I think that it's not so much that diesel makes more torque (though it usually does on paper) but that the low rev torque is massively more useful for what you're doing with it. Power is only torque multiplied by revs after all and who wants a 4wd that has to be right up in the revs to do well?
Anyone who goes in deep mud. Diesel tends to dig and plow. Where high Rev keeps tires cleaned and more speed. Look into competing mud or hill climb trucks. Hell if your feeling really frisky look into Arab sand hill climbs. Now those are high hp
Sorry bro, I’m a boosted petrol head…diesels make MORE torque hands down every time. Liter for liter a diesel will create more torque than a petrol. These duramaxes are truck motors. There is nothing petrol powered with the same capacity that will match torque curves. There are no petrol trucks there is a reason for that.
done 30000km with a LSA and trans and had no problem other than an alternator. left it stock with 400HP. so far so good. hope you can find someone that can build Allison tran's over here reliably. i couldnt, ended up having to get one built in the US. but that was 10 years ago.
@@Dan-yc6vi yeah it can get very hot. I still run the standard 3L rad and 2x16 " fans. In my opinion nothing beats a mechanical fan! I have to watch all my temps and drive accordingly. Road is no issue , it's only Offroad.
Always remember Torque is in relation to Power! as of RPM. If you lower the RPM in which an engine produces power, Torque will climb and the other way around. So the reason why a 6BT produces so much torque is because it revs just to 2-3 k rpm. So in an low reving application, like for orr road or touring an engine with low down tq is nice. Here in Germany it can be completely different: When I drive to work I will go 100 mph, usually when partly free, or 150 mph when free. So max torque @3000 PRM is not so usefull, because my Z3 is @ 3500 RPM @ 120k/h (75mph).
Great choice. Your smart at avoiding the powerstroke because they are the least reliable of all the American diesels. That cummins that you drove I believe was the old 5.9. The newest 6.7 is smooth and quiet for a diesel. I love my 6.6 duramax.
only question is how can you say the duramax is so much more reliable for only having it put in recently compared to 3 years or so of experience with the LS, i guess the real test will happen over time.
A little bit of misinformation about the Cummins. Only the pre-2003 engines and the p-pump mechanical engines are loud and rattley, not all of them. The common rail engines released around the same time as the lbz and the later 6.7 engines are much quieter and smoother and are on par the the duramax and arguably are slightly cheaper to extract power put of. Love the build though mate the duramax suits your rig perfectly 👌
Not to mention the duramax is a very quiet running engine and not much vibration at idle for a diesel.. and they always start up great in cold weather!!
My brother had a td4.2 in his patrol, the swap to barra after it died meant no change in fuel consumption but 1 piece of driveline per 5000km ish and that's NA... Since the conversion it's now the most reliable part of the car. I think you'd be going too usual and ordinary to go a barra. Cheers for the video
Don't worry, 98 will be 2.60 in the next month or so. And gotta hope Russia and Ukraine thing doesn't escalate otherwise it will be $3 and over plus shortages.
The Patrol is a 4WD , not a race car. TD42’s do just fine and don’t over heat if you keep the afr’s in check and tuned properly with 15/20 psi boost. If you need more torque and power than that then sure do a conversion like this one or buy a RAM or Chevy 2500 diesel heavy duty. If you don’t mine getting somewhere a little bit slower then use a 4WD as it was built out of the factory. They were never designed to go fast.
Ya not wrong mate, I'm a truck mechanic here, if ya want Bigger power, buy a bigger donk.. little tunes are fine, but if you want big power, reliability is out the window
Not sure why you need so much power for a 4wd that was never designed for it.. hence broken diffs and gearboxes etc but each to their own.. Something like 150-200hp and near 600nm of torque at the wheels is plenty for a GU. The TD seems to get a bit of flack for being a kettle but it's about the same amount of repetitious nonsense as those people that say land cruisers are reliable lol. I've seen a lot of TD42's north of 800 thou km with unopened engines still going strong.. If you're sensible with mods and servicing it'll last a long time.. But if you're chasing reliable big power north of 250hp I agree with you that it ain't the engine to be using.
@@speyles 850 is really nothing to sneeze at torque wise. Thats way more torque than many common diesel 4x4s have. But 1500nm will be even better, of course.
@@moth3rfck3r-s4n 850nm at 5000rpm vs at 2000rpm is kinda the difference tho. no one gives a fuk if ur petty makes 10 billion torques if its all at redline haha
Still reackon its cheaper to go with an old 7.3l powerstroke f250. They are a few in aussie. Seem to me to be easier and cheaper to just iron out the problems of an old 250 than a big engine swap
Not quite sure why you're hating the barra I totally agree that duramax is better. but when you did the comparison against the LS v the barra a few months to go, the barra seemed to win all the important stuff.
I was a bit confused when I saw Sam driving a wagon in the first chasing lines series. Though I haven't watched the LS swap series. But I'm thinking the wagon got chopped. Edit: Sam has been having the experiences of somone who's done a crazy engine swap. But it was good fun while it lasted.
There are a few ridiculous assertions in all this - one is that an LS motor is not suitable for a truck because it was used in a Commodore - that's just plain wrong. Another BIG one is that an LS conversion to a Patrol costs the same as a Duramax conversion - hahahahahahaha, NO. Another one - Diesels are simpler than an LS - err, nothing is simpler than a pushrod LS.
Sam I think you should have explained the power and torque thing a bit better for those that don't understand. Half your viewers probably think power is measured on the dyno which is obviously not the case. The difference between the two engines is not the power, just the torque. That difference comes from the chemical differences between the fuel and the induction. Then if you explain how power is calculated it becomes obvious why you would choose a disel for this application. For those that don't know, power(kW) = torque(Nm) x RPM/9.5488. So the faster you spin an engine (petrol) the more power it makes because of higher RPM. A better comparison between the two engines would be to compare their torque curves and where in the rev range they make peak torque.
You didn't like the Cummins but the one you showed was a 6bt, I had a 6.7 (same as current ram3500) in an 84 f250 and it was a great conversion, way better than the 6bt... go for a spin in one to compare.

Not just the Barra you forgot 6.5 chev the old Brunswick conversion 😉😂😂 all tho glad you did the duramax conversion getting too be more common conversion but still not a heap out there
blown LS not enough power for a heavy rig. What about.... every single SUV with an LS in it over in the USA. stock american cars are heavier than a little nissan ute :P
I paused to see the "way too hot intake temps", 28 degrees, am I missing something? I can reach those intake temps on a stock 4 cylinder engine when idling around on a parking lot.
Your also forgetting maintenance and parts availability - to make a diesel last it needs to be serviced every 5000km so there goes your fuel savings. Parts a standard Ish LS alternator etc will be available at pretty much every super cheap good luck with that for a duramax around aus. As for driveline braking that’s partly the joys of a heavy rig with a manual with power. If you stuck with a 6l90e you would of more than halved the driveline headaches.
Would it be possible to explain what is actually involved to one do the swap and secondly, what is involved engineering wise to get this road registered in the various States around Australia.
What about a Landcruiser 200 4.5 twin turbo V8. Comfortable, reliable, parts everywhere, pretty sure power on tap. Actually maybe price might be a problem. did you consider this?
@@danielcantrill3104 really? an incredibly reliable, proven off and on road as a tourer and being able to take 4 tonnes of set up cruiser to anywhere possible. sure it's not a rip around but as a tourer i dont think yo can go worng.
@@alexhill_79 incredibly reliable is a question mark. There are lots of know problems with the 4.5. I actually like the 1vd engine I think it has lots of potential. But it isn’t the same as a 6.6 motor for touring or towing in particular. Go for a drive in a duramax patrol with the Alison trans. It is smooth and effortless.
