Why I prefer Sononym over all other sample managers/librarians

In this video I explain what's wrong with most sample manager/librarian tools, and why Sononym is my favorite because it avoids these typical pitfalls AND it has other incredibly useful features like "similarity search" and a great workflow for bookmarking samples into "collections".
Note that I purchased Sononym on my own nickle and this is not a paid promotion in any way. (None of my product-specific videos have ever been paid promotions in any way--that's not how I roll.)
If you enjoyed this video, please do me a solid and not only like the video (and subscribe to my channel), but also give me a follow on SoundCloud and Spotify. Thanks!

i sincerely hope sononym have thanked you personally (with a fat bonus). You are the sole reason i decided to purchase. Stunning library. and thanks for you're attention to detail. My prvious technique was to label every sample into countless catagories and a number system. (it worked) but was a lot of effort to maintain, especially after a day of finding samples. It would be weeks before it was all re-ordered. I just want a larger library that i can cope with. And this appears to be it. Thanks again. What I'm dealing with is trying to find all the duplicate sounds in order to audition the best ones and delete the poor quality ones. Fruity Loops was guilty of giving you free samples, but they had noise in them. Of course, I cleaned up the ones I was committing to on the album. thanks for the thorough review. i have 2 questions: can you turn off the option ot make a copy of a sample when making your own collections? i'd love to keep the collections "tag-based". while wanting to use collections and it's subfolders, i'd rather drag them out of the software into the DAW, while always keep referencing the same file. is this possible as well? also, at 24:30 you specifically go to a snare folder, and sononym only recognized some of those samples as snares. i assume you can manually re-tag all the samples to snares, but if you do, will the snare samples that sononym thought were shakers, still appear under shakers as well, after re-tagging? i'm not sure i understood what overwrites what, or what has priority over what in search results edit: sry, last question - i assume that if you update, or add samples to one of the main folders, sononym will recognize this and analyze automatically? or is adding new samples an issue? (it's a huge issue with ADSR manager, hence my question)
@noisyneil

great video. i have audiofinder and was looking at samplism but the prospect of manually tagging files left me feeling quite nauseous! i absolutely love XO by the way. game changer, i think. however, as much as i do love XO, my goal with all this is to set up a bunch of instances of battery into my template, each filled with hits, so i can just jump around the keyboard and play parts without looking at files at all. for example, i wanna program some hihats, so i select my hihat battery instance and just start playing, jumping around the keyboard till i find a good combo of sounds. as far as i can tell, battery is the best option for that because of the high pad count with individual envelopes. if XO had a higher pad count, it would be game over, i think. i would use logic's sampler or kontakt, but the envelopes are limited. sorry for the ramble, but i've been thinking about this a lot lately!

I feel you. I find myself using UVI Drum Designer a lot these days because I can take pretty much any starting sound that is in the right genre/feel and start composing. Then it's easy to later make adjustments to that sound to better fit the full song mix as it builds up, instead of digging around for an entirely different sample.

Hmmm...I realise I'm commenting on a pretty old video at this point, but I do have a question. Would Sononym perhaps be a better option for someone who was only really interested in the categorisation aspect of XO and not so much the sequencer, or is the sample map from XO still enough of a workflow boon to make it useful alongside Sononym? Many thanks!

The thing I like about ADSR's Sample Manager is the ability to preview the samples directly in your DAW, even synced to your project tempo and key if preferred. As Sononym isn't available as a plugin format, I'm guessing you can't make it sync with your DAW? I just checked, and XO does sync with your host DAW - that's exciting, at least! But what about Sononym?

i kinda like ADSR sample manager because of the weird tags and the randomize function to look for drony samples or usually pad like sounds
@Baphometrix
@Baphometrix 4 года назад
Yeah, I like ADSR's tool over LoopCloud, for sure. My main gripe was always the problem I demonstrated at the beginning of the video, where you can't find many samples simply because of the bad sample naming (and therefore relying on you to manually browse folders and look at folder names to understand what types of sounds are where). ADSR and Loopcloud simply can't deal with this because they focus only on the file names alone.
@Baphometrix
@Baphometrix 4 года назад
Oh, and Sononym did add both "random sample" and a "shuffle results list" feature in this latest version 1.1. The Shuffle feature is actually pretty nice. The random sample feature still needs a little tweaking when used in Similarity Search results, though, because IMO it still ranges too far from the top of the results list where the most similar samples are. I spoke with the developers about that and they mentioned that they did try to weight the random result closer to the top of the results list, but they agreed that some type of user input "max range" value would be helpful to let us control how far down it looks for random results.

Well I'm not finished watching the video yet but I can tell that ADSR do scan actual audio material, cuz for example I used tag "Click" or "Perc" and it suggested my sounds that sounds like clicks but doesn't have click in filename or parent folder name. Create as FEW symlinks as you need to somehow encompass the samples you want Sononym to know about. Start with just one symlink to the main folder of your sample library.

Is not only that can look for matching sounds but it can select samples that sounds good together and that translates into minimum EG, COMPRESSION ECT ECT, if any. So in theory it should make the MIXING AND MASTERING a breeze. 😳😮

Baph... once you have the sample or loop that you want how do you play it on your midi keyboard? is this sample manager a plugin or do you then have to drag the sample into your DAW or sampler? This is the big gripe I have with these sample managers. It's cool to organize your samples but then dragging and dropping is a pain. I love XO also for this reason. I can play the samples directly from XO onto a track. Also, I have millions of samples. Do I just block and copy millions of files or thousands of folders and drag theme into Sononym and then wait for however long it takes it to do its thing?
@Baphometrix
@Baphometrix 4 года назад
If you have literally *millions* of samples, that's pretty unsustainable, overall. Not just with Sononym, but in general. The more samples you have to wade through--whether with the help of a sample manager/librarian or not--the slower your workflow becomes, and the harder the discovery and decision-making. As to your "once you have the sample or loop you want" question, that's the entire reason for various types of "Sampler" instruments, isn't it. Every DAW has a native Sampler device. Many DAWs also have native "special-purpose" sampler devices such as the "Drum Machine" in Bitwig Studio or the "Drum Rack" in Ableton Live. Then there are quite a few 3rd party sampler instruments that all have different claims to fame and are good at solving different problems related to different use-cases for samples. XO is one example, oriented towards solving problems with drum-based samples in particular. Kontakt is another, oriented towards large, complex, layered multi-samples to create very realistic organic instrument sounds (horn sections, string ensembles, famous pianos, etc.). Another might be Serato Sample, which is oriented towards the workflow needs of the "sample flipping" process used by Hip Hop producers and bass music producers. There are no magic bullets for finding and managing a sample collection. Only tools that help with this or that aspect.
@phillipjones3766
@phillipjones3766 4 года назад
@@Baphometrix This is the current state of things. Dragging and dropping just seems so cumbersome and inefficient. I'm a pro in LA and everyone I know has "millions". If one of these companies could make a sample manager that doubles as a plugin so when you find what you are looking for you can immediately hit your keyboard and play it, manipulate it, chop it, etc. Wouldn't that be amazing! Thanks for your reviews and insights.

Hi Baphy is there a sync to Daw function or is this not possible.
@Baphometrix
@Baphometrix 4 года назад
At present, this isn't possible. Sononym runs standalone only, not as a VST. You can easily drag samples into and out of your DAW. (Clipping out one drum or bass hit from your favorite reference track and then dropping that clipped-out sample into Sononym is a GREAT way to leverage its similarity search, BTW.) There are some DAW integration features on the roadmap, but synced playback to host isn't yet on the roadmap. I'd recommend dropping a feature request about this on their contact page? TBH, I rarely used the synced host playback and pitch transposition stuff in Loopcloud or ADSR Sample Manager, either.

this may be a bit misleading... In ADSR you searched for "KICKS" but searched for "KICK" in Sononym. And looks like the kicks being pulled in Sononym is based on the fact the are categorized as "kicks." You'd have to show us a folder containing kick files that don't have kick in the file name but the folder name does. It seems to me that you're saying "search terms is important" would mean that if you type "kick" it will not grab "kicks" but if you search for "kicks" it probably will not pull "kick." Most searches behave that way in that "all criteria of what you're requesting has to be met." It needs to have at least "k-i-c-k-s." The more characters you type the more specific the search becomes. 'm going to test when I get home in ADSR, I could be wrong. I'm going to see if it will take a wildcard to "WOOSH*"
