I've been using Nalgene water bottles for about three decades +/-. The original bottles were made from HDPE and are extremely lightweight and durable. One of their cons is they suffer from long term oxidation effects of the plastic and become very brittle after 8-10 +/- years. They just start cracking and especially after suffering a drop. The Lexan con is weight, they are considerably heavier, but are indestructible. I've had one about 15 + years and is in the exact same condition as the day I bought it. For long distance backpacking the HDPE is a logical choice due to less than half the weight of Lexan, but the the Lexan offers an unsurpassed utilitarian aspect, which is it's ability to take boiling water with zero deformation of the bottle. The HDPE bottles will deform. The benefits of being able to take boiling water are 1. You can hard boil water in your pan and pour it directly into the water bottle, in order to have safe potable water. 2. You can boil water for a hot beverages... coffee, tea, hot chocolate ect... 3.You can place boiled water in the Lexan water bottle completely full as a method to warm yourself up in your sleeping bag. Which can be a luxury, or if by necessity to combat hypothermia. These are my thoughts and experiences with Nalgene. If only one water bottle for backpacking, take a Nalgene. I froget to mention that some of the canister water purification systems have female threads in order to directly attach the Nalgene bottle, which makes it much easier to pump and retrieve water from sometimes precarious stances stream side. Another excellent way to utilize the Nalgene water bottle to one's benefit is to wrap duct tape around it 15-25 times. Especially on long distance hikes where blisters are inevitable, as duct tape is the best way to use as a preemptive for likely hot spots, or after the fact blisters have formed.
Some of the new ones are made out of 50% recycled materials, so it also helps cut back on the amount of petroleum being used for their bottles. More eco friendly.
No, more like if you have to mix something in water. What comes to mind is when we made one of those cheesecakes with the pudding filling and we had to shake up the filling in a bottle. I know that isn't really technically cooking, but anything where you need to mix water with powdered milk or powdered eggs.
