Are Alden boots overpriced? The answer depends on what you value most. #mouldedshoeny #mouldedshoe #aldenboots #alden #aldenshoes #fiberboard

The insoles are split-grain leather, not leatherboard, so they’re still genuine leather, just not full-grain leather

Right, I learned that later on after.

Nice video as usual. I disagreed with @Roseanvil assessment of the upper leather quality in the Indy boot as well as his metric on leather quality in general, but that's largely subjective. Is it the same upper leather in these boots? One thing Weston revealed about the insole in the Alden Indy boot is that it is split leather (genuine leather), not that it is fiberboard as you stated. It appears the same in your boots. I think the only fiberboard in your boots are the heel stacks since yours don't have midsoles. Also the poron you mentioned in the other shoe is just a footbed liner. If you peel it up you will see it's insole.

@@chalkboardshoes The apparel industry says "genuine leather" when it is from the split part of the hide. Most veg tan has a stiff temper so it should hold up for a while. Heck, it might even mold easier and faster than a full grain insole (like in my AE Park Avenues). If there was fiberboard under it it would impede your foot from impressing the cork anyway. I would think split grain would break and crack faster, but that may be a long while. When Weston took the Indy apart there was no fiberboard. Leather uppers need to have a soft temper. I think your uppers are full grain. Genuine leather (split) uppers are too weak on their own and will tear and become mis-shapened so a synthetic coating is fused into the the surface to give both the strength of the grain layer plus a smooth surface that takes a finish. Unfinished split can be brushed into a cheap suede; in this case a twill textile inner lining with a fuseable interface glue is used for strength.

The insole is the low quality split portion of the hide. It is NOT fibre nor leather board. Though there is an easy solution. Just go to your cobbler and let him cut and put a soft chromexcell insole on top of it or some thinner high quality full grain soft leather. It won’t wear down then and it will be even more comfortable. The midsole and heel stack is leather board.

Yes, I wish I could redo this video, but I did mention it in a later video that I made a mistake. But I like Alden insoles for their feel, so it doesn't bother me.

Haven’t tried Modified, but I have ordered 2 random stock / last call shoes from Moulded. They have always been exceptionally nice.

One gripe here. How did you calculate "inflation" from 2003 to 2022? I can garuntee their labor costs have increased more than the roughly 50% increase you mentioned in that time period. Likewise the cost of the materials, etc. General inflation calculators include things like gas prices, OER, food, etc, that don't apply here.

@@chalkboardshoes Well said. Again I know its not necessarily pertinent to this video. Aldens, while absolutely selling at a premium, still offer a great silhouette with great comfort. I am assuming that if you had the boots rebuilt, you could change the midsole with a full leather midsole, given that they are Goodyear welted. The only thing truly permanent is the upper. At least this is my understanding?

Those leather looks delicious. Like a freshly toasted hot butter bun in a bakery. I will prefer the barrie last as the modified last heels is too small and I always prefer 360 welts over 270s unless its an elegant dress shoes or dress boots. Totally agree with you that the best materials and constructions and all the shoe-boot shebang talks often does not equal to a nice comfortable boot that looks nice and is daily wearable. Some boot talk guys would lean too heavily into super construction boots but most people aren't loggers or fighting a forest fire. Some sartorial shoes guys would lean too heavily into elegance and appearance, but half the time those type of shoes are for people who don't walk much.

I have a pair of Indy’s and yes it bothers me about the fiberboard however they are extremely comfortable.

You probably have so many shoes you'll never even get a re-sole (like me). So yes, it's not a problem.
