I got a Z 30 and I absolutely love it. It's small enough to put in my jacket pocket, and the photos are incredible. I don't miss the viewfinder at all. In fact I feel like I frame pictures much better looking at the screen.

For years I shot with a Nikon D3200 and just recently purchased a D7200. I found this channel doing a search for tutorial videos and was glad to see a professional photographer who used and spoke well of the D7200. That assured me that, for my needs, I made a good choice with the D7200. The Z30 is definitely on my radar now. Henry, keep up the good work!

Definitely food for thought, I bought my D7200 inspired by your example… combined it with decent glass, my “entry level” 18-140 kit lens produces great photos as does my f4 70-200. Really happy with it. I’ve been thinking of the Z7II but the cost is a bit much at the moment, so your thoughts on the Z30 are really helpful for keeping me grounded, D7200 for a while yet I think. Thanks Henry, your enthusiasm inspires this old giffer with the dodgy knees to keep going with my photography!

i use a crop sensor nikon d3500 but the results and enjoyment i get out of this camera i've never felt the need to upgrade. to be honest Henry your the only one i watch every week as your enthusiasm for your work is so infectious, the way you go into rants about things is a joy to watch

I'm totally with you on this one Henry. Back to basics really does ground you and make you feel better about your photography. I've spent thousands on Canon gear and yet I get more pleasure from an old 35mm film camera or my medium format film camera. Pic #1 by the way. I prefer the house being off to one side.

The most important part of your gear is you. Gear that makes your job easier is great, but at the end of the day it's down to "the twelve inches behind the camera." I'm headed up into the Sierra Nevada this weekend with my Nikon D7000 - and since one of my stops is an old Gold Rush ghost town, my little 1950s Kodak Duaflex II is coming too for some black-and-white film shooting! I bought *that* on a nostalgic whim because I remember my Mom had one and it's challenging to shoot with because it's so deceptively simple - but it's also great fun too. (And the image quality is pretty good for a vintage snapshot box!) Thanks as always for the content.

Z30 + 23mm 1.7 here, great combination. Big sensor quality in a small sensor body. That sensor is particularly good with color. I will take better colors over more resolution every time.

I really liked image 2. It gave me more to look at. Also I use a Canon R7 for my wildlife and landscapes. I just take pictures as a hobby for a piece of mind. It is so relaxing. Although I tend to do more landscapes than wildlife. Thanks for doing these videos. I thoroughly enjoy your work.

Absolutely spot on Henry. I’ve recently bought a Z30 and now use it in preference to my D7200. With a lens adapter I can also use all my ‘old’ lenses including a 50mm F1.4 which gives fantastic results. Having both cameras, and being able to use the same lenses, I think I have all the bases covered, and unless you are going to enlarge images to mahoosive sizes, you don’t need any more pixels. Love the videos, keep ‘em coming!

@@michaellowe9276 in my experience the screen has not caused any issues. If it is particularly bright, I just re-angle the screen to get the best view. When I bought the z30, the justification to myself was that I wanted something that is small, light, quick to use, (as an iPhone), have interchangeable lenses, and also be able to switch to full manual controls. To my mind it has done that and exceeded all my expectations. Hope this helps?

I just purchased a canon R50 - small, crop sensor, entry level camera - because I started bicycle camping this summer. It's nice to have the R50 for two reasons the main one is size, it'll fit in a bag on my front handle bar without weighing it down. The second is I worry about my expensive gear bouncing up and down and jostling about. So far I've been very happy with the little camera. Like you mentioned (about your Nikon) the R50 is a newer Canon camera and it has a few more features that my old Canon full frame doesn't. I know exactly what you're saying - can't agree more. These smaller "entry level" cameras are great for travel. I look forward to seeing your bike packing adventures!

Great video Henry, thank you. I use my trusty Canon 90D , crop sensor camera, never had issues with it and the images it gives are great , I don't print much above 10×8 so it's perfect for me , had it two years and more than happy to keep using it till it falls apart,

Great video & message. Personally I use an entry level Canon DSLR. For the longest time I felt I needed to upgrade to a better camera. What changed my mind was a local trip I took with a professional photographer friend of mine. We were taking similar shots throughout the weekend, and a week later we met up to share images. I was hoping to get some constructive criticism from my friend, but once we compared the pictures, he clearly stated that he thought mine were better. Of course my head swelled a bit, but it made me realize what so many have said before, it is not the camera but the photographer that makes the picture. Really appreciate your channel. Keep up the great work.

Great professional video, very well done, thank you. The Z30 is a blast! I have a D5200 and D7000 cameras and the Z5 and Z30. out of the four I use the Z30 the most because 1) its small and light just carry it in my pocket 2) fantastic video and sound 3) decent battery life 4) silent shutter for events 5) the kit DX16-50 is very compact and sharp, great for travel. Since I do mostly indoor events I use exclusively the Z DX 12-28mm power zoom lens for capturing interiors and large groups close up. The power zoom is great for smooth video effects. I went recently to Japan and was contemplating taking the Z5 with Z24-120 F4 lens, but decided to take just the Z30. I did not regret it. I probably couldn't carry the Z5 for so many hours every day. The 12mm zoom proved priceless inside temples, shrines, crowded train stations etc. Lack of EVF is a serious problem on sunny days

I had a Nikon D7100 but never really got on with it. I felt it too big. Finally I bought a Fuji X-T20 and 16-80 lens. Small, capable and the best thing I ever bought. As soon as I picked it ul I knew I was home. Love at first use.

I admit that I only use my iPhone, and sometimes I dream about having a camera, but the reality is, I can travel so light with just my phone. So, I can relate to many of your points. I have my d3300, and d7100, love both cameras, I use my d3300 as my everyday camera, I take it everywhere, my d7100 is one of my cameras for astrophotography, with my canon 6d ( that was an affordable full frame for me) thanks for your hard work and honesty, your honest and open nature is my main reason for watching, but I do like the adventure blogs

I used a canon 90d, which is a crop sensor at x 1.6 "Enthusiast" camera. As a predominantly wildlife photographer, the extra reach I get with my sigma 150-600mm is huge. It's about what you capture, not what you capture it with

Hi Henry, Thanks for another grand day out. Greetings from the cheap seats of the D3500 and I remember the glory pre-bathing days of the D7200 very fondly. I've been plesantly surprised with the capability of the D3500 but I do find its limits more often than i'd like and have been looking at mirrorless,. If you add 20 to the Z30 you'll find you get a viewfinder minus a few more modern features ;-) My problem is deep pockets and short arms so the mirrorless transition will have to wait a while. The other drawback with the D3500 is the rather modest ( read absent ) ability to keep the weather out, hence great care when the sun doesn't shine. I absolutely agree that no camera is ever pefect, but the question to ask yourself is " is it perfect enough"... as the antidote to "GAS". I'd like something better, but honestly I find it hard to justify the need for it. BTW - Closer shot of the white cottage for me.

I enjoyed the video as usual Henry. I preferred image 2. I used to use the Nikon d3400 with quite a few different lenses which gave good results but i upgraded it to the Nikon d750 full frame which is a lot heavier with 17-35mm wide angle and 28-300mm which is all i need. Look forward to the next one.

I have the Z7 and a Zfc. The Zfc has essentially the same guts as the Z30. So I understand why you love it.

Like you, I do a lot of hiking and I have been using a Capture Clip for several years as well. A couple of years ago I went from my old Canon 60D to the Fuji X-T3 and saw a huge difference. Whereas the Canon weighed, well, like a cannon on the clip the Fuji was much lighter, easier and more comfortable to carry. I bought the Fuji specifically for its light weight and small size. Yes, the Canon fit in my fairly large hands better and I sometimes inadvertently press buttons on the Fuji but the size and weight more than make up for it. Unlike before, my camera now goes everywhere with me. By the way, I like the second photo better.

Another great video Henry. I first subscribed to your channel because, unlike nearly all other RU-vid photographers, you were using an 'entry level' crop sensor camera. At that time I was using my old Nikon D5100 and really enjoyed seeing the images you were able to create with similar kit. I will admit to feeling a wee bit pissed and cheated when you showed up with a 45mp mirrorless Z7. I have since moved on to a full frame mirrorless Z6 but I love seeing you back, at least in part, using more affordable kit. Oh... and I preferred image 2.

Great video, Henry!! I personally shoot with a Nikon d5200 that I purchased new in 2013. I have a Nikkor 35mm, 18-55 kit lens and the 55-300 kit lens as well. I purchased a Tokina 11-16mm and my most recent purchase was a Tamron 18-400mm all-in-one lens. I also use an iPhone 14 Pro Max. You have inspired me to dust off the old Nikon and get back to photography, as I've seen your shoots with the d7200 and the d3100. While I don't have such access to your types of scenery here in Philadelphia, USA, I will be trying to venture out to get some shots further out from the big city, and that means getting myself healthier to do it. I have very often thought about getting a z7 II, but between budget constraints and just the fact that I'm so used to this camera after ten+ years. I know how to make the old girl sing! Once again, great video, Henry!!

Great video Henry, I think I prefer image two, marginally. I have a z7ii and think its great but when hiking or weight is an issue I take along my ZFC, Love the fully artic screen and it has a viewfinder. It’s standard lens gives good results but if I need extra length I also have the Z24-200 plus a number of other Z lenses including the z 105mm macro .

I use Nikon Z30 myself, it's the only mirrorless interchangeable lens camera I can afford and it's a fantastic walkabout travel camera

I feel the same way about “entry level cameras.” I used my Nikon D7000 for over 10 years before recently upgrading to the D850. Honestly, I feel as though my image quality has leveled-up now that I’m full-frame with that incredible sensor. My situation called for the increase in MP as I’m showing my work in galleries and I’m wanting those large crisp images viewed up close. But I agree, photography is about composition and storytelling, and you can do that with any camera available to you. Great video once again!

For me the magic is in the glass and composition, everything else boils down to the exposure triangle and personal preferences for controls, features and useability.

I have just sold my full-frame kit and moved to a ZF-C. The image quality is great but I find the kit so much more enjoyable to use and so much lighter. I am more likely to carry the camera with me. I am coming back to Nikon from a LUMIX system and am loving the autofocus and the user interface of Nikon.

Another enjoyable video Henry. I think crop sensor cameras are great for landscapes as they reach the telephoto end with much lighter weight. But they need to be modern when it comes to dramatic gloomy weather and higher ISOs. I still use a 15 year old Sony because it works with my legacy Minolta lenses, but ISO 800 is often too much .

I bought my Z50 before I snatched a Z7. The Z50 is still a blast, gives great images, and has that compact benefit with less weight. Sharing the lenses is a bonus. I’m impressed with the images from your Z30. I owned a D80 and then a D7100 before the Z line came along.

I have moved to my Z50 and 18-140 for hiking and taking pictures on the South West Coast Path instead of my Z7 etc to cut back in weight with my hiking backpack.

Great video Henry 👌🏻 I predominantly shoot wildlife and have bought and sold so many bodies over the years (thinking they'd give me better images) 😅 Thankfully, it didn't take too long to realise that it's all about the glass and knowing how to use your camera properly. For the last 4 years, I've been using my old Nikon D700 (cheap as chips nowadays), and Nikon D300 if I need extra reach. These are both 12mp sensors, but I believe in the right conditions, with good lenses and if setup correctly, they'll keep up (if not outperform) anything worth 10x the amount 👍🏻 Look forward to your next adventure 😃

I prefer image 2 I think the background with more hills/mountains is more interesting. I agree that the number of MP between a crop sensor and full frame isn't a big deal for the majority of people, but the bigger pixel size with a full frame means that full frame cameras tend to have better noise control in low light situations.

Hi from Cologne, I prefer Image ll as well! And, get yourself a Nikon Z50, same image quality and a viewfinder on there. And a 12-28 lens for it. Then you have everything from wide to Tele on two Bodies… Cheers!

Another excellent video Henry, I use a Canon 90D crop sensor camera, and I have no interest in going full frame, I find the extra reach for all my lenses is what I am happy with, which brings me onto the a&b image, I much preferred the closer shot of the cottage, as I like to try that kind of image

I love my Nikon Z50. Very similar to the Z30, however it does have a electronic viewfinder. Still considered a entry level but has (almost) all the features of the big boys. Lightweight for hiking and travel just like the Z30.

In the real world it hard to justify the high costs of some of the gear that can be purchased. Especially if one really is a hobbyist and ameteur. I think it's a cleaver idea to try and relate to those who can't buy the high end gear and then show that good photography can happen with entry level cameras. Setting a good example Henry. BTW I thought your first image, dispite the lack of color as you intimated, really showed well. There was enough color to make the image a beautiful capture and a keeper and one to be proud of in my opinion. Great photo.

Oh, no viewfinder would be a no-go for me. I almost never use the liveview.. Not sure I would ever get used to that! Other than that, your Z30 sounds like a great camera! At 13:05, I prefer the second image where you're zoomed in with the cottage in the middle. Beautiful image!

Hi Henry. I shoot with a Nikon D7500 and D500, both crop sensors, and print images beautifully at A3 and A2. Have no intention to go mirrorless!!

Been a Pentaxian for decades. Im use to not having all the bells and whistles of the best cameras. My nifty fifty makes fantastic images on my APS-C DSLR, as do my"better"=10x the cost lenses. Some of my best images were taken my least costly gear.

I have actually been looking for a smaller compact companion for my full frame cameras which I use a lot for landscape photography on the Atlantic coast. I have been considering this one for many of the same reasons you mention. Only the lack of a view finder has held me back. I may actually try this one and I have the same zoom lens as well.

I love the Z30 and Z50. They fit my hand better than the large body Nikons. Also the Z50 has an electronic view finder.

I like image #1 better because of the offset of the cottage to the right - just me. I love my APS-C Nikon D5200 @24MP!

Image 1, house nicely compliments the image, in 2 it looks like main subject taking away attention from rest. At least I feel this way. As for crop sensors, I use crop sensor camera since forever. I actually moved down from FF (and mirorless) into APS-C and DSLR :D so I've gone backwards with my gear. APS-C is smaller and cheaper, even in DSLR form, then full frame. And I never felt I missed something with smaller format. I have like 1/3rd of top FF sensor resolution and I still can print 40*60cm without issues. Give good enough detail for anything I may want to hang on my wall or give as a gift to someone.

Alright, you have convinced me. I think I want a Nikon z30. Been using a 1 inch sensor camera for the last year. Some pics came out great, others were very disappointing.

I don't own a full frame. I did however upgrade my canon 760D to a 7DMkII this year. The main reason was that I needed the extra capability for getting into wildlife photography. They are both crop sensor but the 7D2 is much heavier. In many ways I miss the plastic light weight 760D. Recently working in India I took my canon compact and was surprised how good the images were.

I used ended up using the z30 more than the z6 on my current trip I even kept the kit lens on. It's a great little camera.

@@aqilstudio9742 yes and has advance features as well , but the lack of the EVF at certain times can be problematic, I still use it a lot. I just come back from Venice and the z30 was still my main camera for this trip.

Great video as always Henry, I always shoot on a budget, I am my disabled wifes full time carer so get a ridiculously small amount of money each week which means I have to shoot on a tight budget. My main camera I use, and have for the last 5 years, is a Sony nex c-3 with a Fujian 35mm f1.7 cctv adapted lens, a quirky lens that has some strange characteristics, I have been a macro shooter so that lens is perfect for that wide open but just recently I tried some street photography with it and found if I have it on f16 it is a sharp lens corner to corner, the c3 is on it's way out so am saving for possibly an olympus e-p7, there's a couple on mpb atm, to replace it, I have a m/43 adapter for the fujian so will use it on there. My 2nd camera is a Sony A390 and I have 4 lenses for it, a minolta af 70-210mm f4, known as the beercan lens, a minolta af 35-70mm f4, a sony 18-70mm and a sigma 70-300mm. None of those lenses cost me more than £15 each. I get images I am happy with from both cameras using all lenses, and I have an a mount to e mount adapter so can use all the lenses on the c3. I am reasonably happy with this set up but know I could be happier with a slightly newer camera 😁

Thanks for doing what you do Henry! I'm a beginner and have a Canon M50. I want to upgrade to a full-frame eventually, but I've been acquiring other gear like lenses, filters, and a tripod first. I'm happy to see these great images in this video taken with a crop sensor camera.

Be careful. The Canon M50 is a EF-M camera, Canon's current full frame cameras are RF-mount, your EF-M lenses won't be able to be used on a full-frame camera. Canon's older EF lenses on the other hand can be used on both EF-M and RF mount cameras, with the appropriate adapter. So if you're buying lenses hoping to reuse them on a full frame later on, be careful.

@@simval84 I'm exclusively using EF lenses with an adapter for this very reason. Given, I will have to sell my EF-S lenses when I upgrade to a full frame camera, but my latest purchase was an EF 24-105 f/4 L USM II. That baby is gonna be my primary lens for a long time.

If you put your Z7 into DX mode you would get the same MP files from both cameras so image quality should be fairly comparable but you would probably get the better images from the Z7 due to the sensor technology and IBIS. The thing that most people forget is that whatever you buy today you are going to get a decent camera - The days of ropey digital cameras are long gone. I have a Zfc that I keep in my work van so I always have a camera when I’m away for work. I also have a Z8 as although Landscape photography is my passion I also do other types of photography as well.

I'm used to crop sensor cameras, having shot with one for years. You are highlighting that it's primarily the person behind the camera that is most important. Once you have good gear whether it's 'amateur' or 'professional' it's about the person. The Z30 doesn't have all the features it's more expensive brethren have but it does the basic job a camera needs to do. The features make the photographer's life nicer (and there a couple I would like to have on my camera) but they don't really make you a better photographer.

I started with apsc then bought into the “full frame hype” 🙄. A couple months ago I sold off all my full frame stuff and went back to apsc and couldn’t be happier. Imagine quality is just as good and my back is much happier because of the lighter weight.

It's cool that you're using what one might term "entry level". Much like my D3300, your Z30 has a good sensor/processor- and for landscapes, where one shouldn't be in a rush- they're absolutely fine. Yes- FF has advantages- but most of that is on the extreme end of things- such as poor light... The crop sensor has its advantages also- you mentioned the extra zoom- all else being equal- and you don't have to step down the aperture so much for a good depth of field- which can often compensate for the stop or two deficiency in low light... I wonder- have you seen the 12-28mm lens for the crop Z... wouldn't take up much room in the bike bag... ;)

I've not tried the Z30 Henry, but I think the lack of a viewfinder would be a big issue for me. I did however have a Z5 with the 24-200mm, and that was my travel kit. I sold them though to help fund the purchase of my Z8. I do really miss the lens, as I found it to be very versatile, and much sharper than I expected at 200mm. I prefer shot 2 in the video because to me it feels more balanced. I'd love to have a small lightweight set up again, but for now I'm looking for a small mirrorless to convert to infrared, rather than using the screw on filter.

I am very much an entry level amateur and have got some great photos when compared to others with top range equipment (imho). Just returned from south coast of Ireland - fantastic scenery would love to see you do videos from there 👍👍.

Henry, my vote is for the shot on the right. The white cottage grabs my attention and leads my eye directly to the two peaks in the background. It makes for a more interesting pic, IMO. I recently sold most of my (GAS) gear and settled down with just my Nikon Z50 and the Z16-50mm kit lens. I love the Z50, (sibling to your Z30, but with a VF). I was planning to add a used Z50-250mm zoom, but when I saw that you're using the 24-200mm on your Z30, I wondered if that's what I should buy instead. I then would end up with a nifty all-in-one walk-around camera, and use the Z16-50mm only for specific shots. Any thoughts, sir?

Still using my D5600 for my photography, it still gives a decent image quality, but recently, I've thinking of trying/buying one of the full frame Z series.

Hi Henri, I think you are absolutely right. I use the Nikon Z50, same as the Z30 only the Z50 dóés have a viewfinder (as you know). The Z50 with both standard lenses, The: 16-50 and the 50-250 is a wonderful compact and lightweight photography-set. It’s not perfect, but you can easily print up to 60x90 cm. My Z5 fulframe camera with the Z24-70 f/4.0 and the AF 70-200mm f/4.0 (with FTZ) I use for the more “slow” photography. They make a very nice couple, because only the size is different, but the handling is the same and the quality of my Z5 is only just a bit beter. Depth-of-field is beter on the DX than on the fullframe, só I need to use a smaller diafragma wich leads to more defraction and I need a higher ISO-value. Só the beter quality of the Z5 is reduced a bit by those two aspects, as you know. Só my Z50 and Z5 make a fine duo with almost the same image quality. I love both camera’s, and sometimes I bring them both, because of the fog in wich it is dangerous to change lenses. Kind greetings, Arthur, landscape photographer from the Netherlands.
