WHY I QUIT Being a Full Time Reseller. 

I think it’s different for everyone, I left my full time job because I hated it in 2018 and started reselling full time. To me reselling is a dream I don’t feel like it’s a job because I love it so much and I make a great income. I have freedom to make my schedule I just got back today from visiting my family on Maui and was there for 15 days, I could never do that when I was a manager for different luxury retail. Some days I put in a lot of hours and some days I don’t. I trust that the universe will provide and I always make the money I need. I know this is not for everyone you have to love it have fun with it and when that happens the money starts rolling in.

Full time reselling is a nightmare of massive proportions. Nobody talks about the sleepless nights, the pressure, the daily grind, and the cheapening of the human spirt.

I’ve been a reseller on eBay for 17 years. 3 years ago I went full time. I have the opposite problem. I love reselling and I have a problem with knocking off for the day. I could do 12 hours a day. But my family press me to work a more normal schedule. I do 6 figures, but that’s made up of eBay, posh, Mercari and Etsy. I don’t just do clothing. I do everything. It’s great that you understand your true path. Reselling will always be a skill and a source of additional income any time you want or need it.

That is how I live, as a full time reseller every day. Sale by sale. It is VERY VERY HARD THAT NOONE EVER TELLS THE TRUTH ABOUT. Thank you for being honest.. I just subscribed ☺

Same! I’m a part-time reseller and don’t invest a lot of time like I did when I first started. I definitely don’t make 6 figures or thousands like most resellers. I only make a under $300/mon sometimes a lot less, buts it’s not a job that I depend on. It’s really just a hobby for me, my husband works full time on a secular job. I’m a stay-at-home so it’s just something I do to make a few extra bucks

Hi! Just now coming across this (which is weird because I'm subscribed!! I must've just missed it)... I agree full-time IS HARD! It's not all rainbows and butterflies like youtube and instagram portrays. It definitely can take some of the fun out of it :(. However I do think once your business is built to a consistent place, you don't need 40+ hours a week. My first year I was putting 40-60 hours a week, I breathed and bled reselling - 110%... but now I can be a full time student and a full time reseller with putting in 10-20 hours a week, without seeing much of a dip in sales. It isn't easy but it's doable! Glad you were able to be honest with yourself and find your place :)

I have been trying to transition to a Full Time Reseller as well… I felt like a failure because I was sooo stressed out and felt overwhelmed at how much work is involved just to make some sales and other you tubers made it look so easy and were making tons of money at it. I have wanted to quit and go back to regular employment, but thought “I should like this and I should be making more money” and I wouldn’t allow myself to give up. But Listening to you brought tears to my eyes because I finally got the validation I needed to give this EBay business up full time and be “ok” with it. When you were talking it was as if everything I was feeling came to surface and now I can take a breath of fresh air and move on to pursue something I am more passionate about! I can totally understand. I tried being a FT reseller, but it was just too hard relying on one source of income. I don’t have a spouse to rely on for healthcare benefits or extra income in case sales are slow, like many of these other FT resellers do. I’m a registered nurse and for me, I like knowing that I can work for guaranteed income, especially during this pandemic. Being a part-time reseller allows me to have extra income on top of my guaranteed income. When I first joined Poshmark, I made a lot more sales. I just don’t think people have the disposable income they once did for clothing. In order to stay successful as a reseller, I think it’s time to branch into reselling things that are more essential and needed. I don’t think I will keep reselling clothing for much longer. Will definitely remain a part-time reseller either way.

Yes I agree! I am retiring from my government job soon..and will resell now but know I will get a regular retirement check. I could never have done done it full time and be stressed out all the time to make sure I will cover my bills each month.

Oh my goodness, thanks for your transparency. I love thrifting, but I could see myself losing the fun factor and the joy of it when it becomes a full time process. Thank you for making this visible for me before I started this journey. I am totally going use this as a fun money or vacation money to go cool places.

I totally agree! I tried reselling full time while waiting months to start my government job and it took all the fun out of it for me. I really appreciate your open and honest discussion because I feel like most resellers make it seem so glamorous and easy and like their profit is insane. True talk. Love it.

getting inventory is the hardest part of reselling for a job in my opinion. its easy if you're going to have a store thats like 200 items but to grow to 3k+ inventory is very hard.

I know for sure I would not like reseller as a full time job. I am fine with it being a side hustle. I enjoy it so much this way..

Love your honesty. I’m a PT reseller, artist, and have a FT “day” job. The balance is hard. I love my FT job and plan to retire in 3 yrs. I haven’t pursued my artwork since I started really reselling regularly as I just don’t have the time. I’ve been an ebayer since they were created, but only sporadically sold (back then, we had to use a clunky desktop with an sd card for pics, sell auctions only, wait for payment to arrive in the mail, wait for the check to clear and then ship...... talk about stressful. Lol.). But a lot of your story brought some things to light for me. That I’m not pursuing my true passion which is art. I feel the need to list, list, list to keep my algorithms up so my products will be seen, so I can sell more, then source more, then list etc etc.. it’s a vicious cycle and one I’m not happy doing. I will most likely always be a reseller since a lot of my artwork I do create with thrifted and up cycled items, but the constant “junkie mentality” ( for lack of a better term) is exhausting mentally and physically. You “ eat, sleep and breath” reselling. And one other factor that I feel is very overlooked, a lot of resellers with successful YT channels sell to their followers. They are influencers also which is fine, but no one mentions that they have 20k, 50k, etc followers. Thanks again, and bet wishes for your new adventure.

Such a great video. I so appreciate your honesty! I've been "full-time" for a few months now, and it truly is nooooo joke. I'm an actress as well, so the flexibility of reselling is great for when I have auditions and stuff, but it can be so hard to motivate oneself when there's no boss above you forcing you to meet deadlines. That's amazing that you're pursuing writing - congratulations! It's so clear that it's what you really love and are passionate about, and it always makes me happy to see others pursuing their passion. xo

Hi Laura! Nice to see you! I loved your honesty throughout this video. It was very interesting to hear your thoughts on full time reselling and your reasons for transitioning back to part time. I hope that everything goes great with your freelance writing career! Love that you're following your passion :D I've definitely experienced similar struggles as you with full time reselling. It's hard to stay focused and motivated all the time! I get so distracted. I've been very off and on with youtube lately because I'm trying to pin down a work schedule that allows me to 1. Not work all hours of the day lol and 2. Actually get things done during the hours that I do work (instead of putting on a show or doing something else to distract myself from work). Time blocking has been extremely helpful so that's what I'm currently trying to stick to. Every half hour I set a task: 2:00pm Photos, 2:30pm Listing, 3:00pm clean the house, 3:30pm photos.. so on. When I stick to that I am very productive! I completely get full time reselling not being for everybody. I wonder sometimes if I would be better off doing something else full time and reselling part time. But I really love reselling full time and it stresses me out more to think about doing something else for hours everyday that I don't love. So I'm going to make it work! But definitely still figuring it out. I recently decided consignment in particular really doesn't work for my business. I end up wasting so much time listing stuff that won't make me much money either because of the consignment split or because I was sent low-value items. Plus it's very difficult to stay motivated to list a bunch of stuff that you know won't bring in a good profit. I have so much consignment stuff in my basement I need to list though so just trying to get through it all. It's been a stuggle lol. Sorry for the novel haha. Everything you’ve been talking about I’ve been thinking about. It’s more proof that you really have to experience things in order to know if it’s for you or not.

Doing it for 1 year means you gave it a really, really, serious try. It is refreshing to hear from the other side, the people who say it doesn't work for them. New sub here! I think it is great you got the opportunity to see if it was for you to be full time. I am full time and it can definitely be daunting at times. I just started over with my inventory and a few months ago sent everything to online consignment and donated the rest. Once I did that and did resell for a few months I felt much better and way less burned out. Now I am building up better inventory than before and I am really excited. Ooooh this was so interesting, thank you for being so candid and honest with us! That's amazing you've been able to take up writing and all that freelance work. The 6 month severance package sounds like it came at a perfect time for you to explore your options, what an amazing story. I agree, I feel like if my income depended on reselling it would become stressful and the fun would be taken out of it. Great to know someone with a similar career background as me. I retired out of the college admissions arena as a Master Admissions Rep for a small private college also. I decided to become an eBay and Amazon reseller when my youngest daughter was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I no longer wanted someone dictating when I could take off whenever she was sick or for any other reason I needed or wanted to take off work.

I Absolutely LOVE that you made this video. I think it’s really important to share this point of view. I am a part-time reseller also and have considered trying to do it full-time. I’ve resisted mostly because of many of the reasons you listed. Right now, reselling is fun for me. I really enjoy going out and sourcing. If it were my primary means of income, I think the mindset would be different. Today is Saturday, and I’m in the mood to stay home and read a book and that’s fine. If I were a FT reseller, I might feel the need to hit the yard sales near me before the season is over or go to Savers, etc. Thank you for this video and I hope you will continue to make content. I just stumbled upon your channel and saw this video and I really appreciated your honesty regarding full time reselling. I started reselling part time just over a year ago and have been toying with the idea of going full time. However a lot of the things you brought up are also concerns of mine. I love reselling because it’s fun and I worry the joy might be lost when it’s not just fun and games. I’m not ruling it out but I agree that there are tons of videos online about going full time from part time but not many going the other way and I think this is a reality of the business! Same! I work in technology in the international development field and love reselling as a side hobby and a creative outlet, as you say. It’s fun and exciting, and completely different than my day job, which I also love. I have no interest in becoming a full-time reseller but I really enjoy it.

Totally appreciate your transparency, i’ve been reselling for about 4 years very part time and every time i’ve tried to make it more full time it’s been the biggest stress. I also do a lot of other things and the amount of time and effort full time reselling takes would take up all of someone’s time and just isn’t for me. I love thrifting and also score free goods so often so will always resell but I always thought full time reselling looked so glamorous and it just isn’t. I love to travel and have flexibility to work anywhere so definitely agree with you! I don’t think people understand the time it takes to do everything that goes into posting just one item, I know I didn’t before I started. Good for people to know both sides.

Great side hustle and that's about it. To make okay money you have to invest your whole life into it. A regular job you work your shift and go home. Reselling is pretty much all day and night. You are either sourcing,researching,taking photos,cleaning inventory,organizing,listing,responding to buyers,packing,shipping it just doesn't end.

I struggle with going full time . I like the guaranteed paycheck my full time job provides as volatile as the economy is noone can guarantee sales will continue the way they have and that gives me enough pause to not quit my job

I also started full time selling and I have found it really hard to get motivated. I retired and my wife works so I dont have the stress of how will I pay my bills. But it is hard to get motivated. I kind of grew out of the doing this as a treasure hunt, finding that one cool piece to sell, like when I as part time. Now its basically grind it out. Go out and get the mall brands and if I find a treasure or two great but it really is just a business and nothing more. With that type of thinking I think I have grown in the awareness of what reselling is about. I think most of us struggle with what is our bliss job. I never found my bliss job and Ive had many careers from pastry chef to being a cyber security analyst for a government agency. I did find my bliss in animal rescue and as I grow in this business I hope to turn it into a charity that donates the profits, thats my love and passion. The point being is maybe your love lies not in the job but in something you are passionate about that has nothing to do with an income. Its all a journey and this is just another step in your self discovery. Good Luck!!!

So I always stop to watch these (“why I quit reselling”) to get a pulse on why some resellers jump to full-time but leave after a short while. Most of the time it’s because they didn’t give it enough time, jumped too soon or didn’t really evaluate all it would take. Your analysis is different… I’ve always said I would quit full-time (4+ years now) if it was no longer fun but felt like work. Seems that was your scenario and you’re continuing to pursue your passion. That’s the right call. I’m a history teacher at heart & teach once a week for fun & reselling still doesn’t feel like work. Appreciate you sharing & hope this encourages others to resell as a vehicle to their final destination (in your case writing) or as an enjoyable income stream.-Orlando

I started reselling in 2000, stopped then picked it back up last year. I do it part time, list and sell 7 per day. I sell mostly theifted clothes. When I really dug deep into the numbers, I discovered that I only made about $8-9 item after adding in all the expenses and everything including all the unsold inventory that no one ever facrors into their business. Since you seems like an educated person and has such potential to be a writer, I dont think its wise to use up your time on a low yielding endevour. We have to think of opportunity cost for our time. Some people say I love it! I love finding gold in the thrift store and flipping it. Well, if were being honest, thats a dopamine hit similar to what you get gambling or doing an addictive activity. I also stopped selling and the 2-3 hrs you free up on average per day equates to so much more physical and mind share space than you think.

I reseller and I am a hairdresser… one thing that hit me hard was I love reselling and doing hair is getting in the way because I am dividing my time up to much… I don’t even have to work really, all this is for fun but lately doing all this hair, I have a salon in my home…and the people really don’t care, by that I mean if they are late or don’t show they don’t care. This video was wonderful and well thought out… you have help me a lot.. When the fun stops you stop and turn around !!! Thanks

Can anyone do it? Yes, absolutely. Can they do it in the long run? No. If everyone had the same opportunity we would all be rich but realistically it doesn’t work out that way. There are a lot of variables that determine if it will work in the long run. Been reselling full time for 4 years and I will not have it any other way. I am able to travel when I want and the duration of my vacation(s) is my decision, not a manager’s. I get up when I want, sleep when I want, and I work in my pajamas👍 The biggest factor that will make and break this kind of industry is the products. If all you have access to is junk, might as well go back to the 9 to 5.

Loved your honesty and candour! It's ok (and so helpful) to try things out, and see if they're for us - especially for the long term. So great that you're writing and doing what you love - that's the most important thing! I recently made the switch to reselling full time, and it's definitely very different from doing it part-time. Ahhh I feel like we have so much in common!!!!! I wanted to be a writer since I was little kid- only thing I ever really truly wanted to do. I got degrees in psychology and school counseling, didn’t really love them by the time I finished the degrees (lol), and ended up working in career counseling (also a small liberal arts college) until I was laid off from covid. I got more into YT and reselling and am working on my second novel! For me- I am so grateful to add up all three to a full time job. I love that I can work 18 hours one day and 0 another if I feel like it. I am beyond blessed that everything I make is extra and goes toward fun purchases and debt, while my husband’s salary covers the rest. Sorry for an insanely long comment- but just had to share how much we have in common!! Definitely subscribing- so glad I found you! 💕

Love it. I am concerned with losing my full time job and tried to consider Poshmark as a career also.. But it's fall and I really kill it in the fall so of course I'm making more here than at real job. Thank God I've been doing this long enough to realize the ebbs and flows and it takes a LOT to admit defeat. Not that you are defeated. But it's very admirable that you made this video and are completely transparent.

Congratulations on your writing success! The same happened to me- I completely lost my passion for reselling when it was my only income. I went back to my regular job with predictable hours, and now I only sell items that I'm excited about selling and it's only for extra money. That's a LOT more fun than depending on a thrift store find to pay your electric bill, in my opinion. Cheers and I wish you continued success- sounds like you're an entrepreneur at heart :).

Thank you Laura for your honest opinion. I started reselling for a little over a year but I have my full time job and therefore do not have a lot of time to post. I find reselling fun but I can see where this can lead to a lot of stress and no longer something you can enjoy. Making a sale always motivates me but making a sale because I have to pay bills does not sound fun. As you stated in your video, I also find myself being lazy and wanting to do other things. I have days where I just want to post for a week and then weeks where I don’t post at all. All the videos I have watched so far are full time resellers which motivates me when I hear how much money they make but I also know it involves full time dedication to make the money which I’m at not good at. Truly appreciate this video.

I commend you for being honest. I was full time reselling for a year and then went back to a job for 6 months. Only stayed 6 months because I reallyy missed the freedom my business brought me so I went back to FT reselling. That being said I didn't do that until I had 5k saved in the bank and I stayed on with my job per diem, which gives me a part time income with the same flexibility and freedom as my business does and that works wonderfully for me. Before that, doing just reselling as my only income was like you said, HARD. lol. Definitely not for the weak and overly sugar coated online. You have to be a certain type of person who is very self motivated and you have to also realize it's not instant gratification, you can work all day and make $0. Lol. You have to love it and I think getting creative with other avenues of income as well helps (like maybe sharing closets, doing consignment, or whatever it may be) really really helps. I'm glad you found what is right for you!

I am happy making modest income on the side. I am part time at the moment, but I am getting to full time level. I have been an independent contractor since I was 19, I am 35 now. I don't do well with most bosses. I worked on state ballot measures, but that went out the door with covid. Deadlines and pressure is my expertise. Everyone has their own style. I am happy you are seeking happiness. 👍👍

Just came across your video. I to started reselling part time in July 2020 and went full time in August 2021. Before 2020 I use to sell 10-100 items a year just randomly. When I went full time in August 2021 I too had 6 months worth of money to pay all my bills, plus lots of stock so went from there. However since March 2022 with the cost of living sales have fallen of a cliff. Payday week is amazing, but the other 3 weeks of the month are poor. Want to stay as I'am with Q4 around the corner but as it stands there's a 99% chance I will drop down to part time in January and get a part time job. Really love reselling full time as your your own boss. But at the end of the day you need to be able to live. Sadly going into 2023 I can see it getting worse with a recession looming and the cost of living increasing even more in January. Plus here in the UK this year there are so many more part time resellers trying to make extra to pay their bills. Unless you've got 1000's of items listed, being full time is mega hard. Hey Laura, thank you for the honesty. I can say 100 percent many on social media glamorize reselling without being completely transparent. I stumbled across reselling and quit my job. But I agree with you that once I did that, everything changed. It become my JOB rather than my Side hustle. The pressure was on, I took sales more seriously and personally... felt like a chore lol. For many, it's a deal-breaker if they lose interest and we see others, such as yourself, pivoting which is perfectly okay. Life is all about pivots. For me, it was either niche it down to a specific category and focus on that or go back to the workforce. The freedom of not having to go to a J.O.B. helped me make that choice to improve in those areas that I lost interest in and to resuscitate my motivation for reselling. Who knew selling sneakers could be fun. lol

Really appreciate your transparency. Most people make reselling seem like it's the greatest thing in the world and in reality it's A TON of work. Don't get me wrong, it can be a lot of fun. I love sourcing. But you really need to be dedicated and motivated to have consistent sales and then depending on where you live, it's harder to find good inventory. Ive been selling very part-time on and off for several years. I have an almost full time job so it's not possible to go full time, unless I quit and unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable doing that because relying on each sale is super stressful. I've always had an entrepenurial spirit and I know I could make it work or be sucesseful as a full time reseller, but I just don't have the time to be full time. And even partime is hard when you have a main job. I've tried all the different platforms too, some are much harder to break into and have steady flow of sales. Be happy that it helped you decide what you really want to do in life. It's always good as a side hustle if you can make time for it. I would love to be fulltime and be my own boss. I haven't taken that off the table, but just like you, I have other aspiratons. Oddly enough, I always wanted to work in admissions /admissions counselor and you're saying you didn't enjoy it . Full time for 15 years. I sell everything you could imagine. I love this Job and will most likely do this full time for the rest of my life. However I did get started early in the game,and have the momentum/inventory to stay afloat when things are dry, and sources do dry up as they never last. Am I wealthy, LOL I wish cause then I could quit 🤣 The reality is I am doing fairly well,but I have almost 0 down time as I am always in search for inventory or listing or shipping. I worry about the future of this business on a daily basis, how long will this last,how long will I last. It is not a financially comfortable gig, but I made it pretty far. If I had a stable job would I quit to resell, absolutely not. I do this full time,and I refer to myself as a financial kamakzi as it is eather I win or go broke,and sometimes im a real hurt puppy 🤣 You know how they say do not try this at home 🤣🤣 that is me talking to your bank account 🤣 that is what reselling full time is like when you sell everything and give it your all for 15 years.

I completely agree with you, for me reselling PT is fun. Whenever I have gone out feeling like I HAVE to find something, then the fun just drains away and it feels like desperation. I end up buying things that aren't as profitable as I need them to be because I feel like I just need to get something, instead of waiting for the right thing. Most fulltime resellers that I saw drive crappy cars where crappy clothes live in crappy houses. That was enough for me to to stay away.

Besides the fact that this would only encompass the group of folks interested in selling clothing, you would have to assume everyone has the knowledge base and access to good deals on high end brands in their local areas. You ought to see what the thrift stores in my area are selling, cuz it's not happening here. I also think the inflated prices and shipping increases in addition to large companies like Amazon and chinese vendors basically giving things away online has pretty much destroyed the landscape for resellers in general. Lastly, reselling from home at a relatively low risk? For whom? People who do it as a side gig and can afford to burn their investments, or people who rely on it to pay their bills? She really is not encompassing all the perspectives here...

Yes reselling is hard. It’s a lot of work for little reward. The 3 figure sellers are pretty rare I think. And yes, Costa Rica is amazing! I love it there. I have a place and go a couple times a year! That’s how much I love it lol

Your thinking about needing to sell one item to pay a certain bill wasnt right. As a reseller nothing is guaranteed and you have to do research on items especially on amazon.

Yeah. Reselling is not hard. At least compared to running a concrete company and working 60 hours a week
