I'm a movie collector and happy with 4k. Very rarely do I buy 4k titles that I already own on Bluray. It either has to be on sale or an older movie shot on 35mm where the improvements are monumental.

In my case, it's the law of diminishing returns that kicks in.... I made the jump to Blu-ray from DVD and though I still collect both, these 68 year old eyes and ears wouldn't be able to discern the difference between Blu-ray and 4K on the home theatre system I have. I didn't bother with adopting 3D TV when it was the hot thing either. For me, it's also about the cost to upgrade since it would entail getting a new player (and OPPOs aren't available anymore), a new receiver/amp system and upgrading the speaker system to 7.1 or higher... As a semi-retired person I can't justify that kind of expense for so little an improvement to my home movie experience. 5.1 audio and 1080p resolution is just fine by me... 4K? No thanks.

Makes sense but if you buy a new TV they are almost all 4k HDR so you would still get the pop from hdr. But also 4k TV's have to upscale blu-rays so you are getting better resolution just by buying a new TV. 4k just has the HDR over blu-rays. I'm only upgraded a few of my all time favorite movies that are on DVD. I'm not gonna upgrade my Blu-rays unless the Blu-ray was subpar. Visually stunning movies can benefit from 4k in my opinion because of the HDR.

I can see a difference but I went from a 32 TV wirh 1080i, Games were 720p, to a 55 in 4k HDR TV. But it is just a TLC brand. So I'll upgrade down the road if I feel it's not enough. But right now everything is vastly improved. And HDR is no joke.

You nailed it. Not seeing a difference, to me, comes down to your equipment. These cheap 4K TVs, even when they support HDR, may not produce an impactful HDR picture. I have a 42" TCL 4 series. It's a good TV. Actually, it's a good HDTV, but it is not a good 4K TV. It supports HDR signals, but it can't produce deep blacks and bright highlights, and I don't know what the color volume is, but I am sure it is not very expansive. And there are a lot of these types of TVs out there. On my LG OLED, you see a difference, no doubt. As for cost, discs are expensive. I watch videos like yours to see if the upgrade of movies I already own are worth it. A lot of catalogue titles are actually some of the best upgrades. It is like seeing the movies for the first time. The depth, the color, the image is just overall more impactful and I find that along with the audio upgrades make the viewing more immersive. Like you, this is my hobby. I don't own a boat, a bike, go on lavish vacations, etc. so this is my way to relax and have a good time in my spare time. I just look for deals. I wait for sales. I buy second-hand. It works for me.

It doesn't only come down to equipment though, as not all 4k discs have HDR or a better master, which means that the resolution may be the only difference (leaving sound out of it as we'e talking visuals). Most people sit too far from their TV's to physically be able to tell the difference between 2160p and 1080p, so in those cases even a great system can fail to produce value in the 4k option. This goes to another point that the resolution is becoming too much of a feature, especially with the coming 8k. The resolution is probably the least of the advantages of the 4k format, and it's HDR that's the big advantage. The industry should focus more on things like that and less on resolution which will be irrelevant for consumers until the average TV size has increased a ton. As for buying movies, I wish that there was a digital option that were of 4k BD quality. Sure, the file sizes are huge (although could be gotten down a bit with better compression technology as the BD standard isn't great there) but I enjoy having movies on my home media server and not to have to store the discs where they are visible. As it is I have to rip them myself.

If you have a good set up, you CANNOT beat a 4K movie. Some of them admittedly aren't really an upgrade over their blu ray counter parts, but the majority of films are. I watched Interstellar in 4K last week and I was blown away, especially during the IMAX scenes, it was utterly gorgeous and the sound was incredible! A 4K Netflix film is nowhere near the quality of the same film on a disc. Netflix is great and very handy to have, but for a true movie experience, you will never beat physical media.

I think the bandwidth and bit rate transfer is a factor between streaming and discs. Of course bandwidth doesn't make sense for discs but you know what I mean.
@richardskelding4528
@richardskelding4528 4 года назад
@@StaticBlaster It's a definite factor, streaming services have to condense files in order to send them over the net. That results in a 4K show/film being transferred over the internet at about 15mbps whereas on disc it can transfer up to something like 130mbps so you're getting far more data which means a less compressed picture, the sound is also a lot better. Netflix is great, but you're never going to get a proper experience from it unfortunately.

I won't buy a new release unless its 4K. Some of my collection will probably stay Blu-ray, but when a favorite is truly remastered ( The Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life, 2001, etc) I will selectively upgrade. Mine is not a complaint about 4K, but the industry in general. When they started cancelling production of 3D sets for 4K, it marginalized many of us into a category of those who now have to pay top dollar to retain our equipment. Suddenly we have to sacrifice immersion for clarity of picture. Horsecrap. We paid $400 to $600 for our 3D sets. Now we have to look under rocks for videocards, drivers, active glasses, etc to convert to video projection if our tvs ever go down (my current Vizio is 10 years old this year). What I like about 4K (and higher)? Well, it means that the disks will be coupled with higher quality standard blu rays upon release. It's not a total loss. But the industry makes me sick. When we hear of killing physical media in favor of streaming, for example. Consumers are the pawns for industry greed, and we are powerless to do anything about it.

First of all, not all people who buy physical media 'collect' as you say. You collect. I don't. Collecting is an effort get something just to have it. I buy physical media because I like to have acess to movies in the best format and maintain control to acess to that media instead of depending on its availability in the streaming market. It's about taking control over my fate. I don't need to worry about someone's acess to licensed media when I have a license myself. That being said, I don't disagree with your premise. I buy 4K because this is what I want and I have the facilities to play it back under the best audio and video conditions. Nobody needs to 'buy again' to move to 4K. I generally avoid double dipping unless I can find a 3D Blu-ray of a movie that I only had in 2D. Otherwise, what's on DVD remains so. What is on Blu-ray remains so. What is on 3D Blu-ray remains so. I still buy DVD, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray and 4K. I'm free of the burden of 'collecting'. I rip my movies to mkv and store them to a server.

I visit your channel occasionally for information and not to further my effort to 'collect'. I already have more stuff than I need. You made excellent points and I think the best point you made... "IT HAS TO BE WORTH IT TO YOU." I grew up buying VHS..sold off what I could to replace them with Laserdiscs....then shortly after Blurays/HD-DVDs. Each time selling one former format at a fraction to be replaced by the latest format at a much higher cost. When 4K was announced, I looked at my vast bluray collection and said....NOPE. not again. I immediately started thinking I should have skipped Bluray and waiting for 4K...or maybe skip 4K and wait for 8K? So for me it is no longer worth it for me to continue. I should have stopped back in the DVD days, but the addiction of owning legit copies of movies I loved was very real for me. Seeing the difference in quality matter to me the most at that time in my life as well. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer the highest quality media over streaming any day...it is just my priorities have changed in life. Going out, exploring the world, and seeing the places I've only seen in movies is now more important to me than having the latest and greatest. Looking back, I think I would much prefer all the original money I spent over the collection I amassed. Yes it feels great to own a movie I love, but realistically how many times have I re-watched any of my movies, when I keep getting new ones? If I knew now back then, I think I would still invest in the hardware that plays the latest media, but NEVER own the media for too long. if I were in the game now, I'd buy a 4K disc, watch the movie and its content, then sell it immediately to recoup funds for my next purchase. No longer having a vast collection taking up so much space in my home, and no longer feeling regret with every upgrade in technology. Of course the satisfaction and enjoyment of owning and watching a film you love in the highest possible quality will always be worth it to others. It was for me for a very long time. I'm not mad at that or anyone who finds enjoyment in that. I genuinely hope everyone that already has 4K and those that are going into 4K gets to enjoys all of their 4K experiences. I'm just sharing my perspective from a person who was a former movie collector and formerly heavily invested into UPGRADING my movie watching experience for the best possible quality.

I finally have got into 4k Because I have a 4k TV and and Xbox one X so I can veiw them. But because I never fully got into bluray. There's DVD or movies I don't own that I want to get on 4k but only movies that I think would visually benefit from a great picture and the bright lights of HDR. Actually HDR was the selling point. Lights, fires, and bright colors just pop off the screen. It's sureal. But a lot of movies have great Blu-ray transfers and a lot of movies are not visual enough or great enough to upgrade. Heck, I have a 120 inch projection screen and a Canon LCD projector and even when watching a VHS of Disney's 'Snow White' (even without better Blu-ray or 4K resolution), the movie looked amazing. The colours were vivid, the sound was great, etc, so even though I'm buying Blu-ray movies (and still some DVD's here and there), I can't be bothered shelling out extra bucks for 4K versions. Eventually, one gets tired of the format wars and 8K will be next and maybe 12K beyond that, so at some point one has to be happy with what one has already. It's a personal choice, of course. :)

#MovieGuy365, I love supporting the (overall) best format on physical media-4K. While 4K Blu-rays are generally a little pricey, I find that the value is worth it (generally the best picture and audio quality, plus usually includes standard Blu-ray and digital copy). I have many standard Blu-rays and even more standard DVDs. If a title I already own on one of those formats is released on 4K Blu-ray, I put it through this litmus test to determine whether to get the 4K Blu-ray or not: 1) is it one of my favorite movies, 2) is it the kind of movie that lends itself to 4K (if it’s a relatively low-key movie like a drama, it might not be a priority compared to action/sci-fi/horror), 3) does it have rewatchability for me (which ties in with #1).

I used to collect DVD's then somewhat moved onto Blu-ray's. However, I've got no intention of ever buying into the 4k format. I don't understand why the cost is so much higher. Here in the UK, a DVD generally costs £10, Blu-ray's cost £15 and 4K's cost £20+. However, I'm assuming that all 3 formats are churned out by factories for peanuts but it's as if you have to pay more for blu-ray and 4k because the picture quality is better. It's all just data at the end of the day, just a bunch of 0's and 1's, and should be as cheap as chips. Since getting married and having a kid back in 2008, I'm finding myself increasingly more skint as the years go on. I very rarely ever buy discs anymore and generally just stream movies I want to see rather than purchasing them out right. It's also a sickner that the re-sale price of most disc's (DVD's especially) is pretty much worthless (I'm not talking rare stuff here). I've probably spent thousands over the years but I wouldn't be surprised if each disc was only worth around £1, if I ever came to sell them. I just can't see a point in investing in them anymore.

segagagagagagaga Hi there just to say you would get a shock if you decided to sell your DVDs, some are Expensive due to low availability but most were produced in large numbers so trying to sell them on line you may be luck if you could get a pound after packing and postage, and worst selling to games shops or places that may buy dvd you’d be lucky if they gave you 1pence for each disc. Keep your collection and enjoy.

I have a main reason why I still buy some DVDs (even if my collection also has BluRays and a few 4Ks). Where in live in Europe the DVDs always have the bigger cases with the bigger pictures on the cover. If I really like some cover of a film that a DVD has it.. I will buy that also cuz the picture is bigger than the one with the blurays. (and usuaIIy the DVDs are fairIy cheap too). Sometimes I even take out the bluray from the bluray case and put it into the DVD case (if I love that movie and I want to display it with a bigger picture / frontal view).

Here is the thing with resolution, there is a big difference just between 1080p and 4k. But it comes down to not only the quality of the TV or projector, but the size of the picture. The bigger the size the bigger the difference. I used to have just an 65´LCD/LED 4K TV, that didnt really have any HDR worth mentioning. Yeah, I didnt see that much of a difference unless I switched immediately between that and the blu-ray. However, now I have an Epson TW9400 on a projector screen of 104´. There is a big difference just in the resolution now, dont have to switch between 4k and regular blu-ray to see it. And it doesnt need to be native 4k movies finished in 4k. Even a CGI heavy movie like Ready Player One, that was finished in 2k, looks allot better in 4k. So the resolutions does make a difference, but it comes down to how big your screen is. And like you said, it depends on your equipment, not all TV´s or projectors are equal and the same thing goes for the discs. There are literally hundreds of blu-rays that look horrible, where they did an abysmal job with the transfer. And Im not even going to talk about DVD. I cant watch those anymore. Bought a series a few years ago because it just doesnt exist in any other format and I felt a bit nostalgic about it. Horrible picture, shut it off after 5 minutes... But that one Im going to blame on the studio that did the transfer because unless my nostalgic memory for it is deceiving me, it didnt look that bad when it was on TV. Still, its baffling that DVD´s are still selling that well and better then blu-ray!

I sold all of my DVDs in 2006 knowing that the hi def format wars were starting up and that I would eventually want to upgrade to HD. Of course since then so many more options have occurred that make access to movies easier so I felt less of a need to collect everything. But what has happened is I have learned to be patient and you can usually pick up most blu rays now for a few dollars if you wait a few months. The same thing will happen with 4K discs, I say if you are worried about buying everything all over again, just be patient and pick them up when you find them cheap at garage sales thrift stores etc and upgrade cheaply and slowly. That little hunt for cheap discs is part of the thrill now. I dont have the 6000 discs I did when I had DVDs any more but I have probably 1000+ blu rays that I have purchased of most of my favorite movies for under $5 each.

When it comes to whether or not I'm willing to buy all the movies I already own on 1080p Blu-Ray all over again, it really depends on just how much I love the movie in question. If it's one of my favorite movies of all time, especially if it's one that I think would *massively* benefit from the enhancements of the 4K Blu-Ray format even if its not digitally mastered in 4K resolution (I'm honestly way more interested in Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision and HDR than 4K resolution alone), then I'll gladly buy it all over again even if I already own it on regular Blu-Ray. If it's one I love enough that I already own a physical copy (whether it be 1080p Blu-Ray or DVD), but not enough to think that buying it again on 4K Blu-Ray is worth it (especially if its visuals and sound aren't really that impressive even on 1080p Blu-Ray to the point that not even Atmos, DV or HDR would improve it all that much), I'll just stick with what I've already got.

Way less compression on a 2k DI UHD disc than Blu-ray, but no one ever talks about that. On the Blu-ray, if you go up close to the screen, details like film grain are made up of little digital squiggles and blocks, but on the 4K disc, those grains are better resolved and a granular looking by comparison. Seems to me that if the smallest 'grain' of the picture takes up like 9pixels on a 4K TV, and it is represented as a square block bc of compression, it's the compression improvement more than the number of pixels which makes certain 2K Di 4K movies look so good. Yes, there's HDR and DV as well, but that doesn't explain why some of the crispest looking movies are 2K DI.

It’s because most films nowadays are filmed on digital, whereas they used to be on film, which supports up to 12k resolution, so it’s a native 4K. A lot of movies nowadays, such as the marvel movies, are upscaled from 2k di’s (digital intermediates) because the special effects are rendered at 2k. Hopefully that makes sense.

I continue to buy DVD's of movies that are not dependent on a higher resolution (Dramas, comedies, biographies, etc.) The DVD format is also good for classic TV shows. The #1 thing to think about is ownership. If you buy the discs, you can hold it & you can play it without requiring an internet or cellular connection. My opinion.

I don't have a 4K TV yet, but I decided to buy a 4K blu-ray player anyway. Why? Because it can play 4K discs on a regular HD TV, plus it still plays all regular blu-rays and DVDs. And whenever I am ready to make the upgrade to a 4K TV, I will already have some 4K discs as well as the player waiting to go. And because there are not that many titles I want to buy on 4K UHD disc, I don't think it will cost me that much in the long run. I will only upgrade the movies that I really love or which really deserve it for the visuals - 2001: A Space Odyssey being one good example. For regular comedies or serious dramas, standard blu-ray should be good enough. Oh and lastly, pretty much every 4K title you buy comes with a standard blu-ray disc included so you might as well get two for the price of one (even if that price is a bit more expensive than just buying the blu-ray alone).

to me, it's a combination of things. My collection is about 3500 movies big. I did buy a lot of blu-ray movies I already had in DVD format (and VHS before that), because although I did spend the same amount again, it still was "only" about the same amount for DVD and blu-ray. And to me, the step-up in quality between DVD and blu-ray warranted this double purchase. But now, the price difference of 4K and blu-ray, combined with the (somewhat lesser) step-up in quality doesn't make me buy the same discs in 4K. There are exceptions of course. Everybody has their favorite movies, and these to me are the movies I will buy over and over again in every new format, if it only improves my viewing experience of that movie. But my limited experience with 4K leads me to believe it's the oldest movies (that were shot with real film instead of digitally) that benefit the most from the 4K upgrade. And since new movies all get shot digitally, less and less movies warrant (to me at least) the extra cost of 4K over blu-ray

So, might as well just go after the Blu-ray and call it a day. I’m not excited about buying Spider-Man or Indiana Jones for the fifth or sixth time, and the honest truth is, there are fewer and fewer new titles coming out that I care about. Most of what I’m interested in going after is a catalog title, and if it comes down to buying a title I already own on DVD or Blu-ray on 4K or using that money to buy a title I’ve never owned on DVD, the choice is easy for me. I’m not trying to show off some home theater system. I just don’t want to be dependent on cable or streaming for my entertainment. That’s it.

Very few movies are true 4K. Especially if they have the special effects. 4K rendering of effects is not just costly, but slow as hell! Literally, the system could take 4-6 months to render that film once finished, just one time! And if anything interrupts that render cycle? It has to start completely over. Even 1080p movies with lots of special effects films can take days/weeks to render the final film.

Great and non biased video man, thumbs up! I started collecting VHS tapes and collected a ton, then when DVDs started getting cheap, jumped to DVD. However, at least in Japan where I live, a majority of the non-bockbuster Blurays cost a fortune like say 60 bucks a movie a so and being a collector of all sorts, there's no way in hell I'm wasting my money on that transition and like you said, even they are not always real 4K. Most of all, this is a nonstop evolution train and I think as you finally showed, most people are happy and really don't see a huge jump even from DVD to Bluray with "regular" affordable equipment.

Picture aside, 4k UHD audio is SUPREME! With Atmos/DTSX, the audio data is like 5x larger. That means higher dynamic range, better clarity, possible lower end extension and sampling rate. I can maybe understand someone deciding not to purchase 4k UHD if they watch on a TV & use the TV speakers, but if you have a better audio setup (at least a nicer soundbar & sub, hopefully surrounds) it's so much better. *There is great master audio on Blu-ray but... #MovieGuy365

Sure 4K might be better than Blu-ray, but to get 4K you gotta buy a new TV and player and it all just seems like a money racket to me. I won’t be converting again (already did VHS to DVD to Blu-ray) and I don’t completely trust digital, but to each their own.

I already had the 25th Anniversary Box set but when it dropped on 4K., I had to pick it up. They did an AMAZING job with the transfer. Also, even 4K digital copies DO NOT look as good as the physical disc copy on 4K Blu-Ray. Still have my VHS copies of things too!

The reason I’m not fully into 4K yet is simple: My projector currently doesn’t support it. I’ll be upgrading the projector at some point and will be ready then. (My Denon AV Receiver already supports 4K and I’ll upgrade my Blu-ray player at the same time I purchase a new projector.). In the meantime most of my new physical media purchases have been 4K/Blu-ray combo packs. (I have to admit to “purchasing” some fav movies via Digital HD when the price goes under $5.00. In some cases they’re replacing DVDs I purchased 10-15 years ago and I just can’t help myself!)

Most movies are not mastered in 4K. 4K at best is just encoded with extra algorithm such as HDR, and the 4K tv able to upscale the extra data encoded in the disc. Plus the option of including Dolby atmos. It is actually false advertising. The tv may be able to play 4K, but mastering is not. I do see the better picture on my girlfriends 4K tv due to the better tv up scaling, and HDR, or Dolby Vision. It is a better picture, but not so much dramatic as the difference between dvd. To Blu-ray. It’s better, just slightly; but hardly true 4K source material.

Forgot a couple points, one for 4K format having less compression and more efficient compression at the same file size using h265 instead of h264 and also the bitrate is sky high. I’ve seen 100megabit on some 4K and bluray is like 17-35!

It’s crazy to think but most people that aren’t physical media enthusiasts haven’t even upgraded to Blu-ray yet. 4K will always be a niche product.

The cheap TVs have added to the quality issues to full represent the 4k quality advantage. Many 4k discs are limited with fully Quality due to the cost to render CGI as you stated. Being 53 Im limited on space. I like collecting physical media. I started with video tape. In the end of my run. I had collected 2000 tapes and 500 pre recorded tapes. I in the end had to get rid of most. I just simply began as a collector ended up a hoader. Many tapes were transfered to recordable dvd. It was simple I collected to much. Irony Collect with caution. Good Video😎

I'm planning to go through my collection and get rid of some. It's hard if I know I'll watch it. Some defently some I'll always have. I collect different genres. So I get attached to certain types of movies. But I need to get rid of just ok movies and even mainstream movies that aren't really my type of movie per say.

Too many people buy a 4k large screen tv and then think everyone should sit farther back. View too far away and no one can see the difference in hd vs uhd (4k). The opposite is true, i.e. 4k is great because you can and should sit closer to the screen and see the outstanding detail. To take advantage of your 4k tv, put in a 4k disc and sit as close as practical to the screen, and get that big screen cinema experience in your home. There are charts with a simple google search that calculate ideal viewing distance for 4k screens when viewing 4k content. For example, with my 55 inch 4k tv I sit about 6 feet from the screen which is right in the middle of the suggested distance.

To me, each time we step up, it’s been to less effect. VHS to DVD was an amazing step up... DVD to BR was decent step... with BR to 4K is noticeable on larger televisions, but not exactly game changing.

My best friend has a much larger screen (85”, I think), and there is a noticeable difference in sharpness when you play a BR versus a 4K at that size, but in the 65” range it’s a minimal effect. You can see it but (to me) it’s nothing worth spending the extra money on.
@Eyrrll

@@jaysbakes37 To be fair, it should not require an OLED to (sometimes more than others) see a big difference. If you are trying to sell your product to a wider audience, then it needs to be distinguishable to the wider audience on equipment attained with a reasonable budget, because the bulk of that audience tries to buy things on a reasonable budget. (Grats on the OLED btw, they are sweet.) Anyway, the difference between VHS and DVD was easily detected on nearly any color TV of that era. It was that dramatic. All I am saying is that the “jumps” from format to format become less dramatic as each one happens unless you are also getting bigger and bigger screens along the way.

I don't quite agree with these 5 arguments but they are valid. There are 2 more that as equally important that were omitted in the video. 1. The Bluray format will be the last format on which movies are released regardless of their popularity. Some less successful or popular are not even on the Bluray 14 years after its release. DVDs are still in circulation and streaming has become the standard. With all that in mind one can safely assume that 4K will be a very niche format for selected titles and limited usage. Just like all surround sounds beyond 5.1. 2. Having CGI and VFX background I know most movies from late 90s and 00s have been rendered at HD and/or 1080 and converting them into 4K is very expensive OR crappy. With that in mind no one is in a hurry to do that or it will never be done. Which immediately brings back p.1

My concern isn't the disc, per se. If it's 4K content on a 4K disc, looks amazing, great. I'm all for it. Years ago, I directed a short film before 4K was even thing, but I hired a DP to shoot it in 4K, knowing that 4K would be a thing in the very near future--and here we are. If I'm being honest, my old tired eyes, confined by the limitations of bifocals, can't see much of a difference between 1080 HD and 4K, but intellectually, professionally, I'm well aware of the difference. Hence, you shoot on the very best available, so that footage, worst case, will always be backwards compatible. You can watch that 4K footage on a 4K screen or render it "down" to 1080p or even SD, and its perfectly watchable on a 1080 or SD screen, respectively. But try doing it the other way around, such as editing some older SD clips into your 4K project, and well, you're facing some real challenges to say the least. So, my priority when purchasing any sort of media devise (TV, player, computer) is balancing between forward thinking and backwards compatibility. I want a laptop with the best processor and largest harddrive available, but still able to run my legacy software. In the case of 4K, the issue isn't the disc or the player, per se (i.e. a Blu-ray player will typically play BD's, DVD's and even CD's), the issue is the backwards compatibility of the television it's being displayed on--thus, the reason I'm mortified at the prospect of upgrading to a 4K television set. Let me explain: My brother calls me a "media hoarder" and I can't really argue with that. I have a good forty years worth of physical media on my shelves (and I'm still buying like a madman) from Blu-ray, DVD, VHS, all the way down to CD, cassette, LP--and giving up any of it will require prying it from my cold, dead hands. Almost every night, I curl up in bed and watch a DVD box set of some old TV show from the 1960's to the 1990's that I loved as a kid and young adult, shows that are mostly unavailable on Blu-ray, let alone 4K--even if I wanted to replace them. These old shows look fantastic, sharp, crisp, displayed just as they were intended on an old school, square 4:3 SD television, which I still have in my bedroom, feeling like a comfortable old leather glove. Meanwhile, downstairs, I have a fantastic 1080 HDTV which will dazzle any Blu-ray or HD cable broadcast you throw at it. But the beauty of it is, my HDTV combined with my Sony Blu-ray player (which is actually 3D compatible) is fully backwards compatible when displaying Blu-ray or DVD. For example, I've been watching a DVD box set of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."--and it looks just as sharp and crisp on my HDTV (via an HDMI connection) as it does on my old SD television upstairs. There isn't even a hint of blur or pixilation. The same is generally true for watching SD material via Roku or a handful of channels still broadcasting in SD on cable. In general, the picture looks just fine on my HDTV. Furthermore, and I won't blame you for laughing at this: I actually have a Sony Blu-ray player attached to my old 4:3 SD television via an HDMI to RCA composite adapter. I know, I know--what?--WHY?? My answer is simple--backwards compatibility. I can watch my old favorites in bed on my comfy old TV, but still pop in a Blu-ray of "Captain America: Civil War," if I feel like it. It looks just fine from my bed, with black bars top and bottom to maintain its 16:9 image. Bottom line, I love options. But what will happen when one or both my TVs ultimately breaks down and I have to replace it? Most of the TV's being sold now are only 4K. My brother just bought one. It's big, it's awesome...and everything on it looks like crap. Broadcast/cable TV which is still in 1080 HD (in most markets) looks like crap on a 4K television. Even with my crappy eyes, it looks soft and fussy. I have a Roku which is 4K ready, but in our area, the internet sucks. It's hard enough to stream in HD, let alone 4K. On my brother's brand new (major name brand) 4K TV, streaming looks horrible. And while I suspect a standard Blu-ray disc will probably look okay on a 4K set, I shudder to think what a DVD will look like--and I have tons that are irreplaceable. So, no, I'm not looking forward to buying a television where only a niche handful of 4K discs are watchable, while everything else--including broadcast HD television!!--looks godawful...because it isn't backwards compatible.

1. Don’t see a difference. I agree... IF you are watching on a small screen (below 70”). I have a projector and a 100” screen and the difference is pretty noticeable. 2. Cost. & 3. Don’t want to buy again (these are pretty much the same) 100% agree. 4K is expensive. And it’s no longer the most convenient way to watch movies. We’ve seen VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and now 4K Blu-ray. If you’ve bought any movies multiple times you probably feel like me and have started to question your decision making. 4. Not really 4K. This is a big problem that the industry is doing a poor job with. Many movies were filmed and mastered with a DCI 2K intermediate. And I disagree about HDR being the selling point. This IS changing, even if it’s changing slowly. Ironically, some of the best looking 4K releases are re-releases of 35mm movies from yesterday year. 2001 sits on the top of my 4K Blu-ray collection. It is GORGEOUS. 5. DVD is... bad. Blu-ray was such a substantial improvement over DVD and UHD Is a more incremental improvement over Blu-ray. I just dumped my DVD collection because it’s impossible for me to watch anymore.

I could only say this. I spent a lot of money on my set up and I see a difference most of the time! I’ve been buying discs and VHS ever since I can remember. So I can say I have a lot of experience on this hobby. As far as cost yes it is expensive but this is also a hobby. Like most hobbies things cost money. $30 per disc can be costly. I personally don’t buy everything. I only buy what I want. I double or triple dip on certain movies cause I want the best quality or I really want that movie in that format. In the beginning I spent the money on discs. I also have gone through different TV’s LCD and OLED and have both now. I have probably owned 10 different 4K players since they came out. I have 2 now. I’m pretty much happy with my set up now. I now wait for sales, use Best Buy and amazon awards and buy when I get gift cards. So I don’t spend like I use to on discs. I also stream a lot. I do prefer the physical media tho. If you’re a casual movie watcher like the masses then that’s ok. This is a niche hobby. Not everyone is going to spend 5, 10, 20 thousand or even more on a home theater setup. Those who are the reason for this video are buying their 75 inch TVs or any size tv for under $1000 and maybe a sound bar most times don’t care much. Those who like the hobby who have a budget I respect that too, they do their research on what they can buy and get the best bang for their buck. Lastly I like your Chanel and your reviews and have actually gotten a few discs on your recommendation. Thanks.
