Bravo! I’m leaving the uk for Paris next month and going to be living there indefinitely. Was in Bordeaux also last year. I love France. I understand it’s just a process that I’ll be going through in order to become a resident.

I am resident in France now. I was a Londoner for the first 44 years of my life. While I think sometimes, that I miss London, it's London as it was, that I miss. That London no longer exists. It isn't just a spatial separation, but a temporal one.

I'm about to move back to Australia after living in London for four years, loved it here! As a software engineer on a pretty good salary I have a great life here. Gonna miss the proximity to Europe compared to Australia, long summer days, public transport and the pub culture / park drinking. Won't miss the eternal winter darkness, grey skies, cost, inequality and touching 12 other people while standing on the tube going home from work.

Made the same decision 1 year ago and moved to Kuala Lumpur instead. Amazing weather, friendly people, 1/4 - 1/5 the living cost of London, first world infrastructure and public transport, very modern and tech forward, much safer than London (ahem knife crime and a general rising crime rate in London, even worse considering I used to live in Barking). I stay in essentially a place as fancy as One Hyde park (right in the middle of KL, next to the fanciest mall in the city) (residents in my building drive Rolls Royces and Bentleys), for less than what I used to pay for a studio flat in Barking.

I only left at 51 and wished I'd hv started 3 decades earlier!!! Hv been on the road for 9 yrs, covered more than 30 countries mostly here in Europe where I get to work & enjoying literary every corner of the beautiful planet instead of paying up to my nose for nothing, tho I used to love the city to the moon... not to mention months of wet & miserable winter & how cold & edgy people are these days and don't even talk to me about the evil woke culture where the elites are secretly trying to imprison all as these blood suckers will drain u high & dry whereby they live in the cloud nine themselves! Since moving away I've decided to live only a few months in each country I visit and in spite of moving around once every few months yet I managed to save 2-3x more in comparison to when I was working just to pay all the bills where I could never earn enough to secure a decent property, ever! I still hope for massive turn around for the country I love yet I'll encourage anyone to get out of your comfort zone and u shall be surprised by all the experiences money can never buy u! Don't be afraid as life has much more to offer outside of our comfort zone really!!

I agree everyone should periodically review whether where they are living suits the life they want. Everywhere has disadvantages so it's just working out what is the best balance for you. I'm 62 and if I were younger I wouldn't stay in London, because I wouldn't be able to afford to buy a house, because economic immigration, people using buy to let properties as pensions and international investment has caused huge strains on the housing market. I always thought I would leave London when I retired (I arrived to go to university) but now that is drawing close I am reluctant to give up the amazing cultural and other opportunities it offers.
@rodolphodecastrorodrigues7457
Most jobs offered in London are in hospitaly, cosntruction, cleaning and warehouses. Those are basically the only opportunities for foreigners. At least construction is quite well paid, but it it not imune to the overall problems of UK job market (abuse, high taxes, no rights, no ladder).

Moved to the UK 7 years ago. Worked hard, living below my means, and yet I still live paycheck to paycheck. I am a nurse, and I seek to move to the US soon. There are so many things in the UK that I am starting to hate. 1) People's attitudes. People in the UK are very negative and miserable. Whenever I am trying to do something, people here in the UK are always "No, it's too difficult. No, it's impossible. You are wasting your time." But my American friends (who moved to the UK for church missionary reasons) are like "Yes, why not? Go for it!" and they give words of encouragement. British people on the other hand... Where I am from, it's called crab mentality. They don't want to see you succeed. 2) People here are so fake. Americans are honest and straightforward. British people on the other hand... are proud of their "polite" culture, which means they are fake and two faced. I can't stand it. Especially in the NHS, they will say "yes it's okay" then they go behind your back and bad mouth you to everyone. 3) Fake wealth. Many people who live in the UK and flex on social media are fake. I know someone who wears tons of designer, goes on a holiday many times a year, yet had the audacity to borrow £200 from me, then got mad that I did not lend any money. I remember someone who just arrived in the UK saying "Land of the royals? What happened? There is nothing royal about it." 4) The NHS. I work for the NHS. One day, a man high on cocaine from a party was brought in by ambulance. He has been in the ICU 5x. Meaning, his life was saved 5x. Yet he still chose to party and use cocaine. 5x. And he stayed in the ICU for a long time. And who paid for all that? The taxpayers. Meanwhile poor old Dorothy does not get attended to! Why? Because everyone was busy trying to save a man's life, who, after a week, will come back in, again high on cocaine! I feel sorry for the elderly who have worked all their life, paid their dues and taxes, only to be scr3wed over! Don't try to lecture me. "BuT whAt aboUT thE heALth carE sysTem in AmEricA"? You are just proving point number 1 is right. To hell with all of your "oH hoW aboUt the gUn cRime?" You people watch too much CNN. The grass may not be greener on the other side, but I don't care. At least I tried, and have done something to try to better my life. If you want to stay in the UK and glorify it, then so be it. But don't hate on people who move to the US or elsewhere. I guess misery loves company. If you want to stay in the UK, then do. But don't try to discourage people from leaving. The UK is done. It's f0cked, and this is the beginning of the end. Goodbye.

I agree 100% especially about Americans being more encouraging and supportive. If the people in the UK were nicer and more genuine, I could just about grin & bear the high cost of living. The thing im seeing is that we spend the majority of our time working our butts off for money that gets taxed, the country is so expensive that the money we earn doesn’t even stretch that far, we gotta live frugally like poor people just to keep our head above water and if you do want to enjoy the fruits of your labour when you do become successful, you gotta be careful with the high crime in london which is slowly spreading to the rest of the Uk. Crabs in a barrel mindset, very rat racey, everyone is running around fighting for scraps.

France and UK are small countries can’t be cambered with the US a large country ,,, it’s unfair to compare but the US isn’t perfect either ,,, I was in California the best place to live in the US after few months i wanted to leave the US and never returned for more then 11 years , the reason Europe is declining low birth rate ( when life was boring and people lived in villages and small towns they had more children social pressure but after modernization not just Europe but the world is also declining in birth rate people don’t have time and have children in the 3o or 40 s ,,, the world has changed competition is regional and global thus unions are decreasing and living standards are under pressure .

You should have stayed a sufficient amount of time to get “settled status “.. then you could be legally outside the U.K. for up to 5 years .. per the Withdrawal Agreement. I don’t blame you for wanting to move … I’m a U.K. national in the EU but I’ll make sure I get my permanent residency ( equivalent of settled status ) to maximise my flexibility and allow me to be legally .. never mind in practice , for up to or either over 5 years.

I did that mistake 🥲 I left London 1 year before I could switch to settle status because my employer didn’t want to continue the employment and it was after covid so I wasn’t sure how the job market would be and I was tired of being in a flat share so I moved back to Sweden. Now 3 years later I still have pre settle status which will expire February 2025 but I might get the extension for 2 years but they might also cancel it later on so will be a bit of a struggle to move back. I miss London and the UK because here in Sweden people have moved on and are not really keen to hangout 😂 like my friends in London.

Your generalisation about Brits just being interested in going to the pub and getting drunk is unfair on the rest of us and kind of ignorant to be honest. Did you conveniently forget all the artistic outputs from the UK over the decades (especially in music)? The city is packed with interesting cultural stuff (concerts, galleries, museums and other events). I know we have a problem with football hooligan types and drunkards, but they are not the majority. So, please don't generalise Brits as crass and uneducated. Second, if I am not mistaken you judged living conditions in London on living in King's Cross, which is basically a rough area (transport hub). Why not comment on nice districts like Hampstead, Belsize Park, Notting Hill, Holland Park, Richmond and Greenwich? Pretty sure even Paris doesn't have as many nice neighbourhoods as London does. And yes, I am not forgetting London has some very bad neighbourhoods as well, like Lewisham etc. Don't forget the UK is an ex-super power. Standards *used* to be high. The city is built around Victorian infrastructure. Since manufacturing has gone to Asian countries, what do you expect? Most of Western Europe suffers from the same problem, and mass migration just puts pressure on an impoverished/weakened system that can't keep up. Blame politicians.
