BARCELONA TRAVEL VLOG 2022 | A BLACK GIRL'S GUIDE TO BARCELONA
This video is all about my experience traveling to Barcelona as a Black woman. I did not enjoy my time in Barcelona and I wouldn't recommend traveling here to other Black women. I found Barcelona to be very racist and uncomfortable for me as Black woman. Obviously you can experience racism anywhere in the world but no one wants to experience it on vacation. I have a playlist of other travel vlogs that I have done and I highly recommend the other places I've traveled to.

I went in 2017 and with my sister, you will run into those racist people against brown folks. Went to a restaurant sat outside and all the waiters bypassed our table. The lady who was serving drinks came over and asked had we been waited on. She ended up serving our table and checking on us while we were there. Will you experience yes, is like everywhere else. Yet you will meet very nice people as well. Went to a 🎶 musical and definitely stood out, but people we encountered were nice.

I have lived in Barcelona before and traveled there many times, and I have never experienced anything negative or perceived racism. The only 2 incidents that I had were with people from Latin America, not actual Spanish people from Spain. I feel it's completely irresponsible to visit one city in Spain and snatch away other Black women's/people's sovereignty by telling them where they should or shouldn't go based in ones extremely limited experience. For contrast, I absolutely LOVE Spain, was in Barcelona AND Andalusia this summer for a month and had a FANTASTIC time. My experience doesn't erase anyone's negative experience....however I realize that what some Black people consider racism, may not be racist to me or other Black people. I'll be honest, nothing in this video I heard sounded like racism to me, but just seems like the young woman was already a bit on edge and expecting negativity, and the place just wasn't her vibe. A place not being your vibe doesn't equal racism. I am making this comment for BW who want to travel to Spain, but want a contrasting view point. I know a few BW who live in Spain (various ages) and LOVE it! So Black women.....be FREE to have your OWN experience, and know that your experience may not ( and likely WILL NOT) be her experience.

Based on this comment I truly don't think you understand the intricacies of racism which tells me you aren't even able to assess your own experience with a critical lens, so you're in no position to tell Black women if they will be treated poorly here. As a Black American woman I have had to experience racism so closely my entire life, so if I'm picking up on something being racist it is and it's really not for you to have an opinion on. I'd recommend you reading up more about racism so you aren't constantly putting yourself into vulnerable and dangerous positions because you don't racism is a possibility. Anyone with a brain knows to take my experience and form their own opinion. There are so many other videos with positive experiences about Spain so idk why you commented on mine. Ms. Spain over here wanted attention so let me give it to you.

Or maybe I understand that Black people aren't a monolith. Maybe I don't find purpose or pleasure in robbing other Black people of their autonomy, freedom, or sovereignty to make choices for themselves and travel freely to whatever country they choose to by telling them they SHOULD NOT travel to a particular country because I had a certain experience there. Maybe I understand that whatever experience a Black person has during their travels is their own unique experience, good or bad, and doesn't determine the experience I will have in the same location. I guess you think you read me, but you just further confirmed the fact that you believe all Black people have to think like you, and if they don't, their point of view is mute.@@mayasvalentine

So what if you had a good time. This is not your video. This is her experience as she is allowed to say she would not recommend Barcelona. Don't you know how reviews work? And if you don't think being compared to gorillas is racist, do you! 🤡 Your comment is so strange I honestly think you're a blackfish account. Either way it's sad.

@@mayasvalentine Black or not, your perspective changes everything and it seems you already had a negative perspective from the start so you’d be more inclined to find more negative encounters. This could of course be due to your initial experience ruining it for you but like someone else said, not everything you described gave off ‘this is racism’, but rather you perceived it as racist/ bad vibes. Which is valid for you as a personal experience but can’t be generalised to saying it’s a racist place
@mayasvalentine
@mayasvalentine 2 месяца назад
@@thandiebbz1 I completely disagree with you. I have a masters degree in social science with a concentration in the intersection of Black politics and Women & Politics. I probably understand racial dynamics better than anyone you know, so no I’m not talking about the racial dynamics of Spain because I’m prone to thinking about race. I am using my personal experience, the colonialist history of Spain, and general racial studies to unpack the dynamics here. I think that you have an unnatural allegiance to ignorance so this isn’t the page for you.

I'm so sorry you didn't have a good time. I'm Afro-Latino from the States and my experience was the polar opposite. We loved Barcelona and were treated very well (keep in mind that we speak Spanish fluently) With regards to the "I'll make her my Black girlfriend" comment you heard, that dude was actually giving you a compliment. It's widely known in the Latin community that Spanish men have a fascination with darker-skinned women. I remember a Spanish male waiter recommended we visit a restaurant in Barcelona. He told us the hostess was one of the most gorgeous women he'd ever seen. When we visited this restaurant, the hostess was a darker-skinned Black woman. What you interpreted as "racism" was simply a horny dude that liked you. Also, "the club" probably isn't the best place to meet quality people...that's a worldwide rule. Respectfully, the issues you had with Barcelona mainly stem from a lack of critical thinking and ignorance of cultural norms. I wish you well on your travels and hope you re-visit Barcelona one day with a more mature perspective.👍

LMAO this comment did not pass the vibe check. It's clear you've never watched any of my videos if you think I have trouble critically thinking. The reason I was able to identify and address the racism that I experienced is due to my critical thinking and experience. I have a Master's degree from the University of Chicago in Social Science. My research is literally all about the intersection of Black politics and Women and Politics. I'm sure the reason you think you didn't experience racism is because of your choice to be ignorant and to turn a blind eye to racial issues. So glad that you had a great experience in Barcelona but it's extremely problematic to question my experience as a Black woman in a country with such a long and disgusting racial history. Not to mention they literally to this day have a massive statue of Christopher Columbus. Please educate yourself and never correct a Black woman speaking about their experience. You can say that your experience was different but don't ever invalidate theirs. You should have learned that by now at your big age.

@@mayasvalentine yeah I’m black and it wasn’t helpful dear. I was looking at it so I could get more information of what it would be like in Barcelona. instead I just saw a lot of food and a lot of selfies and people talking. A guide is instruction for people to review in order to participate in an activity, care for someone/something, or travel to a location..
