Hi, I'm Sarah, a flower farmer in East Yorkshire, UK. I've been farming since 2017, expanding over the years onto half an acre.
I sell flowers to locals in the form of subscription bouquets, one-off bouquets, honesty box sales, workshops and wedding flowers. I love sharing the highs and lows, experiments, successes and failures of it all here on RU-vid.
Through the summer months you can expect harvesting and flower arranging videos, farm tours and other things i'm up to.
I'm extremely passionate about farming regeneratively so you will also get content on worm farming, cover crops, composting and insights into soil microbiology.
The end of an era…

are you accounting for temperature when choosing the length of time for the brew? 24 hours is a baseline dependent on ambient room temp. if it's much hotter then the microbiology will multiply much faster, if it's colder then reproduction will be much slower. brewing time can be as little as 6 hours if it's extremely hot out.

I have an honest question - why don't you save seeds? Do you find they are cross pollinated too often?

Subject: Query Regarding Worm Activity in Johnson-Su Bioreactor Dear Sarah, I recently watched your video on the Johnson-Su Bioreactor and found it incredibly insightful. I’ve been maintaining worm farms for many years, and from my experience, red wigglers typically operate within the top 150mm to 200mm of material. While I have noticed that they occasionally go deeper, it seems that you are expecting them to burrow down as far as 1 to 1.5 meters in the bioreactor. I’m curious about how much of a role the worms actually play at such depths. Do you believe that their activity significantly contributes to the composting process at these levels, or is the composting primarily due to other factors? Thank you for your informative content, and I look forward to your thoughts on this matter. Best regards, Cliff

I have always wondered why you Brits use the short form of 'O' when you say compost, but the long form when you say post, as in signpost. Edit 2 add: I run my compost through my worm bin. I make compost faster than the worms can process it, so I always have extra for top dressing my garden. Also, I like to add a few cups of Neem-seed meal, kelp meal, and alfalfa meal to my worm bin for a more nutritionally rounded casting.

Years ago I was hired by the National trust to cull the rabbits of a tenant farm in cheshire that adjoined several tenant cottages, the rabbits were destroying £1000’s in mixed crop. On the evening of the very safe and regulated shoot, the city working (and rurally clueless) cottagers came out and confronted me, said I was cruel and heartless and the rabbits were lovely, banged pots and pans to keep the rabbits out of our sights, so we packed up and went home. Two weeks later I had one of the cottagers banging on my front door (I lived in the same village) demanding that I get rid of the rabbits immediately as they had got into their garden and eaten £100’s of B&Q bought plants and flowers 😂. Incidentally, this same person moved next to a farm that had been there for hundreds of years then put a complaint in to the national trust that the farmers tractor and cows were too loud! Thoughts: 1.Rabbits are cute but incredibly destructive, quick and sudden “lead poisoning” is the most humane. 2.People are stupid. 3.Don’t give up, you make a difference to more people than you realise. 4.You’ve got this! 💪

Micro flower farmer for a few years however back pain and osteoarthritis along my spine prevented me from starting any seeds this year. No lie it’s depressing, by this time snapdragons, dahlias and zinnias should’ve started blooming. Hopefully next year will be better for us who’ve struggled this year

Hello Sarah! If you have the opportunity, please tell us a little about the taxes you pay for your business. If possible, very briefly, just a few words. I am interested in this topic regarding your country. I live in a country with a dictatorial regime and our small businesses are crushed. The government demands very high taxes. You are an incredible hard worker and talent. I envy you. Your story amazed me. I wish you success🌻

We've had problem with fox early one morning and then at dusk with badgers, who scared the chickens badly rather than kill, so we now don't let them out earlier than about 8 am (current North Yorkshire High Summer Time) and then bribe them into the shed well before dusk with mealworms (which they used to get mid afternoon) , or earlier if we are going out for evening. Don't think you can 'train" them to go to bed early, only bribery works! You look as if you have quite a lot of chickens so mealworms are going to be expensive bribe ! (we now only have 2 chickies currently) . Hope all goes well for you, it's been such a cold year in the UK this year, next year will be better!

I think the best idea is to get a dog and let him inside the area of flowers. even if he will brok some of the flowers (maybe 5%) you will don't have any animals go inside. Trust me! I have the same problem here in Canada with animals.
