Yo fellas/girls! Quick heads up to anyone thinking of trying out the app: don't (yet)😄. We'll have a sale around Black Friday so you're better off waiting for that. Enjoy the video and lemme know if you have any bulk related questions in the comment. Let's converse 🤙😁
Any cardio plans throughout this? Seems unlikely during a dedicated bulk-type effort, but also keeping the heart healthy as you get older seems like a very JD thing to do. Low key healthy, and you don't exactly have to be Nick fucking Bare about it. Thank you for sharing! This is motivating!
Personal anecdote: I made the recomp of my life just now from 39 to (scary) 40. Lost 100 pounds of fat and gained a good amount of solid a$$ muscle. Went from turbo-obese to visible abs. And you were a big part in the success of that journey! Test decline due to age is way, way overrated. Feel like 25 tbh. Life style is a lot more important. A LOT. Long story short: good luck on the bulk, you can do it! 33 is no age, especially natty
If you live and eat healthy, avoiding alcochol, sugar and drugs your test will peak when you are 40 and i belive you could maintain a good amout of it till your 60. Great job tho
@@BagietkaYTofficall Honestly, sometimes it does feel like it. What I can say is that how good your sleep and recovery is as a factor a lot more important than age. Will see how it is with 60. I think the overrating of age comes from the pros on gear. But even then: Coleman won his last Olympia with 40 and Arnie looked great for T3 at 54. Natty you can rock well into your 70s as Manoar Aich had proven and he died at over 100. One of the worst things I ever believed was 10 years ago with 29/30 that it's too late - which was totally wrong. Now I just need to get proper shredded 😎
obviously eating in a calorie defecit but out of curiousity, did you do much hard cardio or just generally start moving more (walks / incline treadmill etc). I need to shift about 35pounds and im at a similar age to you and just feel like im getting fatter week on week
@@Andy01223 One of the biggest mistakes is to overrate cardio. Resistance training for muscle retention and diet for weight loss. Cardio is a bonus. If you are obese 30% bf+ go for a walk 30-60 min. Overweight: cycling/swimming, jogging only at 20% or below. Frequency depends on your job: from 0 times If you are a construction worker, to 4-6 times If you are a couch potato. Also choose cardio by enjoyment and sustainability. Weigh and log everything you eat, figure out your tdee, weigh yourself daily, lose 1-2 pounds/1% of bw per week. It will get harder the leaner you get. Body also needs diet breaks after large Chuncks of weight loss: 10 to 20kg steps to settle at new homeostasis. Felt drained at 118kg in January at 30ish percent, now too fat at 98kg and 20% with abs flexed.
@@Andy01223 One good tip is to just increase your physical movement during your daily activities. Get a step tracker watch or an app on your phone and see what your normal amount is, then try to increase it. 2k steps (or 1 mile) is usually about 100 cals burned for an average person. That way you don't have to dedicate a lot of time specifically to do cardio, can burn more calories while being productive, and can eat a little more. In my experience doing that so far I've lost 14lbs in 6 weeks. My maintenance normally is ~2100 but since I do 10k steps (mostly daily activity but sometimes dedicated walks) everyday my maintenance is ~2500-2600ish. I eat 1500-1600 every day and drop 2ish lbs per week. Hope that helped!
I just turned 40. Have been doing weightlifting seriously for about 2 years now, my second anniversary being this past April. I'm now in the best shape of my life. My back is insane! I'm even getting a v-taper! I've long seen this type of back in magazines. But now I see it in my mirror! It always amazes me that I was able to do that. I should've done it sooner, honestly. ANYWAY...this is a long way of saying--wanting to bulk at 33 is not taboo. I wanna do it now and I'm about 5 months away from 41. Never done it before. Now that I have my diet in good working order, I wanna see what types of muscle gain I get by getting a little tubby with healthy macros. And then slimming down in the spring. Wish me luck!
I'm 60 and have been on a cut for 10 months and am down to 16% BF and can see my abs. After I lose a few more more lbs, I'm starting a lean bulk 😂. It's never too late!😅
You got this. Stoked to learn along with you Ps. I think I speak for all of us when I say that your natty bulk progress wouldn’t make for a boring watch. We’d be on board for updates
keep the grind my guy!! its because of people like you that I actually cant stop grinding and love it!! at my 60's its a life goal to still have a 6 packs and great shape. Take care
I'm 42, never've been better. In terms of bodybuilding experience is key. I'ven been into sports since I was a child (swimming, traithlon, football etc) and lifting weighs since 2011. It's true I'm not thinking about bulking -cutting because wouldn't be a smart move having a 6 years old daqughter, sleeping 6 hour max etc..not the best ingridients to hace a bulking sicces hahahaha but I stay in good shape and that's enough
Hey Joe, I'm on 8th week of your program and I've never been so happy with the results of any program i have tried before!, 💪 Full body training split was really what my body was looking for!
Joe, similar demographics as you, turning 33 soon and have been consistently training 5x a week for about 15 years. I generally hang out at 10% BF at 165lbs. decided to commit to a bulk. I am currently in the timeframe right now where I haven’t gained a “significant“ amount of weight (about 9 pounds) but it’s made a significant impact on the way I look. my abs are considerably faded. this is a very tough mental roadblock to overcome. you are adding some strength at the gym, and feel better mentally with increased calories, but the feeling of looking “out of shape” is very difficult to overcome. I will push through, and will cap myself at a total gain of 15lbs. I command you do the same. my 32 years old reasoning for “getting bigger” was a slight calorie maintenance increase.
the abs disappearing is hard. I have my lines but a little pouch on my lowers now but my strength has greatly improved and I feel great I've been slowly adding calories to my diet. I know I can cut but bulking was A LOT harder mentally for me. Especially when I started because I just ate anything I wanted to my detriment of course.
Dude, I'm looking forward to my first bulk at age 52! Been cutting for a year solid, lost 20kg. Now 5kg going back on with heavy training to try and build muscle. Late to the party!
I found the identical text and became concerned that a) my photoshop job was too good and b) people would then think I edited the other conversation too 😂
Whoa, dude, your muscles are seriously impressive! It's clear you've been putting in the sweat and grind at the gym. Keep crushing those workouts and motivating the rest of us💪💯
Thank u for your content sir, i'm 52 years old and bulking for the last time to get a few Kg on my body before going for life on maintainence. GOOD LUCK JOE.
I started lifting 3 years ago. Got some great results from re-comping and cutting for a while, then just resorted to maintenance. Did another cut earlier this year. Looked great. That said, in the 3 years I have lifted I never once did a proper bulk. I regret not doing it sooner. So, I started my first legit bulk a month ago. I'm looking pretty thick already. Gained 6 pounds. I figured my newbie gains are long gone. Good luck, mate.
I feel like recomping is your body rewarding you for allowing it to achieve homeostasis. Everytime I've been in this window of calories in/out I saw very slow but very definite improvements in my physique
2 years ago, overweiught, 25% body fat, may be more. Borderline type 2 diabetes, knee joint problems, overall, extremely poor state. Now, aged 51, after combining daily gym work with daily walks (long, brisk ones), I am fitter than I have been in a long time; with a better physique than when I was in the very early 20s and was working out. Harder work as energy levels aren't the same, but at the same time; have increased energy levels by this regime. And sleep is better also. Thanks for the vids. Lots alwasy to think about and learn from. Keep them coming.
New subscriber. Been binging the vids. Feel like this is the channel I need. No fluff like some of the others. Motivated me to get back on the horse, and properly this time. Determined to make it count. Cheers fella.
I tried my first bulk after an injury at age 37. I took a rib punch at boxing that popped my lung and was advised to stop exercise until healed, leaving me a weak little sausage. I pushed my calories up but ate very well, and focused on hypertrophy. I actually failed to put on any weight but my body composition seriously improved, went back to boxing, got fit, lung popped again
Just came across your channel - great content, my friend. Take it from an older guy - the words "bulk" and "cut" have some psychological effects that you've explained pretty well here. Though someone might call what I did last year a "bulk" - I always think about it as "eating with purpose." Whether that's a small surplus with carefully balanced protein and fat (like you're doing now), or a mild deficit with the components needed to retain as much muscle as possible - you're ALWAYS "eating with purpose". Best of luck with this next "building" phase for your physique!
Every time I watch one of this guy videos ... every time ... like every single time ... I ask myself, how in the fricking world Joe doesn't have at least 2 millions subscribers and an average of at least 7 to 1 million views every single video ? Man love your content keep it up 💪
Probably because sensationalism and clickbait sells and Joe is just keeping it real. Don't know if people still say 'keeping it real' but you get my point.
I think a lot of people get too hung up on their age and think - am I too old for this? For me - I smoked cigarettes from the age of about 14 to the age of 34, then to try to reverse some of that damage started cycling in my late 30s. I lost excess weight at that time plus was eventually able to ride 200+km days through the mountains by my early 40's, as well as commuting 50ks per day to and from work. I've now been hitting the gym since last November (age 49) and have cut about 10kgs of body fat and defined what muscle I had to start with. I'm now about to embark on a bulk for the next 6 months, followed by another cut with the aim of being bigger and better by my 50th birthday. I can honestly say I am way fitter and healthier now that I ever was in my 20's. So don't get too hung up about being "too old" for something in your 30s, it's just a number. I'm looking forward to what results you get from this latest bulk you're on.
Love the treating a bulk like a cut mentality. Currently trimming down to pre-bulk BF but do have some concern about the flood gates opening and moving 1 step forward, 2 steps back with the aesthetics. My only ever bulk was years ago in my teens and I didn’t understand any of this shit. Think for me keeping track is the only way to stay reliable, for now.
We agree with your decision! Years of routine training and diet can get you far but not so far because it gets you in a circle. Even if you try really hard every session, it is within the limit you set yourself.
I would recommend splitting the extra cals between carbs & fats, there seems to be a unique response for building muscles where carbs seem to influence gh & provide another pathway for growth, feel free to check out the studies.

This is brilliant! I’m doing the same thing you are as a 34 year old myself. I’ve seen enough science saying anything above .8 Grams per pound is optimal for protein that on a lean bulk I’d rather have additional carbs or fats!
Dude you became a dad?? Had no idea. Congrats, Joe! I'm 29 and a father of four. Fatherhood stretches a man, but I've never been happier. Hope you find the same to be true.
Hey Joe. Greetings from Germany. Your vids are always so refreshing. Mainly because they are structured so different and the „pokerface humor“. Have you already dealt with a lot of critic regarding your ESN sponsorship? The brand polarizes the fitness community a bit. It is basically team „ESN is the best“ versus „overprized and overmarketed“ (a bit like Apple). Cheers, looking forward to your results as a fellow 30 plus ex-athlete!
Incredible video! Great work. 2:33 So good to see you do this exercise as I recently added these to my program and to see it has your seal of approval is quite awesome to know. Front foot elevated Bulgarian split squat is an amazing exercise. It does wonders for my quads and glutes with the super deep stretch at the bottom and great stimulus to fatigue ratio and I love to use it as light variation to complement my main squatting movement. 💪👍🙏
Your best physical form is going to be whatever is easiest to maintain. For the reality of most people, they will never be able to maintain abs or leaness. I myself am not the norm but i accept other people's decisions to make lifestyle choices.
