Do you feel influenced or even pressured to get a designer piece? I don't think it should become normal for everyone to own a designer item. In this video, I will share why I don't want to have luxury brands in my life - we'll talk about subjective reasons, ethics & sustainability of luxury brands, quality, and gratefulness. Maybe it will give you food for thought or it will make you feel less alone in not wanting designer things.
I do understand that values and especially taste/style is very subjective and if you're out there and love a certain designer piece and can afford it - then go for it! 🥰

Have you ever purchased a designer item? And if yes, any regrets or do you still absolutely love it? Let me know what you think about luxury brands. And remember, this is a very subjective topic 😊

I got a gift card to a children's boutique that sells designer brand items. I chose to use it to invest in warm coats for the kids (in a size bigger than they needed!) The quality was great and it was a good investment. I'm still using it many years and a couple children later and it's just starting to show slight wear and tear. I got some clothing there when they were on clearance as well and they were TERRIBLE quality. I didn't see it last any longer than Walmart clothes. I didn't regret it, but I would've had I gotten it full price!

Telling people to shop local artisans is a great alternative. Made more ethically and more unique!

I had a custom leather bag made made by a local woman in Alaska. I'm with you on wanting something high quality and lovely vs. on trend.

I think I have an unusual take on this. I have zero interest in designer brands or luxury cars etc. If i woke up tomorrow and 20 designer bags appeared in my wardrobe and a luxury car on my drive I would get rid of them. I would be embarrassed to walk round with a label on me like I’m a walking billboard and I’ve never understood the need to project a certain status. Status is something that doesn’t interest me. Years ago someone I was dating bought me a Louis Vuitton bag and I told them I would rather they return it because it wasn’t my style. I didn’t like it, I knew I’d be uncomfortable wearing it and I saw it as a huge waste of money. I’m not sure exactly why being seen in logos or with luxury items makes me so uncomfortable but I think it has something to do with using something that doesn’t align fully with my values and priorities, which leads to a sense of cognitive dissonance. I’m not judging people who want these items btw as we all have our vices and I’m sure I have made plenty of purchases that others wouldn’t understand!

Thank you so much for sharing! I feel understood - Guess, we're not the only ones. And I love your statement at the end: no judgement to people who see it differently and there are most certainly purchases that we've made that they won't understand. 💯

I haven't purchased a "designer" brand of anything, and I never will. I look for high quality pieces from brands that source ethically, made from natural fibers, and only if I need something. I try thrifting first always. Trying for several years now to be more intentional in my purchases and not adding to the horrendous amount of overconsumption we see in the world today. I feel like we are killing our planet with our desire to own every new product that ever comes out, and we don't care if the Earth becomes one giant landfill.

Totally agree with you; most of the mainstream designer items are overpriced and ugly. I would rather clothes from midrange brands with higher quality

Love this video! I have a handful of designer items that I love but I have bought all of them on the second hand market. I think that’s why I don’t regret them. I will never pay full price or directly buy from designers because I am learning how to make my own quality pieces and I want to support ethical working conditions, so supporting unethical practices of luxury brands is not an option

Thanks for sharing! You're right, second hand is a great option for someone who wants to get designer items but not spend as much money or not directly give to the designer brands..

There are companies with good quality products that are not 10 times the price. I remember seeing a coworker with a scarf that looked just like one I bought from Walmart. I complimented her on the scarf and she told me it was Burberry. I really couldn’t tell it was “luxurious”.

Well, I have to admit, that I baught to much designer stuff. To my defense, I was actually raced the way that you have to define yourself with designer pieces otherwise you are not worth as a human. Therefore, I can agree, that most of the stuff is not worth the priece. Dior dresses have been synthetic material with a bad fit, once an expensive belt from Chanel was made out of cheap craft beads. I knew that as I saw the beads the day before in a craft store! Even the beloved LV travel bags are sh*t- the plastic broke after 2 years! Well while the leather is still fine, the plastik supported the framework of the suitcase; now its gone and this make the suitcase wheels unstable. Moreover, the suitcase is very heavy. I really wouldnt revcomment buying it- I really regret it. When it comes to shoes, I have to say, that they are good quality. Some of them, I really worn to death. Some handbags, I also worn to death, however they had no logo, mostly ppl didnt know that they are luxery bags. I didnt really regret buying those, but again, I used the items- I threw it in the corner, I used the bag as a pillow, I kicked against it, the dog played with it etc and was still working. I cannot understand to purchase such a bag as "investement". Never I would do that as it is not worth it. Maybe once apon the time it was possible to resell this stuff, but today .... Today my wardrobe has tones of second hand cloths or handmade stuff from medieval festivals (leather stuff eg), lol. I wouldnt buy such items anymore just because they are from a brand. Hoewever, I would still buy something, I really would use and like. There is really no nead to fell pressured to own such things. I am a bit angry, that I was thaught that way.

Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️It's so helpful to get different perspectives on this. It's also valuable to hear from your experience of what is "bad quality" and not worth it and what was worth it in your opinion. Isn't it funny how society, culture and family values influence us so much - even in our adulthood. But thankfully we can make our own choices now 😊

Thank you for this. It was very informative. As I have gotten older, I have been frugal when it comes to clothing and accessories. And we have a little one to dress too. My mom bought me a bottle of coco perfume for my birthday. It was very nice of her to do so. I wish she would have not spent so much money. Again, thank you!
