Why I love the Roland System-8

2020 is my year to become a bigger presence in the synth community, starting with this scattered look at what is ultimately my favorite synth-- The Roland System-8 Plug-Out Synthesizer.
Unscripted and unfocused (as always) it's a journey to the center of the synth, with touched-on topics like CV/Gate control, input effects, the many filter options, and MORE!
I'm going to try and do more of these vids if there is good response, so let me know what you'd like to get out of these 'Tuna-torials' and I'll put it on the list!

Great video - the System8 is without question my fav synth to play... initially when Roland released it I was unimpressed, but then when I went in store and actually got my hands on one it was an instant sell... took it home there and then ! Such a flexibile synth, fun to play and with great sonic capability... it's so easy to recreate my old Juno60 patches, and they sound absolutely perfect! Best Regards, Axel.

I must have been smoking crack the day I put the System 8 up for sale. Yes, when I compare the original 1980s patches there is no serious difference, including filter sweeps ... but the S8 is much more hands on for sound design, when I look at the full size Jupiter X... it’s basically the same controls as the Xm just bigger or with sliders. Edit : and no sequencer.

@@andysw3 I really really want to love that JPX, and im going to go in with a good attitude but I am skeptical it will even come close to replacing my system-8 (or even my JP80) for what its trying to do. Still pretty excited at the concept of all those layers and voices though.

Mr Tuna is by far the best delivered and most informative synth tech videos on the web. I bought a JD-XA abd a System 8 early on after they were released. It’s funny to see how These two synthesizers are holding their own on eBay prices after all these years. There was a lot of negativity about the JD and the system eight and now people are looking at them and realizing how wrong they were. My JD is basically a 4 voice analog. I never use the digital engine. Somehow the system eight manages to emulate analog oscillators and filters in a way the JD never can. I would give anything if Roland would make an eight voice or even better yet a 12 or a 16 voice fully analog JD. The isolators on the JD are some of the best I know of and filter number three, which sounds a little bit like somethings wrong, helps me come up with some of the coolest sounds I’ve ever made on a synth. And now with the new functions, the system eight is just an exceptional synth and Mr Tuna loved it from the very beginning. Smartee pants

A lot of content I have watched regarding the system 8 has not exactly been negative but I feel it has been cast in this luke warm category of flagship synths. Your perspective was refreshing and seemed utilitarian in seeing what it can do well. I’m no pro keyboardist so aftertouch is an afterthought. 1 LFO is confusing but when you went over the filters I was like when I see this synth around 1k imma pull that trigger. Thanks for the great vid!

Glad to see another system-8 lover! It's the first synth I've owned that I truly fell in love with - it will have to be pried from my cold dead hands! Maximal up front controls for just about everything, wide sonic spectrum - both from the system-8 engine and the classic modelled plugouts. My only real wish is that it had a slightly better/firmer keyboard response.

Love the System 8 - it's a very underrated synth. Bought the System 8 and then sold my classic Juno 106 because I was tired of replacing parts and didn't want to have to worry about the eventual maintenance. The System 8's Juno 106 plugout sounded spot-on accurate when put side to side with my own Juno. So glad I got it! If I had *ANY* complaint, it's that the Jupiter 8 plugout doesn't have the Jupiter 8's classic "random" arp feature, which is a glaring omission IMHO.

Hello Mr Tuna, (sorry my reply did not enter) I have not yet found a definitive solution but, it is already something. Roland Clound offers a month's trial of all its VSTs, including System 8. I downloaded it, and I noticed that the entire memory banks can be loaded, both for VST and for System 8 hardware. This is not a solution, as I said, but for now it is the best I have found, even if it lasts only a month.

Mr Tuna - and everyone....... I am thinking of controlling just the keyboard with a Nektar Impact LX88+ My experience with using other controllers to control synths (JDXi, MicroKORG) has been that I lose some tone somewhere, hard to explain it. For some reason the Nektar seems to have more output than my older boards. Did you have satisfactory results using a sys 8 with a secondary board for the keybed? Best to all, stay healthy

Yes. Those bright green LEDs are a bit too obnoxious. I initially got a System-1 and loved how it sounded, then added a System-1m because it interfaces really well with the whole world of EuroRack synths and modules. I eventually picked up the System-8 because of many options like the full sized keys and added polyphony (System-1/1m are only 4 note polyphonic). The fact that Roland added 3 of their signature synths as Plug-outs totally sweetened the deal. Getting a System-8, along with a Jupiter-8, Juno-106 and. JX-3P as well, with the ability to stack any two of these 4 instrument engines, is awesome! I still do wish that Roland added the LEDs as not just green but allowed you to select any color you want (like we can in a Roland TR-8S). I also wish we could adjust the brightness of the bright green LEDs. The System-8 is far cooler and slicker than most folks might guess, by just looking at it. I love my System-8! Thank you for this AWESOME video about what the System-8 is capable of doing! You touch on some very cool features that most people do not, and show us how to use these additional features! Excellent job!

Luke I do know about being able to dim the bright green LEDs, and yes, it is cool that one of my favorite artists Jean-Michel Jarre has been using the Roland System-8 for many years, and it does look cool on stage and in his videos. But it is not my personal favorite colors. I have grown used to the bright green since I do have the System-8, System-1, several System-1m units and the MX-1 and TR-8s. But it would be even better to be able to dial up whatever color we might prefer like blue, cyan, violet, lavender, yellow or even orange. :). I am still curious if there is a third party that can replace all the green LEDs on the System-8 or System-1/1m synths with LEDs that can be programmed to any color.

They load onto the System-8. When you start turning knobs thats when you get that crunchy solid state + acb analog viiiiiibe. All you do is go into menu, remove a plug-out, then import a plug-out. By defgault it comes with the Jupiter-8, the Juno-106 and 3XP. Im waiting for them to release newer synths. You can also find patches for free on the ARIA website, you just boot up the system-8 and click on a sound and load it. It's a massive amount of fun and easy to use. I just got mine 3 weeks ago. If you play mostly presets though, this probably isn't for you unless you're looking for the 80s patches in the 3 included. Most of the presets for system-8 are merely stepping stones.

seeing as you asked what 'tuna-torials' we'd like to see - I'd like to see one/some on the music theory side. Now, there's obviously heaps of shit out there like 'what is the c minor scale', so not that. But perhaps some thoughts on how YOU go about composition. Like, your thought process on picking chord progressions, you fave style progressions, maybe even a vid just on how you got your theory knowledge and what you do, if anything to maintain it (and your ability to play keys). Like, do you actually even consciously practice scales etc. Or do YOU just literally 'feel it' now? And what is actually going on in YOUR head when you are playing/writing? Are you actually thinking 'I'm going to c-minor second inversion after this', or 'I'm gonna add a suspended chord here for tension', OR do you think less theory and just move to practiced 'shapes' with your hands, OR whatever.

Do you still have that? I’m thinking I’ll buy the vst for 130.00. Happen to use an A49 keyboard. The system 1, though I could appreciate the microkorg when I had it, the sound of the sys1 knocked me out. If they would have just made the filter knob bigger/smoother as it is a smooth filter, no stepping, but that small knob was to sensitive on the sys1. But I’m sure the 8 is nice. Roland did prove they could put the love/magic of analog into a digital world. So they nailed it for it’s own thing. Blurs the line in digital and analog tones so well as sounding so analog, like a crusty old basement lurking gem you dug up.

Just over 18 months later, can you provide an update? How are you liking the System 8 after having and using it for some time? Best features for you? Dislikes or any issues? Bottom line, if you had it to do over again would you or would you purchase a different synth?

The system-8 is still one of my 'keep-forever' synths. I like sound designing on it much much better than the jupiter-x and its much more in depth for modulation capabilities. the build quality is a litttttle light, but putting on the aluminum side panels solved that pretty much entirely for me. the keyboard is definitely a little low quality than some top-tier rolands like the JP80 or JPX but the sound is just too good to lose. I wish it had aftertouch, I would like 61 keys.... but other than that--- its perfect. what a machine. best emulation available anywhere for Juno-106

@@MRTUNA That's good to hear! For straight out playability and not so much sound design how does it compare to the Jupiter XM? I like features on both. Might be buying one soon. Can't decide which one. Or do I go with a Sequential Rev2-8 voice? So many decisions.

In your opinion, do you like the System-8 or the Prophet 6 Better ?

Would love to see you create FM patches and compare them to a DX.

Do you have an old SH-201 by any chance? Would love to know how to get more out of the S8’s (cheap and cheerful) VA ancestor

Richard Sexton I used to! I really love the 303 sounds it had. The filter really had a good scream to it. If another one comes by at a good price I’m gonna grab it just to do some comparisons across the Roland VA history.

MR TUNA Music I’ve got two of them so I can lend you one and I live in YVR too. Hit me up whenever you wanna borrow it! Do you have the Jupiter Xm now?

Richard Sexton I don’t have the XM but I’m planning on getting the X when it’s available. I’ll definitely keep you in mind for that SH! Thanks for the offer my friend

Great review! I love mine but what really pisses me off is since the V1.3 update my old version System 8 patches will not load anymore via PC. Roland essentially broke the patch editor and will not fix it! You also cannot roll it back. This is only a problem between the System 8 V1.3 synth, PC VST patch editor and not the plugouts though. If I had a Mac the patch editor would work with V1.3 (according to forum posts). PC users beware.

Yeah it definitely has never been a problem with mine, but I'm a Mac nerd so there has to be some advantages! Im really interested to see how the Jupiter X will compare to this. I'm going to be doing some in depth side-by-sides when I get mine. Thanks for watching

I have a question, im thinking of buying a good polyphonic synthesizer around 1000 euro. Which of the following is the best of them. system 8, deepmind12 or Kingkorg. Please let me know.

Had all three- the System8 is the only one I wanted to keep! Sounds amazing, excellent UI, digital features are 10/10. Didnt like the sound of the DM, didnt like the layout of the Korg

Hello Mr Tuna, I also purchased a System8, but I can't load an entire sound bank at one time. I can only load one sound at a time. Can you tell me how to do it? Thank you.

Hello Mr Tuna, I have not yet found a definitive solution but, it is already something. Roland Clound offers a month's trial of all its VSTs, including System 8. I downloaded it, and I noticed that the entire memory banks can be loaded, both for VST and for System 8 hardware. This is not a solution, as I said, but for now it is the best I have found, even if it lasts only a month.

Can it produce sounds like digital piano? If so, can you share presets?

You should take LSD one time and bond with the synth. You'd be much more in tune and much more comfortable on camera. And a bigger smile. :) That being said, you made me click buy now on a System-8. Namaste.

Does it come with a built in effects section? Like Juno Chorus and some reverb or delay?
