I love my X-Carve! I love Inventables!
But the X-carve pro feels like it missed the mark for their current customer base.
I wanted to spend a little time talking about my X-Carve and sharing some thoughts on why I won't be getting a PRO model any time soon.

Thank you! The fold up was born out of necessity but because the best function piece in my little space. If you have more space for a dedicated machine with some floor space there are some killer units suggested in the comments below from other people. Also Inventables purchased TBD CNC and they now have an upgrade package for $500 that has everything i have plus some more. I spent over 1000 and still am going to spend another $200 to upgrade my belts and motors.

Glad I could help! I have a glowforge too! We got the X-carve and it did so well we bought the bullet and sent for the glowforge. They are so different but do really compliment one another well. A lot of projects from off the X-Carve and head into the glowforge. I 100% believe the x-carve is worth every penny if you make repetitive things, or cut odd shapes. I use it for everything. This video was just some of my favorites about it but if you ever have any specific questions feel free to reach out!

Great vid on the X Carve and your upgrades. I am pretty sure you can tile with the X Carve. Also I watched a video of an expanded X Carve to 1800mm. I have an X Carve that I haven't built yet but bought some up grade parts to install when I do. I also have a Gatton CNC that I bought and am building it to hold a half sheet of Ply. Thanks for the comment! Small shop is no joke! I'm getting ready to move and have the opportunity to build a shop which I'm really excited about. I keep watching other guys who work in 1 car garages and their shops are so clean and organized. Mine is 50% scrap pile and 25% " i had to put this over there so I can work over here" haha. Being in CA most of the time the garage is good except in those hot summer days when its over 100 in the garage and the cold months if I need to pour some epoxy. CNC stuff is super cool. for a small shop X-carve is probably the way to go. If you have more floor space their are better options but my fold up table top is what works for me!

I was on the fence about a cnc for a while! Deciding which to get was insane there are so many options. So I got a 3d printer in December 2018 to get my feet wet in a plotting machine type thing.. fast forward to end of 2019 somewhere in the beginning of 2019 I caught the 3d printer bug and December 2019 and 15 3d printers later i went with the X carve because it seemed like the most complete system, and I liked that Inventables actually listens to the users. I'm glad I got it, they make it SO easy to get going and literally jump right and and start rockin, Easel is super easy to use, it was a good choice in my opinion. I was totally going to jump on the pro but eh I'm kinda right there where you are, bit too much $ and there are cheaper routes so I won't be getting one after all. I will be getting a bigger machine with lead screw drive all around and linear rails. Thought I'd chime in since you had me through the entire video. Cheers and happy carving ✌

Then I went to the Inventables website and I don't see them offered there either. I would really like to get them as I've also replaced the original X axis with the better one found on Gen 2 X-Carves, have a new Z axis similar to yours and I also have the 2" riser end plates. Do you know of any other supplier for those?

Props for speaking the truth. The price is outrageous! I have an avid CNC 4x8 and it ran me around $14k I think and it’s superior in every way to the x-carve. I hope they decide to keep doing promos because I truly believe that once that $12k price takes off they won’t be selling anymore.

Thanks for the honest feedback as a guy that bought one, versus being given one. I tried to read through the comments before asking this question but didn’t see anything in the video or in the comments. Which version of Easel do you run?
@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
There really is only one version but Easel Pro gives you the ability to save custom bit sizes as well as change the cut fill directions. I do use Easel Pro and I question it all the time. But I do use different bits and normally change the fill direction to match the grain as much as possible. I found it to be a smoother cut will less sanding in the end! Other than those two things I don't think there is any difference. Or at least if there is I don't know what they are! I would run it with the free easel and if you run into a headache or want the ability to save some settings then by all means upgrade! I've downgraded and upgrade a few times :-)

This was legit! Exactly what I needed. I recently inherited a handful of woodworking tools and have decided to go all in and become a woodworker. I'm in the process of building a 12x16 woodshop in my backyard and decided that I would treat myself to one pricier tool so I can hit the ground running and decided on a CNC machine. Although I'm a newbie, I'm fairly techie (Illustrator, SketchUp, etc.) so ramping up shouldn't be too hard. So now it's all about finding the most robust, yet cost-effective option. I was sort of leaning towards the Maker Made M2 at around $1000, but this might be worth the added investment. Although it won't do as large of pieces, seems like it will be more accurate with better detail. If I'm off-base with any of that, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Jody yes! I’m so excited for you! I think you’re right on! If you know illustrator and sketch up you’re there! The best stage of learning will be bits but that involves some trial and error. Hey, just came across your video on the X carve pro. It was very timely as I am looking at purchasing an x carve. Also, your upgrades are the most succinct I have seen. Would you be willing to share how are you price out work that you do as piece of work. That is, someone asks you to cut some shapes from of a piece of material. Not a full blown build: plaque, build a table, or something like that. Even if not specific per piece/hour dollar amount, how are you price that differently than a project. I regret I haven’t had time to go through all of the comments on your videos. You might have answered this before. Looking forward to enjoying your channel.
@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment! pricing out piece work is something I'm not he best at honestly. The guys on the Made for Profit podcast have an excel sheet they sell I'm to to buy to help me out. I normally have a base rate in my head, meaning how much I want to make per day the project takes me. I also know that I'm not Ikea prices and I'm not able to price things as high as a full time shop would. I think it comes down to what I need to make per day that the project is going to take me and then I can divide it out from there based on the pieces. I make some little photo holders and charged $6 a piece because I was making 200 of them. Once I get it set up I knew I could knock them out real quick and then most of time was spend in the laser where I'm hands off since the machine does all the work. So a formula would be somewhere in the Day Rate x Days Divided by Pieces. Also thanks for the compliment on the X-Carve!
@ashemha
@ashemha 3 года назад
@@DoThingsMakeStuff thanks for the reply. Im probably looking at more like 10 pieces. I like the day rate calculation. I had forgotten to consider that approach. I will look into the spreadsheet as well.

Thank you for your comments. I too felt the NEW X-Carve is over priced. I'd order the Chinese 1212 Blue Elephant before the new X-Carve. It is $2000 plus shipping is another $3500 to a port closest to my house and even then I'd need to either pick it up myself or have it trucked here. Still beats $12,000 big time. Hey Man, figured I'd chime in here with some added info: the Easel software is built to work for the x-carve CNC and, as of now, the x-carve is still actually based off an open-source firmware called GRBL. This means that you can use Easel to control any other CNC machine that uses the GRBL firmware. For example, my company produces a CNC called the LongMill that is very similar to the x-carve but addresses all the issues you bring up in this video: supporting the Y-axes, adding more clearance, screw driven on each axis. Our CNC and many others can be controlled using Easel the same as you would an x-carve. Just thought I'd mention it since it seems from your other comments that you believe easel can only be used if you have an x-controller 👍
@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
Thank you for that! My knowledge of how the processing and movement aren't super deep. So those other machines come with their own controllers, then? As long as you update the machine's code to the proper steps per inch, etcetera etcetera, then the Easel software will work. Sorry, I don't know who you are, but I'm curious what machines you have or produce since you said "our CNC." Would love to add move machines and info to the discussion since the CNC4Newbies has really been the main one recommended by others!
@TheUsernamechris
@TheUsernamechris 3 года назад
@@DoThingsMakeStuff Yeah exactly, the other CNCs have their own controllers and if they're set up to work for GRBL firmware then Easel will work, just as using a more advanced software will work if you use the GRBL post-processor for those programs. My name's Chris and my company is Sienci Labs (sienci.com/) and you could check out our LongMill machine design there. Me and my co-founder started 5 years ago with the aim of continuing to advance the quality and functionality of CNC machines available to the hobby market - at the time the only big options were the X-carve and Shapeoko and we felt those designs could be improved upon. I think the CNC4Newbie options are also pretty great, it really depends on who you are and what you're looking for :)

I build guitars and I've been doing inlay work on a small CNC for a while. I'm about to upgrade to a machine that will do bodies and necks and after a year of hemming and hawing over the Shapoeko vs X-Carve I was thrilled when they came out with the Pro - until I saw the price. One thing I'm not sure you mentioned was that by pricing this thing over 10 grand they have gone WAY over machines that are superior in quality and features - Machines like Laguna and Shopcraft have CNCs that have auto bit changers and 4x8 capacity and full tables etc...for like 7-8 grand. And that doesn't include buying used industrial stuff. The reality is that even a pro-level shop could spend 8-9 grand and have a far superior machine. So for someone like me who actually builds guitars for a living (wife has a really good job!) I would never spend 12 grand on a machine when I could spend 5 and get all the same features. To me, the entry-level machines top out at about 3 grand. After that, you start getting into some real quality stuff like Axiom. Just my thoughts.

@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
So the computer processing power to run Gcode is super super minimal. I really thought about using something like micro computer but then you need a screen so a tablet makes sense for my set up that folds up and down. If I had a permanent set up I would maybe do something slightly different, but same idea. Minimum requirements are windows 10 or higher. Needs a USB port. This is the one I have - amzn.to/3gucL2A It only has 32gigs of storage which isn't enough. I don't keep anything at all on the computer but updates alone have fulled up the memory so I had to go in and delete stock software that I never use. Today I would purchase this - amzn.to/39SVNd7 Little larger screen, double the memory. I also have a wireless mouse and keyboard which go in a drawer that are really helpful

@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад

Thanx - learned a lot. But I have a basic question... can the X-carve cut out individual pieces (eg. the drawer fronts for a toolbox) or does it only carve? I want to be able to make accurate & reproducible parts to later hand assemble and join. Could you let me know? Appreciated.
@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
Yes absolutely, I would say that is its simplest function. Thats where you can jump on to a 1/4" bit and crank the feed rates up a bit as long as you have the stiffeners. I'm going to do another video this week that shows me using the X-carve doing some basic cutting that may answer some questions for you!

Totally realized that, I talked about it in the video and showed them somewhere. I’ll go scrub it and look when it was. I purchased them from TBD customs and what they do is add strength and support to the Y axis on both sides. When you start moving a little quicker the machine can vibrate causing a rougher cut on the edge. These tighten that right up and would be easier Installed from the start.

@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
Hey! Yes there are some aftermarket companies adding laser capabilities. J Tech Photonics makes one for the x-carve. The biggest issue would be safely removing the toxic fumes from laser engraving. You would need so really great smoke extraction to safely use it. I have a glowforge and love that they are separate machines but 100% wish my laser was bigger like the x-carve. So that kinda answers and hopefully points you in some good directions!

Oh my goodness yes! I just looked it up and yup. yup yup thats probably what I would get. But.... you would have to learn to use a program that Generates G-Code like V-Carve Pro or Fusion 360. A good chunk of what Inventables is selling is access to Easel, software and firmware updates and ease of use. So that is a major factor. X-Carve and Easel is turn key and anyone can do it. With the CNC4Newbies you have to learn software and be much more of a student of the CNC process.

Your vid popped up in my feed, and having a Pro I was curious as to your thoughts. It is an expensive machine, but I will note its still not full priced during the presale. It's not as steep of a discount as it was initially but still a bargain at just over $7k for the 4x4. That's a ton of money, I get that, but like your OG x-carve it will pay for itself if you used it to do so. You stated the Pro is 25% faster, and that's way off the mark. Its more like 400 to 600% faster based on the job. That speed and ability to do those 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" passes is the reason why its a game changer imo. Even for a hobbyist or someone who isn't a full production shop like me. What it means is during your normal wood shop workflow it presents opportunities for quick iteration that wasn't previously there bc the OG x-carve would've taken too long to make it useful. Cutting templates, routing c channel grooves, building cabinets and drawers, and the list goes on. The precision of the Pro is off the charts as well. I am sponsored by Inventables but I will only work with companies I truly believe in. Its really amazing, and by far the most useful tool in my shop.
@DoThingsMakeStuff
@DoThingsMakeStuff 3 года назад
Hey thanks for chiming in man! The 25x not 25% was off of their advertising and emailing with their team. My assumption was that 25x was the peak on some really specific movement. They mentioned cutting 3/4" depth with a 1/4" bit which is super impressive. Right now I can cut 1/8" with my upgrades but the feed rate is around 45 in/m so its hard to compare not knowing their advertised feed rates. My video assessment was more geared toward their full advertised retail price of 12K but still 7k feels light. I think there is a major software piece of that price and that I do understand. Easel is so simple to use and accessible for anyone to jump in with no knowledge and make killer stuff! Don't get me wrong I would love to have one. When I move into a bigger shop and my needs increase it will be a conversation my wife and I have again. Assuming 38% off is their new retail price... which I hope it is. Thanks for the watch and comment!

Just going to throw this out there... my understanding is you're not buying the pro because you've already upgraded your older x carve to mimic the new pro, plus they'll be sending you the tile feature to try on yours, plus you have a friend with a huge CNC if you need it. So, me personally, I don't have an old x carve that I've updated like you have, I don't have the tile feature being sent to me for free, and I don't have a friend with a huge 10x10 CNC. I've never had one before and I want to make 1 purchase and get the best I can, so I went ahead and bought the pre order X Carve Pro. Just my 2 cents!
@DoThingsMakeStuff

For sure! If I was starting from scratch I would do the same thing! The tile feature them made it seems like everyone would be getting at some point and as others have said it's available if you use other software than easel. I had no experience with CNC or 3D printing before getting one of these and realized pretty quickly that they are simply to operate. I would make sure there is no slop with the wheels but those are adjustable also. If you're up for something besides an X-carve there are some really great options people have written about in the comment sections. Just know the X-Carve is a basic introductory CNC machine. With patience and some learning it can do really amazing things!!!!

They’ve literally made up a number, pretend to cross it out and “give you a deal” this tactic has been used for years a d it’s one that works. The most basic form of marketing.
