Its odd how big the stigma on veganism is. Even when I had been Vegetarian for months and was unconsciously going vegan I thought veganism was way too strict and complex. Now that I am vegan I feel like its easy as fuck.

I would agree that vegetarianism is not a bad way to ease into veganism. Then again it lacks most of the advantages that come with veganism if you just substitute meat and dairy with mostly dairy.

Hi I have a question. There is this tea I really love, but you need milk to make it. It is the only thing preventing me from veganism and last week I decided this is enough. So I got almond milk and used that as a substitute, but it turned out disgusting. Do you know the best substitute for milk?

I went from omnivore to vegan overnight a little over two years ago despite having very few cooking skills at the time so it's definitely doable! Mindset is everything... once I learned the truth about animal agriculture, there was simply no turning back for me. It's never been an easier time to go vegan as it is now.
@csil2863

I grew up on a beef farm in Wisconsin and worked a good part of my adult life in various aspects of livestock agriculture. I have frequently seen, and in some cases participated in, horrific animal suffering. This is not accidental suffering, but planned. Here are some examples: dehorning by chemical burning, burning with heat, sawing horns off (this is especially horrible); docking lambs and calf tails with pruning type shears; branding with red hot branding irons; castration by elastic banding, or cutting the scrotum open and pulling the testicals out snapping the connecting cords. Then there is the unplanned suffering, but just as horrific. The most common are downer cows that are shipped to the slaughter house before they die. Often, if they cannot walk, but still alive and aware, they are dragged by the foot, up a ramp, into a truck with a winch. These things happen on large 'industrial' farms as well as the idylic 'family farm'. For the most part now I eat a whole food plant diet, but very rarely I will have animal product. Nevertheless, I am very aware of the suffering involved in procucing that animal product.

i've been a vegetarian for 6 months now and i love it. i'm to the point now where i don't consume pure eggs, milk or cheese but will consume products containing these. i think more omnivores should try vegetarianism first. i might have failed if i went straight vegan, but that's only because i don't cook a lot for myself. but then again, it's about mindset. i know one thing... i'll never go back to meat. i think veganism seems so much more achievable now as a vegetarian.

Any other overnight vegans out there??? I discovered veganism through diet and years of slave diets, didn't stay vegan because I didn't care about myself, then months later found Gary Yourofsky and went vegan overnight for ethics. I would have stayed vegan for health if it wasn't for diary, which lead me to eat other animal products. But ironically, I went vegan because of the dairy cows.

Hi. I am a teenage vegetarian. And I find all of your points valid. BUT transitioning from meat-eater to vegan is a very big step, and that is one of the reasons I "just" became a vegetarian. But I'm also still living at home, and it would definitely be a bit too difficult to go vegan, since the rest of my family and friends still eat meat. But I'm definitely considering going vegan when I move away from home☺️

I agree with these points and they help me to remember why I strive to be a vegan. I say "strive" because I am also recovering from an eating disorder and it is difficult to balance the two (for me anyway, as I know there are plenty of other people who find this silly) 24/7 and still get the nutrients I need without letting the eating disorder take advantage. One day I'll get there! And lovely people like you who don't judge appreciate the effort really help. 😊

Rosie A. just take it slow. I had an ED for over 5 years (with a lovely edge of alcoholism to top it all) and a not-so-healthy relationship with food even after I was off the hook. When I went vegan my relationship with food improved a lot and I've seen some friends I made at rehab feel the same way. Everyone is different and you just need some time to figure it out. Just hang in there, will you?

I have milk allergies, which helped me not get caught up in the vegetarian conundrum. When you actually see the filth that any animal is forced to live in I don't know why you would want to put that in your mouth, and thats just arguing from a very pragmatic place, you are bringing disease home with you when you buy animal products, plain and simple. You aren't going to take your eggs out and rub them in poop, but they already come coated in fecal bacteria anyway. How does this make any sense? It doesn't.
@Ben-fr8gi
@Ben-fr8gi 7 лет назад
There's a lot of promotion of allegedly ethical eggs and dairy. I believed it, for a long time, but learning more made me want to be vegan. So, now I am. But vegetarians are not doing badly. When people are living in a largely pro-meat environment, vegetarianism is already a distinctly different choice. The large scale meat eating going on may also make milk and eggs feel much more harmless than they really are.

I like this channel and I love how hard you try to base your opinions on facts, but you need to learn what "statistically significant" means. Every time you talk about cancer you bring up these numbers for rates of cancer and next to them there's always an interval. This is called the confidence interval. Any value between the two extremes cannot be considered statistically significant because there's >5% chance that the result occurred purely from coincidence. So, for example, you brought up a chart that has rates of "all female cancer" for vegans and vegetarians. Vegetarians were given a rate of 1.04 with a C.I. of (0.87, 1.25) and vegans were given a rate of 0.71 with a C.I. of (0.50, 1.01). This means that 95% of vegetarians fell within the range of 0.87-1.25 times the rate of cancer as compared with omnivores and 95% of vegans fell within the range of 0.50-1.01 times the rate of cancer as compared with omnivores. You cannot claim that vegetarians experience cancer 4% more than omnivores. Based on this study, vegetarians do not even come close to experiencing cancer at statistically significant rates different than those of omnivores. An example of a statistically significant result showing the vegetarians experience 4% higher cancer rates would be 1.04 with a C.I. of (1.01, 1.07). It would be very hard to get a C.I. that is that small (i.e. great methods, HUGE sample size) and that's because 4% is such a tiny difference. It would be much easier to refine the vegan statistic. However, even the statistic for vegans is not statistically significant because 1 (the same rate that omnivores get this cancer) is included in the confidence interval. So, an appropriate C.I. that shows a statistically significant result would be (0.52, 0.99). Whoever made this study would have to conclude that there is no significant difference in the rates of "all female cancer" based on your vegetarian/vegan diet (assuming that whoever conducted the study wants a good reputation) I know this seems like nit picking, but I swear it's incredibly important. There are already so many problems that are inherent to studies, it's a huge error to claim that there is a difference in cancer rates based on diet when the study does not show that. Like I said, I enjoy your channel and keep up the good work!

How do you feel about a progressive approach in order for people to remain faithful to their diet? For example, I started with cutting out red meat, then poultry, then fish, then all meat, then dairy directly (I became lactose intolerant), and then eggs directly. I consider myself a vegetarian because sometimes things like dressing or egg whites in veggie burgers slip past me. Yes, being vegan is my goal, but my boyfriend and I have tackled this progressively so we could learn how to cook and adjust our daily diets step by step for we both came from families that didn't give a shit about animal agriculture (my father has high blood pressure and cholesterol). I agree that veganism is the best way to protest animal cruelty, but I hope that not too much hate is thrown at vegetarians because I've found that it's a stepping stone to veganism. Thank you for your message. As a vegetarian, you've given me a lot to think about.

No more animal products for me. I suffered from metabolic syndrome (obesity, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and high blood sugar). I went whole food plant based no sugar oil or salt and I lost 65 pounds, all my conditions greatly improved, my gums stopped bleeding, and erections and energy returned. I used to have an appetite that was never satisfied; whole foods cured it. I no longer use a sleep apnea machine. Finally, the food is cheap-Beans, lentils, rice, potatoes and seasonal apples. Also, I save money by not having to buy pills or visit the Doctor. I am thankful to all the vegans who suffered attacks to reveal the truth to me.

Mike, I seem to have become lactose intolerant since going vegan. They say that's impossible, but I get sick when I accidentally eat dairy products now. I even bought some milk and drank it just to see and sure enough I ended up with immense stomach/intestinal pain about an hour later. I'm thinking it's because I was never officially weaned until I went vegan for a couple years. I'm wondering if most people are like that considering that we are taken from the breast or bottle and put on bovine milk and cheeses almost immediately.

Miko I think you've come to the right conclusion. Lactase, the protein that breaks down lactose, is only as available as its need. If a person discontinues bovine dairy after consuming lifelong, then their lactase stores will become obsolete due to the gene control chain. In the body, it's wasteful to code for enzymes to break down lactose since it's not glucose. Therefore, the body will turn off genes (MCM6 and LCT) that signal lactase when concentration of lactose is low.

If you paid attention to what you eat you wouldn't be eating dairy accidently. And yes, that's a thing. People who stop drinking milk will become intolerant to dairy over time because they lose the enzymes to digest it.

Love all your videos, you are an inspiration and a fantastic apologist for veganism. One possiblel error I saw on this one though was when you said that animal agriculture was more responsible for waterway impairment by a factor of 2 than the next leading source, the study said "agriculture" and a lot of that comes from the runoff of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers that are used on crops that are destined to feed humans...I know a lot of it goes to feed animals that are fed to feed humans too. I hope you keep going, man, I am and will continue to support your efforts.

Man, people are fucked up in the head! Saying "humanness" produces the best flavor is something a psychopath would say! It's a baby cow you sociopath! Even when I wasn't veggie or vegan I still had a problem with eating baby cows! Looking back I feel so much shame and guilt for eating veal, but I felt that shame too at the time I did it. I never tried to justify it or say psychopathic things like that guy is saying.

I'm not surprised when farmers say things like that. I was messaging one on instagram for a couple months and she was definitely insane. She said she doesn't feel bad when she kills a baby cow for veal, and that they lived a "full life". She didn't even have any shame in killing them and proudly posted about how delicious some family-farmed baby cow flesh is! gross.

Started being a vegetarian after I completed the Appalachian Trail in April. After 6 weeks I feel wonderful. I eat mostly vegan now but will have an egg and or feta cheese when I go out to a restaurant, maybe once a week, and if that's the only choice. My problem is the whole argument of all or nothing. People do it all he time. How about we focus of getting a little better every week. Forget the titles, an organic whole plant food diet is the goal. Just try to reach it with every dietary decision you make. Just my thoughts.

Most of your arguments seem pretty reasonable/valid to me , but personally , I do not think that the thing with eggs really applies to me. I am a vegetarian and we have hens ourselves :) we do not have a cock , so no egg is being fertilised and also we do not feed them any hormones or antibiotics (they do get medicine when they are ill which happens very very rarely). To me , it's sort of a give-and-take basis. We give them a home and food , even when they get old and stop laying any eggs. We get eggs from them- a hen lays an egg like every other day , not every day and in the winter months , they sometimes don't lay any eggs at all. (Somebody explained this to me, I believe it was because they need a certain amount of sun light for the hormones in their bodies to be activated ) I hope I didn't forget anything :) Ps. I am not a native english speaker so please ignore any mistakes ^^ Sending love from germany💚💚

I have been entranced by your videos. I was a vegetarian that moved on to veganism in 2007 and started having health problems and then eventually gave it up believing that my blood pressure, chronic pain and skin problems where resulting from a raw vegan diet. Generally, I am still a low meat consumer but I have had a host of problems develop. I wish I would have seen your videos because they could have given me more purpose and hope and saved me a ton of health problems since I have returned to meat. I blamed my failure on the diet but it was not a proper vegan diet. I primarily ate a small selection of foods and refused to take supplements because veganism (in any form) was a perfect diet. I learned that the joy and the important elements of veganism is variety and that supplements are needed as a herbivore or omnivore. Since returning to omnivore diet, I eat fewer calories and I am 100 lbs over weight. I just had 31 (thirty-one) tumors removed from me and I am positive this has come from my consumption of dairy. I used to be all energy all the time and now I am always tired and hungry. As I sit here recovering from my recent surgery (tumors) I feel like a fool for ever giving up being a plant based consumer. I dont want to suffer the issues I have anymore and as a result I am trying to move back into veganism. I really appreciate the time you take in your research and braving all of the hostility and judgement to make your videos. They are very informative and helped me identify my errors. Thank you so much. I hope my next message will be praising how much a vegan diet has improved my health and my life. I think it is definitely possible because people like you and putting so much information out there. I only wish you guys were active from 2005 - 2007

I wonder how many children than grow up in cannibalistic societies become vegan? It is much easier to just eat the way your family ate and not think about it. It takes effort to become and stay vegan. I was veg for 20 years and not vegan for the last 25. I'm 72, active, no meds, and enjoying life. Let's consider what would happen if the entire country went vegan 6 days a week. That would be an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, water use, feces production, etc, etc etc! Plus with around 3000 people dying every day from heart attacks and strokes, that would be serious reduced. And you still get to eat some meat/dairy so you don't have to feel deprived. I have to say that the meat/dairy alternatives just keep getting better and better. When we make short term choices with long term consequences, we should not be surprised that we end up somewhere very unpleasant, polluted, lifeless, cruel, and/or threatening. Nature rewards adaptability which we have in abundance but humans do not value wisdom, and that will cause great death and extinction if we don't wake up soon!
@renarddubois940
@renarddubois940 6 лет назад
Well the animals could actually not be exploited anymore.. that would be better.. We just need to make sure ppl can't feel deprived.. for example, if they've never tasted it.. Creating a world in which it is abuse to give animal products to children for example would prevent them to feel hungry and angry if they decide to choose the ethical choice later on despite LOVING the taste of animal products.. I am a vegan that was forced to love animal products as a child, so yes I consider it abuse because veganism has never been a choice for me, it's a moral imperative.. If I eat animal products, i'll be pissed at the world and if I don't I'm still pissed.. so there is no win, I'll just be pissed no matter what because my parents decided to force dead juice and cadavers down my throat when I was innocent and unable to stand up for my principles (which I already have)

That’s me, the omnivore that sees the health benefits (this is Ashli) for females especially Black females! I’m just starting to see the benefits of the animals care. AND as one of the main tweeters that helped take down Sea World after Black Fish came out, I feel a little hypocritical caring so much about the baby orcas and not at all about the chicks and calves. I have started my vegan journey again (I only ended it because of cultural and peer pressure from family/ friends). The pressure from your close peoples really starts to get to you. But I will be stronger this time because I truly feel better inside and out when I eat a fully vegan diet/ lifestyle.

Again, what? Go do some research first before typing. Commercial organic crops USE pesticides and herbicides much in the same way that conventional crops do. The only difference is that they are supposedly from "natural" sources. Also from all the pollution and planes dropping poison, it doesn't matter anymore. The only good thing about organic is crop rotation. The whole thing is a lie. Do you want REAL organic food? If you said yes then you better be growing your own food in a greenhouse/garden etc.

Today marks one year for me being vegetarian. I did it because meat started to look and feel revolting to me. My cognitive dissonance faded to the fact that the chicken on my plate was once the same as the chickens I see at farms. Last week I watched the Documentary "Forks Over Knives" and knew I needed to do more. I found your RU-vid channel and honestly it makes me feel bad. I feel bad that I didn't know this information earlier in my journey. Being Vegan is truly the life I want and need to live. So today on my one year anniversary I am officially turning vegan.

I'm vegan but there are actually ethical dairy production in India in cow sanctuaries. Cows and bulls are accepted there at any age, They naturally get impregnated, only the excess milk (milked by hand and not machines) is taken from the cow (Cows can get udder infections if the calf doesn't drink all the milk) and sold to people on a non profit basis to only fund the fund food for the cows. The only reason I'm against that is because cows are kept away from their natural habitat even if they are free to roam around and that's bad for the environment. On top of that milk isn't healthy and hygiene standards are poor.

vidhan matolia exploitation is not ethical. Cows milk is not produced for humans, so if humans collect and sell it then it is exploitation.
@vidhanmatolia4734
@vidhanmatolia4734 8 лет назад
Ray V it's not really exploitation here since cows aren't being bred for the sole purpose of being milked. Sure cows don't produce milk for you but it's the excess milk that's being taken which is a waste anyway. Cows still have to be milk because we bred them to produce more milk but there's no going back from that now. Milking the cows for excess milk isn't exploitation just like using your dog's poop as manure in your garden isn't exploitation.

The male calves get to stay too? If so, I don't really see an ethical problem with that, but it would be absolutely impossible to employ on a large enough scale to feed the population's demand for dairy products.

You make some great points in this video, however, it would be awesome if you could make a video on ethical plant based consumption. Especially if you could touch upon how it could be (or isn't) more accessible to various groups. Like, yes, bad things are happening to animals through these factory farms, (but there is ethical meat, which is why I like how you pointed out the health benefits of being vegan), but there are also bad things happening to humans who work on farms. I don't want to get too graphic in this comment about what kind of things happen, but I'd love to have a discussion if you want to know more.

I am so happy to say that after many years of being vegetarian I have gone back to being Vegan and I feel so much better emotionally. I did not expect this to be one of the benefits. I am horrified about my contribution to the dairy industry all this time. All it took was being reminded of why I went Vegan in the 90s to begin with (animal cruelty). I read the book "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins. Then about 2 months ago I watched the video "Best Speech You Will Ever Hear - Gary Yourofsky." I thought I was going to throw up knowing that I knew the facts and changed to vegetarianism. Not anymore! And my conviction is so strong that I truly don't crave or feel deprived of foods or desserts made with dairy. As strong as I would never eat cows, chickens, etc... This is a very important video! If u want to go Vegetarian for a couple weeks before going all the way to Vegan to not shock ur body or your current groceries fine, but DON'T stop there. Supporting the dairy and egg industry is possibly worse than having a steak.

I personally am a plant based individual. I eat predominantly plants but also consume fish. Also, my mom raises chickens and they are amazing. We play with them and cuddle them. They all have names and personalities. They are fed left over produce daily and have an insulated + heated coop (they're spoiled ❤️). I have no issue with eating their eggs. It makes me feel bonded to them. We are in a cooperative hobby farm community (thats Small town midwesterners for you) that is based off of trade. If we hatch babies and they turn out to be boys, we trade them with a guys down the street for some feed and he breeds more chickens with the boys. Nobody we trade with consumes the meat. It's all hobby farming and most consider them "pets". You CAN be ethical and eat certain products. We wanted chickens as pets, eggs were a side effect of that.

Ello mate, I'm currently in the transitioning phase myself (currently a VEGan, never knew there was such a thing!) and I have been still just about managing to convince myself that eating eggs (from a local farm where the chickens clearly are treated really well - with the now obvious exception of having to bare the daily hardship of birth giving and spouse killing) could be ethically and health-wise justified but alas, NO! Sometimes a brother needs reminding of what he really knew deep down. Anyway, I really appreciate your videos, it's taken me too long to really move forward with veganism but your vids have helped to motivate me and now I'm all over this shit! God Bless, Thanks Again
