Private ownership is very important in America. When you have digital media, you never really own anything, and you only watch so much content anyway. It's better to just buy the physical movie you want, and you get to just own the one movie you want to see forever.

All the major formats - physical and digital - are drm-encumbered. Ironically, the only way you can actually own a movie is to pirate it or learn to circumvent the copy protection on discs you own and rip them yourself. I don’t support piracy, but I’ve always been frustrated that the pirates get an all-around better experience than paying customers 🙄

In my opinion, Blu-Ray has been the BEST format for video. The quality of video and audio has been exceptional. Now with the addition of 4K, things have been taken to another level. Streaming is convenient, but can NOT compare to the quality and performance of Blu-Ray. PLUS being able to hold physical media in your hands after a purchase AND the bonus material are a slam dunk.

@@intetx I don't know all the technical specs. What I DO know is this; when I buy a 4K movie they always include a Blue-ray copy as well. I have a Samsung 4K tv and a Samsung 4K/Blu-Ray player. After watching a 4K disk and then watch a Blu-ray of the same movie immediately after, there is a noticeable big difference in the quality of the 4K over the Blu-ray movie. Blacks are much more pure, colors a bit more vivid. The biggest difference is in the darker colors. The best example I've found so far is in Game of Thrones, season 8, episode 3, "The Long Night". Because the first part of the show is very dark it was almost impossible to follow what was going on when watching HBO. The Blu-Ray is MUCH clearer than the HBO and the 4K is better yet. Also, you can't play a 4K disk on a Blu-ray player. You CAN play a blu_ray disk on a 4K player. You maintain the data is the same. Well, SOMETHING is different!

Blu-ray is the true legacy format. I think it will be viewed as the vinyl of video formats in the future. In terms of the quality/content quantity/price balance. DVD was revolutionary in so many ways, but the picture quality left something to be desired. The sweet spot is 2K/1080p. Kinda wish would could have skipped DVD and gone straight to blu-ray as a society. Now we're saddled with this SD format that's just going to keep hanging on and will always have more content on it than Blu-ray.

I price-followed some movies on Amazon with the Honey-app, and got Dunkirk and Apocalypse Now, both the 4k's, for $9:99 each. Also, there are many deals on Amazon for 3 or 4 4k's for $50; I'm looking at a deal right now where selected 4k movies are two for $30, including Saving Private Ryan, Blade Runner (2049), The Dark Knight and many more. I've never looked and there hasn't been some deal or other. I know it's not $5/movie, but I think it's worth it: I'm future-proofing myself! I buy Bluray's; DVD's I haven't bought new for several years, unless it's something only available on DVD, like A Month in the Country. I buy them used sometimes, if it's a movie I like but don't love; then I buy Bluray or 4k.

I think both physical media and streaming have their purposes. For first-time watching and movies that I want to watch, but will likely not watch countless times afterwards, I will stream them, it's cheaper. For movies and series that I love and will watch over and over again, then I'll buy it on Blu-ray. That way, I own it. As somebody who has spent a considerable amount of money on a dedicated theater room, I will always choose a physical disc. Whether you stream or download full rips the sound suffers.A high end system especially exposes this. What really irritates me is the poor mastering of sound on some movies. Disney is the biggest culprit for this. As an example Master and Commander trumps most modern movies and thats only 5.1

Another voice: First off, to fully realize the benefit of 4k BD's one needs a display specifically designed for that format. Many cineasts would be loathe to part with their discontinued non-4k capable Pioneer Kuro plasma display. They have achieved cult status in the secondary market. It is not necessary to go 4k to appreciate the immense leap in enjoyment of a BD over a DVD. The reason there is a market for physical Blu-ray discs is because video looks looks better and audio sounds better than what the consumer gets when purchasing a viewing of a movie that is streamed. To many, perhaps the majority, that fact does not matter since neither their video gear nor their audio gear are of sufficient quality to notice a major difference or any difference. So what we have in the audio and video markets of today is the masses that are perfectly happy streaming both video and sound and the cineasts and audiophiles that are willing to devote a major expenditure for the appropriate gear in order to experience what the physical disc has to offer. Regarding the availability of films that have been transferred to Blu-ray. There is a huge volume of DVD's that have yet to be transferred to BD. Even amongst the greatest 2000 films of all time as rated by "They Shoot Pictures Don't They" many have as yet not been transferred to BD. It's irritating but factual. New releases of older films are being released all of the time so ya just gotta wait for that one movie you just gotta have. One more topic. The element (the copy of the film itself) and the transfer to digital as the narrator stated is of extreme importance. The best American company by far in this department is Criterion. The Criterion release is always the reference version of a film.

So I buy discs to always have them anytime I want to see it and not be at the mercy of licensing agreements. I buy used as much as I can. I'm happy with DVD if that is all that's available. Another thing, I don't always want a pristine shiny picture if the movie wasn't filmed that way. Like The Godfather or some old school Clint Eastwood films. For me, that grainy texture adds to the character of a film.

I collect Blu-ray and it’s my ideal format and I love commentaries, extras, etc. on one disc. However, a lot of fantastic titles still haven’t been (and likely may never be) released on Blu-ray, so finding them on DVD or even VHS is necessary, so I have tons of DVDs and a few VHS tapes. Plus, used DVDs are very cheap now, so I’ll grab a title because it’s so inexpensive, even though I’d ideally prefer it on Blu-ray. The best thing about Blu-ray players is that they are backwards compatible and you can play DVDs on the same player. 4K seems a bit excessive and I can’t afford getting a new player and buying the more expensive 4K titles. I saw Suspiria (1977) 4K that really piqued my interest, but it was a $60+ steelbook. Granted, it’s a Synapse release with all the bells and whistles and will probably be worth 3x that or more in a couple years, but it simply doesn’t justify the cost. If you have t he funds, then I can see going 4K as an option. I think streaming is cool if it’s a casual viewing, but if it’s a film I love, I have to own it on physical media. I think it’s an OCD situation, but I accept that fact.

Just to add my 2 1/2 cents, give me physical media any day. I've been a collector since the super 8mm film days, and to me there was nothing cooler than threading the film into the projector and then dimming the lights for the evening's entertainment. I still dim the lights, and I'll make sure to crank up the speakers and nuke some popcorn as well. I'll also say that watching a movie on a little cell phone does not compare to watching it on a large screen tv at home. I only did that when I was trucking and I had no other way of movie watching at the time. Yeah, I truly love my collection. If I'm stuck at home, I'll pull something off the shelf and enjoy it.

Four years from Blu-Rays initial release, I literally heard ALL of these points for collecting for DVD. Then, over a decade after Blu-Rays were introduced, stuff that I never thought would be released on Blu-ray, because individual studios did not seem to want to transfer titles that they deemed "unpopular", were eventually transferred. ....this happened, because Blu-Ray became the "DVD" of this generation. This is a great thing, because I own high-quality transfers of things I thought would forever be in standard definition. Scooby-Doo, Teen Titans (2004), Batman Beyond: The Movie, Popeye: The 1940's Color Cartoons, etc. ...but to think that not a lot of media will be mastered to a HDR 4K Blu-Rays, is short-sided. For whatever you want to watch, buy it in the best current possible media, so that you can enjoy it now. Just never be so conceited that one form of media, will be the best transfer of said print, that will be available in your lifetime.

Thank you for making Blu-ray still relevant. And yes, I am an "Extras" guy myself. Although I buy Blu-rays for the movies but I'd often play the Extras first before the movie. And more often than not, I don't play the movies themselves. It's the Extras that I find to be more fascinating and engaging than the movie itself. Besides, I think physical media offer a more personal and social interaction. Not only in terms of you having to manually switching the system on to play the discs but also when you play movies on the TV there's more chance of other people joining you as well like when you go to the theater. Compared to streaming movies since it is offered to a personal viewing on your phone or your other private devices. Even though streaming is also available on Smart TVs and you could watch the movie with your loved ones too. But the point is that Blu-rays, as with other physical media offers more interaction. And I do agree that not all the movies are available on streaming. Sometimes, they even took out some of the movies from their programming. Like the movie "Copycat". I love that movie and it used to be on Netflix but after a while I couldn't find it anymore. When I search for it, the list showed me other alternatives to the similar genre; which is frustrating.

I say yes, collecting blu-ray is still relevant going into 2020 as streaming is at the mercy of ISP's and studio's trying to start their own online services for their own movie libraries. If you lose internet connection or there's a contract dispute then you still have access to your physical movie library at home.

I've gone broke on collecting movies!...😁. And yet still I do. My parents gave me my 1st VCR when I was in high school. The only physical media that has "value add" is Blu-ray. You can play DVD's in them, thanks to backward compatibly. You don't have to go REALLY broke & buy specialty electronics. They're even competitively priced. Now, I'm dabbling on digital download, & it really does have a place alongside hardcopy, but the Blu-ray format gives one more control in finding specific scenes. Oh, yeah, even Blu-ray players are remarkably affordable. I had to replace mine recently & found a barebones Philips model for $50. Like I said, I'm broke & even $50 is a bit painful to drop, BUT, I checked out 4K units for the giggles of it & they STARTED at $100! Didn't even look at 3D units because I'd have to sink a crapton of money on a new 3D TV & 3D format discs!

I'm not a movie guy. I do like streaming for the opportunity to watch movies I otherwise wouldn't. And I like I to watch movies I've never heard of before. But I would only want to physically own 2% of the movies I've seen. And about half of that 2% I would care about owning in HD. So roughly 1 out every 100 movies I watch, I would have any interest in owning on bluray.

Going to the smaller companies that release the more obscure titles I'd put Flicker Alley in there as well.. Back in 2011 I went to TIFF Bell Lightbox (Toronto International Film Fest) and they were doing a Tim Burton retrospective (Exhibition/ Film screenings - Film that was influential to Burton's vision) They did a Batman/Batman Returns double feature, one film that was an influence to Bob Kane's vision of Batman back in the 30's was a film called The Man Who Laughs (1928) which was the key piece for the look of The Joker. It is a film that I never thought would see the light of day being a silent film from that era, but Flicker Alley picked up the rights from Universal Pictures and it was released this past June..

My biggest reason for collecting physical media is to wage my own little personal battle against censorship. Streaming channels and Television/Cable TV can and eventually will edit the content that they broadcast. Take the silly, recent example of this when Canadian TV cut the Donald Trump scene from "Home Alone 2". Bottom line, that was an example of censorship in action, and that's the biggest reason I collect physical media.

I have loved the format since the days of going to Circuit City and perusing their 12-15 title "Blu-ray section." Remember when you could say you literally owned every Blu-ray disc released? I certainly go for 4K for every new movie I buy, when available. (These releases almost always include a standard Blu-ray copy as well.) But I still collect new Blu-rays when there is no 4K option. Without physical media, you can say goodbye to your favorite films as produced. Because inevitable alterations, "special editions," and especially corporate CENSORSHIP of digital libraries are a real threat.

To me, it's a question of diminishing returns - on an HD TV, I could clearly tell there was a huge difference between DVD and Blu-Ray - heck even between DVD and 720p the difference was night-and-day but I do now have a 4K TV and unless I see them very up-close and side-by-side, I can't really tell the difference between 1080p and UHD, if they come from the same master. Not to mention that a huge chunk of UHD releases are upscaled anyway. And since 1080p is good enough to be projected in a cinema (most cinemas even today have 2K SDR projectors and even in film days, the distribution prints wouldn't really resolve beyond 2K) I'm quite happy sticking to regular Blu-Ray.

My first home theater rig was a 19 inch Sony Trinitron, and a JVC Stereo VCR running through my Carver C1 pre-amp and Carver M-1.5t amplifiers and Cerwin Vega speakers. I had picked up a Fosgate 3601 matrix processor that created a phantom center channel and sent a mono signal to the rear speakers. This was in 1985 and I used to impress my friends with Top Gun. We have come so far and I have had every iteration of A/V product as we've inched along to today's Nirvana of technology. I got rid of all my VHS tapes when DVD emerged, and all my DVDs when 1080p came out. I bought an HD DVD and a Blu Ray player because I just couldn't wait. I didn't buy into 3D, although it is pretty cool, or the curved screen nonsense but I admit that a 4K disc can look startlingly dynamic but blu ray is still and will remain very relevant.
