Good points made, and not just for car drivers, a motorcyclist could lose their life on some of the roads. Something has to be done because we're paying road tax and nothing is being done about it. There should be an 'MOT'esque test for the state of the roads, rather than just the motorist forking out for an MOT test. That's just another thing we have to spend money on. On a positive note, that's a beautiful car 👌

Cheers matey! Totally agree- IF we have to keep our cars fit for the road then the roads should be fit for the vehicles that use them 👍

I drive an M135i, I feel every bump in the road & if I hit a minor pothole it sounds so bad within the cabin. I am now finding I am spending more time looking for potholes instead of other dangers on the road or moving to avoid them. Totally agree it takes the joy out of driving, you are on edge ALL the time looking out for potholes.

As a long time bmw driver it puts the fear into me hitting a pothole! Not because the buckled wheels, worn suspension or even the cracked wheels (I’m sure long time bmw owners know this pain with the cracked wheels) but it’s the possibility of an airbag being deployed that scares me, I’ve seen it happen first hand and I’m sure it happened to clarkson on a top gear episode years ago too. It’s not a rare occurrence unfortunately.

Jeez! Could you imagine that happening at 70mph on the motorway?!? As Jeremy probably would say- there’d be brown stuff coming out 😳😳😳

Agreed, single track country roads being full of potholes at the side is not ideal - but kind of expected. But the fact that all our A roads and motorways are littered with these is appalling. I do worry about damaging my wheels, but more than that I agree that they are a danger to life. Driving up the A50 is a horrible experience, the number of times you have to swerve a pothole is frankly dangerous

You need a monster truck to drive on the UK roads now. They are the worst I've seen over the last 30 years. Wouldn't mind so much if I didn't have to pay road tax or council tax. Not to mention the amount of near head ons I've had from other drivers panicking and vearing out of the way of a sink hole! Shocking.

Not only that but the roads that are being repaired are being done so very poorly. They repaired (basically patched) a road near to me less than a month ago and it's already falling to pieces again.

First of all the money people pay on road tax has nothing to do with the roads . It comes out of council tax which we all pay. Everyone is paying towards the roads yet the council puts nothing towards the roads. Unless its march and they have money left over from the financial year and will spend so next years budget doesn't go down.

Good video RichT, I think as a country we should push this issue together, but where would you start? I work at a insurance approved car bodyshop and I have hundreds of customers a month through the door, all ages and everyone is sick of the state of our roads 😡. East Sussex is probably one of the worst in the country! I drive a f83 m4 comp and I honestly have no enjoyment driving now, I've also put my motorcycle up for sale, as its just to dangerous to ride, specially when I have a family to provide for. How is this fair!!!

Hi there 100% agree that the public should put pressure on councils and the government to get the roads into a condition that makes them fit for purpose. I’ve just driven the same route that I was on this video and guess how many potholes have been filled or repaired- precisely none 😩 In fact this road is now even worse. The HS2 was scrapped so the money could be spent on repairing our crumbling road network but there is absolutely no evidence of this. I actually nearly came off my bike a couple of weeks back due to a huge gap in the tarmac- was VERY scary. I guess we just have to hope there is an army of guys ready to get going but o doubt it. Cheers again 👍

@@RichT53 I'm glad your ok from your motor bike near insodent 👍🏻, it is scary and I know riding motor bikes are dangerous anyway, but when u don't know what your going to be faced with round the next corner I.e the grand canyon, it just takes all the fun out of riding in my eyes! Further more regarding the community standing together to face the local council / government, I don't know about you and probably most of the UK tax payers, I am so busy with constantly working to pay my bills and supporting my family, I just don't have the mental capacity to face anything else week to week, I feel like we are all chasing the pounds to keep our heads above water that anything outside of this box is a massive mountain that we can't climb! I feel like this maybe the big plane of the government, to keep us all on the grind stone so we don't have the mental of physical capacity to stand up for our rights! (sorry for going so deep, but I do feel this is a big part of our issues as a community and country). Fingers crossed for changes to come.

@@richardinnes6752 There is definitely a lot of merit in what you say and I’d say that the vast majority of Middle England such as you and as well as millions of others feel exactly the same way. We keep working to provide for our nearest & dearest whilst getting less and less back from one clueless government to the next. If we look back in time we can see the many many things that we pay taxes for being taken away such as dentists- when was the last time you saw anyone sweeping the streets? We need to be kept in our place! The French public have it right (in some ways) they don’t put up with it and let those in power know. Until we speak on mass it will continue, sadly 😢

Sorry a bit off topic but was interested to get your take after having my M4 competition now for only 2 months and I must admit whist I absolutely love driving the car, I’m not overly impressed with the slight jerkiness of DCT gearbox. I understand how works etc etc and apparently a GTS flash solves the issue but was genuinely interested to get your opinion on how you find it Rich?
@RichT53
@RichT53 4 месяца назад
Hi James, Thanks for watching and for making contact. To be honest, I don't have any issues with the gearbox other than it does take it's time deciding to change from reverse into 1st and vice-versa when manoeuvring and occasionally being a little jerky when slowing down to a stop but only occasionally. When using the paddles is as smooth as butter. Cheers, Rich

I can without a doubt agree with your concerns, this is the main reason why I’m holding back getting one at present! It’s just stressful driving around. Alongside pot holes the markers are missing for speed humps/bumps and if don’t notice them in time you’re too late to react and slow the motor down to prevent damage too.. Whether that’s any carbon fibre, wheel or suspension.. It’s just beyond a joke at the moment. Road tax is one issue, the cost of insurance is rising as well! Think it’s time to pack my bags and get a Lexus in the Middle East..😔
@RichT53

Hi there, Speed bumps! We have them in the village where I live and as you say the markers have disappeared over time so you can't see them. I've actually seen cars smashing their sumps on them because they haven't seen them in time to be able to slow down. 😟

I know how you feel unfortunately. Overall the roads in the UK are in dire state of repair. I drive 100 ish miles a day. A mixture of motorways, A and B roads and there’s probably not a stretch that hasn’t got a pothole or two. I know this is an insensitive and it’s being changed next year but electric cars are a big part of the problem. They are 2 an 3 ton’s plus, with high power and torque delivered to the wheels it’s tearing up the roads imo. I know it’s a long standing issue that’s from before the new dawn of the EV’s but they certainly ain’t helping. So far I’ve been quite lucky and haven’t had any short term damage from hitting a pothole but I can’t with any confidence say that they haven’t had a long term impact. Anyway moan over.

😅 We Brits do like a whinge don't we?! I can't help but look at the amount of road tax we pay and how unfair it is. I was looking (as you do lol) on Autotrader yesterday and a 2005 Porsche 911 is about £700 per year to tax. A car that probably does less than 5,000 miles a year as it is likely to be a 2nd car (if you are lucky enough) yet you have to pay more than a car that does 40,000 plus miles. All wrong and unfair! Obviously in my opinion 🙃
@michaeldawson6309
@michaeldawson6309 4 месяца назад
I must disagree. Do you know the weight of a BMW i3 EV ? 2 Ton? 3Ton? no its less than a Fiesta its 1345Kg ! less. Plus no matter how much torque it has is irrelevant when driving at a constant speed. Do you home work before commenting on things you know little about.
@RDFContent
@RDFContent 4 месяца назад
Sorry this is wrong, nothing to do with EVs. If that's the case please tell me why we have not seen this issue sooner, we have had fully loaded Vans, lorrys etc which all weight much more than EVs. It is simply a LACK of maintenance.
@BigCol78
@BigCol78 4 месяца назад
@@michaeldawson6309 I didn't use one car as an example, I suppose what I should have said was the average weight of on ev is 2000kg with some of the least popular i3's being 1345 to 1365kg and the more hefty Mercedes EQV weighing in at some 2960kg or one of the most popular ev's in the UK a Tesla Model Y weighing between 1909 and 2003kg. As for torque I wasn't referring to a constant speed, I was more referring to pulling away or how the power is delivered. For comparison a one of the more powerful fiesta's is 155hp produces 190Nm where a BMW i3 is 168hp and 250Nm that's quite a difference in power delivery to the road. Sorry I wasn't aware that the fact finding police we're on my case otherwise I'd have been more factual. My hand has been well and truly smacked, I shall now stand in the corner and think about my incorrect initial message.
@BigCol78
@BigCol78 4 месяца назад
@@RDFContent it's not what I meant, it's not an ev only issue. In my own observations is that with the introduction of ev's there is less money going into the public purse to help repair or replace road surfaces, specially with ev's being road tax free atm. With the increase of the average weight of all cars not just ev's this does have an overall impact on the state of our roads. Now don't shoot me this next statement it's off the net. "The average electric car puts 2.24 times more stress on roads than its petrol equivalent, and 1.95 more than diesel. Larger electric vehicles weighing over 2,000kg (2 tons) cause the most damage, with 2.32 times more wear applied to roads. Such stress on roads causes greater movement of asphalt road surface, which can create small cracks. If these are not fixed, then they can expand and eventually develop into potholes." This is basically what I was trying to get at in my 1st message. You're perfectly correct about the maintenance of our roads, it's poor to say the least.
