Hi everyone. This video is a few years old now, and I still get comments on this video from people asking me to draw their MLP OC. I am a self employed freelance artist. I don't just make MLP stuff. If you are interested in a commission, visit my main youtube page and watch my trailer video. That has all the information you need about how to get a commission. Please do not ask for a drawing in the youtube comments.
Just to throw in a second opinion, I don't use pony generator, I enjoy the show and I draw the characters every now and then, but I mainly draw my own characters or fan art for other fandoms. And personally, I have plenty of oc's that I've only designed and haven't come up with a name or story for yet. Lots of people start making their characters visually and have a hard time coming up with traits and attributes for a while. Hell, I even had a character who had a name and a back story and only way after creating her did I realize she had almost no personality, so I turned to other people to help build up traits for her. I don't think asking others for ideas for your character's is necessarily a bad thing, bouncing ideas off of other people can be great for character building and such.
I enjoyed using it to ponify characters from games I was in. But yeah, I think its ideally for people who want a shortcut and already have a character in mind
In 2013: Me: *uses pony generator to create two ponies* My first ocs!! Now: Me *Stumbles upon the 'ocs'* Oh my.... Heh, lets get ya two updated to _My_ style and fix up your personas. This actually happened a week ago with my first two pony Ocs Toxic Beat and Toxic Spirit or as I call them 'The Toxic twins' I had created them in 2013 when I first joined the pony fandom and after using them for two pony rps and no drawings they were tossed away into a drawer, never to see the light again. Last week I found them in a file on my computer and CRINGED to be honest before smiling and taking the pictures and redrawing them traditionally to my now recent pony style (Check my google plus to see what my pony art looks like) and I've finally got them up to date, I also use them more often now instead of letting them collect dust again.
I have an idea! What if people used the pony generator to create the basic design of their oc to use as an easy base for the actual finished product? It would make it so the art community would still have something to work with, and the pony generator would no longer be abused.
I'm personally not a Pony Creator person, but I have a couple of friends who justify that by saying "I use it as a base for other artists to get a basic idea of what my OC looks like for when they draw it", which, yeah, I can kinda see, but it's one of very few exceptions to my usual "Ehhh Pony Creator" attitude. xD
Shima Shita Either because of videos you watch and have watched on the account you are using. YT (actually the internet in general) will save data and will show ads of mlp if you watch that or cars if you watch that and stuff.
So I know people don't really like these but here is my OC. Her name is Pandora and she is an earth pony that grew up in Canterlot. As she was teased for being non-magical as a child, she became a magician and practiced the art of stage magic, how she got her cutie mark. She puts on shows and poses as a unicorn, wearing a black tophat with a purple band (her cutie mark) to hide the fact that she has no horn. She is a mare with a white coat and shortish pinky-parole hair that is rather wavy, and her eyes are a deep purple.
one day i drew a pony "oc" (nor really an oc) cause i was bored, but i really loved how it turned out. I kept it and im trying to create a good backstory. Her name is Aqua Tune
i only use the pony creators for a BASE IDEA. some where for me to start the design of my oc. a concrete plan. i might call it my oc at first. but once I've drawn my oc, it's nothing more than an extremely rough scetch.
What do you think about the pony generator being usex just to get an idea of what one's character is to look like and as a reference for the color palette?
My OC pony is Really original. His name is BreezyLeaf and he's a earth pony who once a got lost after getting separated from his parents in the EverFree Forrest...Yet dispite the terrifying stories he heard about the Forrest, Breezy somehow felt content surrounded by the unknown nature of the thick Forrest. This Curiosity and wonder filled Breezy with so much joy that he didn't even notice when a Cutiemark of a Leaf appeared on his flank symbolizing his love for exploring the unknown and uncharted places of equestria.Hope you like his story and there's a picture of him on my profile pic.
i know this is old and she probably changed her opinion on this since then, but i just wanna say i disagree that not giving your oc a backstory is lazy. Ocs are made for fun, to represent yourself or another character, they dont need a backstory
Same thing with my Arctic wolf character, Wolf maker stuff EVERYWHERE! CandyTiger is a tough arctic wolf with wings and a headdress and I got the idea from Animal Jam but the wings are from ME. I hate it when people just automatically make wolves with feathers and dragon wings without even getting The name or species, if you wanna see more facts about my character, read as much as you want! Species: Arctic Wolf Items, clothing: A tan headdress and Angel wings and sometimes has gauntlets on, Likes: Music, helping people, hanging out with friends, Drawing, animating, and sometimes sleeping or imagining of being in a popular movie or animation... Why he isn't perfect: He is a level 8 in flying when he really should be a level 10, His Foes call him names and he sometimes frowns and rests and doesn't do anything about it, and he isn't a king, he is a warrior, a shaman, and doesn't wanna be a king anyway... What he can do with his powers: He can fly, race fast, create ice or water with his paws and howl and sing the songs on the radio....
I am with you when it comes to OC creation, yes..I do have quite a few MLP characters I made using the generator but usually when I create my own MLP character I just write up a bio. I have a character who is unique to me, and that's Storyteller. Storyteller is an Earth pony stallion who starts off as a socially awkward and shy guy who likes writing but is terrible when it comes to using his voice (specifically he doesn't like the sound of his own voice and thinks he sounds awful) so he communicates in writing and expresses himself via the stories that he writes.
PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU! PICK A PERSONALITY! AT LEAST PUT SOME THOUGH INTO THEIR ACTIONS DAMMIT! I wish I could just scream this in the face of some people....
I used the pony creator to first make my oc, but that is the only time i ever use it. Then, I draw the original work. (I am only 12 and every person loves my work even though JustSomePainter11 is DA BEST!)
ok, good, now i know i'm not the only one who thinks the pony creator is abused. i have currently 64 OCs (not including the 160 fake pokemon dex) and now i have more confirmation that all of them are original ^^...though i DID pick out 6 and made myself an oc mane 6, with instead of the elements of harmony, they're the elements of oc: creativity, care, originality, backstory, personality, and fun!
yeah this still stands for any fandom character creator for not going outside of the creator generator to do new things and make the character unique in design and traits ,story .I've only used it as a early base to get a idea of what I want my oc to look like and what I could change in the hairstyle when drawing in my sketch book cuz drawing ponies aren't my usual style I mostly draw anime art . but great to try new styles without binding to one idea.
If you arent an artist then you could just pick a pose what fits your characters personality you want to come up with and add unique details, that is better than the generator. But if you wanna draw something you should never touch bases. Cause they stop you from learning doing things on your own. BAses should only help those who dont plan to draw and need a character design or pose.
KenotheWolf actually, bases can be a good start for artists starting out. I started out with bases I made with tracing them from how to draw books, then I drew things atop of them. As long as you don't stay content with the bases, you'll end up moving on and improving.
I only use pony generator(s) for practicing color schemes. I'm kinda bad at matching colors and its so much faster to use the generators to select colors and transfer my ideas into my drawings. Also, I usually try to make names and stories for my characters before I create them, but sometimes when I'm stuck deciding on a name I'll figure out the ponies colors and style to assist in the decision. P.S. I love your art!
My OC was made with that exact pony generator BUT before I even thought about what she looked like, I planned her name, personality, gender, race, back story. And after creating and saving her, I made her cutiemark using an editing program I have. I also like to draw my OC, too Oh and I love your drawings! I'm thinking about a commission now!
I agree. I only use the pony generator because I SUCK and I mean SUCK at drawing ponies. But before, I already knew her name, her backstory, her personality, everything. just used it so ppl can tell that it is a pony
i know this video is. quite old, and your opinion may have changed, i cant say, but i will say this. an original character is a character you created. this can be in design, personality, name, etc. but it does not mean that ocs that only have a design arent ocs. theyre not clones of anything, you still created that character, and this goes if you only have a text based oc with no mention of an appearance or design. my friends in discord servers often make picrews to create ocs, and then come asking for names. that doesnt make that oc any less of an oc, if anything its a more work in progress. there is no right or wrong way to make an oc, be it mlp, other fandom related or someones own story, and this idea that you have to have everything figured out does somewhat go against a creative process. my ocs often start out as designs, maybe ill have an idea of what their general demeanor would be but i barely start with backstories, names or anything like that. sometimes i use picrew and those dress up apps! sometimes i dont! but often times i figure it out as a i go, maybe i redraw them, its all situational this kind of line of thought where saying that creating ocs without having all the details worked out is a lot more stifling than not, and saying that because a tool is overused that people shouldnt use it. hell some people cant draw, some people are starting out with their design and artistic journey, what have you, and saying "you cant use this because people used this too much!" doesnt let people start that journey. if people had not been able to use these pony creators (or hell character creators in general) and using them was bad and something to condemn, but same went with bases, how many people today would have had a lot shittier of a time with learning art? tracing as a form of learning even if you didnt post it was horrible and punisheable by a "lmao look at this cringe person" or a da journal vague posting. picrews wouldnt be nearly as popular nowadays if people had been told to stop using character creators with predrawn tools alltogether. apologies for the thesis on a 7 year old video
this was created last year. this commet is for the latest video but i cannot find it please dont hate :) i like how your setting children and others examples. if you dont know what i am talking about :3 then yup u dont know but if u want to know keep reading this until you get it :) i agree with you. The blumming pony genorator is over powered. it is for fun not for oc's :) I use it to play and do my own oc's that i had made :)
May you please explain the details to me so I can look for Mary-Sueish type things, what species it is, where they live, what gender, and backstory? I can help you change things that are unnecessary.
Mad Munchkin I don't really watch any of his videos, it's really hard to understand him too. I'm only just subscribed to him because I heard about him through Mark.
I have never used the pony generator at all. I first drew my OC and cutie mark and came up with the rest on my own. I once wanted to use the generator after the fact that I made my OC but it doesn't matter anymore to me. I don't have money to do Commissions so I just watch videos on tips for drawing and use those. I also find it helpful to ask a friend who has done this before so they can help you out. I plan on doing *much* more to improve on my drawing skills in 2018. If you are reading this all the way through, thank you and may your adventures in creating become great memories to cherish and pass on to others.
i agree with you, people who use pony generator to make oc's are not true artists, unless you make a pony on pony generator and then draw it a little differently from the original pony.
Perhaps "Original Characters 101" is a better video name even if itself misleading... To be fair, while the show characters have unique names, stories, etc the manes and body styles are reused fairly extensively insofar as another character of the same sex and race/tribe/type may have the same body and mane shape/style.
Mad Munchkin Probably :) , but point taken. It's admittedly a bit more eye catching (and perhaps emotionally effective) to involve hatred (or pseudo-hatred).
Tbh a good fix for this would be people calling them “designs” instead of “ocs” An OC implies a character, a personality, backstory etc, or at least basic concepts like their name, powers or place in the media they are for. A design is just stuff put together you think looks nice. Although I’m begrudging in saying this because designs to me imply you at least drew or came up with it instead of using premade assets on a generator, the generator can still produce designs composed of specific traits and elements. It’s not a character if there isn’t anything more than a design
I like the game, but I hate most of the fandom (bad side which is 99% of it.) I only like the game, but the fandom has gone to s•••. So goes for fnaf. The games are okay, but 99% of the fandom is terrible. Also goes with other games with a terrible fanbase.
Can I still make an MLP O.C? People keep telling me I can't do it because I'm 10 years old but I think I can still make an O.C, it doesn't matter about your age... Right? Plus... I LOVE MY LITTLE PONY!!! And great O.C BTW💖❤️💖❤️
I would just like to thank you for a second. About 2 years ago I watched this video, and I liked it a lot. The thing was I didn't know the first thing about drawing, so I learned how to. After a while I wad able to draw my own OC and I was pretty proud of it. I'm still trying to improve and I'm actually trying out manga bodies right now. Anyways, I really appreciate this upload and the effect it had on me. Thanks a million!
Our Art sucks, we don't have any Talent. Can you judge us? no, we don't have any. This is the Basis of mainly young children with no idea how to correctly use paint. I can't say the same for adults but thats just coming back to my first point. I built my OC from pony generator, not long ago, but this is because i had help from a person who actually knows how to make excellent art. Without him i would have never made a single piece of content or had this new OC design. In fact without him i may have never developed into a beginner animator. You have to take the fact that some people just doesnt have the talent or is too lazy to take the time to actually work on it. Your Rant kinda hurts my feelings, by putting me out there. I feel like i could have done my own crappy OC, But why do that when you can just make a character so easy? "Yeah, this sucks, the people who use this have no creativity, or blah blah" Yeah, please leave us alone.
If you want to improve more, just start off on the pony generator to look at what you would like it to look like. After that, use a base and use that to practise your OC on. Once you get comfortable with that, slowly advance forward to find out what your style is. It is literally about PRACTISE. The more practise, the better it will be. P.S. If you ever post your OC on sites such as DeviantArt or social media apps/websites, and you used a base, credit the artist who made that certain base if you know the original artist, or even just ask AND credit the artist instead.
I'm not the type that makes ocs but,im gonna start making ocs,so I decided to start watching your videos so I can learn to make a unique oc,and in my style
mad munchkin, I am working on drawing an oc, and I have drawn one on paper, but I can't draw it in photoshop or anything. it's just too complicated for me. and yes, I have watched videos on it. I've watched almost every one that there is. I am wondering if you would be willing to draw it for me, considering you are very skilled at it. I can send you a picture of my oc I've already drawn, then you could draw it in photoshop? I have tried everything so please reply. -Wolfie P.S. Are you Scottish? P.P.S. If you are Scottish, yay nice to have a Scottish fan. kinda rare in my opinion.
Mad Munchkin, as an artist and a writer I must agree on your stance about generators. What truly disturbs me is that people trade looks of these generated ponies and ask for people to name them. I agree with you that sometimes a story should come first before even a name of look. If you try to make a look for your character first then try to come up with a back story, it might not even fit the character by the time you are done. Your videos have inspired me to start working on one of my own so that's how I can understand all of this. Also why do people not understand artists need to get paid for their work? I don't do commissions that I ask for money for, mostly by my own choice and lack of confidence and other reasons, but I know what it's like to work as an independent contractor and I also work as a massage therapist myself. Geez... have people never worked a job or taken a basic business course in high school? I will never understand laziness and entitlement... go on with your bad self, lovely! We love you!
oh my god i remember watching your pony videos including this one when i was like. 9 it feels so funny to find your channel again now that im 17 while looking for pony makers
What I do, is I write out everything about my OC, in a autobiography-like way, then I go onto pony generator, plan out what my pony might look like, than attempt to draw that oc, then change anything I dislike..
I used to rely on on the pony generator but after seeing this video I immediately started drawing I probably wouldn't if started drawing seriously as soon as I did without this video Thank you for making this video
thank you for that little artist rant at the end :D im not an artist (i mean i draw and doodle and stuff but thats for shits n giggles) but i dont like how some people just dont understand that this is you yall make a living, and i just like little rants like these idk why lol
I agree 100% MadMunchkin! Although to add somewhat of a defense to those who are new to the concept of OC, some are only starting out and have yet to understand that OC means 'original character' not 'own creation'. Ponies are not creations, but are characters with soul and backstories. Thank you for reading, and keep up the AWESOME artwork. Big fan. BRO-HOOF FOR THE ART RANT! I am a fellow artist, and I get so sick and tired of people taking our hard work for granted!
This video is by far my favorite RU-vid video I have seen. Your motto is something that really speaks to me. I am one of the people who have once used the pony creator but it does have great limits. I really have to say, your oc is very unique and by this oc, it tells your viewers what you love doing and I've never seen anything like it. I would love to make a digital oc drawing but I Do not know what to use or if it costs something. I'm not asking you to make an oc drawing for me but I wish you to keep doing what you do.
Hi, I've watches a few of your videos for a while, and in the video why you hate alicorn OCs I completely relate to when Marry Sue called you Irish, when you said you are Scottish and I actually feel what you felt! But the last time someone called me Irish I literally half-screamed at them "I'm Scottish!" it gets really annoying the 13th time...
I feel no shame that I used the pony generator. I like how the generator looks like they are actually from the show. I created my character to be different then my normal self, because I wanted an escape from myself. I also used a random name generator to come up with: Crescent Forest. I came up with a story about her immediately on hearing the name. A unicorn that likes walk the forest at night and helps Luna with animal's dreams instead of other ponies.
only thing I do in pony generator is just randomly click through the features, until I see something I like, and then sketch down a basic sketch, that looks somewhat like the thing on screen
What I would recommend is to use the pony generator to make a pony template, take a screenshot, import into an app such as fire alpaca and then add your own touches! :3
My style of drawing is not as good as yours and I'm glad that you actually do this for free for people who don't want to draw their own OCs, I play Animal Jam and my profile pic is an pic from the Internet and now I feel guilty because I was so lazy that I didn't go draw my own pic for my channel... Anywho, keep up the good work! 😃
When I went to make an OC with a brony friend of mine (one for me and one for him) we made our ocs background, personality and even had the cutie marks planned out based on the previous mentioned. Then we printed out bases and pictures to choose from for the OC and its cutie mark. Once we did that we tested out the colors (with my art supplies, everything from crayons to paint) just to get the perfect shade. After that we went to the pony generator and created them based on all the previous mentioned. I have on my computer my personal OC and although the pictures are from the pony generator, I made my cutie mark and a little chart of growth to see in which age I would start developing more about the OCs life. So it came in handy (like mad munchkin has said) but i did prefer to create mine by sketching and editing her in my own personal way. I even made a couple dresses and outfits for my OC and my fellow Brony's OC.
I usually put an element of myself into my OC's to make them both more original, and also connected to me. My main OC's that I have are Avidia, Paintbrush, Pebbles, and Penelope Punctuality. Avidia is a lover of books, and loves reading. I really love to read books, and enjoy different stories, as well as fanfictions. Paintbrush is a novice painter, or in another sense, an artist. I love drawing, and am just starting to learn to paint, and I enjoy creating art, like Paintbrush. Pebbles is a very unique "pony" since she is a pony/ dragon. She has a dragon's tail and claws on her hooves. She is unique, and weird, just like me. And finally, Penelope Punctuality is always on time (if you didn't guess from the name) and has an organized chaos, like me. All of my OC's, except for Penelope, have been drawn by me, and the only reason I haven't drawn Penelope, is because I am not skilled enough to draw her fancy updo she has for her mane. When I created an OC that didn't share a trait with me, then I lost interest in the character. I had an OC once by the name of Patchwork. I had a great idea behind her, but she didn't have anything in common with me. She was a seamstress, and loved making dresses like Rarity. Yet, she was an earth pony and was a bit more limited in her creations. I found it difficult to relate to her and enjoy her as an OC since we didn't really share interests. And so, Patchwork faded out of my mind as an OC. I would like your opinion on how I create my OC's if possible.
I understand your reasons you don't like the pony generator. I like using it to design my characters and pick out the colour scheme then I draw them in my style. My three OC's are based of three aspects of me: one is a teacher because I'm studying to be a teacher, one is creative/art and my favourite loves gardening. I have background stories for them because I find creating character bios the funnest part. Also your OC rocks ;)
I understand your point, but I'd like to add the reason I like to create the look before the story is because creating a look for it helps me figure out their personality. I just thought I should put that out.
i created my own from the Pony Generator and have a name for it and backstory. It is pretty much a representation of myself (with a few modifications) and i love its colors as well as her personality. Considering this, as well as that i am in Jr. High and my parents wouldn't let me buy a sketch as you suggested, would you mind this?
I love your accent lol. I'm Scottish too! #ScottishSquad And I'm fine with recoloured "OCs", but if the person who made one is claiming it to be an original "OC" or "theirs", that just makes me rage! XD.
Thanks! You helped me realize how stupid the pony generater is. I've honestly always hated the layout and, well..- how "straight" looking the character is and that you can't even name it on the website. While I was watching this i started writing the backstory and name etc of my character and then I started sketching the form and look of my pony based on its backstory, name , etc. thanks once again!
I personally draw my own pony oc's but I use the pony generator to get a reference. I change the generated pony a lot but I like having a base. I definitely agree with your opinion though. Keep it up ❤️️
Funny thing is, I played the Pony generator earlier today and wasn't planning to watch a video about it lol. But I did draw it on paper first! I just used the generator to see her colors in front of me instead of just imagining it. My new OC's name is Bubble Ice. She is a teen unicorn who's horn got cut off by a sword that her friend found, and they played with it. The accident made Bubble feel worthless, but her friends still supported her. She made her own shoes, looking kinda like Luna's, so she would feel more special, since shoes are usually only worn by royalties. A random pegasus had to remove her wings, possibly due to injury or lameness, and Bubble saw her chance and stole the wings. She sewed them onto a thing that she could put on. If she couldn't be a unicorn, she could be a pegasus. But she realized, she would be a flightless pegasus, and was depressed. But in the end, her friends made her realize, she doesn't need wings or a horn to be happy! So she lived her life like an earth pony :) Oh, and just to mention, she had no magic left in her horn, it couldn't do anything but slightly sparkle. You may be reminded of Tempest, but honestly, I don't think I thought of her while making Bubble Ice xD Oh, and Bubble's cutie mark is a feather stuck in an ice cube... Sounds random, but it works :P
I've used that before and I wasn't to..."interested?" you could call it. Before I had found a pretty cool 3d pony maker which I find a lot easier to use, pose, create, and move your character as wanted. And with your point at the beginning about people not making backstoried and names for their creations; I completely agree
I used to use the Pony Generator to make my OCs because like you mentioned, I was just that lazy, now I learned to make my OCs the way I want them to be without ripping them off out of another character
I understand this completely! While I am a good artist, drawing ponies is not one of my strong suits. And a lot of the features in the generators do not have the options I like to use for my ponies. I usually use generators for creating a general subject, and then draw a character sheet on paper. This way I can add the features I want for my ocs while keeping the actual image looking much neater than if I had drawn it without the subject. And I agree that you shouldn't go straight to the appearances, and you need to create depth for your character before creating their appearance.
I have never used a pony generator my friend helped me with mine so she's got a background story good name that always pops up in my mind thanks my friend :)
Thank for the recommendation to stay creative. I didn't know Maddie was a Clydesdale. That is so cool. :) I really like draft horses. Their unusual bulkiness and strength is very exotic and inspiring to me. They seem to be a good representation of an earth horse. Earth ponies are very underused and underestimated in the fandom. Yet earth ponies can still impress me. My favorite MLP character is Apple Jack, who is an excellent example of an earth pony. I have been watching the fifth season. There are two earth pony characters that really impress me. Trouble Shoes is a misunderstood draft pony, who likes the rodeo. Tree Hugger is an unexpected earth pony, which an affinity for New Agey vibes. Maddie is a good representation of an earth pony too. The most obvious sign is lack of horn and wings. Another tell tale sign is fluffy feet, which often occur in draft horses. I am working on my on OC, named Myth Weaver. She is similar to MLP characters, and so is so close to being fan art. However I drew her in my own style. One influence is Shetland ponies. It is amazing how real horses could look so cute. It can take a long time to design an OC, because lots of trials need to be done. One needs to draw the character many times, before they are happy with the results. I thought I was done with Myth Weaver. Then I watched some Shetland pony videos on RU-vid as reference. I observe how they move and how they function. Then I realize that I should make Myth Weaver's legs shorter. I guess it is back to the drawing board with her.
