There really should be a list of red flag families for au pairs before they get stuck in families like that. How awful. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

Au Pair, Oh Paris I’ve seen it! I think the biggest red flag would be a family that is over eager to get you to their home in the middle of the school year.

As a host mom, I gotta give myself a pat on the back and maybe even tell my current AP to step her game up! I believe that AP’s should have disciplinary rights, since parents aren’t there all the time. Parents should let you know they’re style early on...my kid would have flown if they pulled that shenanigans. I’m also a firm believer about time off, who wouldn’t want a break?! Respect needs to be both ways. You also need to speak up, HP’s can’t read minds. As much as we sit down with you to voice our opinions, hopefully, that is your time to do that as well, at least, that’s what we do. Again, manners & respect are a two way street. Please stay safe and take care of your mental health!

I'm an au pair right now in Spain and I literally cannot imagine my situation looking like this. I am so happy you realize all the things wrong in that situation and how the family functioned as a unit. It is very upsetting that they treated you like that and it sounds like they took advantage of you in many different ways because you just didn't know what was normal and what is not. But for them to do that to anyone? Wow.

I normally never comment on videos but girl, I feel you. I worked for a vip family in the middle east and had been through the exact same situation you were. It was a different kind of hell and something I would never wish on anyone. The worst part of it is you cant really openly talk about it because theyre not just regular families but I admire you for finally speaking after some time. It takes courage. Salute!

I was going to AU pair but it honestly looks like a hit or miss kind of situation. People either LOVE it or HATE it, and idk if I want to take the risk and end up hating it. I’m going to teach English abroad instead. I’ve been a nanny/babysitter before and I’ve had some pretty bad experiences...I just feel like I don’t like being told what to do all the time or have the uncertainty of a schedule. I’m glad you at least got out of that situation and you’re sharing your story because it’s not always a positive experience.

thanks for sharing your story!! My first aupair experience was VERY similar, i was in italy last year, 19 leaving the US for the first time, waited it out until i was forced to look for a rematch. luckily i had made some great friends who helped me that week and ended up with a new family who truly made me feel welcomed and loved. Everything happens for a reason, I learned alot going forward. My rematch family was so great I went back to the same family a year later for a summer vacation

It’s so sad that you felt bad to quit when THEY were the ones taking advantage of you. Hearing your story makes me so angry that this happens all the time. I remember girls in my french classes would talk about literally having no time off on the weekends. It’s ridiculous! Something I wish I knew at the time and that most aupairs should know is that having an aupair is kind of a bargain. They pay for the visa but after that, what they usually pay is nothing in comparison to what they would pay a normal french babysitter or nanny. Families often make it seem like the aupair is the one getting the deal so they feel scared but leave but there are more families than there are aupairs

This is the opposite side when some families write down in their profile like « we’ll treat you like an elder sister », but in reality you’re more employée than a sis It was the same to me in China. I was a clown for the kid and knew this luxury chinese lifestyle. But it’s not for me. Maybe they expected it from previous au pair before, but I’m not like she. So I was really glad that I quit. And went traveling around South Asia and came back to my hometown What will you do now? Find a new family or? Stay strong, girl!!! I’m sure you’ll get through this sh**

Wow. I’m watching your videos as a future host mom in then the states and I can’t believe someone would treat you this way. Thank you for giving me some insight on the candidates that are requesting rematch. I hope that our au pair feels loved and part of our family when she comes. This worries me though as she is coming in the summer and the kids will be out of school. We were hoping to take her on a week long trip to water parks and the beach (definitely not the nice places you went) I’m hoping our match goes well.

I've been thinking about taking a gap year after I graduate high school and have been looking at being an Au Pair and doing lots of research. I've seen the stories and hope that if I become an Au Pair that this doesn't happen to me. I can't even be an Au Pair until almost December of next year since I'll be 18 then. I've been going back and forth on whether I want to be one but I also want to learn either Spanish, French or Chinese and this is the cheapest option. I'll have to wait until next year to see what I decide.

@@kirb644 Hello. I am taking a gap year though because of the virus I'm not going to au pair anymore, not this year anyways. I'm going to au pair a couple of summers from now though. But it's really hard to determine what next year will look like so I can't say for sure whether it's a good idea or not to take a gap year. I'd say make sure you weigh your options carefully before you decide to take a gap year. Make sure you have a general idea of what you want to do in your gap year and see if you have the funds to support what you want to do. I'd say still apply to colleges if that's what you want to do after your gap year is up just in case for some reason your gap year plan doesn't work out. Hope you figure out what you're going to do. A gap year can be rewarding though it's hard to travel and such during this time and you'll just have to wait and see what next year will entail.

As a new host family, this breaks my heart. We would never expect this from our Au pair. On the flip side, it’s been very hard to find an Au pair that feels ready to make the jump and match with us. I know it’s a hard decision but it’s been so much harder to match than I thought.

I'm an Au Pair in the Netherlands right now and I have been here since August 2019. I did rematch at the start because my first family were a bit mental lol but now I'm with my current family and I am having the time of my life. Everything is amazing right now, I get treated a lot better, I actually feel a part of the family and I don't have to hide myself away at the end of every day. However, besides all of this, I really want to go home now. I went home for Christmas and maybe 2 weeks in between my rematching stage, and I've been here full time since January. I really just want to go home now, I miss my family, friends and pets so much. And now everything with the Coronavirus is making me so much more scared because the number of cases in the Netherlands now is 82 and it's scaring me because the government might start closing down airports, cancelling flights etc if the situation gets any worse. I want to get home before all of that happens and I have no idea how to tell my host mum. I already feel so bad about it because they've given me so much joy and happiness and I feel like such a bitch if I tell them I'm leaving. I'm meant to sty until August but there is no way I can last until then. Any comments and relief is much welcome!

Have you ever hosted for a single father? I want to invite an au pair to me home to help with my daughter, but I wonder if it's unconventional. Also I live in the California in somewhat of a rural area so I wonder if anyone would want to travel here. It is a touristy area though. But I mostly wonder if my being a single father would be a comfortable situation for an au pair.

Most of the families who needs an aupair are fucked up, I had many host families exactly 8, and just trying and hoping ... They just like dont want to be with their kids, but they wants to seem to perfect family outside, but inside is a big mess as you described, no system or order in the household, even the parents cant disipline their child. You were lucky at least because even if an aupair doesnot have to clean etc they made u to do it anyway... I t also depends what is the nacionality of the Family. I dont mentions names here... You can find yourself on the street if they get angry or you do something wrong you supposed to but of course how we should know if noone tells us. Police or agencies are not helping you at all in emergency they will always support the family... I am very dissapointed in this Aupair program, this is like hiring a cheap servant from an other not well developed country so they think you are desperate and you cant do anything, u dont know where to go etc. Yes you feel urself in a cage... No private life at all. No rest on ur free days, u live ur boss and u always feel like u are working. I was hiding food in my room on my free days in the room just not to see to go to the kitchen and the livingroom to see them. I finished this life forever....I cant even watch through ur video sorry, just brought up many awful memories and pain:(
