Making the things to make the things to make the things. Having recently taken up leatherworking, I need a riveting hammer. Of course I could just buy one, but where would the fun be in that? Craft is so much more about the process than the product. So today we are going to warm up the anvil, light up the forge, and turn some 4140 tool steel into a leather working hammer. We'll forge the hammer, we'll heat treat the steel, polish the faces, and then we'll hang the hammer head on a hand carved oak handle.

MORE ABOUT ME
I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable."
I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break and build the things I need.
8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
My goal is to learn and share traditional techniques and skills while showing my peers how to get from where they are to where they want to go, how to do the things they are passionate about, and what can be done TODAY to engage their own community and grow deep roots.
Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, restoring my antique truck or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support - whether financially through Patreon, through shopping my affiliate links, through buying merchandise, plans or project videos, or even just liking, commenting, and sharing my content with others helps me GREATLY to keep producing quality content to share.

Hey Annie. Been a while. Been goin through some things. Happy to be back. An as a 15yr blacksmith and 3 yr chainsaw carver, I never thought you could make me prouder. I’m getting caught up on all you’ve been up too, and I’m beside myself happy and proud. I’ve been in a dark spot for a while now. You really are proving that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Oh, an don’t bend your wrist so much when you strike. You’ll end up like me and the other ferries.😂 ❤from the north!

Stumbled on to your video. Great stuff you speak like my brain. I was diagnosed with add a few years ago. And my doctor recommended finding an outlet for my creative. When i was a younger man i was alwas making thing in the garage wood shop. And loved acting. I can proudle say 2 years later 2 plays "hamlet and Mother Courage and her children" incase anyone was wondering. And several knives and forge made jewelry later. And i fell more centered and fulfilled than i have in the last 20 years. Great stuff y i your sharing. Keep on Making.

Before I even watch this after watching the intro - Anne, you give me hope and shine a little light inside me every time I watch one of your videos. Your ethos, that sort of thinking/believe is SO lacking in the world today, it's all about the profit and how much we can make, as fast as we can make it and as cheaply. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Oh and that's a sweet looking bag you've got there in the making, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Career blacksmith here (27 years smithing)... Absolutely NEVER quench in motor oil...first its sloooow slower than an air quench ..second contrary to popular myth it doesn't add any carbon to the steel at all ... Third its extremely toxic... 4140 is a medium speed quenching steel ideally it should be quenched in a 11-14 second oil (for DIY'ERS use peanut or canola oil pre heated to 130 degrees) in thick cross sections water can be used but quenching 4140 hammer heads in water can cause cracking in the thin steel cheeks around the eye
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 2 года назад
All good to know! The motor oil, water (and quench can/bucket) were very much a “use what you’ve got on hand at this exact moment” solution as I’m still getting my shop set back up after moving across the country, but I’m waiting on parts for my ammo can peanut oil heater as we speak :)
@jessebond4221
@jessebond4221 2 года назад
@@AnneofAllTrades for small parts you can use a cheap 1 gallon paint can preheated with a piece of mild you heated in the forge ...personally i just use a 5 gallon bucket ...if you plan on working a wide range of steels definitely invest in engineered quenching oils they dont break down like food oils and will match the speed of quench you need for the alloy you are working
