Yess girl same here went into nursing because I always knew I wanted to serve others/nurture . I learned I really value my health after working on the floor ha! Also my Saturn return I learned to accept my spirituality that I had suppressed ..be more myself and i love sharing it with my patients which lead me into exploring reiki and eventually changing careers to social work I'd like to incorporate spirituality/ mental health and natural remedies I do believe mental health has a strong correlation to health issues .. ✨
OH I love this - I also am a nurse who loves natural health & helping others. I was considering a Life Coaching course, but now contemplating Social Work as it may be easier to find work in the area. I am not real keen on a UNI degree though! How have you found it & do you have work ?
I just applied to Columbia’s MSW program and I’m excited I know I want to get my PhD in clinical psychology. I did Sociology during undergrad loved it wanted to do therapy and MSW was overall the better way to go to reach my PhD bc I didn’t do research during undergrad. Hopefully I get in and I love this program so I can get licensed and also do my PhD
@@goddess2859 yup! We actually just started classes. Honestly I’m already feeling the pressure bc of the field placement! I’m working with a population that’s really emotionally taxing so I’ll have to emotionally regulate while keeping up with school and work 😬 but so far the professors seem really understanding

I am an MSW I didn't get licensed because I am pursuing a PsyD . For me it seems like they are pushing LMSW's out and LCSW's are becoming more prevalent . It didn't make sense to have to wait 2-3 years after LMSW to get more hours for LCSW when you need 1 yr internship-2000 hours for a PsyD . So I am completing my PsyD program in 2 years and I am more than halfway done.
@simran yes of course you can, just make sure you have some relevant life experience dealing with difficult situations or at least some relevant work/voluntary experience. All the best x
Thank you so much for making this video! I am currently looking at various MSW programs and intend to start this year. My goal is to become a therapist too and what lead me to this decision was for very similar reasons you stated for yourself (incorporating a more spiritual/holistic approach, helping others with mental health concern)! . When looking at MSW programs, should I be paying attention to specific classes that part of the curriculum that would be beneficial for me to be a therapist?

I'm still deciding whether to go the MFT route or MSW route. What were the factors that helped you rule out the MFT programs?
Hi Christine! I think there are two parts to my answer to this question - one is that I knew I wanted to focus on individual therapy (as opposed to working with families or couples), so I really didn't consider the MFT route. However, while I still don't know much about that training, I don't think MFTs are limited to families and couples. The second part is it seems that in the area I live there simply aren't many MFTs. Many therapists in my area are social workers and there seem to be more programs available for this path. However, it may be a perfect fit for you, depending on your goals. I hope that's helpful! Wow I relate to this so much! I really want to be a therapist but I also want to incorporate the spiritual. Both faith and mindfulness and meditation. I live in Ohio and am looking at OSU master in counseling and their MSW. Good to know about Michigan! Is there an online option?
I did a bachelor's in psychology and then a masters in social work, many people go that route! I don't know much about working in schools with children with a MSW, but if you reached out to specific MSW programs, they may be able to answer your questions about those kinds of jobs

After high school I went to college and got my BA in psychology. If you're interested in eventually getting a MSW, most people hold a bachelors degree in psychology, social work, or other related fields. I hope that helps!

You will get so many job opportunities with a Masters, it will boost you up in a higher standing for jobs. Thank you so much Courtney. I have similar background to you. I have a master's degree in Social Sciences, and was thinking of pursuing a PhD, but I have always felt not right abt it since working with scientific approach doesnt embrace my spirituality and creativity orientation. I tried to come up with research topics that integrate spirituality and holistic consciousness, but again the analysis and arguing parts of the research just never feel right for me. I took training in somatic therapy and coaching last 1.5 years, and found my great passion and gift for working with people one-on-one. However, these are not considered professional and as you said, there are ethical issues with them, esp when the clients have mental health issues. I have just looked into different MSW programs these past few days, and just wondered yesterday if there is anybody with passion in spirituality working as a social worker, and I found your video now :D It is great to know that I am not alone in this!
I have the same interests!!! I currently attend the California institute of integral studies which is a holistic integral institution that you’ll probably really like. I’m applying there for graduate school for this particular reason, I am not interested in the indoctrinated eurocentricism path science has taking. Positivism is too rigid and I value indigenous ways of knowing.

No, it's not. Most social work jobs will require a masters in social work, and some will even require a bachelors in social work. Most social workers do not have a PhD
Thanks for sharing! I too did psych undergrad and was considering the Clinical Psych MA/PhD route but I know that I love the one on one with people more than the research. The more I research, I see MSW may be the way to go.

I’m currently an undergrad student this is my junior year. I have been really considering to go to grad school for a MSW but I’m afraid of what concentration to make. I’d like to find a career path with DCF/family therapist or something involved with criminal justice. What do you recommend I should do more research on?
Hi Alexandra! Each MSW program offers slightly different concentrations, so it will depend on which schools you are looking at. Depending on your program, you could possibly learn about family therapy and how to work in criminal justice, meaning you may be able to pursue both interests. If you want to choose between your two interests, try to find people who are already doing those jobs and see if you can email them some questions or set up a phone call to learn more about what they do. This may help you get a better idea of whether or not you want to do the type of work they are doing. I have thought and pondered and looked at ways to help others in the mental emotional spiritual physical realm not as a nurse but as a therapist coach cheerleader mentor. And also how to invoke change on the political law level. I want to help change endangered populations and oppressed populations. I want to fill people's toolboxes with hope and encouragement and help them to see that anything is possible and that it's ok to talk about mental health.

Hi Seta! Currently, I have classes/work on coursework ~9am-5pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, then my internship 9-5 W-Fri, and I often have coursework Saturdays and Sundays. If you're homeschooling, I recommend checking out part-time programs, which often offer flexible class times including nights and weekends. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Your path to finding social work and mine are fairly similar! I also wanted to be a life-coach, but I want to work within that deep, emotional level to really effect change (I also didn't want to do all that sales work!). I am currently on disability for mental health, but I'm stepping out on faith and I applied to my local community college to start the process. I love mental health (I write most of my songs about it, and most of my videos are about them too), so this is perfect for me. And social work (as opposed to psychology) helps to understand the individual INSIDE of their environment, circumstances, socio-economic standing, etc.

I really appreciate you going over the different routes that you can take to become a therapist. I'm curious what made you interested into going into therapy, your concerns about becoming a therapist, and going over the credits that you need to do after grad school in order to get an LCSW. Also, how did you know to take the plunge into becoming a therapist and getting a masters in social work? I know that sounds simple, but I have so much hesitation making a large decision with the fear that it will be the wrong one later on. Love your content and excited to see more from you!

I'm 20 years old, and I just transferred from a CC to Bowie state university. I'm currently a psych major. I’ve always wanted to become a therapist or counselor, and now I'm starting to think about social work. I also have a lot of compassion and empathy and want to help others. I may want to work for CPS. I will be receiving my bachelor's degree late, like at 22 or 23 years old. I'm now thinking of changing my major to social work, but I'm also thinking of sociology. I did hear, depending on where you live, some places will offer you a job in social work if you have a degree in any behavioral science, and others strictly want you to have a degree in social work. I love the social worker career because I know there are numerous work settings like a hospital, mental health clinics, nursing homes, schools, prisons, military bases. I'm also having a hard time finding an MSW program that is in my state (Maryland).
I’m a junior in the undergrad social work program. I do want to go right away for my MSW! I’m stuck between mental health and addictions or health. Those are two concentrations my school offers.
I studied BSc political science in Nigeria and I want to study Masters in Social Work in either Australia or Germany. I have an admiration for Australia too. My GPA is 3.04 on a 5 scale (Second class lower division). Will I be eligible for the Masters program in Social Work at German or Australia universities?

Wondering, did you ever consider a PsyD? I was in the same boat, trying to wrap my head around applying for the clinical psych PhD that has a 13% acceptance rate, and eventually I strayed away. I did consider the doctorate level which doesn't include research... but I have a bachelors in social work so I ended up deciding to stick with it and pursue my masters in social work and decide if I want the PhD down the road.
Hi Samantha! I briefly considered a PsyD but ultimately realized I could meet my goals in a shorter period of time with the MSW. Good point, there's always the option to go back!
My experience is similar to yours as I enjoy the spiritual and more holistic side to mental health and struggle to find a program that I can resonate with. It's important that I enjoy what I am studying. I will be choosing my MA program in the coming months. I am wondering why you didn't consider the "Licensed Professional Counselor" or the "LPC" license here in TX, route?

If you've held a few jobs, explain how what you learned from one job lead you to the next job, and articulate how all of your experiences ultimately contributed to where you are now. Good luck!
Hi Vintz! Although I'm not very familiar with school social work, I do think certain programs offer specialties in this area. It all depends on the specific program, but an MSW offers a lot of career flexibility, so I think it's worth looking into more!
Hi Faycial, there is a lot of variation depending on the individual class and professor. It's hard to say how hard they grade on papers, but something I started doing in undergrad was finishing a paper early, sending it to my professor for feedback, then making the changes they suggest. My classes had a mix of several small papers, and some only had one or two larger papers or projects. That will also change based on the program you're in, so I can really only speak to my experience.

Hi Aria! I would say no, you don't necessarily need experience working in those fields before applying. Many people go straight into the program after finishing their bachelor's degree :)

Most of psychology is nonsense but the trauma piece and connecting people with repressed emotions is the core spiritual work. Psychology doesn’t realize it but everything is spiritual path. You have to have a self before you can dissolve it. Putting peoples self concept back together is the first part of the spiritual path. I May follow your path (I’m a life coach now but would like to tackle tougher issues)☺️ but I always remember what osho said, that psychology is brain damage to the seeker. If you reduce humans to a bunch of diagnostics, then you yourself have dissociated and there is no coming back. He warned me that a psych degree would damage me in the end. We must keep our hearts open and use just enough head knowledge to guide things but never make the mind the master or forget that life is a mystical experience to be experienced and not a problem to solve 🙏
