I am currently a life coach and always been nervous about providing therapy but this year I finally got my LMSW and want to find my niche within counseling. I am very solution-focused so maybe something around that or substance abuse. Thank you for this video!

As a therapist, I strongly encourage anyone truly wanting to help people to go the life coaching route. If you like labeling and pathologizing people, have at therapy. For all therapists, get ready for burnout and compassion fatigue. Would not recommend it to anyone.

Thank you so much for this video, this was exactly what I was looking for and you were so informative and covered all the main points! I've always been interested in life coaching and recently I've realized I've also been drawn to helping others suffering with loneliness/mental health/family issues/self-empowerment etc., and that all seems to fall under the umbrella of therapy more since all of the issues are so varied. I love the idea of having my own business and the freedom that comes with that, and for myself I'm thinking that I could really use the community-building, extra time for self-healing/self-discovery/self-learning, more knowledge and hands-on life experience + supervision that comes with the process of getting a grad degree and working out there in the real world first. I feel that would be a positive challenge for my personal growth as an individual and help me develop my own confidence further - which leads me to how I am leaving room for life coaching down the path, wherever the journey will take me, when I feel called to a specific niche. Because right now I know I'm most passionate about overall health and wellness, but I'm like a jack of all trades, I'm interested in psychology, self-development and spirituality/holistic healing! So I can't narrow down an exact issue right now to commit to the business-building aspect of it. Also my own self-care and self-healing is a huge priority since I was super burnt out before my undergrad even finished. I'm looking into applying for a MSW program now - I think my biggest fear and resistance I always had towards working with people in this regard is that I won't be strong enough to handle the emotional labour and difficulty of it because I'm an empathic person and absorb people's emotions (this will cloud my logical reasoning sometimes as I place myself so strongly into someone's shoes that I feel their emotions super strongly). Do you have any advice or thoughts on this? Also, may I ask what your niche in your own life coaching business is right now and do you intend to continue with working in organizations or start a private practice when you graduate?
@CourtneySchroder
@CourtneySchroder 3 года назад
Hello! I can definitely relate to you in having several different interests, you may want to check out my video on why I decided to pursue a MSW if you haven't already because I discuss some of these things a bit more there too. I can also understand your concerns around empathy, and if you want to work with people, my advice would be to not let it stop you. Creating emotional boundaries for yourself, working with supervisors, and increasing your self care will all help with that, and it's good to be aware of it now (as you are) so you can be prepared to work on this. When you have your own practice, you can also choose who you want to work with, and you may choose not to work with a specific population if you're finding it's just too much or too intense for you. I'm currently not active in my coaching practice (due to grad school and just branching out my interests) and when I graduate I will have to get my licensure hours, so I will be working under another social worker somewhere just not sure where yet :) let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello, Courtney! It’s great to find a like minded person on RU-vid! I’m in the very beginning of my journey, I’d love to help people and I’m thinking of getting coaching certification but I’m afraid it might not be enough. I’m afraid I won’t be able to help as many people as if I were to become a therapist+ coach. I’m also an immigrant & Im 25, it’s scary to begin this long process of becoming psychologist in US at my age. I would appreciate any advice. Good luck to you!

Hi Courtney! Thanks so much for making this video! The information was very helpful. As you’ve posted this video 3 years ago are you still answering comments here? Hi! In the video you mentioned that there may be a way where you can study clinical psychology for free. I wanted to ask how / where that might be? I'm an aspiring psychology student / future therapist and am having a hard time finding options within my budget! I live in califronia but also happy to go abroad if there are cheaper options there
@CourtneySchroder
@CourtneySchroder 7 месяцев назад
Hi! Can you give me a time stamp from the video and I can further clarify for you? I'm most likely referring to many clinical psychology PhDs being funded. I have a podcast episode on my channel that talks about PhDs more in depth if you're interested as well. To my knowledge the only way to study psychology at an undergraduate level for free would be with scholarships.

If I wanted to help women who struggled with binge/emotional eating would coaching or therapy be the right route? I’ve struggled myself, I have found that feeling my emotions and inner child work to be incredibly beneficial. Are these things I could teach as a life coach?
@CourtneySchroder
@CourtneySchroder Год назад
Hi Rachael, it depends on the context you want to help/teach in. I know many people who share personal experiences online and what they learned from going through something. Personal experience is a great teacher. If you were going to work with people one-on-one, I would recommend going the therapy route for a number of ethical reasons. You may likely also find that people seeking help for binge/emotional eating will be more likely to seek out therapy than coaching (due to amount of training, the fact that insurance can cover it, and so on), so if you want to have a career centered around helping people in this way, that would be my advice :)
@rachaelcone8083

This has been on my mind for so many years. Here I am again, thinking about going back to school to become a therapist and doing online research. I came across your video (again) and was rewatching it. Came to the comments and saw that I had asked a question but didn’t see your reply. It’s a moment of realization that there is probably a big reason why something inside me is nudging me in this direction…and if I don’t listen I’ll probably be right back here over and over and over again. Also, your advice that you gave me is so very helpful and is mirroring what I was thinking. Thank you! I will be watching a lot more of your videos

Hi Gabriel, when I did it, it was a bit under $10k. I'm not sure what the prices are now (that was about 5 years ago). Pricing is important and I appreciate when people/companies are transparent about it, so I hope that's helpful.
