So, let me get this straight...This young man was failed because he drove safely in a school zone with children walking about but was overtaken by someone else who drove unsafely??? And then failed yet again because he didn't go complete exorcist with his neck changing lanes? Such small things for someone not to get a license over. The real surprise here is that anyone is allowed to have a license at all.

Not saying I don't believe Josh, but when you hear people's reasons for failing a test it's often because "the examiner was harsh/wrong." People underplay their mistakes and you can't really know unless you were there.
@DJGarboot
@DJGarboot 6 лет назад
yeah i've heard a lot of " i've never gone through the area that they took me" or that it was a small mistake at the very end of the test that failed them. and to be fair ive done similar things as well. i blamed a crazy BMW driver for my failure as he sped up when i began to pull out of a junction which wasn't completely true as it would have been ok if i pulled out of the junction with sensible instead of a somewhat leisurely pace which caused him to take action.
@jasonlam8588
@jasonlam8588 5 лет назад
Because the 20 mile zone ended when he left the school area and he kept at 20 when it was 30. Would be a minor for that alone and if people overtake it'd be a serious
@Jwallworth

Yeah I failed my first test (after driving superb that day) because I only looked behind my right shoulder once when I reversed behind a car and instead focused on my mirrors and left shoulder. He said I had incredible control of the car and did a very nice drive. 0 minor faults but that was considered a serious. Despite the fact that there were no pedestrians in this instance. The second time, I clipped a curb, made a balls of my bay park and still managed to pass with 5 driving faults. My first examiner was older and very robotic and quiet. The second was friendly and chatty and judged me for my driving.

It's painful you failed the way you did. I admire your generosity in sharing your experience of the test given the circumstance. Thank you.

There is always a small element of "luck on the day" for any test. This applies to any test at all not just a driving test to be fair. A couple of the main points that I followed while I did my driving test 7 years ago. I passed first time. I found that you must show the examiner that you have confidence behind the wheel. If the examiner feels safe with you behind the wheel then there is no reason why you would fail. I know it is hard to get over nerves though and everyone struggles with this in their own way.
@Jwallworth
@Jwallworth 5 лет назад
Mr.Mister unfortunately some of them do still fail you. My first test, the examiner said I had incredible control of the car, I was very confident and didn’t a good job driving and reversing. But because I didn’t look over my right shoulder more then once when reversing behind a car (kept looking over the left) and be considered that a major. I had no minor faults. The second test I clipped the curb and still passed because that examiner knew I could drive. Not to discriminate but it’s usually the older ones that go exactly by the book.

Sounds like the examiner needs to get some re-training. I passed my test first time last July with only a few minors. There was a moment where I genuinely thought I had failed, where some temporary lights were put up on a mini roundabout because of roadworks. I went when my light turned green, but because of how the roadworks were set up, I couldn't see what was coming from the right or straight ahead, so I took my time (but didn't go too slow). Got passed the traffic lights and a car came speeding though from straight in front, obviously running a red so I slammed on the brakes and had to make an emergency stop. I had it in my head that it was my fault and I was in the wrong. When we got back to the test centre my examiner said congratulations, you've passed, so I queried it... I said "what about the roundabout?", she said "that was brilliantly done considering the circumstances. He was in the wrong and you reacted quickly and correctly." Went home to two very excited children and a very happy wife :)

Yep if this was my examiner, I'd fail every day of driving if being overtaken is tantamount to a serious fault, seeing as I am constantly overtaken for driving on the speed limit.

I failed my test 3 times and passed the 4th. I really could drive it just has me so nervous on the day. I also ended up with the same examiner the first 3 times which really didn't help! But I believe that the more you get the chance to take a test, the better of a driver you are. I am not just saying this due to my situation. I am saying it because you have to practice more and more and perfect your driving so much that it becomes impossible to fail you. Once you've done that it will be screwed into you ready for the road! However, people that pass first time are also good drivers! But some may not be as cautious like the ones that have to keep perfecting to pass.
@GraveEncountersFan
@GraveEncountersFan 6 лет назад
C V I’ve failed twice with same examiner because I always panic on my test. 1st test I stalled and ended up having a panic attack, second test I failed in the last two minutes on the way back to test centre. I’d consider myself a good driver but I know it’s my nerves. Think I’m gunna take stress relief tablets to calm me down for my next test which is this month
@cv9574
@cv9574 6 лет назад
You'll be fine on your next test! Let me know how you get on. After I'd done my test 3 times I stopped panicking because I knew that it could only go two way, pass or fail! And either way you pass or you fail and try again. I'm not biased because I got failed 3 times but I do feel having the same examiner is unfair, and that some examiners are definitely not as nice, or fair, as others.

Confidence is important but it is also vital to have a good understanding of the rules of the road, what you are doing at any given time and what to do next. It is great to be confident but you must be correct in what you are doing.

Mr.Mister thank you, I failed my test on Wednesday and it was purely because of confidence. I stalled a few times at a set of lights in the first 5 minutes, once I knew I’d failed the pressure was off and I went on to only get 3 minors. I feel like it’s the best thing to happen to me because I’m really looking forward to my next test, feeling much more confident.

examiners can be really harsh but to be absolutely fair, it's in their best interest to pass people rather than give them an undue fail so it looks better on them! I've just failed my test too, it was a well deserved fail and I know how nerve wracking the tests are. Good luck next time!

My instructor often tells me off for not looking in my right mirror, when I have, because I don't move my head to look at it I just flick my eyes. My husband, he's been driving for about 15 years, said to always exaggerate your head movements to make sure they can see you checking. Get into the habit of other whilst you're learning! I don't know if the first fail would have been as bad if he'd have explained to the examiner at the time why he was still doing 20.
@emmasaunders8248
@emmasaunders8248 6 лет назад
Seems like you had a bit of a tough examiner! I would have appealed the 20mph, it seems so unfair that other drivers overtaking can cause a serious fault! Good Luck for your next test!
@Cheezsoup
@Cheezsoup 5 лет назад
Affecting other traffic is undesirable, if dangerous or if it causes others to take risks YOU are at fault (at one point in my test [passed first time]I was down to 8mph but as it wasn't affecting anyone else this was an acceptable speed) . In my defence it was a residential street and I felt this was an appropriate speed maybe if I'd glanced at the speedo instead of scanning the pavement I would have noticed just how slow I was and worried that I should speed up a bit, the examiner was the one who said it had been too slow but as it wasn't affecting anyone else..... Think the received wisdom (wasn't really listening to the instructor as he drove me home)on this is it was a minor for 'failure to make progress' rather than a serious for affecting others

Word of advice. Before booking a test, don't go for one with a very low pass rate... i.e, Yardley South only pass 33% go to one with a high pass rate. Don't book it for first thing. Rush hour school kids. Check test routes and practice practice practice. Good luck everyone

I've taken my test quite late in my mid 30's after failing my first test when I was 23. I failed second test in Nov 17 due to poor observations however I felt it is one that could have been challenged by my instructor saying that second time in Jan few days before my birthday I ended up with same examiner so I took my instructor with me. My nerves were better this time and I drove as best as I could. I had normal independent driving section using road signs. Luckily I was taken through areas I practiced..It was during busy period when schools back from holiday! No pressure there lol As soon as we got near test centre examiner started asking personal questions like what I do for living and where I'm going back to work? I did say jokingly I am going back to work after test and it would be good if passed so I could drive to work..I know I can't really drive back until I'm insured. She smiled it was that point I knew I have a good chance as she seemed friendly about TR he questions or realises I'm ready to take on the roads by myself. Before finishing there was two critical test parts emergency braking which got me a minor. While I checked back, left mirror and right side apparently I didn't check my left blind spot properly but she did say it was a quiet road and she still had to give me a minor for my own improvement. Second minor was not maintaining speed when it was all clear. Basically I was doing about 23-25mph in a 30mph road for bit longer. Now the dreaded bit was where many learners often fail when going into test centre car park which is a steep hilly park! Many don't apply enough gas end up stalling or rolling back to the road which is very dangerous! I did same on my mock test but instructor repeated few times until I knew exactly what to do. Basically I had to be on first gear with enough revs until I climbed then slowly edge forward to designated parking with a wall very close the entrance/exit of the car park. Apparently many learners hit the wall as the car park is very small. When examiner asked she did say stop before the wall trying not to hit it! I kept my calm telling myself don't mess up as I've done so well. I stopped safely. Examiner took a minute then asked if it was ok for my instructor to be in or not. I was fine then she says "lovely drive and it is a pass so well done" her feedback was lovely. Both myself and instructor hugged big time. I was so happy. So yeah this chap is right don't over think and think how you'd drive safely with your loved ones if you were driving on your own! Examiners certainly won't fail you intentionally as you pay more money into system when you pass e.g car, fuel, insurance, maintenance, toll or any congestion/emission charges..Get plenty to sleep day before test. On test day have a good breakfast or meal depending when your test is. Think positive like how safely you'd drive or don't think about driving at all, drink water or hot drink that you enjoy not much caffeine, listen to music or read books whatever calms your nerves. Before going to test go to toilet if you need to and you can carry a bottle of water during test if necessary. When instructor stops you you can always ask permission to have a quick sip of water and I did. Allow little fresh air by leaving windows open a little bit. You can also have radio in the background with very low volume which may help. If you make a mistake don't let it bother you..Just think it's done let's focus and drive better. Many of the mistakes are seen as driving fault and will not fail you until you keep repeating them. don't over do the observations where there is no need and you are going on a straight road with no hazard..Watch lots of RU-vid videos with tips and know your road signs and rules. If you are feeling poorly don't risk It rebook the test..Good luck!

Failed today too, 2 serious and 4 minors. I could have avoided one of the serious as I tried to go to 3rd gear from second but instead went to 1st (bad mistake 😭) but all good as I did most of the things well :)

I reccomend taking tests on a saturday morning, the examiners are way more relaxed and they are doing overtime hence they get more £££ so they will be more willing to hand out passes according to my instructor who's been teaching for over 10 years

I failed my first test with 4 minors (3 of which were for steering) so it counts as a major. The second time I got 8 minors and passed despite the fact I drove like a spastic. I got lucky the 2nd time and got a push over examiner and for her, I'm grateful.
@enviousfred
@enviousfred 6 лет назад
It's always gutting to fail a test when you see some of the dopes who pass! You have to do the old "acting routine" as my 2nd instructor called it. This where you leave the Exam.r in no doubt that you are checking mirrors and 'life-saver' check over your right shoulder, even do the shoulder check again just as you're moving off in 1st, you won't get marked down for over-checking (during move off/change lane). It is not really 'acting' though because it will help ingrain good habits and should be done every time.

I failed first time round because a learner took a hard brake behind me through no fault of my own but the examiner said it was a ‘serious fault’. Complete piss take. The other learner was taking a test as well so he failed not only himself but me as well. Passed second time round with no minors.

I failed with 2 minors and 2 serious some time ago. All it took was checking my blind spots when changing lanes and I could’ve passed, it was that simple. :( But some points in this video are valid I agree. From my peripheral, I noticed the amount of times the examiner scribbled on the sheet. I thought I accumulated a lot of faults but it wasn’t actually that much!

i passed my test 1st time, then got my license revoked for 6 points in under 2 years then passed 1st time again. it really is easier than you think, if you take your time and just follow simple guidelines you will pass.

I failed my test many years ago, so long ago I can’t remember how long ago lol Iv passed many different categories since because I eventually controlled nerves a bit better. It’s not always your driving capability that lets you down, I can be your mindset too.

That's tough, ive noticed a lot of drivers when they see learner cars, try to pull out faster or take risks overtaking becasuse they think a lerner is going to slow them down or get in the way of them in return making situations harder and even dangerous for the lerner, the examiner should know this. you should never of got a serious for either one of them. If anything a minor for the second.
@XxGreedyMagiiCxX
@XxGreedyMagiiCxX 6 лет назад
Passed second time, my first time the examiner was so nice and friendly got 1 serious because he said I couldn't see past a lorry with his hazards on (but I could) 0 minors, then the second time the examiner was so rude, getting angry because I wanted her to explain things properly, got 1 minor because she told me to park behind the silver car and said I moved to quick and said she didn't mean that one 😐

I had a similar situation on my first driving test, it was ridiculous. I got 3 minors and got a serious. The serious was for stopping at a red light which then went to flashing amber. There were no pedestrians on the crossing, a car pulled up next to me and also waited until it went to green. The examiner failed me for waiting less then 5 seconds for a light to go from flashing amber to green. What made this worse was that this happenned within the first 5 minutes of the test, for the remainder of the test I received 3 minors and yet I was failed. I really can’t believe why people fail, they just seem to make the rules up as to what constitutes a minor or a serious on the day.

Yes it is - and quite rightly so. Both in terms of fatalities per mile travelled, and fatalities per head of population, Britain's roads consistently rank among the top five safest in the world, in spite of being some of the busiest. There's only one way these standards can be maintained, and that is by insisting on a high level of competence before a licence is given. The UK driving test reflects this principle.

Josh, firstly unlucky with failing your test you do feel down and this that and the other I know because I failed my first test and I literally thought I won’t pass now that was my best chance to pass etc but it turned out it was the best thing that could of happened because I worked on where I went wrong and some other areas and the few months and made myself an all round better driver and I passed second time round! Obviously the advantage I had was I knew what to expect and everything else that came with it, so don’t worry keep working hard and you’ll pass next time!

i failed mine today because of not driving too fast according to the examiner!!! I am confused is it safe to drive carefully or too drive in a crazy way!! it was a 30 mph sign and i was doing about 25! he said that would hold the traffic that may come from the back :/ the other major is going to the carriage way from a slip road with slow speed maybe 45 or 50 so I can have time to check a cap to get into the carriage way, this last fault i think it was my fault because i should be at least 65 mph. good luck for everyone just be confident and don't overthink it and dont forget mirrors mirrors

I passed 2nd time, I got a serious on the first test as I approached the roundabout correctly intending to go first exit, correct lane, signal on, way was clear but as I was turning I was so nervous my hands just locked into place so I just crawled past the exit and took the second exit instead, signal still on, I felt like such an idiot when I realised why I failed. if I didn't let nerves get the best of me I would've passed first time

Very unfair!!! Some examiners unfairly mark learners failed for driving safely ridiculous! I also got 2 minor and 2 serious (one I made because I knew I had already failed basically gave up) I was made uncomfortable all the way through the test by the examiner he did not allow me to use my reference points while doing the bay park manoeuvre and did not explain properly that I am heading towards a 24/7 bus lane on a dual carriageway(which cannot be seen unless turning left even though I asked the examiner if I could use it he remained silent he knew I did not understand him but let me fail anyway my mind was clouded and I was thinking what he meant I didn’t have enough time to think as the light changed green and I couldn’t ask this rude examiner what he meant as he had made me feel too uncomfortable to ask UK practical driving test is all about luck it depends on the examiner and what route they take you on but sometimes it is about the learners nerves and driving standards but unfortunately many examiners don’t make the learners feel comfortable I wouldv passed my test if the examiner did not intervene I did not need his help but trying to help me he only made me fail because he was not clear with his instructions

What angers me more than anything is the fact that me & josh & other learners are all far better drivers then most people on the road & im not being funny but u feel as if you're genuinely being held back out of spite. They also like to milk the last of you're hard earned money out of you as well; i paid £ 110 quid for my test ( £62 for the test & £48 for my Instructor ) I failed because, like Josh, I had a impatient dickhead behind me who wanted to get past whist i parallel parked.
