Not Saint Petersburg, Russia. Just to clarify. Although, if you want to meet up with nerdfighters in Saint Petersburg, Russia... maybe there will be a meetup on Jan 1? if I will have enough energy to organise it, and if there will be enough people, that is.
My 13 y/o step granddaughter asked me a while ago how bad could it really be. So I told her the truth, best, worst and more likely. Mainly I talked to her about the social horrors climate change could unleash. She asked me to find her a martial arts class, and to teach her survival techniques (at 41 I’ve lived a LOT in 4 decades so amongst other things I actually have significant survival training.) I’m insanely proud of her for not just taking it all in as an adult and asking for help in personal preparation. But also because she gave me a hug at the end and told me that it’s not my fault... I know that saying that the children are the future is a cliche, but when I look at her and her 15 y/o cousin all I can think is how frakking badass they are.
Trump did nothing wrong. And framing things to sound like he did is what’s worrying. There is NO evidence of wrongdoing. I respect you and I’ve been subbed to you for years, but I would have thought you of all people SHOULD be telling your followers to look at the facts. They’re smart enough to handle them. Thank you for being awesome. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
@@tanmaydarade4556 alright i guess I must have missed some big news, I admit I haven’t been reading the news as much lately, but big things tend to get mentioned other ways so I just assumed 😅 My bad! (Also if you aren’t thinking about something thats big internationally, I probably have a lesser chance of knowing since I’m a Swede)
RU-vid really wants me to rewatch this New Years Day 2021. "I don't want to worry you, but it could always be worse" understatement of the year...maybe the decade
"Also, we just impeached our president about the fact that he doesn't have a great deal of respect for the [election] process." Another quote that fits today *very* well. History repeats itself, I guess... or maybe a saying that better fits this scenario is "People don't change."
“Worrying isn’t a disease, it’s a symptom of caring.” Well, now, I have to deal with the fact that I can’t highlight a video like I could a book bc that hit me.
Every time I come across somethin like this (which happens often in a vlogbrothers video) I write it down in my notes, either on my phone or physically. Got many gems to look back on ;)
Literally me too, my family always tell me I should have gotten my degree in worrying and it’s true, I overthink everything and worry myself sick, and hearing that sentence come from hanks mouth made me start crying at a bus stop.
What are you talking about?! These videos literally help the whole world get better. I find hope, positivity, and direction after watching perfectly worded videos like these! I'm not the only one who's life trajectory will take slightly more mindful turns now, I hope.
considering my teen years were mostly contained in the 20-teens, i am particularly worried about the 2020s because... i’ll be an adult. college?? marriage?? the workforce??? a HOUSE???
In the last ten years I graduated college, became a teacher, got married, bought a house, made two long distance moves ,had a kid and have another one cooking. Lol I see what you mean.
Noelle H. Just take it one moment at a time. If I could relive that time of my life again, I'd plan for the future, but be sure to be grateful in the moments. And don't be afraid of making mistakes.
@@ianstewart-vital who might that be ? Trump isnt great, but when it comes to Syria, you dodged a bullet, Hillary would have leveled that country, Like Libya and Iraq....
@@Night-rage Trump has been terrible on Syria. Helping Turkey invade, and the redeployng the troops preventing that to the Syrian oil fields which he openly admitted was just a move to take Syrian oil (a warcrime, btw) for example. Just because Hillary would also have been terrible on something doesn't mean Trump is good. As for "who"...if you notice, Hillary isn't running, and someone with an active history of opposition to her politics is currently polling in the #2 slot and rising.
@@dynamicworlds1 You have a point, he isn't helping. But still a real war with Syria, overtrowing Assad so that jihadist can take over, like Libya/Iraq still sounds like a step worse if you ask me. I really hope Bernie or Tulsi gets elected and will stop needless wars, but I don't think they will allow that. Trump has admited that when it comes to war, the military industrial complex is in charge, not him.
As someone who suffers from anxiety, “worry” seems like no big deal. Worry to me means that you’ve actually identified the problem and that means we can strategize and start working on it.
Oh boy there are so many problems you can pin point and still do nothing about! I’d list you all the things you have no control over, but this is MY panic attack and not yours 😂
“we just impeached our president about the fact that he doesn’t have a great deal of respect about the process” hey i think i’ve heard this one before!
Who is watching this during this pandemic? 3 months in and this year has been so much fun 🙃. Hey, do you remember how we almost entered WW3, the Australian fires, the flooding in the UK? No doubt there was more that already happened this year but our minds are wondering around this uncertainty that has afflicted society. I hope everyone reading this is doing okay 💜
If it aint a mess, it'l do til the mess gets here. For a little distraction, you may enjoy seeing a rescue of a hawk wrapped up by a huge king snake at my place. Hope you are safe and well.
“... how we choose to imagine the world all of those thing are how the entire human earth gets built. So yes, I’m worried for the future, and yes, I’m glad” “And also, worry almost always works best hand in hand with hope”
The future is the most comforting terrifying thing that doesn’t exist, which is why when things change we all freak out. We’re really bad at anticipating repercussions.
1:46 "There is somewhat of a tendency to say 2019 was such a trashy year, there is no way 2020 could be worse... but it could always be worse" Hank, I really, really hope that won't be true for 2021!
BWA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!! We had NO f***ing idea!!!!!!! BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!! 2019 was a pretty trash year?!!! Yeah right!!!! We were so clueless!!!! 🤣 *Laughter turns to sobbing* 😭😭😭
Benji Reil I like that quote better than the “worry is a symptom of caring one,” because I have anxiety and it often makes me wish I were dead so if that’s just caring then I’d like to stop. But the one about hope makes me feel like it won’t always be that way and one day I’ll be able to worry healthier.
A year and a week later. We made it. Welcome to 2021, nothing to be worried about 2020 any more. Here's to holding onto hope and helping each other have a better year.
This video showed up in my suggestions today. Almost 10 months later. I think it's safe to say that Hank had NO idea what 2020 would bring, but he still managed to somehow hit the basics. 2020 has definitely been a thing of worry...
This video just came up as recommended and I scrolled through and saw the comment that I made last year at this time about being stressed out. I made that comment while sitting in the Sea-Tac Airport with my little brother being stressed cuz our flight got delayed by several hours. In hindsight things were so good. I got a peppermint mocha, he was napping, and I was listening to announcements making sure we didn’t miss our plane. God what a simpler time, I miss it now. I miss being most stressed about not getting a flight, as opposed to death by pandemic level viral pathogens. I miss being able to hug people. Man the world changed so much.
So I somehow ended up watching this at the beginning of 2021, not the end of 2019. This was profound. "It can always get worse!" Was so spot on! Hank, please predict happy things since you seem to be fairly accurate. Waiting for the benevolent superior fish beings.
That one second when you go "Yes!! I am in St. Petersburg!...Russia" Thank you for the video, Hank, a beautiful way to end the decade and start a new one! And Happy New Year to all you nerdfighters, may 2020 be full of meaning and love!
even though I've heard them talk about st petersburg several times this month my heart still skips a beat at every mention of st petersburg because for one second I believe they're talking about st petersburg in russia (where i am) and not the florida one (on the other side of the world)
@@Suppameen that is a giant mood. As I'm waiting for the flight there to go home for New Year holidays I am waaaay too attuned to every mention of Saint Petersburg (:
Hey, pals. Everyone who is reading this comment and is from Saint Petersburg, RUSSIA. How about we meet up somewhere in the city centre on January 1st for a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate? Bring your own thermos, if you can! (any suggestions welcome, you can find me on VK as rena_tika and on Twitter as @rewritetimeline)
Hi, Hank. And also possibly John. I am from Russia. Thank you for calling out our country on shit our government is doing wrong. I recognise that there's a lot of stuff that's actually happening (like, Kremlin bots, I think) that is having a negative effect. And yet I still have a sting of "this is unfair!" whenever you mention Russia. I just wanted to let you know that, I guess. I'll be fine, btw. I'm almost used to it by now. And life is suffering, anyway :) But, just as a message to the Nerdfighteria: please, imagine Russians (and twitter bots) complexly. (okay, now I need to finish watching the video)
Every powerful country tries to either vassalize or sabotage every other powerful country -- & since the cold war, the latter strategy has mostly happened via public manipulation. Thus Russian bots. And American bots. And Chinese bots. etc. We focus so heavily on Russian bots because those are the one that the public is most conscious of & the ones that we have the most tangible evidence of causing real harm. But they're definitely not the only ones at work.
Don't worry about it. The whole Russian interference thing is mostly just the left in the US looking for an excuse to deny existence of legitimate concerns of conservatives. Russia didn't make us do anything we didn't want to do. Yes, California is on fire. Yes, illegal immigrants can't invade the country any time they want anymore. But also, unemployment is down, wages are up, the stock market is up, there's a new North American trade deal, and trade with China is more fair than it used to be. We also still get to keep our rights guaranteed by the Constitution a little longer with out having fight in a civil war to maintain them. So Orange Man Bad, but life is good.
@@MethosOhio That's maybe too simplistic of a way to look at it. Sorry for the long post: Tl;dr, conditioning doesn't work that way. I mean, there's a reason governments spend billions of dollars on this kind of activity, & it's the same reason companies spend billions of dollars on advertising. If I can influence your experiences (that is, if I can strategically expose you to specific content or ideas), then I can subtly influence the way your brain works. And if I can do that over a very long period of time, then I can condition you to think in a certain way or behave in a certain way that feels natural to you. As a simple example, you & I are pretty strongly conditioned to express ourselves in internet comments sections. Now, objectively, there's no reason to do this. It's not going affect anything. Nobody is walking away with sage wisdom or a changed perspective. We will all forget each & every one of these throwaway interactions which have a sum total of exactly 0 value. And yet, we do it anyway, because we have been conditioned for more than a decade to behave in this way by various subtle social media reward systems -- so we seek it out as automatically as we would seek out good tasting food or sexual pleasure. And it doesn't matter if you know about it or not -- the conditioning is already there. At that point it's kind of like trying to take the cream out of a cup of coffee after you've already mixed it in. That's the point of these kinds of government campaigns -- to condition people to have certain automatic reactions or mindsets over a very long period of time... If your goal is to destabalize a country, maybe you want to condition conservative people to be more conservative & liberal people to be more liberal for example. Again, you have all the time in the world, so it can be as subtle as you want.
I'm here from April 27, 2020... you were right to worry. It's shaky. And it will get better. That's my bet. But, maybe not before it gets more ... worrisome.
@@pendlera2959 My main source was is a recent video where he talked about refusing to engage in social media. It might literally be titled something about that.
I’m sitting here watching like the fourth of your video so far and it finally just CLICKED as to why you looked so familiar to me, it’s like watching history videos by John Green in class but just a lot chiller
Wow. Some how, just like Hank predicted, 2020 is A LOT worse than 2019. So weird to come see this video now, to back when nobody knew that the entire world would be flipped upside down like this
*Bernie 2020!* What other candidate can save the life of a suicidal veteran while running one of the busiest campaign schedules of any candidate? m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y4sQ_DsXbG4.html
This aged well 😂😂😂 I love Vlogbrothers. It’s been a constant in my life while everything else has changed...seeing me through high school, college, getting married, teaching abroad, 2 kids...and I still look forward to each of these videos. Thank you for your thought provoking, inspiring, encouraging, authentic content. #rightinthefeelseachtime
This came up in my recommended and I'll be using it to propel me in 2021. While there was a lot of cause for worry in 2020, I think it gave me a lot of perspective about what truly matters to me, including the importance of kindness to myself and others. I think it's fair to say 2021 will also suck as we continue to endure the effects of climate change and political unrest and racial injustice, nevermind the global pandemic. But knowing this rather than dwelling on unknowns is somehow comforting to me. Knowing that I've dealt with this before. I hope we all take what we learn from 2020 to do the best we can in 2021.
Watching this video in March 2020, early days of COVID-19 pandemic: I hate to say it but Hank you were entirely too right when you said things could get worse.
Hank, you mentioned Raleigh and my worry evolved towards excitement until settling in disappointment at seeing 'Sold Out'. I hope that you will come again soon. I'm happy you guys have such a strong following 😊
Me: *having an anxiety-filled existential crisis* I should go on RU-vid to make myself feel better. *Sees this vlogbrothers video* Hank usually has a healthy and realistic dose of optimism to offer. Me after watching said video: I have made a terrible mistake.
It actually took me 3 months to get around to watching this (I save videos in my watch later list the same way I pile up books to read) and watching this from 2020, when yes, things got worse.
