of more people asking me out since I've covered my hair, but it's welcome.

So glad to find this talk , I'm covering my hair even though I do like the abhrahamkc faiths and go by there teachings , it's not the be all and end all of why I wanted to cover . Women should be free to cover whatever they like . And hair is a very seductive aspect of a woman ....as are breasts , we can choose when we want to show it . It also has helped me work more on my inner beauty rather than making all the focus about the external . In today's society I admire women who have the courage to cover .

You've said it exactly. What's most important is figuring out what makes us feel beautiful for ourselves, not what others tell us is beautiful. I also almost never wear makeup even though I love the stuff. The women in my family never wore it, and I'm honestly just too lazy. Side note: one of my biggest heros is Dita Von Tease. She's known for her sexiness, yet have you ever noticed how modestly she dresses out on the street? I love that.

Beautiful story Thanks for sharing I am born Muslim but never covered my hair though my mom and grandmother and aunts all did But my mom said it's up to me Then suddenly my soulmate husband died and I am a very young widow and people start saying you so pretty you can marry again And as I was in so much pain as I waited long for my soulmate husband to get married to me And we were so happy and to be taken away was beyond words Also our son was only 9years of age but a very young 9 I then just decided after my mourning period in Islam is 40days I would continue to wear the scarf as I noticed I felt protected in my scarf And I hoped I would draw less attention from men Esp thinking now I am a widow I am available. I then discovered through my Suffi Master that a lady should not cut her hair as her power lies in keeping her hair long But he advised to keep it in a bun or covered also as he said negative energies is drawn to our hair And it can even make your hair fall out It made sense to me And since then I do I heard all Abrahamic religions advice as ladies to cover out our head As one other main reason too our Master said was it our crown chakra area too.

That's rude of those men, to try to get with a woman when she is grieving. I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you so much for sharing this, and my heartfelt condolences. Also, I'm so sorry it took me so long to reply, I wasn't getting my comment notifications. Your story is beautiful, and it's true many faiths believe in the power of the hair and of covering. I did not grow up in a religious house, but my family is Christian/catholic and I've found that many Christians don't realize that even the bible advocates covering the hair. All my best to you and your son, may the world see your true beauty without the distraction of conventional thoughts on hair and beauty!

Like you I am a widow. My husband and I were married 10 years. Within days of his passing I began to hear about remarrying. As if dealing with the grief wasn’t enough. That is when I began to consider veiling. For me it became a’hands off’ sign to be left alone. I feel protected by the veil, and it feels like the perfect sign that I am not available, not interested and not to be approached. Like the Master said, it does protect us from negativity, hair can be like an antenna picking up on all the energy around us. I will keep you in my thoughts as one widow to another.

Though the profile photo is outdated, the choice to abstain from removing hair has benefitted life in many ways. How humans whom admittedly lack understanding of the bodily systems find it acceptable to sheer formations of biological growth simply because it does not hurt makes little sense. Both sexes are better off in this humble opinion to leave nature natural. Modesty withstanding of course

Thank you for sharing ! I can understand about people and long hair....try being a redhead ... Strangers would come up an try to touch my hair without even asking!!! And the men , ovey... rude, crude and socially unacceptable questions and attitudes.... I feel that people thought they had a "right" to my hair... wrong... its on MY head... I covered for a bit back about 4 years ago.. then stopped.. now I'm thinking about taking it back up .. I like the idea about this is something I can share with only my husband,who by the way is on board.. :) I like the way it looks... and I like the way I feel when I do cover... In the past it was some what part of my spiritual path... there is power in the hair... There's a FB page just for women pagan and other who cover for many reasons.. its been a great to know that I'm not they only one.. Especially when there is a back lash about head/body covering in the Pagan community ..... Again thank you for answering the head covering question!

River "...Strangers would come up and try to touch my hair without even asking!!! And then men ... " Ouh, i see. Always those offensiv cis-mens. I have a kind of the same problem, but this time almost every girl in school comes up to me, touches my hair and saying things like "give me a child with hairs like yours bla bla" and so on, so i end up with three diffrent pairs of hands in my hairs every day. Its not like i would cry about this, and i also can imagne mens being just unrespectable about womens hair (or in general). My point is just that you womens (often) are also don't really care about if it's my body or not. For example if my Septum doesn't sit perfectly enough (and also just) women grabbing me in my face, without saying something really freaks me out also becaus its a quite "intim" place. Also the same goes for touching upper body and arms(of course just if you according to the todays beauty standarts) witch is really a kind of "degrading" because its just so superficially. I hope you get my point well (I hope it sounds halfway perspicuous). Also how is your plan with Covered hairs going 4 month later ? :)

I can understand this. I was blessed with beautiful, thick red hair. When I was young, I wore it down to my knees. I had schoolmates' hands in my hair all the time. People would ask me if my mother died it, which was a ludicrous notion back in the 70s. On my first day of junior high school, someone tried to set it on fire with a lighter. I promptly cut it all off and felt so free. My migraines went away and my head felt so light. I then got into changing the style all the time because my hair grows out so rapidly that it was easy and fun to experiment. Unfortunately, this led to a bit too much attention from my male coworkers. They didn't hit on me (most of the time), but they would compliment styles they liked in meetings and at other inappropriate times. It is amazing how much power resides in a woman's hair. I tried the scarf thing before, trying to look a little funky but it just didn't work for me. I love how it looks on some women, though, particularly women of color.

I adore covered hair. I really feel like it's a treasure and respect women who cover it. I would love to cover but I live with constant headaches and having anything on my head hurts so bad. How do you deal with that? Does it bother you at all?
@witchhazelscauldron
@witchhazelscauldron 6 лет назад
It took me a while to get the setup right. I'm actually very sensitive to pressure, so in the beginning I did set off a few headaches with the scarves, mainly because I was tightening them too much. I did that because I was afraid of the scarves slipping off, so for a while I wore a velvet headband underneath. I gained enough confidence that way I no longer do the headband and am not really nervous about loosing my scarf. The other thing I messed up on initially was not tucking ends properly and winding up with pressure points. I have to make sure I'm distributing the ends evenly when I poke them under with my thumbs, try to smooth things out, and remember to use the little pocket that the scarf creates when I tie it. Hope that makes sense. The only thing I haven't been able to totally get rid of is pressure to my ears, no matter how loose the scarf, my ears will start to hurt where it runs over them. It doesn't cause headaches, so I deal by just periodically adjusting the scarf, since I don't like the look of putting the scarf behind my ears.

Men like long hair because that's what the world tells them to like. Or, they did. For a while they liked shorter hair apparently, and now longer hair, like waist length is apparently not as attractive to them as shoulder length or medium. It goes back and forth. They're fickle. Women too, men with long hair used to be the shit and now it's shorter. Men with long hair are so beautiful. Mm.
