I think like a lot of people I went through life not feeling miserable but rather mildly dissatisfied. I tried to plug that feeling with all the usual suggestions, love, religion, Greek philosophy, studies, mindfulness, travelling, and hobbies, but that feeling just never went away. Then I read David Benatar's "The Human Predicament" and it powerfully aligned with my experience of the world. It's been hard to accept because I did want to have children, it makes finding a life partner much more difficult, and it is a fairly grave worldview to live under, but I can't help but believe it. Although, it does have its benefits too -- I'm a more compassionate person now, I've been a vegan for two years, I donate more to charity, I've become more socialist in my politics, and I'm much more forgiving of my own and others' suffering too.

I didn’t become AN until my twin sister mentioned how messed up it is to gamble with the child’s life. We were around 19 years old. We would get into various philosophical discussions from a very young age but it took a little while for us to think about AN. If I’m honest, I didn’t think poorly about procreation prior to this discussion. But I do recall getting very annoyed hearing about children severely suffering and people willfully forcing kids to live in squalor. Didn’t support it. I know now I would feel extremely guilty if I brought a kid here, period.

The argument that I find compelling the most about antinatalism is the risk factor. Every time you create a life, there is a risk that this life would be not worth living. I'm not claiming that every life is not worth living. But I am saying that there is a significant chance that this life that you created will turn out to be not worth living. And this is immoral, especially that no one is asking to be born in the first place. One last comment: by a life that is "not worth living" I mean a life that ends with suicide, or the person wishing he/she was not born in the first place.

I recently started watching your videos and I completely agree with you. We never know how our kids will fair in this world and they're guaranteed to experience death. Some die horrifically like a few of my relatives. One of my paternal uncles died last year after dealing with a serious disability that ruined his mind and made him bedridden for many decades. I was RELIEVED when I found out he finally passed away from pneumonia. I also had another paternal uncle who was brutally murdered by a total stranger in his home several decades ago and my paternal great grandfather on my father's mother's side who was also murdered because he won after gambling. My father experienced some crazy stuff on and off although he luckily was able to get through those experiences and become a computer programmer but had a difficult couple of marriages and a few disabled kids. He know is 78 with end stage prostate cancer, obvious parkinson's that his dad seemed to have too and high blood pressure. He's the shell of his former self and is mainly bedridden. He needs help with a bedpan but at least he is still able to use his smart phone and laptop. It's sad and frightening to say the least that this is the end of his life. Plus with my own health issues involving a probable rare genetic disorder. I won't elaborate but I'll just say this disorder has caused a lot* of problems for me over the past 42 years, plus PTSD from some of my own past experiences and no* unfortunately I'm afraid of opting out even with all that I've experienced. I wish I was not afraid but that's how that goes. So these are obviously many of the reasons I believe in antinatalism but even if I and my family were healthy, I would hope I would still see how there are no gaurantees for my future offspring plus death is inevitable. EDIT: I needed to add that I live in the good old U.S. so I can't afford normal health care and had some* bad experiences using the free clinic. I'll also add other bad things have happened to other relatives and family but it's too long to list and it would seem made up so I won't bother. Thank you very much for the videos!

Why are you talking about not being alive as if it's a state of existence, when it's literally the opposite of the sort. You are living in the most prosperous time in human history so far and the fact that you can read, write and type of an electronic device, means that you already have it far better than many others. And instead of trying to change the world for the better or just enjoy your fleeting but unique and wonderous existence as a human, you choose to hate living. What an ungrateful, nihilist buffoon you people are. You can't even comprehend that you gain absolutely nothing by ending yourself and anything you ever were and are
@josephsego1095

@@potatoman6556 there seems to be a misunderstanding. There was absolutely nothing in the comment about suicidality, or nihilism. Antinatalism is centered around realism. And antinatalism does not mean that life isn't worth living, or that there isn't all manner of beautiful, pleasurable, and even spiritual things about the human experience . But had I not been born, would I have missed out on anything pleasurable?? No. But would I have missed out on suffering? Yes✅. This is the asymmetry that Benatar talks about. Realistically, there are Many , Many, Many, Many, Many , Many narcissists. Narcissistic personality disorder is truly an epeddic. There's landlording, there's the blatant exploitation of the means of production ( capitalism), there's betreyal, there's etc. Etc. Etc. Etc. Even in your comment, you weren't able to communicate without insulting antinatalists.... A lot of human beings struggle with sane communication that doesn't center around manipulation and/or trying to insult someone else.. so Not that people couldn't evolve past that. They could.

For our ancestors, a predator could show up at any moment. Bad news has ALWAYS been taken more seriously than good news. It's a built-in logical fallacy. As humans evolved, the typical best of "good news" was just like "oh we found a tasty berry bush" and therefore nowhere near as relevant as the worst of bad news. All I see here is someone whos brain has taken this to the extreme. Apparently, suffering is the only outcome of bringing a life into this world, and joy is irrelevant? Happiness is nonexistent to you? Or if it does, it's almost just like, morally outweighed by the mere presence of suffering in the world?

That feeling of wishing to have never been, how common would you say it is around you? Because in the end I think it's the root question : how many people regret being alive? If its very common then I would say it is absolutely valid to be an antinatalist.
@LawrenceAnton
@LawrenceAnton Год назад
Hmm I don’t think it is very common because I don’t think this is a question people reflect on - let alone reflect on with any clarity. I don’t think whether people regret being alive is the root question, because those who would go on to enjoy life are not wronged by simply never being created.
@ps5622
@ps5622 Год назад
@@LawrenceAnton yeah I think you're right about that, people don't often reflect on these questions. You're also right about the 'not being wronged' part I don't see not being born as a bad thing, just a neutral one. What I was trying to say is that from the perspective of someone who dosen't regret being alive, I'm quite glad that my parents weren't antinatalists, I feel like I'm in a better situation that if I had never been born (I've got a good situation instead of a neutral one). So it seems to me that in my case, my parents were not doing something immoral by creating me (you might say they took a risky bet but it was a sucessful one in the end). Therefore, if my situation is fairly common, which I'm guessing it is, then being a natalist is not necessarily a bad thing I would say. I could be wrong about the proportion of people who don't regret being alive of course.

I myself find this ride we call life a drag sometimes I must admit and thoughts of cashing out have visited me on various occasions, but they remained just transitory thoughts for the reason you have stated yourself- we are here, so we might enjoy it as well. The answers to your unborn child who is complaining about the hand he has been dealt could be one of these: 1. The non-existence is coming and is 100% guaranteed, it’s just the question of time, so just be and watch the end approaching. 2. There is no “you” in the most proper sense. What you call “I” is life expressing itself through you and all you do is to link past with the future. 3. There are two categories of matter, inanimate and animate. You are the later. If you reject your duty to live and pass it on, you will only change form from one to the other, but there will still be you. 4. When you choose to create life you choose to change the composition of matter which already exists, it’s like burning wood instead of leaving it to rot. Either action will only chance it’s form, but it will still “be” there. 5. Living is nothing else but the experience of another force of nature. All the troubles and tribulations will come and go, and no one will remember of them. Only life itself will remain, and you can choose to be part of it, because not being already is if you don’t choose otherwise.

This is just birth nihilism. It feels bankrupt of any form consistent ethical foundation until such a set of ethics can be used to denounce creating someone. It's either 'there is no point' when it comes down to reasons to make someone exist or 'what if they suffer overall' when it comes to reasons they shouldn't and not a single moment of nuance. If we did the most fundamental thing and just decided that suffering is boo and pleasure is yay we already run into an overwhelming amount of reasons why sentient beings would be subjectively justified to create more sentient beings directly or indirectly.

But I aknowledge that arguably a majority of people alive today cannot say that (not sure if I agree). I think the biggest question is about the future: 100 billion people have ever existed, how likely is it that another 100B - 1T+ in the future have better lives that are more easily justifiable?

From a different point of view - most of the Near Death Experiencers (myself included) strongly resist returning to a 3D existence/their bodies; most want to stay in the non-physical realm. The majority are only convinced to return to their lives out of a sense of responsibility to others who depend on them; I've never heard anyone say they so loved being in material existence that they couldn't wait to get back to it. There are also reports of being forced back, unwilling & unhappy. The teachings seem to imply that certain lessons can only be learned in the 3D, via suffering. So then, Antinatalism would appear to be the ultimate rebellion against the Higher Powers. The great Trogoegoautocrat that feeds on pain. . . . ? One can only wonder!

It's all very simple, but life is absurd and most humans would with a straight face deny the light of the sun as we say in my language which is Dutch (I am from the Flemish part of Belgium). I have mostly the same reasons as you for my antinatalism. Had a vasectomy 9 years ago, best 50€ I ever spent. Most of my friends are childfree, but then there are the optimists who still want to breed. One is a single mother who is now pregnant, she is a psychologist with no partner, 40 years old already. She works with children with mental and physical disabilities. I almost fell off my chair when I heard she got herself impregnated...other friends too are thinking about it. One couple, the girl is very ambitious but always tired and wanting to work less. Her man is a doctor so has been carving open dead bodies and been dealing with the misery of people in every stage of life basically his whole adult life. I try to reason with these people but it's like talking to a concrete wall. Don't know what more to say to them....

God The Father has problems, people are denying and rejecting His spiritual advances, and yearns for relationships with people. The Holy Spirit has problems, people are choosing to obey demons instead of Him, people hate goodness and sinless behaviour so much that they consistently reject the Holy Spirit and His guidance and justice for mankind. if even god has problems we can imagine what a normal man like you and me go through daily. The point of the story is it doesnt matter about problems, what matters is communion, relationships and bonds with have with others. Most importantly with God Himself.

It is about inheritance of lands, a kingdom back in the day. It is that we entered in to this ongoing event in the throws of a cry for Free-dom that has created our plight. Your argument is valid, but see the duality: we're between Mars(War/Wrath/red) and Venus(Sex/Lust/blue) in the Womb of Mother Nature and evil is on the march that creates a godless world, a dog star (Sirius), dog being god reversed, us being wrath/lust in the flesh - mind over matter. Why it is needed to stay evil through virtue, but that battle was lost long ago. We have become consumers, literally, and it's the loosening of chains that creates this desire to breed/fight because we are literally dogs in the flesh, canine (wolves), and the accuser is building his army while plundering the resources of this place we were put within to have dominion over/protect. The war now is for your mind, corona (mind), and for your loss of inheritance (Matthew 6) - the Bible - Testament - Last Will and Testament. So no bringing life here isn't bad if it's to have them inherit the earth (promised land), but that it is overtaken by the forces of evil it has become that. But you can't lose sight of the fact that you are in the flame still, quite literally (light a match) and you still have to concern yourself with your ancestors who are trying to guide you (unseen) and realize we still represent them - why the accuser tries to break ties with the past (as myth) and push everyone to focus on "the future" and marching straight ahead into oblivion - postmodern minds. You are in a war whether you want to be or not.
