In this video Hugh tears into his distain against the 165 Networker Turbo. Do note all views expressed in this video are my own opinions and if you disagree then well issue of skill, Enjoy!
The 2+2 areas at the ends of the Chiltern 165s used to be 1st class sections before declassification, so when they refurbed in the early 00s they just did a swap of the old 2+2 1st class seats for newer 2+2 standard ones, but kept the main cabin sections 3+2 as they previously were.
I've never understood the 165 hatred. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nothing special, but 3 by 2 seating aside, I don’t think there’s anything particularly bad about then, for branch lines/shorter services, they do a reasonable job
I disagree but respect your opinion, the Class 165s are my favourite trains in the Chiltern Railways network but the only problem I have about the train is the tables, too small which proves the Class 168s are better than the 165s in terms of interior. but in my opinion I like the 165s and with that the 168s and the 165s are both my favourite trains in the Chiltern Railways network. I only agree with the seat condition, no charging port and the small tables but I disagree with the 2+3 seating, these trains are still my favourite even though you have a point about the 165s.
I'm pretty used to them. They were an improvement when they replaced the older units on the Marylebone, Reading - Gatwick and Paddington Lines (the last one before electrification) but they haven't aged well. Worst of all is substituting journeys on Cardiff - Portsmouth, previously run with 158's, now with 165's.
Electrification of the Chiltern Mainline should be done and at the same time electrify the Greenford Branch. And send the Chiltern 165s and 168s to GWR.
GWR do actually use their Networker turbos on longer routes. The ones local to me run all the way from Exmouth to Paignton which is a 1hr 30min journey, some of them stopping at every station along the way. I even saw one that was going all the way to Cardiff once ☠️. Still a lot better than the class 143 pacers that used to operate on this line though.
The good news is that Chiltern are currently tendering for new (or refurbished) units, which will also be battery-electric or low-emission diesel. I definitely agree about the interiors, I've been on some of WMR's ex-Chiltern 172s and the blue-red interior is dismal.
The chiltern railways may have be the only unelectrify line from Marylebone to Banbury/ Birmingham but from Marylebone to Aylesbury via Amersham they share tracks with the Metropolitan Line and also can run on electrified tube tracks on Harrow on the hill to Amersham
I was once on am unrefurbished GWR 165/166 for around 4 hours between Portsmouth and Cardiff! It was packed, hot and uncomfortable. I was glad to go on a 158 on the way back. It was only this year!
as i grew up travelling in the 165 166s on the great western mainline i totally agree with everything you have said about the 165s i must admit when Thames Trains were around back in the day they were better & the nteriors were much nicer & ive done several rides on the 165s in hot weather & sometimes it can be boiling hot in hot weather when the windows are shut anyway brilliant vlog
And in the west we still have several dirty 166s which haven't been spruced up and made slightly less terrible. They're fine for the little branch lines but not from Cardiff to Portsmouth
Have had Class 165/166 trains on the Reading to Redhill line for about 25 years, and they are showing their age now. They have tested Class 769 units on the line, but GWR have rejected them. I don't know what we'll get to replace the 165s. Class 168s would be nice.
IF Chiltern Railways actually invested some of their extortionate fares into new infrastructure and rolling stock, they actually share the 3rd-Rail electrified Metropolitan lines between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham, so they would only need to put the power rails down between Harrow and Marylebone, and the stretch from Amersham to Aylesbury. Half of the job is already done!!
Hugh, today I spent 12 dreadful dreary minutes on a GWR 165, then another dreadful 10 minutes on a Chiltern one as well, I did find a use for the cup holder, makes a great holder for my phone
I can agree with you there, I think these trains really need to be replaced especially the chiltern ones and the ones operating on stupidly long routes in the Bristol area. They are noisy and have 3+2 seating where it isn’t needed.I think that the Stadler flirts would be a good replacement for these trains on chiltern and I think the off-lease 175s would be good to replace the ones on long GWR routes.luckily some are being replaced by the class 230.
I appreciate the London to Amersham service so much I forgive the 165s, but yes they are very dated. There is no consistency if they run as 2, 3 or 5 carriage trains either. I have also had the experience of a 165 with no lights in the tunnel, it’s very creepy.
Perhaps it's the effect of Facebook on people of your age that makes you want to take a point of view and be so critical of things. The 165's took over from Derby-built DMUs in the late 90's and have given good service for many years. They're a British Rail design and were built in the UK and that's a rarity, these days!
A lot of these complaints apply to the Class 465s over in Kent. And we don't even have Air Conditioning on them. The death knell has been called for them though as the DfT have put out an ITT for the trains to replace them.
@@thetflthreeTrust Me The IETs Are Worse Because They Do Stupidly Long Distance Journeys And Their Problems Are Cracks On The Yaw Damper Area's Poor Bulid Quality They're Unreliable The Seats Are Uncomfortable Their Carpets Are Always Dirty The Catering Is a Joke and Overall The Interior Is Badly Worn Out First Great Western Don't Care At All Despite The Fact That Me Along With Several Others Have Put Complaints About It Many Times
@@thetflthree I went on the Chiltern Railways today and from South Ruislip to Wembley Stadium on a class 165 and when I was going home the class 168 came and I took it from Wembley Stadium to South Ruislip and 168 was more comfortable and clean and it was better than a 165
Never knew there was a train that is almost as bad as the Stadler Flirt's in my country. They share almost all problems except of a working toilet wich is almost never found in a Stadler Flirt or Kiss there is only one toilet for an 8 car set and it's broken.
I also prefer Class 168s and 375s more on Chiltern Railways and Southeastern respectively than a 165/465 because the latter’s interior is too narrow to walk across easily
Ok Hugh I completely agree with you. The state of those Chiltern 165s is horrific. They're so dirty and horrible I would never want to ride one of those trains. I'm lucky I haven't riden one they look 🤮
Whilst those GWR units are tolerable. The Chiltern ones are crying out for a refurbishment. They look neglected and very worn out. Not the worst trains I have been on. That would be the Class 142/143 Pacer units that would bounce and screech all over the place. Just ride one if you get the chance a preserved railway and see what I mean. Oh and using the toilet on a Pacer is an adventure in itself.
class 165 Chiltern Railways are a good trains and I disagree on your opinion their is nothing wrong with GWR class 165 and chiltern railways class 155 but I agree with them being electric trains
I spent a lot of time on those things and what’s worst about them is gwr putting them on stupidly long services such as Gatwick airport to reading and the resin why I hate them the most is the loud engines and the design looks like a pile of rubbish
The reason you hate the class 165 is because you have been spoilt as you keep getting new trains. Well I am sorry to say it is the end for London getting new trains as millions are now being spent on new trains for the northern power house.
They are horrible. They sit on platforms 1 and 2 at Oxford all day long, idling their engines!(they aren't supposed to but they do, and Chiltern Railways don't care). They make so much noise and create a lot of pollution.
I think 🤔 that the class 165 trains 🚊 are rubbish trains 🚆 because the seats 💺 are very uncomfortable 😳, dirty and could be worse than the class 158 trains 🚊. By 2030 in 7 time 🕰️, class 165 trains 🚆 are honestly hoped to be off lease from GWR - Great Western Railway 🚃 and CH - Chiltern Railways 🚃 🚆 . Class 165 trains 🚆 are second generation DMU - Diesel ⛽️ Multiple Unit trains 🚊. All class 165 trains 🚆 have a toilet 🚽 🚻 . 👍
