I’m considering it for a practical reason: my wife is expecting in a few months, and I think time my gaming time on the living room tv is about to drop considerably. Can’t be waking little man up with gurgles and explosions, that’s his job.
@@beach_boy1141 I do have a headset, but the TV/living room is right between the master bedroom and what will be the nursery. My wife will literally wake up to the sounds of controller buttons being pushed.
@robertgarvansnyder4665 I doubt your gonna have time to hardly play even a handheld my guy. I'm a father of a 3 year old. Gaming took a MASSIVE decline since my sons come along. I doubt you'll have the energy to even bother powering the handheld on. Trust me you'll question yourself thinking can I even be arsed playing a game. Having said all that I've still bought the playstation portal.
I don’t understand the haters saying stuff like “it’s a complete waste of money you can already do it with a backbone or controller + tablet”, it’s like going to a Rolls Royce dealership and calling people idiots because they could’ve bought a used Camry for $3000.
Yeah I mean it’s NOT going to be for everyone but the use cases are still there; Speaking personally I imagine it’ll be pretty convenient to swing through the city in Spider-Man 2 before bed for a bit :)
Honestly with remote play the only two big issues is input latency and screen tearing. If those are polished up with the portal, I would definitely consider getting the portal especially since I’m not always home so having something on the go and not moving my setup is a major plus
@@MorrisseyMuse for those who can't afford this device they might have an old android laying around and with the app they can do exactly what the PlayStation portal does
You're a game reviewer, why wouldn't you get it. For the average person though it's an absolute waste of time and resources as SONY has already stated that it will not work with all games, I mean not even bluetooth headphones lol. For you as our reviewer it's awesome give us material to mock and tease. :)
Another pro perspective in favor of the playstation portal would be: Yes you can buy Steamdeck or a ROG Ally. But you have to make compromises considering weight, performance, battery life and cooling of the device. I mean I get it, its cool to run the games natively on a device, because you don't have to rely on a Wifi connection. But for how long will it be possible to play the latest triple A games on the current generation of PC handhelds with acceptable compromises? Looking at starfield the steam deck is being pusht beyond its limits. And if you run those type of games you have a really hot running system where the battery is dying pretty quick. And there is no trend that this will be fixed in the next two to four years. So for me the playstation portal is a better approach since I don't have to worry if a current gen Game will run on my PS5 and also I will get a decent amount of playtime out of the device without it getting warm to the touch. Especially at nighttime it is a blessing to have a cool and quite system while lying in bed next to your significant other (I'm looking at you Steamdeck #fanNoise).
Oh good point! Likes yes you CAN achieve similar results on PC or another device, but with a bespoke design meant for this one function I imagine the Portal will perform quite well! And you're right, until a big leap in portal hardware there's probably a limit to how long AAA games can keep getting crammed into devices that run them natively.
I look forward to your review and thoughts on it when you get yours, :) I am hopeful it will be a success but we shall see, such a shame it has no Micro SD card slot :/
Actually just sold my Steam Deck and pre-ordered this. Loved the deck for what it was but honestly would prefer direct and quick (no nonsense) connection to my core PS5 games in-progress when the TV is occupied, when i’m traveling or at our vaca home where I don’t have another console
Damn no way I would sell my steam deck. Got a batocera plug and play SD from a seller on Etsy for simple emulation. Streaming big titles from my pc was the other big feature as well as xpass.
You made several good points, many of them are the reason why I pre-ordered too. But you missed my main one: 8 inch almost borderless is gonna be spectacular! ❤️
I preordered mine as well. The ONLY concern I have is definitely stick drift… Hall effect sticks would have been ideal but they should be fine. I play the hell out of my ps5 since I got it and my controllers are fine.
I agree $150 would have been the sweet spot with it's limited uses, but that was never gonna happen a with an 8" touch screen. I don't personally have a PS5 but my son does, and he's mentioned it would be cool to play throughout the house. But he also knows there are better options as this pretty much serves "ONE" very specific use, and not much else. That being said, I would expect these to be on discount pretty soon after launch, so that $150 may happen sooner, rather than latter for those who are willing to wait.
These will sell out and be Sony’s 2ns best selling PS5 accessory. Their number 1 selling accessory for PS5 is also $200 and it’s a modular controller. It’s still selling great and price has not lower. I doubt this and what it’s designed for will be less than $200. You’re also right there are other options out there but all were made with Xbox cloud gaming in mind non were made specifically for PlayStation. That’s why they all have the Xbox button layout. This will have all the fictional elements of the dual sense controller and that’s something no one but Sony can do.
@@wendelllawson3320 the duel sense edge controller is a controller thats is similiar to the xbox elite controllers of course it would sell well, The play station portable is a useless tablet that serves one purpose only plus with no blue tooth at all which is a mistake since blue tooth is now the standard and i suspected the portable will go on a nice sell months after being out.
I’m looking forward to your review. I think I am in a perfect use case for the Portal, so I hope it works out. Being able to spend a bit more time on my PlayStation without having to disappear to another room would be perfect.
You should probably pre order as I see this selling out and it’s being released about 45 days before Christmas. I did my pre order Sept 1st. I’ve seen comments where they are loving this in countries like China and Japan.
Looking forward to doing a video on it when it drops for sure! I know a lot of people (heck, myself included) wanted to see a more fully formed handheld, but it'll still be great for some use cases I think.
@@YourPlayer2 Yes, agreed. Ideally I’d love a follow-up to PSP or Vita. I had both back in the day, and I’d love to see what Sony could do if they really went for a stand-alone handheld or hybrid console.
I will be getting the portal. I have never been a fan of portal device controls. The thumbsticks are terrible in my opinion. But when I saw the dual sense controls on the portal I thought now this I can mess with.
What an absolute waste of money. I really want to encourage Sony to make a new, awesome handheld, but this is such a wasted opportunity, plus here in Canada is priced much higher. I’m already not using my backbone, so this is an easy pass for me.
Yeah I'd have MUCH preferred a true handheld, but I think this will still have some merit for me personally. I have a backbone as well just haven't gotten around to playing with it yet.
@@YourPlayer2 well I appreciate you doing the dirty work for us 😆 I love odd tech, heck I still have my HP Touch Pad, but this for me will be like that one, only purchased when it goes on fire sale.
I bought it just to be able to play in bed and not squint my eyes to see the tv across the room lol. Plus it’ll be fun to do trophies since the switch doesn’t have any achievements and steams suck
great review. im definitely preordering as this is made just for me. i cant explain it but ive had the ps5 since launch and played it a couple dozen times. something about having to turn on the tv, and the ps5, and update etc when i can just get on my pc and game stops me from playing it. but having a handheld made for the ps5 i feel like it will make me want to play it more often.
Appreciate it, David! Definitely going to do a more thorough look at it when it launches but agreed that the handheld form factor has its own appeal :)
My concern is stick drift / replacement and the latency. I’m sure it works great with single player games. But if I could play destiny or cod…that would have me pre order it. I look forward to your review.
I play 2k bro and pre ordered is it shouldn’t lag as much because it’s all play station and it’s like a stream if ya WiFi garbage the game will be garbage but if it’s decent connection it should work. I barley be home but always wanna play my game and im always near WiFi so I definitely can’t wait till the 15th
While it may seem useless at first given that good quality mobile devices and PCs can use Remote Play anyway, the Portal has an advantage for having a controller built-in. I think some uses would include someone wanting to watch Netflix on the TV or playing in a different room without getting a separate TV or monitor. While it isn't as fully portable like the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck/ROG Ally, or gaming laptop, I'd say it's useful if you have strong Internet. Having both used a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One/Series X controller, I can admit the battery life on the DualShock 4 isn't as good. My Xbox Controller using rechargeable Ni-Mh AA batteries (Energizer and Duracell) tends to last longer, even better than the "controller battery packs" claiming 800-1400 mAh. I believe you can use PS Remote Play on the ROG Ally although you must use the DualShock 4 or DualSense controller to play PS4/PS5 games as the ROG Ally's controller doesn't work.
I DEFINITELY represent the scenario you've described here and can't wait to swing around NYC as Spidey while throwing on Into the Spider-Verse in the background- ESPECIALLY given that Visions Academy and Peter's old high school stomping grounds are supposed to be in it! Also really looking forward to the convenience of a pick-up-and play solution ya know? And given that I probably will MOSTLY play it at home, will definitely be keeping a backup battery nearby just to be safe :)
Yeah, if I had a PS5 and not already have a ton of other platforms taking up my time (including a steam deck for my handheld fix) I would definitely be interested in it as well. Honestly it's cheaper than I feared. Assuming the display and speakers are good quality I think it's a very interesting product. But since I do already have so many platforms and now that many playstation games are coming to PC, I think I will skip the console entirely. I don't mind waiting for PC releases. Hope you'll enjoy it though :)
Don't get me wrong I'd DEFINITELY have preferred they do an OLED but that probably would've pushed the price even higher. Here's hoping it's a solid system and take care, fin!
I'm a little confused with some of the comments I hear about the Portal. Can I play games that are on my PS5 Console, on the Portal if I am not home? As long as I'm on a strong wifi that is.
@@YourPlayer2 Can you play games that are from the Ps5 even if you don't have one? What about the copies of the game itself are they provided on the handheld?
Good review. Most reviewers don't mention the fact that it is indeed touch screen. Also, there are BT transmitters that are 3.5mm ready but then again, there's lag so I think Sony is making consumer up their game wirelessly or plug in direct for best experience. I am part of the preorder bunch and am waiting for the Explore preorder drop. Hopefully there are more specs that are worth mentioning as these get into the wild
For the people who already have the 3D pulse it does bt via dongle so if you are at home it will still work since it will be adapted to the ps5 out of the house they can use the double ended aux it comes with
The Portable supports propertery wireless audio technology without BT and has a 3.5mm headphone jack which requires you to use Sony's new playstation branded headsets but if it had Bluetooth it would please some people.
Do you know if the UCB C port is capable of video out? Use cases: connect to an external monitor/TV in other rooms. Also connect to my AR Glasses (RokidMax).
Yes looking forward to getting mine, can play Spiderman & various other titles in my back catalogue sat on the sofa or in bed. Without sitting at my main setup all the time.
I agree joycons aren’t great but but when you put a satisfy grip on your switch it makes it 10x times better. I’m stoked for the portal because remote play is lag with backbone and same with pc. Just lag and not playable most of the time.
Concur on the grips. Satisfy grip on the Lite & Skull & Co Neo grip on the OLED, absolute must try for handheld comfort. Sure Nintendo may attempt to change to a similar design if another generation hybrid system comes out & hopefully backwards compatibility if games can benefit the hardware bump. PS Portal looks & sounds interesting, hopefully people get good use out of them & their reliable...
I should give that a shot sometime! As for the backbone I have one I haven't touched but sort of figured this would be a better experience but we'll see!
The new PlayStation handheld’s actually not selling very well at all pre-orders are very low on it. I picked one up personally, but that’s just because I want to be able to play my PlayStation anywhere in the house and you know always using a phone and other devices to do that it doesn’t really work the best so I am hoping that this works really good for that. And it’s not my Internet connection or anything because I do have 2 TB Internet connection so I know it’s not that
I did not think of the stick drift until you mentioned it. They should have done something similar to the duelsense edge remote. But I did pre-order mine as well.
@@SaschaKleiber basic wear and tear of the analog stick which eventually makes the character in the game move by themselves without touching the analog stick
For its limitations, $200 seems too high. The fact that it cant just be a Playstation Plus Streaming device Sony is missing out on sales. I know a lot of Switch/Xbox users that would have bought this just to play Bloodborne and other exclusives. I'm sure these will hit Facebook marketplace for around $100 by Spring.
I hear ya- I wonder if they'll price drop it on a long enough timeline to something like 150? But I DO like the idea of having a portable Bloodborne machine dedicated to the task :p
@YourPlayer2 I mean you hit the nail on the head with the Steamdeck. I use mine almost 50/50 for steam and PS Remote Play. The only thing it doesn't do is allow remote play outside of the PS5s current wifi network. If it did that then there would be little point not getting one over this.
I think that's a valid concern! Something else pointed out to me that might be helpful is apparently these are the PSVR2 sticks rather than the DualSense sticks so here's hoping they perform well.
What I would actually be excited about is: ONE PS5 => TWO Portals to play games with my wife with only one PS5. That's the only reason I would buy it. I can't justify buying a second PS5 for some reason.. even if I can afford it, it seems like I wouldn't use it that much. So the Portal could have filled the gap there.. but I don't think they made it happen.
I love my ps5 games. I love my girlfriend. My girlfriend wants wo watch tv. I want to play my ps5 games. Ive bought a PlayStation portal Happy wife happy life
I have a Bluetooth adapter dongle that I got for my 3ds for 35mm jacks. So I will be able to use AirPods or maybe the pulse headset or my steel series I think. No way I’m paying for more headphones.
You guys in the comments are not understanding a lot about the portal and that maybe what the problem is or it’s not being explained correctly on other videos and you come here without listening to his video. The PS5 doesn’t even have Bluetooth right? Like are y’all even in the Sony ecosystem to not know that. You have to put a drive into the usb port then connect you headset through Bluetooth. The portal is made to fiction like the dual sense controller you guys know that right so you also know that you plug your headset to the controller. Also the big thing is everyone is missing and I found this out by sending Sony an email when I preordered mine. You can stream PlayStation games, but not natively on the Portal on its own. You have to be connected to through remote play then go to your games you want to stream with your PlayStation Plus Premium account. I was told by Sony that anything the PS5 can do in your home can be done on the Portal but not standalone it has to be connected to remote play, so for example if you want to listen to Spotify on the Portal you can but not standalone. Also it’s not the same joysticks from the dual sense, it’s the joysticks from the PS VR controllers. You guys please get the correct information please.
Yeah I mean it would've been nice to have a new Sony portable that COULD handle a lot of these functions standalone, but who knows, maybe someday in the future they will. And good catch on the analog sticks- I thought they were DualSense sized at first but a few have pointed out that they are indeed more akin to the PSVR2 controller sticks. Although having played my buddy's a bit I can say they were comfortable!
I originally preordered, but I recently cancelled it. Why? I needed additional funds to buy a new video card for my PC LOL. But really, I am going to wait on reviews.
I've heard the analogue sticks are unfortunately the smaller psvr2 variety, rather than the full-size dual sense ones. Also, what happens if this thing gets stick drift? Other than that, I'm excited about it
Honestly. I cant just sit in a chair for 3+ hours and game anymore. This is for the lazy and old gamers that can just lay in bed without the hassle of grabbing a remote and tablet/phone and deal with the remote play connection. Turn on and just game lol
really want this. my only gripe is the haptic feed back now my little boy loves it. me i have raynauds in fingers zero feeling (when i mean zero i have sliced into it with a chefs knife didnt notice till the ketchup) but my son says its better than the switch and omg he is a N fan boy. but this to have to play when watching some sports on tv as welll would be so cool
I preordered one. I don’t give a flip about Bluetooth sound, so that’s not an issue for me. I just want to play PS5 without being tethered to my system and tv.
I got the portal because my ps is in the living room and sometimes I want to go upstairs and play in bed or maybe sit in my husbands man cave with him and play while he watches football I think this is a great product
Solid reason to go for it! I'm wrapping up my review of it and should be out this week but the short story is far from perfect but still pretty solid if you're looking for some extra flexibility to your point!
I mean a Laptop, tablet, or phone can do what this does but you also get bluetooth... This thing is beyond stupid. Unless you get paid to review it I don't see the logic in this.
Well I mean it's definitely not going to be for everyone, but I like the idea of a streamlined device that serves exactly the function of extending my PS5 experience around the house!
Nah definitely not interested in this my internet is shit and I prefer local games I am however getting an iPhone 15 pro max for RE DS and AC Mirage lol
But in another video from someone else it was said that the joysticks are not the same size like the standard controller and are indeed a bit smaller? Are you sure about that info?
I love the psp and the vita I have multiple systems, but this has nothing for me . Not even the price can get me to buy it. Makes sense for some though
I think it depends on the device you're playing it with? I had trouble getting haptics to work on...I think Mac when i tried it previously I believe because there weren't drivers for it that allowed it to be activated.
I remote play using the backbone and it's exactly what I expected. Streaming your console to a second screen that's highly dependent on your internet, I'd expect the portal will be exactly the same thing.
I find my backbone doesn’t do much to help my streaming. Lots of latency between my controller and my game and it’s so infuriating at times, however it works amazing for my mobile games, was able to play COD Mobile and Madden Mobile with no issues. I keep hearing people say the Portal is supposed to reduce the latency issue and let you play your PS5 anywhere as long as your home internet connection and your current location internet connection is strong enough for the remote play to work (if that’s true then that’s a huge game changer for streaming) I want one, but I think I’ll wait until more people have actually used it and tested all these supposed features.
As my to go too tech guy, I would disappointed if you didn't haha I'm not gonna bother, not because I don't like it, but my PS5 gathers dust with the switch, and is only for exclusives 😂
LoL glad to be of service, Sam XD Generally my Switch and Xbox have gathered dust but the latter's getting a LOT of play lately as I've become obsessed with Dead by Daylight :p Do you play?! If so and you wanna get together for some multiplayer lemme know and we can survive the Entity's disciples together
Well, I think it'll be far from their BEST handheld so far, but again, if it does what it says competently I still have use of it. I like using the Steam Deck for the purpose as well, but that requires some additional setup that's not super user-friendly. With this I'm paying mostly for the convenience of pick-up-and-play.
Nah it'll only work with the PS5 so far as I know- It's POSSIBLE someone will jailbreak it as I believe it's running android, but with no expandable storage I'm not sure how useful that will be.
I pre ordered cause I think it’ll be good for me, recently had a baby, don’t get to sit on a console and game as much as I used to so being able to be in a seperate room and still play games and have it around. For me I’ll probably use it at home 70% of the time anyways where I have gig internet already
Hope it works well for ya and congrats on the new baby, Derek! Hopefully you can still get some game time in here and there and the Portal serves you well :)
I think that's a good way to put it! Would be cool if they found a way to extend functionality beyond mirroring for certain games but I guess we'll see :)
Well, there are a few personal advantages for me. Obviously it's a content opportunity but I'm not really in the habit of buying stuff JUST to make a video, rather for this I just like the idea of a device that serves one function and provides a streamlined experience ya know? I love my Ally and Deck, but I also love the idea of every time I pick this up I know EXACTLY what I'm going to use it for- here's hoping it actually delivers though o_0
Since I’m not really a fan of any of the current ways to use remote play, I’m seriously considering this mainly for the form factor and the fact it can turn your ps5 on/off remotely. Using a Backbone requires constantly removing my phone case, plus there’s the battery drain, and I don’t want a phone with a larger screen because I have fairly small hands and they get pretty uncomfortable for me. And with a laptop/iPad, I just never find a comfortable position, they’re not great to play in bed/on the couch, and it’s a bit annoying having to reconnect the dual sense to the ps5 after remote play. So for my use case, of the portal has no latency issues, I’ll be buying it as I’d love to play my ps5 games when there’s someone else in the living room and they don’t want the tv on, or in a different room in the house.
That's the biggest draw for me as well- I think comfort and ease of use will make it a win for PS5 fans. I MAY end up doing a comparison video with the backbone just because I'm curious!
$200 is a generous price. People are just so accustomed to complaining about the price no matter what. It’s a controller that costs like $80 with a display and extra features on it. Sony didn’t have to make it cheaper. It’s surprisingly cheap considering it’s Sony and they overprice a lot of their products, but this is one that i can admit is well within that right price range.
Useless device😅 streaming ain’t there yet, so you stuck with using it around the house.. which beats the purpose. And dont forget that within a year the thing is gonna suffer from stickdrift which is hard to repair for the majority of people.. so you are gonna be stuck with a useless controller with a screen. People who are interested in handheld gaming are buying devices like the steam deck (yes more expensive) also not a one purpose device like this one.. this thing will be discontinued after a short time.. and dirt cheap within a year! Mark my words. Oh and literally everything with a screen you already own can do the same thing 😅😅
@@YourPlayer2 sure! Its a niche audience but sure! But then I would have been nice to be able to swap the sticks when the inevitable is gonna happen! And still I believe you are better of buying it a little later for a better price.
I, unlike others, was in love with the Portal the day they announced it. Preordered as soon as they opened them. I’m mostly likely going to use this like my Switch OLED that I take with me all around the house so I’m not too concerned with WiFi connectivity here. So damn excited, 2 weeks!
So say I have a ps5 at home and I wanna play on my work break. Will it work when it’s far away? I don’t get it… I want something portable that I can take around with me
Gotta be connected to wifi. Leave your ps5 in rest mode. If your job has wifi then your good. Ps5 and Portal have to be connected to wifi but does NOT have to be on same wifi band
Anthony is correct! As long as you have a good connection it should work, but I'll certainly put it through its paces and put an update video out whenever it drops.
Can't tell you how many times I was sitting on the couch or elsewhere in my house with my PS5 available... and just used the Steam Deck. So tempted for this! For now though, BG3's (janky) cross-play means I can play PS5 on the couch and then continue in bed, on the toilet or wherever else.
Oh same here- there are just times where I want to jump in but don't wanna go to my living room for it and just wanna swing around as Spidey for a bit in-between edits at the desk :p
