Claire, I wanted to express my gratitude for your incredible content on books. As I embarked on a year-long health journey, I realized that while I had achieved physical accomplishments, I had neglected exercising my mind. So I began listening to audiobooks. That's when I stumbled upon your video discussing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I genuinely enjoyed it, and it led me down a rabbit hole of watching more of your inspiring videos. Thanks to you, I found the motivation to start reading. I visited my local Barnes and Noble and picked up a few books. I've just finished my third one and now I'm onto my fourth. With my 28th birthday approaching, I believe this newfound enjoyment for reading is the perfect way to begin another year of life. Your videos have truly been a source of joy for me. The dedication, passion, and effort you put into creating them shines through, and I am immensely grateful for the inspiration you've provided. Thank you for igniting this new hobby. 🖋️

You're comment is so encouraging! Thank you :) I don't know if you have read anything by Ray Bradbury but as a person who likes self improvement it's possible you'll enjoy his characters. He spent 3 days a week for 10 years educating himself in the public library during the war when no one had money for college. He believed strongly in self improvement and that shines through in all of his work. He's every bit the literary stylist Jane Austen is but his topics are more modern. I love Austen and I love Bradbury with equal measure.❤

I will join the chorus of those who very much enjoyed the Other Bennet Sister. I listened to it on audiobook.

I love The Other Bennet Sister! The first part retells P&P, but strictly revolving around Mary - whose portrayal is very psychologically realistic. The bigger part of the book is set after the events of PP, during which Mary both does and doesn't change, in all the ways that make Mary Mary. Hadlow has 🖊 an excellent adaptation, I hope you enjoy it too! (I want to check out her non-fiction work)

Does she marry a curate like Jane Austen wrote in one of her letters? (Kitty married a clerk in her uncle’s, Mr. Phillip’s law business in Meryton.)

I think my favourite side-character has to be Charlotte Lucas. I love her complexity, her shrewdness and her practicality. I love that she knows just what she wants and needs and how to get it and how to manipulate her situation to suit herself perfectly. I wish Jane Austen had written a whole book just about her- she should be a main character!

I always considered Mary as a early victim of self-help books. All she says and does is to show that she herself is what the advise books of the times, like Fordyce’s Sermons, says what a perfect marriageable woman should be. It what her father characterizes her as from the start.

I have just started reading Pride and Prejudice, my first foray into Jane Austen. So far it has been excellent, the wit, observations and irony is spot on.

Haha with some of these questions I was thinking “wait… are we the same person?!” 😂 Though you definitely love Persuasion more than I do! Though there are no bad Jane Austens, just ones you prefer to others!

When I started to read Jonathan Norrel and M. Strange, I immediately summarized it as "It's like Jane Austen wrote about wizards" :) I was really happy when you showed it.

I’m reading Barchester Towers and I was thinking how much Jane would like it. I think she would like the whole series because of the church politics and the fantastic female characters. She would have laughed out loud at the Stanhope family.

I agree, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is the better book of the six books. I scored it 9 out of 10 after I read it last year in 2022 📒 I wonder if Jane Austen would have liked Sylvia Plath’s ‘The Bell Jar’? Look forward to your next video.

The Bell Jar is an interesting one - I don't think she would have been a fan 😅
@catherinepatterson4720
@catherinepatterson4720 10 месяцев назад
@@Claire_Fenby I agree, don’t think Jane would be a fan either of, ‘The Bell Jar’, but I believe she would have read it because the main character, Esther Greenwood, is a writer too. It’s 1953 when Esther wins an internship as a writer on a New York fashion magazine, at the time, when society refuses to take woman’s aspirations seriously. This made me think of Jane Austen, because Jane too grew up in a society who didn’t take women’s aspirations seriously either. I think it’s wonderful how woman today have more freedom to pursue their dreams to write : )
