Dude the viiiibes!!! I don’t know if it’s because the food quality is trash in America, but just breathing the air in Mexico feels better to me. I just see more smiles here than anywhere else.
I visited Mexico City in Dec, and I speak minimal Spanish. I have to say it is pretty difficult to communicate without Spanish. You might meet that one or two youngish person who understands English but besides that it’s important to know how to speak Spanish to get around.
I recall in one of your other vlogs about geoarbitrage--retirees who find it difficult to get by where they lived and move to a foreign country. Not saying you're a retiree, but to go somewhere else where you can live (and not survive) is a good move for what you mentioned. Cheaper cost of living, less stress and close to home are all excellent reasons to begin a new life. And if things change moving back isn't a problem. At least you gave it a chance. For me, I am retiring this year and moving to the Philippines. To prepare I made sure my passport is current, I opened up a Charles Schwab account (they don't charge ATM fees when you're in a foreign country) and I let go of things I couldn't take with me that would hold me back. Keep us updated and enjoy the opportunities life has to offer.
I loved my trip to Mexico City years back, for many of the same reasons you mentioned. It’s validating to see that a practically minded person agrees with me. It seems like a well kept secret! Have fun in your time there!

I hope you end up liking it in Mexico City long term. It would be good to create content about the trade off of moving from the US to Mexico. This video only looks at the good you see in Mexico, but there’s always a trade off. Another commenter already mentioned safety so I won’t go too deep into it. As a single child-free woman, I’d like to see content about safety considerations. I don’t like all-rosie content because that’s not real life. As a latina who moved to the US, my financial freedom includes having a nice place in the US with lots of safety. I rooted my whole life in the pursue of safety.

Hi Rose! Glad to hear you are having a great experience in CDMX. I have a couple of questions about living there: 1. How safe do you feel on the streets/train? Women being kidnapped in Mexico isn’t uncommon. 2. How is the political scene? I heard the President isn’t too great (the US had its history with not so great presidents either) 3. Do you think some vendors have sold their products to you at a higher price just because you’re a foreigner ? If anyone else have answers to these questions, feel free to reply!
As long as you stay away from Iztapalapa, Neza and Ecatepec you will be fine, specially if you stay in the nice locations that Rose is describing (Polanco, Del Valle, Condesa, Roma and several others).
Thanks Karen! 1. In most of the neighborhoods, I feel very safe. Although I don't walk alone on the streets after midnight, and always take precautions when it's dark (looking around, being aware of surroundings, avoiding dark isolated streets). 2. Indeed the political scene is not that different from the U.S., albeit way more corrupt. Lots of people don't like the President right now. He's a populist and like in many other countries, there's a lot of room for improvement. 3. I've experienced this in other countries, like in Kenya, but not here. Most things have a sticker price anyway. And street vendors haven't marked up their prices to me because they charge the same to locals... at least as far as I can tell
I'm a New Yorker, born and raised, and while I don't want to leave now, I definitely rather retire somewhere else. Like out of the country. The high costs of homes, rent and crappy health care system are reasons alone to leave. I'm also single, no kids and rather have fun and travel now while I can. Wish you so much luck!
Beware of earthquakes in Mexico City. It was built over an ancient lake bed, so shaking is amplified. So many buildings simply fell in the last recent earthquake.
Indeed - you need to be careful of what building you decide to live in. If it's earthquake-safe, you're going to be ok. Unfortunately when Mother Nature chooses to strike, it's completely out of our hands, wherever you live.
@keith you should search for Chile's earth quakes, the ones in Mexico city are NOTHING compare to Chile but the funny thing is that the constructions in Chile are so safe that people at airports restaurants and coffee shops don't even bother to evacuate the places and just try make sure their coffee doesn't spill with the strong Earth movements 🤣🤣🤣
It's nice but as a foreigner with extreme financial wealth, moving to a city with low cost of living is overall hell to the locals because of gentrification. The dollar is worth significantly more in Mexico and if more foreigners move there, it'll drive up prices and turn it into a touristy area effectively pushing out all the locals that live there.
I have to agree. And the fact that she is spreading the idea of gentrification in Mexico City on such a large platform is worrying. Mexico City is already experiencing crazy rising rents because of so many digital nomads taking over the city (esp during the pandemic), and spreading awareness and encouraging others (other Americans) to gentrify Mexico is troubling.
Living in Mexico City is expensive not because of foreigners but because a lack of housing. I'm almost sure that any property she buys is out of the range of what most people in Mexico City can afford. Foreigners are not displacing anyone.
Gentrification is an issue, but I don't think that the city has enough foreigner to do that, airbnb is probably worse. The only issue I have with foreigners is that sometimes they don't pay income taxes. Like at least pay your taxes if you are gonna live here, it's not like you can't afford it.
Great video Rose and I totally agree with you, living here in the US blowing your wealth or a mortgage is not the American dream. Plus the weather blows unless I'm back home in San Diego which is too expensive, why I left. I've been considering Mexico (I've lived there before) and Asia. Quality of life, being happy, decent weather and saving a lot of money are important to me. Thanks again!

I'm from Mexico and so happy people from all over the world want to live in mexico . I own a house in Michoacan but I live in the USA right now but eventually I want to move back and enjoy my retirement.

Be very cautious. You advertise your wealth and solo living status. Do not advertise your location. I was raised in Latin America and despite security, we had break-ins. It was wonderful, and I'd do it again, just would stay in a gated building with security if single.

Though I would consider Mexico City as a destination for retiring, the biggest issue is safety, definitely. Not only drug cartels and also criminal bands all around, but even the Police is very corrupt. I can tell, I am from Latin America, and sadly, that is the reality. I would be extremely cautious. BTW, glad to hear she is willing to speak Spanish and become totally fluent.
Why do so many people from the United States worry about safety in Mexico when we have mass shootings on a daily basis? Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we've had over 140 freeway shootings in the past year!! I hope I can avoid getting shot here in the USA long enough to retire to the safety of Mexico. Since I personally don't plan to do business with cartels, report news on cartels, or run for office to stamp out cartels, I think I'll be just fine living a low profile life in Mexico
@@rhyslud I can't speak for people living in the US because I don't live there. I can assure you that I spoke with few people from Mexico who left their country because of lack of safety. I tend to believe them.

We are planning to retire outside the USA and I have been watching hundreds of hours of RU-vid on the subject. One thing every experienced expat says is WAIT to buy property. Make absolutely certain you really like it. We plan to spend a month or two in our top choices (in Mexico, that's CDMX, Queretaro, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosí, Ensenada and Chapala that last is just because we're old farts). Then we'll rent for a year before we buy. Anyway don't be in a rush. We have a lot less time left than you and we are in no hurry. I hear it is a lot more difficult to sell a property in Mexico if you change your mind. I know that hard assets are going to be a good place to store wealth for the foreseeable future. I bought a rental in affordable El Paso TX. last year. For that reason.
I can understand wanting to buy your own place in Mexico City but there are issues on transferring property to family after you die. I’m planning on retiring there too but my plan is to rent instead of buying but keeping my property in San Diego. I’m only a 3 hour flight away from San Diego and the flights are inexpensive if you fly into Tijuana and then walk across through the airport CBX. Another consideration is healthcare. If you get cancer or some other serious illness you can fly yourself back the same day. United States is more advanced in cancer as well as other illnesses. Also renting is cheaper and if you get tired and need a change of scenery you can move to other parts of Mexico for a few months.

You should cover some of the downsides like having to get a temporary import permit to drive your car in certain areas, and automatically going to jail if you are involved in a vehicle accident, and paying huge import taxes when you enter Mexico with a computer, and paying enormous fines for exceeding duty free limits on things like cigarettes, and how foreigners can't buy property near the ocean or the border, etc., etc.
I've been contemplating moving to MX for a while. So tired of the US standard of living. Your video has convinced me more now. Thank you and so happy for your journey!

The worst nation to be a women in, is the USA. Militarization is just gringo, or wannabe gringos propaganda... Mexico is no where near as dangerous as the USA. ..back when Mexico was at its worst (Calderon/Obama era), Mexico was still no where near as bad as the USA.
Show us the van life in Mexico! There is some really beautiful geography in that region. Also the bird migrations from North to Central America. Such a beautiful country.
It's beautiful indeed. As of now, no plans to bring the van down to Mexico. Only plane ride trips - headed to a beach town called Puerto Escondido this weekend in fact!

Not sure if this applies to all real property purchased by Americans in Mexico, but property purchased near the ocean, the title is held by the banks, not the purchaser, even paying full purchase price with cash or when the mortgage is paid off. It's not really "owned" by the foreign purchaser.
Exciting for your new change, however, isn't Mexico City overpopulated and high crime? Hopefully you are in a nice area. I'm Mexican and have not been back to Mexico (Monterrey) since 2005. What about the drug lords and killings and kidnappings for Ransom? Or is all that just the media scaring us? Oh and what about the earthquakes? Mexico City was built on deep, soft soil that was once the bottom of a lake.
I worry about that too. I'm Hispanic and watch Latin news, and grew up hearing about the kidnapping, drug cartels etc. Mostly the celebs from telenovelas getting kidnapped or threats of kidnapping. I hope there are safer areas to retire in.

I presume that you speak Spanish. You seem like your happy and things are working out for you which makes me happy for you Rose. I rely on the fact that you are a smart woman with family and friends to turn to if need be, which allows me to not be concerned for your safety. Your videos are so well done and entertaining plus informative. (I thought I was going to move to Korea, and for a while I tried to learn Korean. Then I visited Korea and realized with out my Korean friend I would be in trouble)
What's the security situation like, do you feel safe? It was a high crime city when I visited in the 1990s. So many other factors - health care, tax, laws and human rights etc 🙂
I just traveled there for a week solo. I didn’t feel unsafe at all. There are certain areas that should be avoided, but for the most part I walked around all day by myself and didn’t have a single issue.
u'lll be hanging out in only 2 neighborhoods, rich expat hoods...it is not so safe for attractive women...I've had 4 female friends from LA, blondes, that were constantly harassed and stalked..Visiting is fine but living is totally different

Good questions. Obviously, the healthcare system is probably less complicated and less expensive than the US. I think the US has the most expensive insurance in the world. Whatever country you go to the insurance plan you get will be great.
Thank you! On the insurance and residency part, I'm working on it and will keep you posted :) For now, I still have U.S. insurance and healthcare here is so much more affordable than in the U.S. that if I need anything here I would just pay out of pocket.
Good for you Rose - I just drove all of baja to Los Cabos and back to Cali putting in my papers for dual citizenship so I can buy property down there 😀 moms is so pissed they came from Mexico 🇲🇽 and worked so hard -just so I would go back but like you said gotta live life on your own terms. Looking to retire early and do some living not just working for a living.
Learning spanish is good especially living in area where there's spanish people, you wont be ripped off in taxi or stores cause most of the times they know a foreigner when they see one by clothing and language or how poor your accent is in spanish. I think its best if you find a friend who can speak spanish/english then you'll have a great time just my two cents.
Thanks for sharing! I went to the Yucatan towns (Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum) and Mexico City to see about buying a place. I'd have to sell my house in the US first, so will go back in a few months, but want to check out the West coast of Mexico too before committing. I loved the vibe in Roma and Condesa, but really didn't like the air pollution or noise (loud cars and motorcycles). I got sick from the water there, in spite of being careful. I wasn't careful enough!
