I met Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters on Friday, October 1, 1976. I was 11 years old (almost 12) at the time. My uncle and I arrived at CBS Television City, and we were walking towards the line for The Carol Burnett Show with our tickets, and my uncle said, “There’s Bernadette Peters”. We approached, and I had my autograph book, and asked her for an autograph. “You’re so cute”, she said, as she signed in my book. Needless to say, I was in love with her forever after that. Next, we walked and got in line for The Carol Burnett Show. Next, I saw Jack Albertson walking by. I ran over to him and asked him for an autograph. “Sure”, he said, “I’d be glad to. Can you help me carry my briefcase” he asked, as I grabbed it and walked with him to his car. We got to a Mercedes Benz, and he opened the trunk, I placed it in, and he slammed the trunk shut. I gave him my pen and he signed his autograph. I was happy, because I used to watch “Chico and the Man” a few years back. I got back in line, and finally we were seated for what I believe was a 6:30pm taping (I still have one unused ticket from that night somewhere). Anyway, Roddy McDowell was the guest. I had decided that if anyone asked me how old I was, I was going to say “14”, because the ticket said you had to be 14 to get in. I wanted to ask Carol a question, but I wanted it to be a good one, so that I would possibly be on TV. I had heard that she had a special coming on CBS with Beverly Sills, but I didn’t know much about it. I decided to ask her about it. So, when the band played the theme song, Carol walked out and announced the regular stars and the guest, and she began asking the audience for questions. This segment took longer than what you saw on TV. Lots of people were raising their hands, and she would point and call on someone. After raising my hand a few times, she pointed at me, and I looked behind me, thinking she was calling on someone else, but she was actually calling on me. “Yes. YES!”. “What specials do you have coming on CBS this year?”, I asked. “Aren’t you cute? You sound just like a plant”, she said. I didn’t get it at the time. “Your so adorable. What’s your name?” “David”, I said. “And who asked you to ask me that? Nobody? You just thought of it yourself?” I shook my head yes. “How old are you?”. I was prepared to lie to a page or an usher, but I could not lie to Carol Burnett! “Eleven”, I said. “Eleven? Your supposed to be 14 to get in here, but since…” She smiled. “Don’t worry, David. By the time we finish tonight, you’ll be 14. It’ll all go fast”. Next, she told me about the special which was coming on Thanksgiving night. You can see this on the latest DVD’s of The Carol Burnett Show, Season 10 with Roddy McDowell. After the audience questions were over, I asked a page if I could get Carol’s autograph in my autograph book and my sister Lisa’s autograph book, and a lady sitting near told me that she was Carol Burnett’s agent and that she would make sure that my books were signed. A page took the books, along with a letter that I had written, to backstage. The books came back autographed. “To David, xoxoxox Carol Burnett”. It was a great night! The show was amazing. The first skit featured Mrs. Wiggins and Mr. Tudball. Anyway, about a week later, I got a letter with Carol Burnett Show stationery. Carol had written me! It was a nice letter, in response to my offer for her to have one of my dogs, and advising her that I wanted to become an Actor. She was encouraging, and gave great advice! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I had a magical time that day! I have gone to see Carol at 3 venues since then (once as a student at UCLA in 1987, once at a show in Beverly Hills and once at the Kodak Theater), and I wanted to say something to her, but I kinda chickened out. I will definitely say “hi” at my next opportunity!!!!

Bernadette is awesome in everything she does and is stunning for her age but boy was she unprepared for the interview. It’s as if they kidnapped her, brought her to an abandoned warehouse, removed the blindfold and asked her about Carol Burnett.

Funny she did not mention all her appearances over the years on Carol's show... In a way, Carol discovered her to be honest..

Carol Burnett is a top-notch performer, but I think Bernadette Peters would have been A-OK even if she hadn't appeared on the "Carol Burnett Show." She won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical at age 20. From 1969 onward, she regularly appeared on television, with Bing Crosby, Ed Sullivan, Bea Arthur, Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton, Tony Curtis, and the Muppets, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. That said, Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters surely had good chemistry together as persons and performers, given the many times they collaborated together for television and film projects.

Obviously people don’t know much about Bernadette Peters. She got her start way before the Carol Burnett Show on stage and in movies.

She did seem at an odd loss for what to say. I never understood why BP was not a HUGER star. She is great.
