Greetings from Australia. Inverloch windsurfing club has an annual “ longboard challenge” where the objective is to just “ get to the agreed destination”. Combine shifting wind, tides, sand bars, flower bombs, and you have a recipe for endless campfire stories at the destination or back at the club house. Short boards die like Pop ,usic. Longboards Live forever like classical music.

Absolutely! Please do! The time a Mistral One Design-board was the only board left on the beach in the surfclub on a high wind day, forced me to pick it up and join the rest of the bunch at sea. I couldn't believe how majestical it felt when the thing went planing at full speed! Eyes fell out of their sockets when a 15 year old lightweight on a raceboard overtook the speedfreaks on their short speed/slalom boards! I'll never forget that! Jibing the oiltanker was a very different but also fulfilling experience. Harking back to the past once in a while can produce some interesting stuff. Why not try and push a '90's Bic Melody over its limits and see what happens :-) ...or something like that. Comparing older boards and sails with the new stuff is quite interesting and shows the sometimes unnoticed progress that has been made on many planes; Good video!

I came back from Vasiliki two days ago. I caught the bus from there to Preveza Airport. The coastal towns and ports were very beautiful and the hilly scenery was breathtaking. This is a lovely part of the world for windsurfing, sailing and just in general to explore. I only had 6 days there, but I want to go back to see more. Right now, it seems like a dream. Watching your video has reminded me of my time there. I like this idea of using windsurfing as a way to go from one location to another! There appears to be lots of tiny coves to take a rest in as well along this coastline. Great!

Would definitely like more content like this. It might not be very action-packed, but if you can take a drone, you still get some beautiful footage.

Thanks for the video Nils. Great to see you windsurfing with your father too. I totally agree that windsurfing has has so much more to offer than what you typically see today on the water. I have all of the current slalom, wave, as well as foil set ups that I love, but also have old glass boards from the 80’s that I pull out a few times per year. So different from todays gear but also really fun. I even still have my first board I bought in 1985-a Fanatic Viper that needs some repair. You have inspired me to repair it and take it out again! Keep up the great videos Nils. Bis nächste mal!

Well done guys. I envy you. I windsurf a lot but my father has died many years ago and I am 72 years old now with a broken leg. The video is excellent for my tastes and I wish you to keep on travelling as father and son. All the best.❤

Nils, this is great, I love raceboarding, I have sailed slalom for years, but raceboard offer such adventure. With the possibility to explore, it really is a new dimension for windsurfing. I loved your videos on the longboard around Greece.

Loved your video and it was nice that your father joined you. I've done numerous long distance sailboard cursing down here in Florida, USA on my Mistral Superlight back in the mid 80's to the late 1990's, the longest was about 20 miles (37km). I also owned a Hookipa for the high wind and wave days. I'm now 71 years old and I miss those days.

Hi from Canada , i enjoy my F2 World Cup Race ( circa 1986 ish board ?) in the same manner. Long easy cruises are guaranteed unless its almost dead calm. Even upwind on the rail in the beating straps with a 9.5 in lighter wind you create so much apparent wind , you can feel the power.. soooo fun. The skill needed to gybe it fully planning in heavy airs is a feat harder than a shortboard( lol that term ages me) but if successful, it is an accomplishment any windsurfer can take pride in.

Gerne mehr Windsurf-Ausflüge. :) Der Expeditionsaspekt wird in der Windsurf-Branche etwas vernachlässigt, denke ich.

I still have a F2 Lightning 380 and sail it 3-4 times a year and I love it. Most other times I windsurf on Windsurfer LT or do Wingfoiling.

Nice boards... The mistral course boards were nice and light with a good shape and a challenge to keep the gasket in good condition. The Dacron ones held up the best they were not as clean as the neoprene type on your board. The gluing surface needed to be repaired often in order to except glue without a rippled gasket.

Hello. For sure, old school and raceboarding is pure windsurf, the essence of this! I have the FANATIC ULTRA CAT. Exactly the same spirit as you to discover other places, other feeling, other people,...Now, raceboard can offer all the plan of windsurfing in ANY CONDITIONS (meteo, personnel feeling of the day,...). It's cost not necessary as much money as slalom, freeride,...material. In conclusion, for sure, continue to propose us such this videos!!!! Many thnaks Nils. Fabian, Belgium.

I have a rather battered Phantom that I use in light winds on the reservoir where I do most of my shortboard windsurfing, and a Mistral Equipe which I use on the River Thames. Raceboards are seriously underrated and underused.

Awesome video Nils! I tried such "XC-windsurfing" in Croatia with my old F2 comet slalom board. The only problem nowadays is to get hold of a fin big enough for USbox/USbase, at the moment I have a freewave 34 from MFC , not too bad but I wouldn't mind if it had a bigger format, around 40 slalom fin could work nicely in the water.

Love it. At my small board spot, the wing foilers are taking over. When windsurfing was a really big sport, the long boards ruled. People where sailing everywhere - even places that now are considered unsailable. Maybe rediscovering the sailing aspect of windsurfing is what is needed to get more people windsurfing? Love that with a 9.5 you can go from 2 knots to 30 - very simple, and you can actually agree with others to go windsurfing every tuesday or thursday...because the wind will almost always be sailable. The speed is also quite high, as I have done 30 knots on a rb in the past...but pure performance is not the reason to choose these. It is mostly about feeling, freedom and simplicity.

Great video. I have a starboard phantom 377 now for 17 months and I've never sailed it !!!! I bought it because it was so beautiful and I love looking at it but I don't know how to sail it . For sure I learnt to sail in the 80s on something similar but went smaller and smaller as you did back then so now the sheer size of it intimidates me alot. Logic says this is the way forward as I'm now 62 . Maybe time for some lightwind summer cruising or fishing for mackerel as we used to do. Thanks for a motivational video. Respect from ireland.

I'm your age and was using an old raceboard on the loughs last summer; great locations. With these you can start in just a breeze, so quite relaxed way to start. Physically in those conditions raising a big sail is the hardest part - I use an easy uphaul that hooks in the harness. Technically ,again in those conditions, the thing that hits you is that the deck is 'crowded', Otherwise not too hard to sail (race is a different matter).

On my vacation at lake garda I always dreamed about making a daytrip with the surfboard all the way to the south. But we just had rental gear, so we had to get back at the same day and the wind can die quickly at lake garda, so we didn't do it.

Very nice video. Reminds me of my childhood Salling in Massachusetts (USA). My uncle & I would sail 6 - 20 miles out & back, cruzing to different places. Was very enjoyable. True feeling of freedom on a windsurfer. I miss those days. I now live inland & only have access to small lakes. Keep up the long board cruzing/exploration videos!

What size fin do you have in the Mistral? My old F2 also has a US box and I don't think it's possible to buy a large enough fin for that format now.
