I share my opinions over the current Windows vs Linux debate, and why I might not switch from Windows to Linux. This video also includes me giving reasons why I haven't switched to Linux, and you might find some relatability in that. I go over Linux and Adobe product, and Linux gaming to cover two main points.
All with outlast trials, and xDefiant gameplay in the background, supplemented by memes.
This video is also 40% (random ahh percentage) sarcastic.
I also state that windows 11 recall is a horrible idea.

My main problem is that 99% of the things were not made for linux. Example: When i tried to switch to linux Corsair's Icue was not compatible with linux, found some 3rd party software that was able to replace Icue. Problem is that 3rd party software was waaay to generic and didnt recognize that my k95 had 6 extra macro keys on the left. I was able to do everything else I wanted but could not set up macros to those buttons rendering them useless. Now this is not a huge deal breaker, ofc I could live without those buttons, or just set up macros on windows, save it to the on board memory in my keyboard and it would work on linux too. But the issue is that these little things can happen any time and from my experience they WILL happen. And this is just annoying. At these points I ask my self "why do i even use linux ?"

@@MyNameIsntNinathing is, the difference between distros is effectively just what program you use for your desktop (DEs/WMs), what command you run to install packages and what packages are available by default. If you are the kind of person who can't decide, you can go with something like Arch which comes with bare minimum so that with a short extra setup you can try out different DEs/WMs without having to reinstall. Suggesting Arch since it's the best for such purpose for most people due to it's popularity, it also causes it to have more packages than most other distros. I use Gentoo which is similar but gives you even more freedom to configure and minmax it, tho the initial setup is longer and it's a bit less popular. All in all Linux is Linux, you can do anything on any distro, some are just better at different things out of the box but that is all. Also most distros let you try them out before installing because they're a full standalone lightweight installs of themselves which come with an installer executable on the desktop, you can try them out without having to make any chances to your PC

In my eyes, linux is more of a hobbyist os catered for computer geeks and programmers. It takes time to navigate the ecosystem and I understand why its not popular even though it has far better privacy protection and performance than windows. windows is intuitive, has access to various software because of its market value and easy to use unlike linux. linux becomes your friend when you finally understand it. linux is the definiiton of customization in the computer world, you mold it to how you intend it, the problem is you have to learn and it takes time to learn...

@@Josh-Barnett Nah. The only thing you can disagree with a bit is the first sentence about it being for computer geeks and programmers. Everything else is quite true. Yes you can install a Linux distro relatively easily and get up and running with your web browser and maybe spotify or what not. But once you have to start doing actual work or productivity stuff is when most people will start to encounter the challenges of not being on Windows. Windows has "dumbed down" many things to make it easier for people to do stuff. On Linux if you are manually looking for software you now need to remember what type of distro you have (debian, arch, centos, etc) because each of em use their own package system. If you are using an arch distro you need to be aware of the AUR and its potential "dangers". Not to mention that if at some point you encounter problems that you might need to google the answer for, chances are you will get solutions that are tailored for the command line which many people (if not most) would be a bit uncomfortable using. And this is coming from someone who uses Linux from the command line 99% of the time. @@MyNameIsntNina I do find Linux compelling and I truly hope it does continue to flourish in terms of compatibility, especially for gaming. That might happen a lot sooner than we realise which makes me happy. I don't like the direction Windows is going in, and I can't stand how it's become a cesspool of ads. Also as someone studying Comp Sci, it's really common to meet antisocial people that don't know how to communicate. I feel like this phenomenon is consistent with how the more tech savvy users, who are more likely to use Linux, can be awful at how they talk to people and come across as insufferable. When you understand this, it becomes easier to understand why they act like Gollum and treat Linux like their precious. Edit: Forgot to add that comment I saw on a Linus video that describes Linux users as the Vegans of the computer world.

If you have a notebook, even an old one, its great to install Linux and try some distros. I never tried any until this "Recall" thing started popping up and gave it a try. As I dont have a bunch of time to do it in one run, i had to go super slowly allocating about 1 to 2 hours of my days to try a new thing I was interested in trying. I use a ton of Adobe softwares in general so i couldnt simply jump entirely, but the learning curve is quite fast and can be somewhat addicting. I'm trying to learn more about VM and how to Passthrough my GPU to a fully working emulated and offline version of Windows and it seems to be possible, and when I understand how to it properly, no doubt i'll install on my main PC. But again, if you have a pc lying around, let it be a 1 hour daily hobbie and you will learn quite fast, the internet is full of content about it. My distro choice was Fedora.

This is a great video ngl because it shows the ongoing issues of people who want to try Linux to just try something new, only to be blocked by number of issues. So for me, I just accepted that I cannot play some games and not use certain programs on Linux. I 100% agree with you on the terminal aspect, I can't just force someone to open a terminal and expect them to not be scared or anxious. The thing about the terminal, while it is such a versatile tool, we are so use to using GUIs. I feel like a lot of people in the Linux community do not understand that. Some people just want to boot up their games and have fun. I completely respect that perspective. Linux users need to understand that when people see a crap ton of error codes, that can overwhelm someone into not using Linux. I remember going through a 20 minute tutorial on how to install overwatch 2 on Linux and I thought to myself "This would have taken me like 5 minutes on Windows". I do not know how we can find easier ways for people, but we can't just barrage someone for not knowing the difference between a snap package or a flatpak or something like that.

Once you put a Taskbar in with Gnome extensions, most of the panic goes away 😂. But if you rely heavily on the creative suite, then yea, I'd stick to Mac or Windows for that.

I switched to Linux full-time around when they released Windows 8... While it hasn't been sunshine and roses *all* of the time, I definitely haven't looked back. The biggest concern for me regarding Windows was Big-Tech's push toward software-as-a-service. Eventually, Microsoft is going to charge you a subscription to use Windows --- regardless of how asinine that'll be. They've gotta justify all that OneDrive cloud space and AI API-call garbage, eh? Knowing that the fate of (basically) all of "gaming" rested in their scummy hands as well was enough to make me want to adopt an open-source alternative, despite the problems. And man, there were PROBLEMS back then! No Proton. Wine had pretty terrible performance on what *did* run. Nvidia drivers either worked beautifully or not at all. AMD's drivers were ass at the time (now they're *much* better). Oddly Minecraft was always pretty solid, though, lol. I'd say that if you don't understand nor care to understand how your computer works, you probably shouldn't switch to Linux. It gives you a LOT of control, but that comes at the cost of increased complexity. No, it's not as insanely difficult as some people make it out to be --- I'm an artist by trade and get along just fine --- but it is probably ~50% "more technical" than Windows is. And if you're interested in programming at all, Windows is a complete non-starter; the Linux tooling for software development is SO much better it's insane, and you'll be forced to use it in college anyway! As is the case with *any* situation in life where you choose to not understand something: you'll have to accept that you're being taken advantage of. A mechanic will screw you over if you know nothing about your car, and Microsoft will screw you over if you know nothing about your computer. For instance, if you spent a ton of money on hardware, doesn't it kinda suck to know that a decent chunk of performance is wasted on Microsoft's telemetry and ad services *instead* of being used on the games you actually bought it for? But you do have to pick your battles in life, and you won't have time to learn *everything* --- if you're "ok" with whatever Microsoft does, then that's just "the cost of doing business." The good news is, Linux isn't dependent on the well-being of a corporation, so it'll *always* be there if you change your mind!
@Voidstroyer
@Voidstroyer Месяц назад
Big-Tech's push towards software-as-a-service is not limited to WIndows though. Sooner or later (if not already) Linux users will have to deal with that as well. I doubt that Windows will move towards a subscription system for Windows since that is something that I believe would sooner happen with Apple than it would with Microsoft. I disagree that if you are interested in programming that Windows is a non-starter. Windows has WSL and there is also Docker. Combine the 2 and you have all you would ever need for programming since you don't need a Linux GUI for programming. You just need the environment which WSL provides in full. "if you spent a ton of money on hardware, doesn't it kinda suck to know that a decent chunk of performance is wasted on Microsoft's telemetry and ad services instead of being used on the games you actually bought it for". I have played games on both Windows (still do) and Linux and the performance on Linux was far far far worse. And that wasn't even that long ago (I guess it was in 2023).

You definitely do not have to touch a command line if you don't want to with nobaraos (Official), but for specific software it is inevitable. I'm at the point were I'm just sick of microsofts shit, I will make the shift and learn just like I did on windows years ago. Linux is getting better and better for an average casual user/gamer, it's just not there yet for many people. I know some of you may laugh, but it's really been a long way. It used to be much, much harder. We need to remember that Linux is basically a foundation of everything we do with technology and most of the software created for an average customer is based on it. But it's created by nerds, people deeply passionate about technology, people who are working with technology all their lifes, and not by for profit companies. And THIS is the root cause of its unpopularity among regular folks. Things that are plain obvious for nerds are sometimes black magic for everyone else. And if something is driven by passion, not money, it will never take into account limitations of people without this passion. I kinda like the enshitification and downfall of modern big tech companies, as it makes more and more people start thinking about learning more complicated stuff just to get rid of them from their lifes. And at the same time if pushes nerds to create more friendly GUIs, compatibility layers etc. and forces them to kinda start understanding the average user's needs. Just take it easy, don't wall into the traps of snobs and elitists, because when not taking some bad apples covered by RU-vid channels, Linux community is mostly very friendly and understanding. P.S - Adobe is something that will never work well on Linux because they clearly don't want that, it's their intention. I've learned to use alternatives. If you don't want to learn alternatives, don't use Linux, it won't work. There are a few highly technical solutions to make it KINDA work, but it's just not worth it.

Adobe can't even get their software to work right on Windows. I did a free trial recently and every time I restarted my Windows 11 machine I would get a Log2Transport.exe failed error. Googled it and its a super common issue. Their fix was to make Regedit changes. How a company charges a subscription for a product that bugs your OS then wants the end user to perform low-level OS changes is beyond me.

I would dual boot Windows and Linux at bare minimum and even though Windows Recall is a huge reason why, this is not my main reason. Linux does better things than Windows by a huge margin, specifically with emulation. While compatibility is an issue now, it is rapidly becoming less and less of an issue every single day It is also more customizable and easier to customize than Windows with its bajillion registry keys and funny enough, it's so easier to do every day tasks since it's less likely to tweak out on you because of you forgot to update a driver a few hours ago. I actually had a BSOD happen because of outdated drivers that were a single month old, I wish I was making this up. I also had driver issues updating 3 times in a row before as well and had to DDU my drivers 15 different times. Even if it's with a throwaway laptop (Would recommend MX Linux for this and KDE for the Windows taskbar feel), at least try a distro out for a couple of days.

linux compatability is like the chicken and egg situation, devs wont make software for linux because its not popular and users wont switch to linux because the devs didnt make software for it, although the compatability layers have gotten so good that you can play some windows-only games on linux as for the tinkering, that usually lasts for a few weeks as naturally you wanna install programs and configure your os to suit you, after that linux is like any normal os

As everything else, it is a tradeoff.. Linux offers a lot of benefits, with open source free tools and endless customization and performance. Windows, and apple in the other hand offers ease of use.. the tradeoff is that you are bounded to their pricing and their choices for the system, and be much more vunerable to viruses. The cost for linux is your time and effort to learn the damn thing. For my setup I use ubuntu, and run VMs (qemu/kvm) both for windows and macOS.. It has been a way better experience than dual boot for me.

If you decide to stay on Windows, even though they'll be literally recording your screen. That's 100% up to you. No judging here tbh. Hopefully we don't turn this into a "I'm a master race for downloading Linux" situation. Personally I did switch to Linux. Linux works for 99% of my needs and it has come seriously far in the world of gaming. But there's convenient things Windows has that Linux just doesn't. And I get that. Personally, I do think enough people have been switching to Linux that Linux will become way more viable for the majority of people in time. Which has been said by every Linux person since the beginning of time. But, I get it. I mean, I'm using Linux now because the Windows 11 pill was too much for me between the spyware, bad UI, forced ads, and continued banning of you altering your own settings. But I still have to have a Windows VM, because there's things in Windows I still need. Which if you go that route, Linux honestly is perfect. But I'm just ranting because I get it. I really do.

Microsoft said that Windows 10 was the last version of Windows tho. I'm holding them to it, when Windows 10 dies, Windows as a whole is dead to me. Careful what you wish for, Microsoft.

I hope that either A: your kids end up getting jobs or whatever they want to do career wise that gives them the freedom to use Linux (if they work for a company, then that company better have Linux computers) or B: the world changes so drastically that Linux becomes the default. Or just teach your kids how to use Windows at some point because it is far more likely that they will need to use it in their future.

while I do see many frankly stupid comments I would say that most long time linux users forget how it is for the average person the average user doesn't want to play around in their nor is he/she used to the terminology of other operating systems, especially that of linux. many long time linux users are far off of the average user, they are tinkerers and they most of the time don't take into account what the average user is like (me included). same problems are persistent into the development of distros and software as most devs ask for bug reports to be on github, well formatted, logs and all info included, this leads to a feedback cycle where the only people giving feedback to the devs are other devs or technologically knowledgeable people, isolating the average user. and while the video makes some points that are non issues, it is understandable since they stem from the wording on sites/resources (like the davinci resolve issue or every "best linux distro" article pointing to the same recycled points from 10 years ago) also nice vid you got a new sub

If all you do on computer is programming and playing games (except vanguard games), you won't have to dualbooot, just use linux. And almost everything will be better and more painless than windows. Advantages of linux are too many to list. After you learn how to use linux of course. For me it was a month to be way more productive than i was on windows. But I have a programming background. I do not recommend any linux distro at all for someone who does not do any programming or is not interested in learning and tinkering. Stick to windows. No linux distro is better than windows or mac for average consumers. I dont know anything about how abode programs work on linux. If you use them profesionally, just use windows. If you don't, there are free alternatives to them.
