I feel like Illumination plays it "too safe" with most of their movies in my opinion. They need to reach out and explore more like what they did in the Mario Movie more often
@@Mal-go5dl The whole franchise is very safe and protected by Nintendo, who, went after RU-vidrs that dared to uploads songs from their games.. Some channels went shut-down because of how abusive they are.

@@Marigold-iy7vy are you referring to the hacker that'll be forced to pay Nintendo for the rest of his life? Cause if so, that's literally one, single person
One personal pet peeve I have towards Illumination is all the filler that they cram into their films. Because the plots are so paper thin, the filmmakers have to stretch the runtime out just to hit that hour and a half mark, making the pacing really slow, and adding nothing to the story in general. The Mario movie had the opposite problem where there was thankfully no filler because there was so much going on, but the pacing was so fast that everything in the film was extremely underdeveloped. So either way, Illumination makes some of the most empty-feeling movies in all of animation history.
To quote Guillermo del Toro. Definitely want to save Hollywood for getting my dream job and stop all this madness in today's world. "ANIMATION IS CINEMA."ANIMATION IS NOT JUST A GENRE FOR KIDS."
I really want animation to be identify as a style or platform and not a genre. Because animation don't have a set structure or field it must follow. It's a style. A style is not a genre.
It’s also what Brad Bird, the director of the incredibles and The Iron giant said. “Animation is a Medium, not a genre”. He alway talks about how you can do anything with it, and his movies are usually for adults first and kids second.
I hate illumination bc i feel like they are part of the “animation is for kids” problem. They drag down the art form and since these are some of the most popular animated movies it cements in peoples minds that its JUST for children.
@@WakerOfTheCryingRain yes they are partially part of that issue, but the thing is they can be watched by anyone and not just children. they also made fuckin spider verse which shook the animation medium to its core
And who’s responsible for letting that happen? If only dreamworks and Pixar had the same level of marketing as illumination’s, animation wouldn’t be view as “for kids”, for instants dreamwork’s Megamind is a masterpiece yet that movie flopped because they didn’t give a shit about its marketing and THEY STILL DIDN’T LEARN THEIR LESSON FROM THAT RUBY GILLMAN MOVIE which was a huge flopped I also heard the movie itself was terrible they could’ve been like “oh shit despicable me had made more money than our Megamind film let’s have our future movies have stronger marketing” it’s doesn’t matter how good your movie is if no one knows about it that’s why awful movies are making more money than good movies because good movies don’t give a shit about marketing, people know more about the minions because they’re marketing is EVERYWHERE that’s how they’re popular meanwhile Pixar and dreamworks movies are less popular because they focus more on quality rather than quantity instead of balancing both quality and quantity

There's a difference between Nintendo and Disney. Disney completely ignores criticism in newer movies but Nintendo does acknowledge and listen to some feedback but ignore haters
"People want to justify the Mario movie as a great film when it's actually not." People can think the movie is good and can have reasons as to why. This is subjective. The people who did get upset at critics were unreasonable, but that doesn’t change the fact that just because they think the movie is good, that doesn’t mean they're "wrong."

Woah, easy. Nintendo is not more evil than Disney. They're old school. Besides, Illumination does make audience appeal despite the upbeat tone and quality level of their movies.
Yeah, Nintendo has made plenty of questionable decisions in the past and many of those like opting to use cartridges for the N64 and using mini DVDs for the GCN only affected themselves. And I know they sent plenty of C&D letter to fans making videos and games based on their IPs, but I wouldn't say they're worse than Disney. For once, Disney is a bigger company, they have a history of bad employment practices, they once tried to trademark the Spanish name for the celebration of the Day of the Dead, they have ruined they careers of many child actors and in Mulan's live-action credits they thanked the government of a Chinese province where there're concentration camps

I have to admit that I find Illumination's rise as one of the most successful animated studios kind of fascinating. I remember seeing the teaser for the first Despicable Me movie many years ago, and while I saw the movie much later in television I couldn't understand how popular it got until the second movie came out and the Minions begans appearing everywhere. As someone who has a lot of younger relatives, many of them grew or are growing watching Illumination movies like the Despicable Me/Minions, Secret Life of Pets, Sing and now the Mario Movie. I would not consider their movies to be awful (except for Hop and maybe The Lorax), but they haven't done anything excellent either, I only consider Sing 1 and 2 and the SMB as the only movies from them that I actually enjoye and would watch again Illumination's movies can't compete in a story level with even the weakest of Pixar movies or the best of DreamWorks Animation, they don't even reached the heights of other CG studios like Sony and BlueSky. I still think they have potential of doing something great with all of the talented artists working for them
The best movies of DreamWorks absolutely blast Illumination‘s movies out of the stratosphere. A How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda or Puss in Boots 2 cannot even be compared to Illumination‘s junk. That‘s like comparing Gordon Ramsay‘s best dishes to an industrial BigMac.

The fact that there are only 2 good Illumination movies (Despicable Me and Mario) is kinda depressing. EDIT: Yes, I know Mario isn't a great film. I just think it's a pretty decent 6/10 movie, which is kind of a letdown because I really expected this to be an 8/10. Still, it's good but not great. @@mardenborough. It was a bizarre mess featuring a mid plot with much to desire, getting the characters wrong, bad dialogue, out of place music, and the worst sin of all: having Seth Rogen play Donkey Kong. The only saving grace was the Easter Eggs.
To this day I still am holding a grudge against illumination for cutting out the song “Biggering” and deluded the original message of the Lorax by turning it to a cheesy, pop musical love-story. If illumination would’ve given the project to anyone else the movie could’ve been a sick corporate, rock-opera kids film that remained faithful to the original concept; considering it’s Dr.Suess’s DARKEST works and Illumination butchered it more than they have by advertising it with car commercials..
Plus, when The Lorax (2012) came out It was based on The Lorax (Original/1972) was very dark. I prefer 2012 The Lorax because It has the best song called "How bad can I be". *Sorry, if I'm wrong*
I know Nintendo did horrible things over the years, like betraying Sony, ending their relationship with Rare on a sour note, and ripping off the Super Mario 3D All-Stars game. But I don't think it's any more evil than Disney with their diversity nonsense and milking other properties they've acquired.
they want to shove diversity down everyone's throats, especially with the peter pan movie and mermaid 23. I mean they succeded in making diversity films back then with zootopia, moana, soul and even sony knows how to shine light to "diversity" without being a shtty corporate with the use of spiderverse(the gwen trans issue is a twitter thing and I don't hate the hints of it at least its not as obnoxious as disney)

Illumination tends to embody everything I've grown to dislike about most modern big budget CGI animated features, except somehow more bland and uninspired. I've only seen two of their movies in theaters to date, Despicable Me and The Lorax, and what was featured in those, along with the audience and critic ratings of their other movies, was more than enough to tell me what to expect about the rest of the studio's works. And even the Mario movie, from what I've seen and heard about it, sounds like it'll be kinda underwhelming. Also, to anyone that tries to justify Illumination for producing "harmless movies for kids", that feels like a disservice to what kids are capable of accepting. I do disagree with your statement about Nintendo being more evil than Disney, though. Sure, Nintendo has its flaws, but at least they still care about producing good content and appealing to the fans, unlike modern era Disney.
@@maniacaldude Sony Pictures Animation had the best character development I've ever seen from an animation studio... I wish the better for Illumination some time.
"Nintendo is a more evil corporation than Disney" While both companies definitely have their issues...hard disagree. Nintendo didn't slash 4000 people's jobs, give people less options for studios to get movies made at in the future and less possible distributors to go to in the future and buy out one of their competitors and put their whole company in massive debt just to have a bigger streaming catalogue and rights to several legacy characters and ips. They also didn't sue a dead child's parent's for putting one of "their" characters on their tombstone. And yes they made 3D allstars, but remember that the Disney Vault was a thing.
Also the former Nintendo President cut his own salary in half so no one would need to be let go during the failure of the Wii U. He believed no one should suffer for his mistakes and that the system not selling well was his fault.

I can't say I agree with Nintendo being more "evil" than Disney. At least Nintendo doesn't make a monopoly like Disney does. They also didn't thank a bunch of terrorists just to make entertainment. Also, Nintendo has more time to breathe when it comes to content. Disney makes and distributes so much that their *NON-REMAKE* live-actions films don't seem to get proper treatment. They're often unsuccessful in the box office *(since the 1950's)* and are often some of the most hated movies in history.
Yeah, Nintendo has so much integrity when it comes to 90% of their first party titles that I can tolerate their misdeeds, because they’re ultimately providing me a net positive of what I want to see from them. And they may be bonkers rich and still charge annoying prices on certain things, but they’re not a monopoly and I’m glad they’ve been mostly not participating in the AAA studio buyout arms race that’s been going on with the big tech game companies.
Many people think that "kids' movie" and "family movie" are the same when it's actually not. Kids' media is media regarded mainly for just kids whose purpose is distract them like a babysitter when everyone else is busy such as Sesame Street. Some kids' media are actually great for kids and have high quality to teach them important life lessons but most of them are just as meaningless overstimulation like dangling keys at their faces. Some aren't just only baby shows as some kids' media can target mainly older kids before puberty, that features jokes and references only familiar from that age demographics. I don't consider teen media (not Highschool musical since that's actually for tweens) to be kids' media as they can get very adult, explicit and edgy as hell, especially foreign teen media can get much more than just romance. Family movies' main purpose however is to bring families of all ages together that is not only for kids. They can explore dark themes even though it's not that obviously explicit and too heavy handed but like in a poetic way like many other movies do for general audiences.
And casual animated fan, the fandom itself like me consume much animated content but rarely talk about it since they find it ...ehh is mid in a good way. Which explains why I love rio 2 through catering to that specific cartoon fanbase
The good news is that illumination is starting an adult animated films studio with the goal of expanding their audience. But since illumination has a very one-sided approach when it comes to making entertainment, I'm VERY concerned about how "Moonlight " would make these "adult" films. However, I'll keep my mind open because I like illumination for what they are. I don't LOVE them compared to DreamWorks, but they're not THAT bad.
Why don't they just combine those two parts as Illumination? I think having it all under the Illumination banner would be easier to organize the content, which is why I'm against banners like Touchstone.
Illumination’s entire brand is playing it safe with bright colors, pop music and pleasing animation. It doesn’t make you think, it’s a cookie cutter movie for kids. This includes the Mario movie.
I surprisingly enjoyed the new Mario movie (and this is coming from someone who also doesn’t care for Illumination’s work). The animation looks more vivid and alive than their previous movies and I’m glad Nintendo was there to make sure that it pays proper respect to the source material it’s based on. Even though I think of Illumination as the McDonald’s of animation, financially successful all over the globe but making cheap junk, the new Mario movie was like that spicy chicken sandwich I had at a McDonald’s in Maryland that wasn’t bad and appeared to be made of actual chicken for once! Low bar to clear, but the Mario movie cleared it.
It's not a bad animation studio for say. The studio just doesn't try and it plays it safe. Pretty much basic compared to Pixar and DreamWorks. Maybe if they tried more they could have a bit more respect as a competitor.

The first two Despicable Me films are pretty good, but the third one sucks. Minions did even worse, though The Rise Of Gru was a slight improvement. Hop was unbearable. The Lorax was okay, though not the best Dr. Seuss adaptation. The Secret Life Of Pets films are basically the Toy Story films with fur and feathers… and it sucks. The first Sing movie was great, but I really hated the second one. The Grinch made me feel absolutely nothing when watching it. And as for The Super Mario Bros. Movie… I thought it was okay, but could’ve been a bit better. Also, I’m not extremely hyped or expecting anything big from Migration.
I didn’t even remember Migration’s name until you brought it up. I just know that it “that one Illumination duck movie” that was being advertised during the trailers before the Mario Movie. Kind of dumb for Illumination to announce such an underwhelming movie after they just came back from what many consider their best work.
Hate is a strong word. Illumination makes movies strictly for kids. Understandably critics will not like it, that doesn’t mean you should hate the studio. U can just ignore them
Yeah like imagine hating a studio just because you don't like their childrens movies?? Like I understand hating a company if they or their CEO did or participated in something shady, of course...
illumination films come from the idea that children are dumb and cannot handle mature themes and topics. they're obviously more susceptible to childish marketing like the minions, but they should not be deterred from being exposed to serious subject matter in much the same way that classic disney movies did. when you make films specifically for children and don't allow them to get a glimpse of how the world works, it will become harder for them to develop emotionally
All this hate hate hate for Illumination is pissing me off. Some humans can be very intolerable and then they have no right to have to fear for the worst when it comes to Illumination. It's next film, Migration is coming and it looks very good and also looks different compared to other films in the Illumination catalog. On Twitter, someone tweeted Migration has a good plot and people are like, "Illumination is COOKING!" and they're not wrong.
The Mario Movie wasn’t good, it wasn’t supposed to be. It was supposed to be fun, and it was. It was fun to watch your childhood game character in a movie. The story of the games was very simple so the movie was simple too.

Request: Could you make a video about the redemption arc of Sony Animation? Ever since I watched "Across the Spider-Verse," I knew that Sony did so much better with their recent movies lately ever since they released "Into the Spider-Verse," but now they're absolutely killing it. I also love the fact that now the company is actually trying to make good stories by hiring filmmakers, storytellers, and animators who are super passionate about their projects. And they're even trying new things too! For example, "Vivo" was Sony's first animated musical, so I'm pretty sure the company accepted it because they never actually did a musical before, and because Lin-Manuel Miranda was working on it for too long, they must have felt really confident about the movie because Lin is the guy who wrote the songs for "Moana." And for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the company actually hired a 14-year-old boy to animate the Lego dimension because they were so blown away by the way he remade the teaser trailer in Lego form that they couldn't help but hire him. And of course, they hired too many talented people to work on "The Mitchells VS The Machines," and that movie almost won an Oscar for many good reasons. I've never laughed out loud during a movie more than I did with "Mitchells." I guess Sony really tried to improve from their past, especially when they made the laughingstock that was "The Emoji Movie." They went from an animation studio that almost fell apart thanks to their bad movies *(except for "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." That movie was amazing)* to an animation studio that tried to be better by telling better stories. And thanks to their masterpiece that is "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," Sony is almost beating Disney now. And I can't wait for "Beyond the Spider-Verse."
Illumination is like that one FNAF or Minecraft RU-vidr that doesn't really try all that hard, but they still have a massive audience that eats up everything they do.

Like a hang around in pretty progressive leaning circles and we joke the every Disney Movies is 'first ever Disney movie to contain an LGBTq couple . . . for five seconds in a deleteable scene". It's not a message, it's just a signal. Disney itself also clearly doesn't understand or care about these things beyond their superficial signaling potential. Part of why the Owl House was so great as a piece of LGBTq aligned fiction is that Disney didn't even realize they were making it. So it was allowed to breath and be its own thing. Movies don't always have to be plot-heavy or have layers of complexity to be good or enjoyable. Abominable and Arietty are proof of this. The Mario movie isn't bad, it's not even sub-par, it's an average film. Average isn't bad, it's just not high art. I watched it with a friend and we both liked it; it was exactly what I expected from an animated adaptation of a simple game franchise with little to no storytelling. It didn't have to be more than what it was; now, if they plan on making a sequel, however, then they'd have to up the ante in their writing to keep people engaged, otherwise they'll just wind up with a copy of the first movie and people won't have a reason to watch it. Plus, the lighting was quite gorgeous at times-there are scenes in this movie that made me think, "Wow, that looks beautiful," when I saw them. There's value to be found here, and I think it's Illumination's second-best film after Despicable Me. Speaking of Despicable Me, while I think the sequel was a step in the right direction, the path the studio's chosen to go on afterward is not. They seem to think that just having child or childish characters on-screen is the only way to appeal to kids, but that isn't the case at all. I think a better direction for this franchise would be to allow the girls to grow up, and deal with the various issues that arise with that-and have Lucy interact with them more as a maternal figure. Maybe even make Gru and Lucy have a son and see how that influences the family dynamic. I don't hate the minions like a lot of other people seem to, but I also don't think they can carry a whole film on their own; they work best in synergy with characters like Gru and the girls, and that's how they should keep them. I haven't watched most of this studio's other movies, and the ones I have are mediocre or outright bad. I saw Secret Life of Pets and don't remember much of anything from it, which says it all. I think Illumination are scared to innovate because it might spook away the audience that likes these films. If they don't try to experiment, who can say for sure? I'm hoping Migration tries something new to break the mold, even if it doesn't do so successfully. I also totally disagree on Nintendo being evil. They're aggressive when it comes to defending their IPs and fleece their customers by charging exhorbitant prices, yes, but they at least have some semblance of integrity and care about trying to provide their customers with something they'll like. Di$ney straight up insults its own fanbase _consistently_ and charges ridiculous amounts for low-quality goods and services, on top of trying to brainwash children-THAT'S evil. Oh, and they also collaborated with the Chinese government, including the authorities of a district which runs *literal* concentration camps. This is beyond bad optics. Nintendo focuses on pleasing its customers and doesn't try to preach to them or tell them to screw off if they don't like a product, which is why they've stayed in business for so long and why the Rat is bleeding money.

I fully respect your opinion that Illumination is a critically bad studio but you can't deny that the movie goers that pay to see movies in theaters enjoy thier work enough to keep coming back. If they were just a shallow cash grab that didn't care about thier viewers, they wouldn't have succeeded consistently. Hell, Nintendo is so strict with thier ips, the fact that the Mario movie was produced at all is a shock. You keep saying bad story bad story in each of thier work without even stating how the narrative could have been improved, or even change to make the theme the movies were trying to portray, Which is shallow criticism that doesn't challenge Illumination but goes to identify your lack of critical thinking. Such as... Despicable me 1 is about a man who is clearly past his prime and foes through a midlife crisis when people younger than him have accomplished more than his entire career so in response he attempts to risk it all by completing an even greater feat aka stealing the moon but no one gives him a chance, thus he has to do it himself but realizes his own limitations aka losing the shrink ray and failing to retrieve it. He then finds a solution through the younger generation qith the 3 girls he soon adopts and qith thier influence he discovers a sense of longing he never knew before meeting them which eventually leads to him giving up what he thought he wanted for what he needed. Despicable me 2 continues his journey not to improve his own life but to improve his daughters lives by finding a female role model for them because he knows that he alone isn't enough to parent 3 kids. As for improvements, the villian plot was disconnected and used more as a medium for gru's love story, thus it felt narrative weak. What could have improved it was the themes in the movie of gru financially supporting his family due to his lack of employment, the villian could of used dr nefario to enlist gru to commit crimes in order to support his family but also with gru trying to have a relationship with his love interest but attempting to balance both finding a mother for his kids and providing for his kids, this duality being the central core of the movie where gru has to chose between 1 or the other. This way, the stakes are much higher and the villian plot would have been woven in more organically. Thats how you identify a problem with the narrative and develop a solution that would make sense Thematically instead of vaguely saying the story was bad. The lorax and grinch were extended adaptations that added more to the original story, yes they lost the point with the local and the new plot they added was just straight up filler, really, they could have just cut out the Ted plot and focused primarily on building the oncler and extending the destruction of the forest. The grinch was fine for what it is but the issue is that compare to its original iconic interpretation, this grinch turning good had less of an impact. Dialing up his "mean" personality would have made things more like the original. The point of all of this is that if you want to preach about how "person a" (aka Illumination) makes bad stories, be sure to call out the parts you hate and state your opinion on how it could have been better instead of providing essentially nothing to the conversation.
Another great studio to do a Zelda movie would be Studio Ghibli, just as long as it’s 2D and not 3D, because we all know how well Ghibli’s one 3D film turned out.
From what I've heard from Annecy news and reactions, I think Migration could be something special, it's also kind of different visually speaking... a guy who saw the first 20 minutes at Annecy spoke very well about it: he said it remembered to him Finding Nemo as kind of story of fear and discovery... In addition, this movie is written by an Oscar-winning director, so I'm really excited
I hope the talentless uncreative hacks that only care about "THE MESSAGE" get what's coming to them. Why give these spoiled brats "fair pay" when they won't even work? If there are actual writers who think things aren't right then I'll support them, but there aren't.
When will these companies realize that not all supervillians need to be sympathetic? Some people are just bad people evil. Not everyone deserves our sympathy. So sick of these same old uninspired sympathetic villains.
Maybe I don't want Illumination to be anything but entertaining lol. I loved the Mario movie and I would like more from a sequel. I really believe it turned out well as it did because Nintendo kept a leash on Illumination. It's one of those studios that CAN do great things, but it needs the right people at the wheel.
Well, with mario movie, lets be honest, not all films with weak story are bad, just remember Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, two films that doesnt have even a focused story, just a compilation of great animated shorts at the rithm of the music. Mario felt like that, an spectacle instead of a pretending story, so thats why i appreaciate this film, knows its a right to the point adventure and shows exactly that with comedy involved, thats why i dont like how critic hate the idea of having not "great story" due this is one of those films like Fantasia wich doesnt need even a plot necesily to evenexist.
@@gaothhermesk1289 , not really. Fantasia made it explicitly clear in the beginning that it would not have an overarching story. The Mario Movie set up a story from the opening scene
@@John-xr9ry well Mario movie doesnt seem itself as a great story it's more like a "right to the point" aventure without deep cpnflicts or storytelling
2:36 I'm sorry but this caught me off guard I turned and look at my phone stocked 😂 (you're honesty 100% right)
I was a kid when illumination started releasing their movies and no matter how garbage those movies were, I loved all of them when I was younger because children don’t really have standards for movies. I watched the minion movie so many times as a kid that I could remember the movie by heart. I’m not saying the movies are good, they’re quite the opposite, but I’ll always have nostalgia for these movies whether they’re good or not. (Also yes I did watch minions rise of gru on opening night with my friends and sister and we all wore minion costumes) I’m glad to see the Mario Movie doing so well because I really loved that movie even if it has its flaws and it wasn’t yeh best movie of all time.
@@sonicfanboy3375 That's not the point. The point is to argue against what Sophie is saying about kids not having standards for movies. I brought up _Norm of the North_ to prove Sophie is wrong about it.
Unpopular opinion The Mario movie it’s kind of terrible. The plot is bare bones they set up the star to be a major plot device but it barely affects the plot it only affects it at the end. Mario barely affects the plot and if Mario was not in it The only difference is that Brooklyn wouldn’t have been nuked. Peaches whole personality is girlboss. Humour was mostly not funny The only times I laughed Were when bowser, Luigi and the luma we’re on screen. The music is awful except for the soundtrack the original soundtrack was good. There’s barely any character development. The ending is worse than shark tale. The casting was mixed.
On Illumination as a Studio, 100% agrees even Mario can't be call a masterpiece in possibly all the ways......Illumination always had this problem and that why I personally never been interesting in 90% of what they do, I only have watch 2 films of them on theaters, Despicable Me 1 and Super Mario Bros, and pretty much those 2 are the best they have done, on that regard that I hope like SONY they might learn and someday surprise us, I hope they do................now I not agree at all on what you say of Mario here, yes we all agree story wise not that great, but...the STORY....ain't BAD NEITHER, I will say Despicable Me have more bones to the story, but for what was need it for a FIRST Super Mario film in animation, I think did very well, I not think have bad characters or pacing issues as many say, sorry I saw that film 4 times I not watch BAD FILMS that many times on theater, I only have done that for films that at some degree impressed me, and Mario did, I think the animation of the film is LEAPS above everything else they have done, I actually think Mario looks better than some PIXAR recent movies, of course is not SPIDERVERSE or Puss in Boots, but again for Mario, they really did go above their skills.....now do they just need to redo that for the sequel............they BETTER NO, for a first film was good they played safe, but if they do a sequel or a ZELDA film, they better find a good writer because the honey moon face will be OVER, I'm with you on that most they have done is mediocre at best and horrible and boring at worst but of that I took out Mario and the first Despicable me films, I don't think any of these are mediocre, they both are good films, flawed but GOOD, not masterpieces but not barely passable entertainment.....I will always say both are 8 out of 10 and I don´t understand a WORLD in which a film that is 8 out of 10 is consider a BAD FILM just for not been perfect.
The only good things about the Minions movie are the main villian, her husband and the villian family they catch a ride with on the way to the convention. Like honnestly, Id love an animated movie or TV series that focuses arround a seemingly normal family, but theyre secretly all supervillians or something. Like an opposite version of The Incredibles, or something.
Whoa whoa calm down man! Never thought I'd hear you sound THIS angry over an animated studio like Illumination. Though many of your comments about their movies were on point, I must say. To be frank, there has to come a time in the future where Illumination's quality and storytelling need to step up for the better and start appealing to both kids AND adults. P.S. "Nintendo is a more evil corporation than Disney" That's not 100% true, man.
People confuse “good” with enjoyable. Mario Movie is enjoyable but not a good movie (or at least not compelling), and that’s fine. Idk why people get so desperate to label it as good. I love Boss Baby, but it’s a horrible film😂 it’s not good but I still enjoy watching it
The best metaphor is Illumination films are.. junk food. Sweet and tempting at first, but after eating and digesting it we get heart burn.. then the eventual agony on the can. They look pretty, and they know how to hook kids which are a big demographic. But overall after the initial theater releases the films fall flat. Again, junk food. Pretty packaging that's it.
Let's face it the reason that the Mario movie was as successful and great as it is was because of Nintendo legitimately trying to make a movie that would lead to others not because illumination
Wdym? If Dreamworks did a Zelda movie with the same passion and effort they put into the Last wish, I guarantee it would be ten times better than anything Illumination could ever conceive! They'd be gods in human clothing! Lightning bolts shoot from their fingertips! (Better Call Saul reference lol)
You do realize it's the studio that hires these writers and tells them what to do, right? And which studio would you think would give more freedom to their writers to write a creative story? Sure a writer may be very talented, but if the company says otherwise, they have to abide by their rules. And if Illumination really made use of their writers "talent" then I don't think we'd be seeing their current releases of movies, as of now.
@@pitaalfereti58 Well, I do realize that every writer has the possibility of messing up a film, no matter how talented he or she is. Heck, studios will never know how the writer(s) they pick will handle the script *until after the movie's release,* especially if they pick new writers that are getting started.
I swear If illumination makes a Metroid Film That would be horrible because you see Metroid has a very serious tone Instead they’re gonna give it a childish tone but apparently they’re the only ones that make money
I don't enjoy Illumination that much, but there are two movies which aren't that bad in my opinion, The Lorax and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. I like The Lorax, because through some level of artistic perception, the story and message is decently good. As for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it's what I perceive as a 'full length cartoon'. There is some story, but the primary reason is to get several good laughs. The Super Mario Bros. Movie got it right for my personal 'full length cartoon' criteria.
It is intresting hearing what people on the critical side of the spectrum think about the mario movie, it's an uncommon and bold opinion and I respect it. For me, the mario movie was fine. It was a movie to just see with friends, turn my brain off and have fun. Mainline Mario games never really had a story, and I think they did enough for what could possibly been pulled from the source. Again, I respect your opinion.
In my mind the difference is that illumination makes kids films, most animated studios make *family* films, I heard a Hollywood director call it a "four corner film" meaning it appeals to everyone
Watching this video made me realize that I absolutely hate Illuminations art style. All of characters look like plastic noodles. Mario is the only one that looks good and that's solely because it's based on another style. A shame because it proves that they can make something look good but they just stick to the same ugly look.
Aldone I’m pretty sure you’re not reading this but do you think you’ll make a video on blue sky studios? It’s all right if you don’t want to make a video on blue sky studios
Illumination perfected Fast Food movies for families. It's cheap, safe, simple, fairly easy to mass produce, not healthy, but it's JUST tasty enough and checks enough marks for common family movie-goers to make their kids shut up for a while as well as leaving no big impact other than "haha that was fun". Not every movie has to be a "full course meal" (like Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks at their very best), and I think making the Minions (and their other properties) SO dumb and condensed to being mindless kids entertainment with emphasis on physical cartoon humour rather than witty sarcastic dialogue or being self-referential, is what makes it so easily CONSUMABLE for the most masses world-wide (crossing language barriers) because everyone universally can "safely" put the movies on without demanding the parents sit and explain their kids what's happening BECAUSE it is so bare-bones simple, even if that means undermining a great story just to dumb down the narrative so more people can follow it and not feel anything but " Aww, that's cute/sad. Haha that's funny". Illumination isn't trying to push any envelopes, it's in fact taking advantage of what will meet the middle-ground for what's assured to be a "satisfactory" experience, which will make families with SMALL small kids revisit their movies because it's a reassured source of mediocre but satisfactory entertainment. Vast majority of family people are not movie connoisseurs, won't ask why something is good or bad, the same way you won't think about how unhealthy that burger you got from Mcdonald's actually is. You just know it's branded for you to keep coming back to get another, even if it was nothing special.
I'm not a fan of Illumination, however, if they or any other studio makes a Legend of Zelda movie, ALL I WANT IS A REFERENCE TO VAATI. I NEED a reference to the grape mage! Literally the character that got me into LoZ, I don't care if Ganon is the main villain, Vaati was the only other reoccurring villain in Zelda, I just wanna see my boy getting the attention he deserves 😭 Thank you-
The first Despicable Me always made me belive that Illumination can be capable of greatness. They know their audience and that they don't have to try because money will come to them regardless, but being stuck in this endless zone of mediocrity must get hard sometimes for everyone involved. I'm probably being delusional, but If only they left a tiny bit their safe zone, we could actually get something for once that doesn't seem another cookie cutter project that puts on shame the entire animation medium.
I definitely agree illumination entertainment is not a bad studio it's just they need to change I think illumination entertainment needs to change and improve there animated movies I mean they did it with sing 2 and minons the rise of gru and the super mario bros movie or hell look at sony pictures animation this studio use to make terrible movies but look at them now they are not making great movies that are almost perfect or a masterpiece like spider man across the spiderervs illumination needs to change someday in the future
Illumination is the McDonalds of the animation industry 😂😂 (Despicable Me 1 + 2 is still good IMO but the 3rd one is stupid, literally the only good Illumination movie that is kinda unique)
Mario movie was what Mario movie was supposed to be, nothing more, nothing less Also Nintendo is not exactly a good company, but no way near as evil as Disney
