I lived in London for 23 years. Hard life as hell but each time you thinking it gets better something comes along to drain all your effort. Economically the country every 5 years or so something major happens and puts it's people in square 1. This has been the case since 2007-8. I will never know when I will stop existing and start living. The only way is when I get out

I was born in Manchester 6 decades ago. I left the UK when I was 25 for much the same reasons that you did. I was very unhappy with the weather and the self limiting attitudes of most of the people there. I never felt like I fit in and left for the US. I eventually got a greencard and then US citizenship and married an American girl. I've been to the UK on vacation but I was always happy to get back to home in the US. I've had a much better lifestyle than I think I could have had in the UK. It's not all been easy but it was way worth it.

@vinanddex
@vinanddex 8 месяцев назад
@@lolabradley6548 - I answered an ad in the jobs section of the Sunday edition of one of the big newspapers, can't remember which. It was for a computer programmer for a contract company in the US. This was pre-Internet so I had to write and mail a letter to the US. They invited me to an interview in London, liked me and then I had to apply for a US work visa through the embassy (an EB2 visa). As soon as I got to the US I applied for a green card. It took a couple of years to process and cost a couple of thousand $'s for attorney fees. About 10 years after the green card I applied for citizenship which was another $2K in fees.

@@lolabradley6548 don't know who you're asking... but my employers said they can get me a work visa to the US since they do business with US companies so it's really not that hard tbh. Sometimes they can pay travel expenses too.

Fully agree with you! I'm from east Europe, moved to London in 2021. I expected a lot from this city, first few month I was so exited and stuff like this, but before I just got to depressed, the people there are not connected, nobody is smiling on the street, the prices are ridiculously high, getting out with friends is too expensive and you spend a lot of time just on the way. One of the biggest problems for me is the weather here, can't enjoy my life without sun, and here most of the time you won't see it. I decided that this summer I'm gonna move to Australia
@erine.5680
@erine.5680 Год назад
As someone who left Dubai for London lets clarify it has to do with your priorities obviously.Weather: It's basically like 7 months of summer and 5 months of fire summer (Australians will be familiar with that), on those 5 months you can't take walks outside without being unable to breathe ,get a migraine , feel sick,you have to stay in air-conditioned indoor spaces , forget going out for picnic , going out for a cup of coffee under the sun and having the breeze comfort you,no. I got a heat stroke 4 times within one summer season. At least in London no matter the weather you can always dress appropriately and go out and about. Landscape: One of the things that humans also really cherish that hasn't been brought up is nature. London has numerous vast open green spaces, your are basically in the city and next to lush green nature within minutes. Health: I didn't know until I got to Dubai that sandstorms can make you sick and allergic at the same time. If you're not used to it there is a high chance that your immune system will go crashing down. I lived there for two years and I was ill almost all the time but especially during spring season when the sandstorms are the wildest. The healthcare system on the other hand in Dubai is superior to London by far! Activities: let's not even compare the two, London has infinite activities and exhibitions to choose from, one of the best collection of museums in the world, and if you are a fan of stand-up comedy,well you'll be disappointed in Dubai. Safety: let's start by telling that Dubai is indeed very safe and I felt that way those two years I lived there. In London I lived for 6 years and never had any incident, although we always hear in the news about the high crime rates and there are certainly some areas I never felt safe walking there. I live in Earls Court btw. People: Both cities are highly multicultural so there is that. Prices: Dubai is indeed cheaper than London you can find a decent 75 M2 flat with built-in closets and balconies for 3/4 of the price that you would probably find in London, minus the balconies. Groceries I found were quite similar though. But food-wise quality was much better in Dubai in general . City planning/ transportation: in Dubai you basically have to drive everywhere, a bit like in the US, public transportation is not as well connected and well-planned as in London, if you like biking your way around Dubai is not a pleasant place for that at all. Buildings wise, in Dubai is like you live in the future and the buildings in London is like you live in the past so, preferences .. Location: in London you are a few hours away from many European countries with completely different culture ,architecture landscape and climate.In Dubai your closest destination to see a somewhat different landscape/nature/ Climate is a 3:30 hours flight to India Delhi. You have to remember Dubai is in the middle of a desert. You get your car for a road trip and you will always and only see,sand, you'll be surrounded of a sepia filter colour dead soil.Thats it.

Yes, the issue of weather is actually so often ignored. People complain about the weather in London or Uk but I find that its actually the most suitable and comfortable taking everything into account. Most days in the UK are just cloudy and chilly which is exactly the kind of weather that is awesome compared to scorching heat or typhoons, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.

I am English and emigrated to Australia. When I lived in England there was never any money for the people. I came to Australia and it is so different, yes there are problems Australia is not immune from world inflation. I then went back to England band straight away was told there was no money. Britain is far richer than Australia. Britain is the 5th largest economy Australia is 14th. When I pointed out to people how much better off people were in Australia they would say” yes but Australia is a rich country” they all thought Britain was poor because govts gave them that impression. When Thatcher was in power she privatised the nationalised arms company and received a hefty number of shares from the company that bought it, as did numerous MPs. Shares were not offered to the public. This is how govts are connected to the arms industry and so keep buying weapons, with tax payers money of course so as to keep the 😊share price up.

The bit about culture, heritage and history is so true! The London Tube was such a pain to use. No 5G signals, the transfer from one line to another is a mess. A lot of it are not very accessible for the disabled and it was such a work-out to drag a suitcase around. FFS! Even the newly-built Elizabeth line was delayed when I tried using that to get to Heathrow. The only thing the Brits has to be proud of is that it was the first in the world. Jesus Christ, congratulations! It must have been amazing for the Victorians but what about now? What about us who live in the modern era? Why has it not been upgraded since?!? Same with the trains, road... Everything are so expensive that my AirBnB host rationed heating and offer me a jacket. Honestly, the first couple of weeks in UK was great but everything starts to grind you down until you just start to lose feelings.

You ended where I was going to start - digital nomading is the answer. London is one of the best cities in the world to live in - IF you can afford to buy a nice home in a decent area near good transport with a good community around it - families and professionals, not HMOs and social tenant areas. Combine with travel and digital nomad out to a sunny spot part of the year, and you're golden. Coming back is always wonderful. After leaving London for 6 years, I've just bought a 2 bed house near London city airport, zone 2/3. I can travel to Europe and beyond every month, and now saving to buy my little beachside house in a hot equatorial country (not saying where because westerners will flock there and drive the prices up). It all depends where you grew up from. Emmigrants from Africa and India have much to thank UK. I live in Nairobi, Kenya and I sincerely cannot complain as the weather is heavenly and food prices are well under control. If I divide the income of an average person's income in Europe by a factor of 10 the salaries very much compatible. Unless we are destroyed by untold calamites the third world is a force to reckon with. Dubai and Singapore are passing clouds in the econmic sense of the word and you of all people with your educational background should know best.

Going back to Japan mate, my pounds will go a lot further there and I miss it sooooooooo much Also regarding London and "culture" - there used to be a lot of subcultures you could interact with in London. Growing up in the suburbs coming into London at the weekend was the only time I could interact with music and/or art scenes but over the last 10 years so many venues have closed and have been moved out of central, especially towards East London. However, before Tottenham Court Road area had so much to enjoy, now it's just for tourists and "American Candy" stores

I live in a coastal city about 70 miles from London and where I live is getting worse. I hate it here and I am constantly on edge to the point I am now on anti-depressants. I'd leave tomoorow if I could. I firmly believe by the end of the decade, the UK will be a 3rd world country. The UK is a shitehole.

I’m living in Ubud, Bali now. Moved from Jakarta. I’m just sick and tired of heavy traffic, pollution, ugly buildings, constantly surrounded by concrete houses but mostly the people I’d love to avoid 🤨. Now I’m surrounded by nature and can 🌟 stargazing at night. The only downside is Jakarta still offers great food. I miss them daily.😅

I'm living currently in Washington, D.C. and the crime is awful the past couple of years here. My cousin was almost killed because of gun violence, and I witnessed four people being shot behind my apartment. I've lived in the U.S. for most of my life, and lived in Paris a couple of times (briefly). I think the UK and the U.S. have somewhat similar problems (regarding disparity between income vs rent prices, inflation, etc.), except the U.S. is much scarier to live in because of the gun violence, politics, and high costs of healthcare. I think it depends where you're coming from and where you're going. I wanted to live in London, but who knows now?

Dubai is the best place for you to have a home base to escape the summer I recommend Malaysia. The weather is 26 to 31 degrees all year round, they speak English, cost of living is probably 1/3 of Dubai with high infrastructure they rank high in healthcare. The best part is Philippines and Indonesia geographically protect it from tsunamis so you don’t have to worry about that either

I'm a US/UK dual national who has lived decades in both countries. I lived in Abu Dhabi from 2010 to 2015 and in Nassau Bahamas since October 2015. All of my changes in country have been due to my work. My favourite country of redidence is the UAE. I enjoyed living in the UK,. I haven't lived there since 2010. However, I visit the UK at least once per year. I'd say the UK is my second favourite country. I would never live in the US agains. Although I left the US in '98, I visit it once or twice a year. I can't wait to leave the Bahamas. My plan is to immigrate to Argentina when I retire at the end of the year. I've been to Argentina four times, twice in 2023, to see if I would really like to live there.

I had never been to London but very ,very honestly Paris had hugely disappointed me with its old fashion ness and lack of greenery. I know there are lot of parks in and around paris but even the parks have paved walkways , mowed grass and less large green covers. I think cities are most livable when they are covered with large trees and less concrete. Weather is also a let down for people like me but well i think wevas human beings can always adjust to that. And the worst thing about paris was the huge number of Arabian and African people in that place. I say it again and again that my Irish missionary run school in messy Calcutta of the 70s, 80s and 90s looked, felt and appeared much more european than paris appeared to me in 2023 and that was very, very sad for me.

The world's way more than just the UK or even the most beautiful Vancouver, tho I still visit once in a while but only in the Summers as no way anyone should endure the miserable winter in London / Vancouver when u can hv the Caribbean where I am now, tho only for a few months as I've new venues in mind literary once every few months. Love seeing the world for "free" and work with lovely folks from all walks of life in different corners of this beautiful planet! Everyone should try it out & u've nothing to loose. Do it now!!!

I was thinking.. but it s too hot in the summer and you responded 7:18 😆. Humans definitely benefit more from living in a sunny environment it makes us happy. I live in Tangier Morocco the farthest point you can be in Africa before the European continent starts, weather is beautiful a Mediterranean climate not so hot not so cold, the nature is beautiful beaches forests mountains even desert in other cities in the south. all of that mixed with a unique culture and history. people here mostly chose to go and live elsewhere for economic reasons if they have enough resources they don t think about living in other places.

Once a country start the spiral, the next step is Venezuela.. or worst. As humans we always want to be in a better place, but we should always have perspective..

Every country has its problems, you can’t keep running away. You’re too young to appreciate things like tradition and history. I was the same at your age. It took me years to settle. England is not ONLY limited to London. There’s the rest of Britain to explore. Glorious places. I’m not from London but I’ve been a few times for work and training and I hate London. Well yes and no sure we started the industrial revolution (but that wasn't London, it was Shropshire first then the West Midlands and the North) and all that entails but that's really about it. That's not culture though. In the UK the word culture has lost its proper meaning to mean...well pretty much any crap, but really it means not just art, music, architecture (all of which are and were better and nicer in other European countries) but how people live their lives i.e. cuisine, drinking culture...so massive fail for Britain on those 2. Bottom line is the quality of life is shite in the UK for a variety of reasons.
