I worshipped everything Tesla and Elon Musk for years, and that only accelerated when the Tesla Cybertruck was revealed. I had my Cybertruck Tri-motor order in within minutes of the Tesla web page launching.
But there's a Ford F-150 Lightning XLT in my driveway, and I likely won't be going back. In fact, I still have reservations for a Lightning Pro and a Chevy Silverado EV pending. What happened, and why has this Tesla die-hard fan changed his stripes? As exposed by Jerry Rig Everything, Out of Spec Reviews, and Throttle House, there are some compelling reasons. Click here to find out!

Yes, this is a somewhat contentious issue when personal views impact our buying choices, and it matters that all truck buyers have more options. Cybertruck is providing that, and change is good. I went in another direction - for now. I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on EV trucks in general, along with any hopes you have for innovation moving forward. I always love diverse comments and views!

I can't say I've ever based the decision to purchase or not purchase a car on the CEO of the company. A strange time we are in, where so many people feel the need to divide everything into tribal camps. It's exhausting. I'm opting to ignore those who engage in it, and I feel happier for it. You may say ignorance is bliss, fair enough. But bliss is a good alternative to the perpetual cycle of outrage that the internet seems to run on these days. When it comes to the online culture wars, like the classic War Games line goes - "the only winning move is not to play."

I actually agree with you. I did a video on this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d-NHV7MmSKQ.html. Still, we often support a company and person through our purchases. Ford hasn't exactly been an angel company either, and Henry Ford was not exactly an exemplary historical figure, but in this case, I made a choice that worked for me, and I hope all folk will do what feels right for them, regardless of the product. So let me just say that once the bugs are worked out and the issues that are already popping up are dealt with, and after the first adopters make Tesla oodles of profit and the prices and availability finally come down, I'll take a second look, whether Elon Musk is CEO or not. I really appreciate your comment. Good food for thought.

Well said, as well as entertaining, Simon. No assumptions were made here about who is in the driver's seat over there, but you obviously made the right choice, as I am having a lot of trouble picturing Goody in an almost flattened tin can or perhaps, more aptly a batmobile gone wrong. Mother Earth has aesthetic standards, too😉. She does not want that thing in her backyard. Not to mention, c'mon, focus groups... Cybertruck is a good name for a newly released Hotwheels toy, not an actual vehicle. Lightening strikes out the Cybertruck hands down. I'm passing this on to a friend who is considering a similar purchase. Thank You

Good day I live in Quebec and I have bought in september 2023 a Ford Lightning XLT with the standard battery (386KM). I agree 100% in what you said in your video. The lightning truck is amazing and does what it suppose to do. The cons is the range that drop in winter time like all the other EV. Also if you wish to tow something you are loosing 50% of the range. In my case I don t tow and only using it near my home in town. I also charge my truck at my home. I agree in what you said on the CT as it cost much more than the lighning and the range are not that better. If you wish to have a better range you need to buy a range extender that cost 16000 more and this thing take half the space of the bed of the truck. Like you, I have made a reservation to get the silverado EV and will see how good it will be. We will see in time if the CT get better but right now I am starting to hear complaints about the price that is high and the range extender sitting in the bed of the truck t cost a fortune and take half the space. Also if will hard to repair a CT made of stainless steel. If you have an accident only TESLA can repair it. Stainless is a nasty metal as it is hard to repair and you can't paint it. Good video keep up

Thank you so much for your feedback! I'm glad you're enjoying your Ford Lightning XLT and that it's living up to your expectations. It's definitely important to consider the range drop in winter and the impact of towing, but it sounds like you've found a great fit for your needs with the Lightning. I'm excited to hear your thoughts on the Silverado EV when you get it!

The cybertruck that was delivered is not the truck that was promised. Tesla unveiled a 3/4 ton class truck (3500 pounds of payload and up to 14K tow rating) with 500 miles of range and actually delivered a Honda Ridgeline sized truck with 150 miles of everyday usable range (20% to 80% on the battery) while using the ac or heater along with all of the other capabilities reduced. Also factor in the terrible visibility, almost no frunk space, no spare tire unless you put it in the bed, a virtually unusable rear trunk because it will be under all of the other crap that is normally in the back of a truck and this thing is a looking more and more like a dud. Then you have the stainless body that shows every bug/fingerprint/bird turd that you can't even paint because they are all wavy (I guess you could camo it out in flat colors that would not show the waves) and you end up with a vehicle that is going to be worse to cosmetically maintain than a set of Bugatti piano wire wheels. This is why I am also going to go with a Lightning and cancel my CT order.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
Absolutely fantastic comment! Thank you for joining in the conversation, and I can say with certainty that I don't regret my Lightning move for a second. Yes, yes, and yes. This is what so many are glazing over, and something I've focused on in previous CT videos (here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YbW-Yvaz7FA.html, here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zZTKWHNaIyA.html, and here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-keOcFZaqheY.html ), but not as succinctly and eloquently as you just did in a single paragraph. I am of the mind that Ford is working insanely behind the scenes to beat everyone to the punch on the range and capability challenge, now that CT failed to deliver. As Throttle House accurately stated in their video, CT was supposed to propel everything forward, to force change. Instead, they've given every legacy auto co.s a free pass. However, although Ford has really scaled back EV production, I think CEO Jim Farley sees the writing on the wall. The T3 project I think will be far more revolutionary when it occurs than the CT. Fingers crossed!

I love my Lightning and the only thing that makes me think of jumping ship is the Ramcharger- but that concept has to prove itself and by then Ford will have an all new EV pickup out that will have worked out the inherent disadvantages of the Lightning being built on an ICE F-150 platform.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
I also think that with the announcement today from CEO Jim Farley that Tesla's adapters are coming soon (and complimentary!) will do away with some charging challenges, but yeah, the range for some applications makes the RAM potentially a bonus for some. Alternatively, I'm hoping Ford comes out with an aftermarket 'tidy tank' range extender for our current trucks. Wouldn't that be cool? Thanks for your awesome comments, as always Derrick!

To summarize, Elon expressed an opinion that bothered you, now you don't like his companies. You decided to get a Ford because one was available(ish) and Cybertruck wasn't (still isn't). You think your choice is better because you watched RU-vid videos, not because you actually drove a Cybertruck. I think your video editing is pretty good and your channel could grow pretty well if you keep it up.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
Well, now that you put it THAT way... :-). This is a great comment, and you can certainly take that perspective from my video, for sure. Actually, I do still love most of what his companies do. And yes, I didn't drive a Cybertruck, but neither has anyone else, even those who bought one, since there was no pre-purchase test drive. That leaves all of us to rely on those who already own them, as well as good reviewers that have proven very reliable over the years (Throttle House, Jerry Rig Everything, Out Of Spec Reviews, etc), which is the next best thing being since no other option currently exists. I doubt you think it's a good idea to buy a vehicle blind, without ever driving it, without the company disclosing what you'll get before they take your money. That's what current CT buyers are required to do, and now the bugs are in their driveways. With that said, when the bugs and issues are exposed and worked out, just like with the 2018 Model 3 Sandy Munro exposed on RU-vid and saved thousands a lot of grief, Tesla will listen and fix all of them because they are a disrupting innovator - and then I'll take a second look after the hype - and price - comes plummeting down, which it will, like all Teslas.

I don't care if you're the smartest person in the room. If You don't treat everyone else with respect then I don't care. No one is going to take you seriously if you do not work with other people well. And we don't care if you feel that you're more important because you have a gracious parent who gives you tons of money to try all these business moves out on. Anyone with a brand new we were already doing electric. And the only reason why Elon is doing good at all is because he's screwing over the people that work for him. So for those of us who actually understand what's going on we're happy to see people stand up for their views against Elon. Whether he makes a good car or not. If you make a good product doesn't make you good to your employees and if you're not good to your employees then we don't want you doing business at all in the United States. We would rather you go somewhere else and see how well you do elsewhere. Here in America we want you to treat your employees with respect. Because we all have families. We all do work. And just because Mommy and daddy gave you money to be able to try businesses out doesn't make you better than anyone else. I'd rather serve a garbage man than Elon musk.

Actually, I'm not sure on that one. This is a channel about EV trucks, and I think that, once the bugs are worked out and prices plummet after early adopters have helped get us there (see my Trucked Up Rant from November here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xEqo532tRZM.html ), I will likely still get one. I will put the Lightning through its paces for the next several months, and have some fun ideas for the channel coming up that will do that a lot of that, then my next on the list is my reservation for the Silverado EV and if an when the RAM REV 1500 comes out. I expect about that time, the CT will be heading for my driveway. I can't buy one for at least a year because Tesla is fining anyone who sells one! :-) Thank you so much for your comment and joining in the discussion!

I totally agree, and the range numbers look fantastic. My concern is they are not doing it with better efficiency or battery density, but by just adding more batteries, which means a higher cost (and price for us consumers) and huge curb weight. I think it's coming in at almost 2,000lbs more than the Lightning Standard Range! With that said, I love a LOT of things about it, especially the mid-gate, something Tesla failed to deliver with the CT. The Ultium is pouch and stack based, I believe, so I want to see more feedback from Hummer, Lyric and Blazer owners first, I think. We also need the consumer version out ASAP, so we can start seeing these on the roads, and getting our hands on the consumer version! I have it on my radar for the future (and a pre-order here in Canada) .... Thanks for your comment and thoughts!

Pretty much sums up my Cybertruck journey except I held out for the release event, then cancelled. I'm still waiting for the "perfect" truck for me and the infrastructure support. Based on Chevy's history I don't trust them one bit, not impressed with Tesla, local infrastructure is a bit daunting for Ford, plus the pricing & availability of the models, I'm about as far as you can get from Rivian support in the USA though they're probably the most tempting for me currently, Dodge has me intrigued with the Power Wagon idea so I tossed in a reservation (hybrid really makes the most sense for my needs), and I have a reservation for a classic conversion kit from Edison Motors. Wow this one has mixed reviews (lol)! You spat on their meme lord and doge savior 😶‍🌫

@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
Glad to know I'm not alone! Thank you for the great feedback and joining in the discussion. I'm not a fan of Chevy either, but my wife has a Bolt and it has been amazingly efficient and reliable for what it is. Ford announced that I'll be getting a free NACS charging adapter in a couple of months, and then I have access to all of Tesla's Superchargers as well, but I don't do a huge amount of long road trips, although the channel has me planning more. If you're doing a pile of long-distance driving and time is important, then a hybrid might be the way to go and not have to worry about DC fast charging. However, if you're like me and average under 200 km (125 miles) daily, then I would never go back to gas.
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 5 месяцев назад
There are still a few things that I'm looking for that the Cybertruck will have: a) additional access to v2 Superchargers, b) dent resistant panel (don't care where park), c) Tesla website today: "Armor Glass can resist the impact of a baseball at 70 mph or class 4 hail.", d) proven solid OTA ability to change most aspect of vehicle since built with that in mind (Ford, etc have 3rd party supplier integration of electronic which is brutal -- Rivian's OTAs are impressive too). As for Elon, I'm disappointed in his antics and seemingly change the past couple years BUT there are 1000s of Tesla employees that are doing impressive work in many areas (superchargers, megacharger storage, etc). I was really impressed after the '2023 Investor Day' Streamed live on Mar 1, 2023. Tesla is bigger than Elon and I consider the 1000s of others there. P.S. I'm very much looking forward to seeing that the BlueOval TN/KY T3 is like.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for the awesome feedback, Scott! CEO Jim Farley today commented on X that complimentary Tesla adapters are coming asap, which means full access to v2 Superchargers within the next month. As far as CT's exterior, my worry with the unfinished surface is the long list of warranty breakers in the Tesla disclaimers on the CT, which includes bird poop, leaves, and road salt having to be removed immediately from its surface to avoid damage/permanent discoloration. That's a bit of a shocker for the 'low maintenance' idea I bought into. You are so correct on the OTA. But it turns out that many of the issues were not actually related to the software but a 12-volt module that kept stopping updates, giving a false low battery indication. Ford did a voluntary recall and I've had zero problems since. However, it's not anywhere near Tesla at this point, for the very reasons you mentioned. They have to bring it all in-house. I also totally agree that Tesla is more than Elon, which is why I gave the CT a second look. In the end, it's not going to be available for a lot of folk for quite a while, especially here in Canada. I am so excited aboutall the new EV trucks making their way to market this year, and so interested in the T3 program!
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 5 месяцев назад
@@truckedupevs You are welcome. a) I think there is some confusion. Ford, GM, etc will have access to V3, V4, etc Superchargers. As has been reported they do NOT have access to V2 (or V1) Superchargers. There are a LOT of those still and I have a GIF that shows those. b) Can you provide me that recall number as I know folks that are still having problems. c) I think Rivian and Tesla can do more thorough and complete OTAs on almost all hardware because their electronic communications (APIs) with the hardware vs Ford/GM/etc who are getting the parts from 100s of suppliers. Jim Farley has mentioned this in various interviews as well.

I get it, 100%. The Lightning works for my work application and I can tow only about 160 km (100 miles) on a charge, but I don't exceed that in what I do. The Hemi Ram is a power house. Great truck, and excellent track record for reliability. For me, it came down to cost and maintenance for my company, and I'm currently paying the bulk of the truck payment with what I spent on gas and maintenance on the Ranger. Yeah, if you're in the back country a lot, EV trucks can suck. I live in the Kootenays (all mountains and mostly off grid). If I had to rely on chargers, I'd be toast. Up until now, that was totally the case. Luckily, the crackdown by Ford seems to have had some + results, at least in Canada. I bought mine at MSRP, minus $9K in EV incentives, so got it for about $1,400 less than a gas XLT. Also, apparently because of all those Lariats and Platinums Ford shipped when everyone wanted XLTs and Pros, dealerships are stuck with a bunch and actually discounting them, so might be able to snag a deal. Thanks for your comment and checking out the video!

I believe a lot of people who purchased this cybertruck are going to have buyer's remorse they didn't even look at what the truck can do all they did is look excitement of this vehicle without it even being tested against other trucks and when does Cyber truck didn't do very good they didn't know what to tell you they made all kind of excuses like well it's got the wrong tires Tesla Fanboys don't like when another vehicle does better than the cyber truck to me to cyber truck is nothing what a Fed not a real competitor😅

Ha! Yeah, I guess it could be interpreted that way, other than the fact that my place in line turned out to be meaningless. As I said in the video, Tesla won't be shipping to Canada until mid-2025 at the earliest, so my 'screw up' turned out to be a really good one in the end. Loving the Lightning, and hearing some pretty questionable stuff on the CT (Throttle House, Jerry Rig Everything, Out of Spec Reviews, etc). I guess I need to screw up more often. :-) Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Just buy a new ICE truck. When you decide to sell/move it on, it will still have a decent value. EV truck??? I don’t think so:)))
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
I've done that before, and I'm glad I switched. No vehicle is a good investment. They all lose money the moment we drive them off the lot. If someone is buying a vehicle - any vehicle - as an investment - or to retain value, it's a bad choice from every angle. My co. sent $10k in maintenance, gas and repairs on the last ICE truck and I dumped it when the tranny went for a fraction of that. I'm saving about $800 per month on business costs to run my Lightning. Added up over time, that's a real savings that doesn't carry speculation. Thank you for your comment, and I always appreciate the great feedback!

Actually, someone can, along with tens of thousands of other reservation holders. Tesla is banking on those pre-orders, and raised hundreds of millions of dollar $100 at a time for the past 4 years. I wonder how many they have now? I can't wait to see that '2-million pre-order list' after Sandy Munro does a tear-down on one of these things, and the negative reviews by some of the top trusted car guys begin to sink in. Thank you for your comment, and for checking out the video. I do appreciate it!

Nice! Thanks for the chuckle. So far, the Lightning is winning out in many reviews vs. the CT, including Throttle House's CT review today, so I can only presume you're referring to the clunky, leaky, buggy, barely complete Cybertruck :-).

I prefer the Lightning over the Cybertruck, but not because Musk hurt my fragile feelings. Also not offended by free speech..

I appreciate that. I think Musk should say whatever he likes, and he and everyone else should have the right to do so, as long as those acts don't infringe on the same rights of someone else. Sighting my ego is okay, but he didn't offend me personally. I chose simply to exercise my democratic rights and buy from another company - the power of both freedom and capitalism in action! Hey, thank you for your comment! Well, based on the not-so-great CT reviews, including Throttle House, which is known for giving unbiased and comprehensive insight, I'm feeling better by the day with my decision. I don't think one is better or worse, but I would give some time for all the problems to be solved. The first Model 3s were a train wreck, as pointed out clearly by Sandy Munro, and Tesla got it and responded. I think CT will become one of the best Tesla's yet, but it's not there it. Not even close.

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm not angry, and sorry that you interpreted it that way. As Elon would say, I'm exercising my democratic freedom of speech and capitalist rights, and although I think Tesla will totally flourish and grow, I think the CT is overpriced and under-delivering, but that's my view, and RU-vid is a great vehicle for one expressing theirs. I take this comment seriously and will think about better ways to deliver my message in every video. We can all learn to communicate an idea and view without resorting to being petty and 'grudge venting'. I hope all CT owners love their trucks, and get years of satisfaction out of them. I'll likely revisit the CT in a couple of years when they're much cheaper and easier to buy. For now, I'm going to totally celebrate my Lightning!

@@truckedupevs I’ve seen a lot of disappointment over the launch of the CT expressed across the internet. I’ve even expressed some of my own wrt the tri-motor range. However, none of us are entitled to whatever the specs were on an imaginary truck in 2019. Some stuff has been taken away, some has been added. We’re lucky to have multiple players in the game today and more on the way. I’ve been taking a hard look at the Lightning and the R1T since the delivery event last November. But, I’ve no grudge against the Tesla brand for delivering what they’ve delivered.

Dude the availability part of ur argument has no merit for YOU. U screwed up twice. U gave up ur order. The “I don’t care for musks personality “ is bs. Who cares? You sound like the typical voter basing their decision on the superficial. Focus on the truck specs. Would love to hear ur experiences over time tho. CT is not focused on “work truck” users. Plenty of zoomers out there with money that want the status and use it for camping, kayaking etc… no different then the bored yoga wine moms using a pickup to get groceries. Please continue to share ur experiences with ur application. Thx
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
Haha! I totally enjoyed your comment. Thank you! No, I'm aware of the 'screw up' side of things, but really, I'm not whining 🙂. I am glad I cancelled the first time out, and only renewed as a potential back-up plan, with so many EV trucks not at market yet or with prices cranking up at the time. In the end, it all worked out perfectly, and I would have been waiting for a CT for years to come even if I had kept my initial pre-order. As I pointed out in the video, In Canada it doesn't seem to matter what queue point you were in, because Tesla isn't shipping here until mid 2025 at the earliest. You are totally right about the focus. I talked about that in my other CT videos. Regardless of its actual specs, Tesla will sell an insane number of these things. However, for those who put a lot of weight on those original specs that most certainly targeted the traditional truck/work truck in 2019, the current configuration was a disappointment. I doubt Tesla will care at all, but it does take pressure off the other Auto OEMs to step up, and allows them to drag their feet a little with adoption. Tesla is one smart organization, and I wouldn't be surprised if they don't blow everyone away with a 'heavy duty' version of the CT to dominate the mid-sized pick-up market at some point, once the density challenges are overcome on the 4680 batteries. Keep in touch, and comment often! I really appreciate the feedback!

@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
My channel is new, something I'm excited about developing. This is however, a false equivalency. One has nothing to do with the other. I strongly support what Tesla has done regarding the advancement of a sustainable future. I have been a tsla shareholder for years, and still own Cdn$ deposit receipts with a small holding, and have done well thanks to the company. I would have posted the very comment you did above up until about two years ago. Times have changed. We need companies like Tesla, so at no point am I knocking the company. We all make personal choices when buying a product. The CT failed to deliver on almost every original truck metric claimed in 2019. No owner can test drive one. No details are disclosed until AFTER one buys it, and the insane hype has allowed Tesla to crank the price far beyond inflationary averages. I will likely own one of these in the future, but I'll buy mine at $30k below the current Foundation price for my Tri-motor, and after all the bugs and issues have been addressed. I'm still a bit of a Tesla fanboy, just not a Musk one. Too much power and influence for one man, and one increasingly unstable and angry individual. Thank you for your comment. It is important to hear others' diverse perspectives on my channel.
