I have explained it a few times, but apparently it is time for the chalkboard of death to talk about why I switched to .40 S&W.

The .40 detractors are a mystery to me. You easily shot down all the common myths. What I don't get, though, is what motivates them to hate .40 enough to try so hard to sell their case in the first place. It's weird.
@doitriteak
@doitriteak 3 года назад
They don't want to look like a bitch because they can't handle the 40. It exposes their piss poor performance. There is not enough difference in recoil to make a difference in performance, but it is the same as the trigger problem. A real OEM trigger exposes a lack of practice and skill. Gotta fuel that ego, even if it mean vilifilying and demeaning something. Oh and the cost of ammo isn't too important because the same people batching about price are now gladly paying more for 9mm than what you'd pay for 357sig. Cut the shit with the affordability, especially when you don't use that benefit to actually practice. That extra money just goes to gear and gadgets that do nothing to improve your capability. Other than that I have no opinion.

Carried one since 1990. Have seen in action and they do the job very well. My Chief absolutely refused to go to 9m/m for over penetration and little damage. The 40s&w is still used in our area. The 40 is not dead but has a cold. It is like the 45acp. Hard to beat and can still cut the mustard.

My buddy had a Shorty 40 back in 1994 and yeah it jumped a bit but I liked the pop and hit well with it. I wish there was more selection in smaller pistols like the Shield the grip is a bit thin for me but tempting. I don't know if Kabooms are still a thing in the smaller guns or not. Some say if you go 165 grain or 155 grain there is less chance of that happening. Thoughts?

You're going to get a lot of hate from people who are emotionally invested in 9x19mm. The recent stampede to 9mm does make sense with so many new people getting into handguns. Starting out with 9mm makes perfect sense to me. However, once you attain proficiency, moving into .40 S&W just makes sense too. I can even understand law enforcement agencies switching back to 9mm to save money and make training a little easier. I just wish everyone would stop kidding themselves with this "9mm is just as good as .40" nonsense. Just admit you're sacrificing performance to save money and make it easier for your female officers to run and gun. That's fine, but call a spade a spade.

The people that complain about the recoil of the .40 being so much worse then the 9mm should probly purchase some MAXIMUM STREGTH VAGASIL before they fire ANY weapon . I own guns chambered in both 9mm and .40 s&w. The difference in recoil is slight. People tend to hear an opinion and just go along with it , with no actual hands on experience. In a word , ignorance. I will take my .40s&w over my 9mm in a real life self defense situation all day everday. Larger bullet moving at the same speed = more stopping power. No brainer IMHO

The .40 is what the 10mm was originally intended to be. Jeff Cooper had extensively reviewed gun literature from throughout the 1900s when he got together with Whit Collins to come up with a 9-beater and .45-beater. His vision was for a 200gr projectile moving 1000fps. It wasn't until he got together with Dornaus & Dixon and then Norma that his .40 idea Hulked out into 10. Regardless, when the FBI looked into 10mm, they actually downloaded it back to its originally intended performance, and they loved it. When it was revealed that they could get that same performance in a shorter case, they jumped at the chance and .40S&W became the norm for them and the rest of law enforcement. So they never really embraced 10mm, at all.

I changed to 40sw because it’s a stronger and harder hitting round and you get more bang for the buck. To have a heavier bullet traveling at 9mm speed is a advantage all around. Here in 2022 most 40sw pistols are designed for the caliber out the gate like most smith and Wesson pistols and the Glock gen5.

When I was a kid my dad had a 10mm delta elite, a .45 cold cup, a .357 mag (6"brl), and his pet .44 mag with only 5 1/2" brl, and loved handloading hot loads. So when people call .40 snappy I kinda laugh, everything I shot was either a little more recoil or MUCH more. The .45 and 10mm were fun to shoot to me because of the light recoil! It also helps that I lift weights and do heavy manual labor, so big forearms=strong grip. (which are attached to large heavy arms and shoulders) I can't understand why a man wouldn't want to have some strength, so the snappiness shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

I'm glad I started shooting with heavy calibers (.45 ACP was my first handgun round, then .357 Magnum, then .44 Magnum, finally, the .40), because when you start heavy, the recoil doesn't bother you much. You just learn how to deal with it. People starting with light calibers learn bad habits that they can get away with (One of the big reasons I always hear for choosing the 9mm is that it's easier to get repeat hits with), and can't get away with once you move up much past 9mm.

Another reason to switch to .40S&W (for self-defense purposes anyway): when the round connects with a human target you can visibly see some type of reaction...not so much with the 9mm. The .40 (and .45) will cause your adversary to flinch and/or their clothing to move. You visibly know you’re making hits. I just don’t see that with 9mm even in the +P loads. This is often overlooked or dismissed.

I’d say to the people that say 40 S&W beats up guns and is hard to shoot, first, maintenance, then buy a gun specifically engineered for the 40. Like the M&P 40 or similar. The forty gets a bad rap because some guns on the market are just 9 mm platforms with the 40 shoehorned into it. Perhaps those guns do wear faster. But I would bet good maintenance mitigates a lot of that concern.

Training is everything regardless of caliber. .40 works great and recoil can be managed well by a female shooter. AND….if you purchase a gun specifically designed for .40, it will not break down any faster than a 9mm. I’ve used a S&W M&P 40 since 2011 and have shot 5K rounds through it without any malfunctions or need to replace any parts.

@doitriteak, Interesting video. I too chose the 40s&w but I did so more than two decades ago. My research parallels your findings; load for load, the 40 does more damage than the 9mm. You did say one thing that was inaccurate regarding pressure though. The 40 and the 9mm actually do have the same standard maximum average pressure rating. What causes the greater wear on the 40 is the increase in momentum generated by the heavier bullet propelled to similar velocities, not increased pressure. If a gun is not specifically built for the 40 s&w, it simply won’t have the same durability as a 9mm. Great video and presentation.

They both did fine through 4 layers, but when I tried 8, the 9mm still expanded fully (!) and the .40 didn't (and my notes don't have the expanded diameter, just that it failed). The 9's hollowpoint cavity was deep and long, while the .40's was essentially a dimple by comparison, so there was nowhere for the thick denim to go. That 9mm just wanted to expand no matter what. It is true that it would sometimes lose its jacket, but it was always after 12 inches of penetration (equivalent), which mirrors the results I see here on YT. Gelatin is really an ideal medium for bullets, and I look for something that actually overperforms a bit, since rounds tend to underperform in real life compared to gelatin. Even if the .40 expanded as readily as the 9, there's still nearly no difference in pen/exp to offset the additional recoil. It's not that recoil is hard to handle or scary by any means, but it does mean that in the same size/weight gun, muzzle flip will be greater, and that means longer shot split times (time between shots). I know a firearms instructor who was absolutely enamored with his G23, and he was very good at using it, but even he managed to hit 7 times with a G19 in the time he hit 4 with a 23. Four of the 165 Golden Sabers here does about the same damage as four of the 124 Golden Sabers... but then you get three more of the 124s. That is the rationale that makes the most sense in the move back to 9mm. It's not just that the 9mm is less scary to new shooters (solution: stop being a new shooter... which happens automatically with practice, which you need anyway to hit the broad side of a barn), but that the recoil from 9 to 40 is more of an increase than the damage done. How much one shot does is only an issue if you only have one shot... but you have 15+1 with a 22 and 17+1 for a 9mm, so you are by no means limited to one round. Shoot until the threat to your life is over, not just one and done. You'll do more damage per unit of time with 9mm than with .40 or .45 in a gun of the same size and weight. I actually like the .40 and have one gun chambered in that caliber, and I am contemplating getting more, but 9mm is still my go-to. For plinking, the more recoil, the merrier. My g20 is too big to really carry concealed, but shooting it is fun.

.40 is perfect for my needs & I have all the stuff for many thousands of reloads. It’s always gonna be my preference for glocks & subs. Everyone is different, I’m a bigger guy so the recoil isn’t noticeable, but if you have a smaller build wife or little ones you are training, the 9mm is also fine. I always keep a 9mm around for the little guys or the timid first timers.

The .40 has always been my all around favorite. I like other cartridge too but to me the .40 is the best of them all, you get 9mm size with bigger power. It can be reloaded cheaply, often .40 brass is cheaper than 9mm once fired and can be loaded from very, very mild to very hot and you can shoot competition with it and take the same gun out in the woods and take deer and hogs with it. Can't go wrong with the .40, I like the 9mm ways and I see why it's so popular (price and gun options) but the .40 has a lot more potential still left in it, the 9mm doesn't.

I've had plenty of folks tell me I needed to switch to 9mm. They don't read much. I don't have real issues with recoil. Bullet design has improved in 9mm. It has also improved in 40. 40 launches a heavier bullet to the same speeds as a 9mm. They expand more and get just as much penetration. That creates a larger wound cavity. I carry an H&K P2000. It has a 12 round capacity. The 9mm version gains only one round. The HK45C has an 8 round magazine. Going to the P2000, I got nearly the same wound cavity with a higher capacity. Everyone keeps saying that shot placement is where it's at, thinking I don't know that. Shot placement IS important. I use a larger bullet because I know I'm not perfect. I practice but that bigger bullet gives me a better chance of hitting something critical.

Here comes the second part, if you load a 145 gn 9mm bullet to around its max safe velocity with a fast to medium speed powder you will find it rather snappy with a very perceptible recoil if you load a 145 gn 40 bullet with medium to slow powder say N340, N350 or 3N37 to get the same minor power factor as the 9mm they shoot so soft you can go way faster than the 9 with very quick recovery. This is my experience loading 9mm and 40 S&W for national and international competition since 1994, for Open, Modified, Production, Production Optic, Standard and PCC Divisions for primarily Tanfoglio, CZ, S&W, STI and SVI pistols.

Very interesting and nice explanation. For me driving force was much more simplistic - 9mm gone from stores and price went up, 0.40S&W was wildly available and relatively cheap. And yes first thing I have noticed that - recoil of 40 is urban legend, second thing is more accuracy that you can get out of same frame (like comparing HK VP9 and HK VP40 or Glock 17 and Glock 23 etc.) - much tighter groups. Of course there is a huge difference between different manufactures within same caliber but 40 tend to be more forgiven here as well

I own 22 mag, 38 spl, 9 mm, 40 s&w, and 357 mag. I don't practice as much as I should or want, but I have learned a thing or two. The 40 s&w and the 357 mag can be snappy with a short barrel, but a longer barrel easily remedies the issue (example: short barrel P2000 vs longer barrel VP 40, and 686 4 inch barrel vs 686 6 inch barrel). Either way the answer to overcoming an issue is practice. Either through proper grip, or the idea of letting the gun naturally recoil. Of course try both and look for the sweet spot. All of these calibers are different, not one is perfect, but I'm sure I can find a useful purpose for each of them. Among other things in life there is nothing like shooting soda cans on a nice day. My first gun was an XD 9102 (.40S&W) and I got it almost by accident. My cousin and I were on our way to a gun range, my first time going to one and I was about to buy a new gun. The store we stopped at had no 9mm in the XD, not even at any of their stores in other cities farther away. I got the .40 and later got a Shield in .40 which I stippled and ported to mitigate the recoil, which my XD barely had. I did research on the .40 because it was already unpopular 6-7 years ago, but I stuck with it and even stocked up on .40 ammo a few years later. Some claimed that the .40 has 13-15% more energy than the 9mm, and it has greater sectional density and thus creates a greater wound channel. I tested several Glocks in various calibers at a shot show but my XD felt a lot more comfortable, even more than a 9mm Glock. After encountering an attempted home invasion by 4 ghetto ex-cons (where I had to also defend my handicapped mother), I felt that I had an advantage in having a .40 caliber pistol over a 9mm one because of the size and potential strength of the criminals I faced that that day. The XD is my home defense tool because of its weight and size. My Shield will soon become my EDC. It has a Crimson Trace laser/light which is extremely intuitive and instantly turns on the moment I grip the pistol.

Tons of videos of cops mag dumping 9mm into bad guys and they keep coming... Tulsa still carries .40 cal and rarely shoot over one round, unless they miss. 1 video shows the cop shooting a bad guy and I swear he hit him in the upper leg and killed him, they were completely surprised, Millions of dollars has been spent on the 9mm round, trying to make it something it just never will be, when the 40 cal came out it was built and designed to do exactly what it's supposed to do because of the complaints of the 9mm round and when the FBI went to it, almost every Cop in America started to carry it....like sheep. I just bought a Sig P226 TacOps in .40 at a gun store for $800 and a hundred round of Black Talon 40 cal.... that's crazy

What was the cost per round for those black talons? Saw some on ammoseek during the height of the pandemic & they were going for $10 per round.

I have a new S&W M&P 40 M2.0 full size with the 4.25" barrel. It's heavier with a fully loaded mag. Love it though. When I first shot it last summer, I also anticipated recoil and jerked it high left for a bit. Then leaned into it and that group was more precise and more accurate. That science is correct coming off of a 9mm. I find the 165 grain is good, and had more drops on the 180 grain at 25 yards. At first. I've compensated. Any thoughts on barrel length between 165 and 180? My defense is Remington HPJ's at 155 grain. I've been using Winchester and PMC for most of my range use.
