I watch a few garden channels on RU-vid, but I have to say you flowers are the most healthy, gorgeous. One thing stands out is how you put your flowers 💐 together they are absolutely beautiful. I'm a old lady that loves and know flower. God bless you and your husband. Thank you for all your hard work with your love of flowers.

I’m envious of that beautiful black soil you have! I think you may have started a new fashion trend with those boots🥾! LOL!!!

Your a hard worker & using that brain between your ears, (so many don't). You've done a better job on this than the advice below would have had you doing. The grass is always an issue as it likes a lot water. When I started my gardening business I worked at the weekend for a couple of years so I could take a day out in the week to study horticulture at college - learnt more in that 2 years than I would of in a lifetime of hard knocks, it was very empowering.

I have forsythia and they are beautiful when they bloom in the spring. They are so easy to propagate too via cuttings. They grow like crazy and don’t seem to mind heavy pruning every year so they would definitely be great as cut flowers.

That’s great to know re. Cuttings. I will have to give that a go. Looking forward to seeing the sunny flowers in spring!

I have about 300 forsythia cuttings right now, waiting to be potted up this spring, to join about 200 2nd year forsythia plants! They are SO easy!

A wonderful thing is panicle hydrangeas for cutting I use lime light and the bloom on new wood and can be pruned or cut quite hard also elderberry is a good one for birds and you can eat the berries as well

Spot on with the regenerative farming - it's traditional farming really! I'm doing nothing here that my granddad wouldn't have done. Your hedge will look great and you can use that forsythia will looking amazing in spring.

Yes I hope so! We have some on the farm already and I also love the red leaves in autumn 🍂

@@bloomandgray I have none so I've been putting in some along a new fence line, along with flower current, some fruit, eucalyptus etc in a bid to make an attractive but also useful barrier. Crazy weather ... I was in a tee the other day too! Not used to that in January. Happy growing 😀

Great to have something for wildlife as well, hoping that shading won’t become an issue for the flowers, especially with the oaks, but. I guess they are slow growing ! Have planted a wildlife hedge on a community plot and we just made t-shape slits and put the bare roots in.

Definitely just do slit planting, No need to dig trenches.. but maybe your hedge plants should have been in 2 rows 1ft apart, and 1 ft between each plant, hence 6 plants per metre. 16cm is very tight planting indeed ( sorry, laid many hedges so ) but brill you're planting a new hedge. Hornbeam is so vigorous, oak is slow so bare that in mind when pruning

Great to have that wind protection. I’m on the coast and just one storm can ruin months of growing. You’re really getting sorted now.

Oh gosh Sarah, I remember being that young and fit. I feel your pain after an hours gardening! 😂 I’m sure slit planting will work fine. The benefits for birds and wildlife will definitely make it worthwhile. It makes me sad to see old hedgerows being ripped out, so this was great. X

Looks great! I’ve never heard of some of these varieties, I’ll have to look them up. I’m doing a similar thing in my garden. Between the vegetable garden fence and the neighbor’s horse pasture fence I have an area approximately 3-4 foot wide. I’m sowing seeds to attract birds and butterflies, specifically Monarchs. Milkweed will be the prominent variety. Last year I found so many seeds and I can’t wait to start. Here in western North Carolina, we are still digging out from nine inches of snow, so it will be a while before I can start. 🥶 I love your farm and the inspiration you give! Thank you! 🌾

Hi Angela, that sounds great. It will be lovely to see the butterflies there in summer! I’ve had a few comments from people who are still under snow! I can’t imagine not being able to do anything to prepare and waiting for the snow to melt! Although it would be nice if we could have a little bit!

Hi, Sarah! Great idea for a useful border. Well done. I'm in the regenerative flower farmers group and was stoked to see you in the chat. (I live 1.5 hrs north of Jenny Love's farm). I just got The Living Soil Handbook by Jesse Frost - it's great.

The wildlife will love living there, I'm sure they'll keep the pests cleaned up too. Maybe you know the Forsythia can forced indoors as well, so you could have that for bouquets, I'm not that familiar with the others tho. I felt your pain when you said a foot deep, I don't know what 35 meters equals in feet but it looks pretty darn long.

What seedlings do you have started already? Do you only do soil blocking? I'm in the US and we mostly use trays, but I'm looking into switching over to soil blocks. Love your content! Thank you
@bloomandgray
@bloomandgray 2 года назад
I have started a few things as an experiment to test peat free compost vs my usual peat based compost, but I won’t start the main bulk of sowing til after mid February. I only use soil blocks for certain seeds, but use trays mostly.

They are very close together but that is the planting advice! In hindsight I would have perhaps spaced them a little further apart to allow them to grow to a larger size but we will just have to wait and see. First time hedge planting here!
