Great little video. I’ve been a social worker now for 19yrs. Started out in child protection. Moved into LAC & Adoption work, Youth Offending. And now for the last 14yrs in CAMHS. I’ve always wanted to work with troubled/traumatised/unwell kids. I’m also a trainee family / systemic psychotherapist. But have done CBT, DBT & EMDR too. You’re right. The vicarious trauma were exposed to can be exhausting. Good self-care and regular use of clinical and managerial supervision is vitally important.

I’ve been a social worker since 2009 and I have to change the population that I work with every couple of years. Not only to save myself from burn out but to keep the work that I do fresh to me. I feel that I can work with a lot of populations so I like to give and use my gifts to almost all populations. Im working in hospice now.

This is so true. Social work is a really challenging profession especially coming from a different cultural background. I work as a case manager in disability sector and it's draining and i'm at the point of considering changing career. Social work is not for everyone.

This is very helpful honestly , everyone telling you to go for social work. I keep saying , it’s what God wants for me that I would follow.

it hit hard when you are an ardent follower of Christ and at the same time a social worker. recently i had a situation whereby my client was asking for abortion. i only advised her to see a physician for that purpose

Hi Chioma! You touched upon a very important topic and I’m so glad you did it. These are all the things that I asked myself before starting my Masters in social work. I was quite skeptical if I would be able to overcome these challenges in my practice because I come from a background where I have seen people I love suffer from such issues and I have personally also suffered and have trauma. But I’m glad I’m doing social work. I might not be able to overcome those challenges every single time and that’s okay, but I’m gonna keep trying. Love your content Keep going!

Hi Chioma, I recently subscribed to your channel and I'm glad i found you. Every thing you said here hits home for me, I've volunteered with Marginalized population and like you said it's gonna conflict with a lot of things a person believes in. I've been able to detach myself from taking the work home and I have to confess it's not always easy. I look forward to being a licensed medical social worker someday.

I’ve realized as a social worker that most of the frameworks, polices, and regulations we have to work within, often can’t contain everything we carry. A lot of social workers start off wanting to really help people then get discouraged by the limitations and red tape we have to sift through. (How much more our clients/patients though.)

Thank you for sharing your open perspective.I think when we are being challenged with different values and ethics is also an opportunity to look within and also question our own values and perhaps what we perceived as normal as children can be actually seen as abuse in other parts of the world.

Another helpful video Chioma! Thank you for talking about the challenges you've faced being a social worker, it takes a lot of self awareness and critically thinking through your experiences, values and beliefs. I feel like now that I have been studying/being on placement, it solidified the idea that social work is something I would want to do and see myself doing in the future. Of course there are aspects of it that might be less exciting such as admin tasks, but they are part of the job and are equally as important as the direct clinical work, so I dont mind it. :) Understanding and looking out for the signs of burnout are so important, I noticed my quality of sleep was declining and had to adjust my self care to avoid anything further. what are your favourite self care tips Chioma?😊

Vic DHHS offered me a job in 2019 but a family bereavement, then COVID and Lockdowns prevented me from migrating at that time. I’m thinking of reapplying now 🤔 Which part of Australia do you work in? Have been following your channel for a while now because Im thinking of start studying social work too next year. I love how you share your experience particularly in the domestic violence /trauma field. I wonder however on how do most social worker work on dealing with a case because it seems like we are the only one who are involved with the whole process as you mentioned it (reporting, admin task, court hearing etc). How does the team / group support from peers manifest in the job? I was thinking that being the one solely responsible for the case is what makes the job overwhelming at times.

This is why I have also looked at non clinical roles in Social Work. Would anyone know if there are many opportunities in Australia in terms of non clinical side of Social Work?
