I did shows and flea markets from 1989-2000 when I started eBay. Just went to a few shows including the National in Atlantic City a couple years ago for the first time in decades. I came to the realization I will never set up for a show again in today’s market. It’s all eBay or whatnot for me. Shows today are exactly what you’ve described. I just go through value boxes and leave once I’m done. It’s stupid anymore.

As a newer dealer, I'm finding it's all about finding the right show near where you live and then making that a home base. After doing a circuit of shows this summer I learned travel costs are a serious factor. Two nights in a hotel in an unfamiliar city will destroy your margins, and your staying in bad hotels if you want to cut corners there. Gunshots, prostitutes etc. But shows are great to meet old school dealers that have deep industry connections ad might not care that much about "comps". Lastly, as far as prices, you definitely see most are skewed on the high side, but there are always a few dealers that are skewed the other way too, and if you are friendly and look for angles, deals are out there. I have left most shows with a stack of cards I can easily flip on eBay the next day, especially if you follow hobby trends week by week.

Hey thanks for commenting ! Thanks for sharing your insight and what you have experienced, really appreciate how you articulated all of that. Definitely right man, especially if your in a big city, Miami, Dallas is a good one, etc where they have those local shows, it can pay off for sure. And there are definitely deals, guys who like rip stuff and just sell it to rip more, you can look over raw stuff in person, ETC. I have respect and admiration for people who can go in and crush it at these shows. Great insight though, keep crushing it at these shows !
@BRIANCARRUTHERS
@BRIANCARRUTHERS 8 месяцев назад
Curious about your take on this… Everyone expects to pay below comps. When I set up at a show, buyers insist that it is only right to sell below comps like a dealer is crazy to want to hold out to get current value. The problem with this, it is a race towards zero. If every subsequent sale has to be lower, then the values of CARDS must always keep going down. I have respect for sellers that hold their ground. that is what keeps all card values from dropping like a rock. I don’t get mad at dealers who are overpriced, because if someone wants the card, they will pay it. That is the only way card values can go up. People just don’t get this simple concept.
@SCVSportsCards
@SCVSportsCards 8 месяцев назад
Yeah I agree. And that’s why I ebay auction everything. Let the market decide. I’ll do a video soon on why I think that’s the only way to sell cards. And that’s why I “overpay” at times as well. For stuff online. I agree with you, but not dealers that want 140% for stuff. Like 94-97% comps for cash stuff, you hang in there and have the right stuff ? I’m with you

Man, shows... small shows on a local level are nice, but big things, like the National, are INSANE, the pricing is ridiculous. At the National this July, I was looking at a Josh Allen patch auto rookie. Recent comps were 2k. The guy has it priced at 2.8k Im like could we go like 2200 maybe 2300? Naw. This was an over and over situation, people at sometimes DOUBLE comps. Which I get it, comps are what they are, but when you're not even willing to go 10% over comps when offered? INSANE I'll still go to shows within driving distance, but after going to some major shows this last year, I'll never travel long distance for a show

I love going to show just to walk around and look at cards (instead of buying them). There are a lot of nice looking cards that I did not know existed and I will ask the seller what they are and try to find them later on ebay if the vendor price it outrageously. i think one of the biggest thing for me or for anyone that does not live in US is that a show save on shipping and duty (which can account up to $15-20 for shipping and 13% duty on top of whatever card you buy), so show kind of work for me if I can find a reasonable price. However, most show now charge a lot per table and vendor has to make that back, so a lot of cards are priced too high. Thanks for this video. Wonderfully done.

For me, I'm testing it out & it's lower investment since they're local - table fee + gas under $75. Did a few, and it's good to get rid of $1-$5 stuff w/o hassle of shipping and/or cosigner fees, more expensive stuff I'm definitely seeing too many people want cards at under comps though which gotta work through & find right buyer willing to pay what the card's actually worth.

We set up at a local card show and can get $500-900 each time. But if you have to spend any $ on a holtel there no way your making $. I suspect some of these tables get perks from the people setting up. Only $3-$30 card actually sell to the average person.

Yeah exactly. Just like the average sports bet is $4, it’s not all about crazy flashy high end at 140% of real price. But yeah, I mean I would imagine for National and Dallas even, it’s a big stimulant for hotels of money, and since cards exploded, they know the drill and jam up the prices.

I love card shows. It’s a fun escape from reality just talking to people about cards but I get what you’re saying here . I will say there are plenty of deals to be had at shows. There’s plenty of dealers that see the value in selling local verses eBay. I’ve bought plenty of cards that I could grade and flip for profit if I wanted, but you just have to be patient . It helps to talk to people, too, sometimes I am interested in a card and it shocks me how much people will come of sticker My thing I don’t get is card shops . People are so nostalgic and talk about the need for shops . Why? When I go to one he just has a limited selection, and when I do find the card I like I can usually find it on eBay cheaper . I don’t feel the need to pay more to “ support my shop” and I get no gratification by getting the card right then verses waiting and getting it in the mail

Very good points ! I will in the next few months get to a video on shops, really couldn’t agree more. @@SCVSportsCards I think card shows you just have to have some people skills and some negotiating skills. I feel like sometimes I get good deals, because I’m a nice person . I just don’t run up to a dealer offering 60% not even willing to look the guy in the eye. Some people are so aggressive, and act like the dealers have to move their stuff and just desperate and you have cash so you have all the power. Some people just need to humble themselves and not be jerks and realize all these dealers at shows aren’t hurting for money As for the overpriced dealers . You just have to remember. Some dealers are good with just buying stuff. I sometimes wonder if the way to go wouldn’t be to partner with someone and set up a table not necessarily to sell but just have people come up to me with deals. Especially the guys that set up and have actual shops. They are their to buy and do dealer to dealer deals. They aren’t there to give you some screaming deal on a handful of cards

@@SCVSportsCards I collect Curtis Martin, my father and I have been since he was drafted and I took over at some point and just kept it going. He is a RB and extra cheap all around (comparably of course lol) I also just get a single rookie of the starting lineup for the Pats and Bruins. Hockey I will get a young gun and future watch auto of all starters, a Prizm and optic rookie of all patriots and then exclusively any and every CM card, I have a yearly checklist of all cards that I’ve created and check them off and search at card shows. @@SCVSportsCards my other positive for shows is they are far more kid friendly and my boys love to dig through the boxes and find cool cards for super cheap. eBay is always a great outlet for me too and I have a million saved searches but sometime it’s tedious dealing with it and shitty eBay vendors or people who price a $5 card at $20 and refuses to budge on the price but that happens at shows too. Overall my stance is always “whatever suits your needs and preference” if you like shoes, go to shoes and set a hard budget, if you want online, do the same because the money can disappear quick and the fees are insane, a $5 card ends up $10-$12 with the tax and the shipping

If I make some money great, I had a wonderful time Sports Cards did not pay my bills as far as the whole taxes thing everyone knows the LLC is good to have, but if you just taking Cards from your personal hobby, treating with people cutting deals, you tell me where the harm is and avoiding eBay fees and having to go through our crooked government?
