Why I Took My First Cold Plunge (and What Happened)

In this video, I'm sharing my story about taking my first cold plunge. I explain why I decided to take the plunge and what happened along the way. I watch ‪@hubermanlab‬ all the time and he constantly promotes this crazy stuff for multiple health benefits. I swore I would never try it but, if Huberman believes in it I thought it might be worth a try. I even ordered my own ‪@icebarrel‬ 300 that is on it's way to me right now.
If you're considering taking a cold plunge for your first time, I hope my story will encourage you to go ahead and do it! I was a little nervous before my plunge, but I can tell you that it was worth it! And I know that once you try it, you'll never go back to living a normal life without a cold therapy!

I had to be pulled out of the cold bath after a sauna once - just cold, no ice - because I was unconscious on impact. So no, I won't be doing this! However, if you can take the cold and it helps? Do it, because I can imagine what it can potentially do. My godmother wanted to do the ice plunge in Lake Huron with her Tae Kwon Do group. She was 68 or so when she did this for the first time. They required her to have ice plunges in her bath at home for a year before they allowed her and she did. She went into Lake Huron 4 times, the last time when she was 74 and got her black belt. She stayed in for 15 minutes and was pulled out kicking and screaming because she loved it so much! We are all different and that is a very good thing!

Check out the ice man, Whim Hoff. He teaches how to do it properly and how to breathe, so you're OK through it. I would also think that you would need to ever so gradually build up your tolerance by slowly cooling the temp of the water so you don't go into shock. The breathing exercises he does and teaches also help prevent shock and allow you to focus and calm.

I couldn't do it either not spur of the moment. I have heard of icebaths for temperature lowering before. Don't know how they do it without someone passing out though. That is pure shock to the system 😳 I have done very quick cooler showers like at the end of a warm or hot shower before but very quickly not to long and have done quick cold blast for my hair before but not too long very quick. It is still not that pleasant 😕

I’ve heard so many good things about cold therapy. Being an ICU nurse, we have been chilling patients down to 33 degrees Celsius for 24 hours (TTM) after cardiac arrest to improve neurological function afterwards. I’ve seen it work!

@ErinCRN
@ErinCRN 9 месяцев назад
@@dominiqueveron8098 it does! To even lower them to that point we have to paralyze them because they shiver. Look up TTM (targeted temperature management) after cardiac arrest. Assuming that the person has ROSC and they are not waking up after ROSC.

@@dominiqueveron8098 Normal body temperature is 98.6 F. So that would be 7 degrees lower actually and if you were 7 degrees higher you'd be at 105 F and off to the ER so I'd imagine it makes a world of difference!
@arwenwestrop5404
@arwenwestrop5404 9 месяцев назад
@@dominiqueveron8098 my temperature went went down to 35.6°C once and I was really ill for a few weeks. It took 3 weeks before my temperature was back up to normal. However, it is well known that people who were seriously injured in extremely cold temperatures survived because of that. Like animals hibernating through really cold winters, when their heart rate and temperature goes right down. It does look like we are made to be able to withstand such conditions. However, I would be te last person to volunteer to test that! 😉

Among the many physiological benefits, the most valuable in my mind is the mental health benefits. Doing something you don't want to do, embracing raw elements of nature, choosing the hard path over the smooth road, self discipline. In a world full of countless dopamine responses and instant gratification. The benefits of training ones mind over the temporary discomfort of the body are extremely valuable in my opinion.

Way to go Neisha!! I was in a car accident almost 3 years ago where the car went into a frozen lake. The car ended up half way in the water. Every time I hear about cold plunges I think of that accident. I was stuck in the water for 30ish minutes. 🥶I don't think I'll ever do a cold plunge voluntarily because of that.

I’m happy you’re doing this on your channel. It’s great you felt pain relief. My wish is everyone hears about the benefits of cold exposure. You are right it doesn’t have to be expensive I’ve been doing cold plunge daily in a makeshift plastic soaker tub in my spare shower, $50 on Amazon, for over a year. When I started I was in agonizing 24/7 chronic peripheral neuropathy pain for 20 years. Nothing helped. It’s been a miracle now my pain 99.9% gone. There’s No turning back for me now.

I make sure I don’t bundle up either when I walk. I’ve read that getting used to the cold boosts immunity and I swear it helped me in 2020 (during the year we don’t talk about) I’m planning on stepping up and increasing my cold therapy. You’re so brave Neisha. You actually did it!! Congratulations!

One of the best feelings is to jump in a cold water as long as you can stand it and then get out into even colder air and stand in the cold air until you are freezing -even more than you were in the water....And then jump back in the water. The second time in that cold water actually feels pleasantly warm :)

I go from hot directly to cold and can confirm all the benefits you stated and can only imagine how much better a plunge could be. Good job Niesha! My cold plunge is go outside when it is 30-40 degrees and wear a tank top or 100% cotton tshirt and shorts and work in the yard for about 20-30 minutes. Last winter was my first year on carnivore, and one day I went out in a 100% cotton Tshirt and shorts to rake leaves. I had not checked the temps but after about 5 minutes I noticed my breath and thought, “wait, how cold is it out here?” I looked and weather app said 33 degrees. I thought that was so cool!! Before carnivore I was always cold natured and had to wear almost snow coats and pants in 30 degree weather. Now I can go outside and wear light clothing with carnivore. Our bodies can adjust to cooler temps and hotter temps when on carnivore, ketovore, and low carb keto. I think carnivore provides the most body temp regulation. I was out there for 20 minutes and no real issues.

Excellent job there Neisha 👍 ... Tip: Try to remember (once the initial reflex, autonomic shock-breathing has settled down) ... Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth because if we breathe in through the mouth, we don't get to inhale much of that glorious Nitrous Oxide (primarily responsible for vasal dilation & consequential blood pressure and flow regulation) that our oral bacteria (Neisseria, Haemophilus, Granulicatella, Veillonella, Prevotella, Corynebacterium, Actinomyces, and Rothia) produce in the posterior of the dorsum of the tongue, especially under anaerobic conditions (which may be part of the reason as to how Wim Hof's " breathe deep then exhale & hold " (anaerobic) breathing technique boosts the immune system by boosting Nitric Oxide levels) 😉

I had knee replacement surgery in June. I have been ice packing that knee daily to keep the inflammation down and decrease pain. Back to work and I am miserable. Athletes have cold baths after games to do the same thing. I don't think it is a bad thing at all. I just don't know if I could do a whole body plunge or stay in as long as you did. I am considering it though. Great going.

As far as it being a "Fad"....Icelanders have been doing this for at least a 1,000 years. Vikings were doing it as well. Worth a try for many ailments. Just gotta physic yourself out every time.

Very cool Neisha. I can't believe Dr B chickened out. What the heck? You have bigger balls. Disappointed. LOL. We live in Arizona. The pool in the backyard has been calling me to try cold plunge. The water gets down to 50 in the winter. I would love to eventually buy a wet suit and swim laps all winter. I have to get the nerve to just get in first, but that's my goal.

Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm happy to hear that you got so much pain relief. That's amazing! Once you get your own cold plunge, please film yourself again so we can see if with practice you are able to get your shoulders all the way under the water. Yikes! 🥶❄️

Buy a used chest freezer. Mine is 320 litres.Replace the thermostat with an adjustable one. My complete setup cost less than $250. Have mine set at 33F/ 1 C. Get in every day for 10 minutes.

Suppose to put your whole head in and relax. Just like ice scuba diving with a thinner wet suit. Korean massage parlors and the hot springs in Ecuador have super cold, medium, and super hot pools.

Great job Neisha! Even though it was one body part...a few years back I had tendonitis from hoeing, my massage therapist treated it by giving my elbow and arm an ice massage, totally went away after 3 sessions so I can't wait to hear more on your healing.

Dr Elizabeth Bright says its nit good for adrenals/ hormones. I've done wild swimming/ plunged in fairy pool in the glen where I live in Scotland, it definitely gives you a high afterwards as long as core temperature can be regained quickly afterwards ❤

Talking about your natural childbirth.... I had my second child entirely natural - against my wants - and she was 5 weeks early and she was frank breech - fanny first. That was horrible but the good thing about it was since she was 5 weeks early, she was only 5 pounds. Now, I like you, think I can endure any pain. Oh by the way I am 76. Don't know if I could or would do that ice plunge. I don't think I can even do a cold shower. Keep telling us about the benefits you are receiving from it.

This brought ua memory from 1977. I moved to Marquette Michigan for college. I also met my future and current husband. There is a large Finnish culture there and they had saunas in their homes. Marquette is on the coast of Lake Superior, the coldest of the Great Lakes. Their Finnish custom is to go into the sauna for awhile, and then jump into the lake! And freeze your #$%'s off! So, we had to try it. It was cold! But we were in our 20's back then. Gary still likes going into our pool in the winter (Not me, but I will probably start). We live in Arizona now. It has always helped reduce his chronic pain. Fun memories though!

I sleep with ice on my body in the hot Georgia summer better than sleeping pills with no side effects. I also sleep with ice all night on a part of my body that feels pain in the morning I awaken pain free. I will also recline for a nap with ice on my body and wake up calm and refreshed. My thought is the ice reduces inflammation which reduces pain physical and mental pain.

Around my area they do polar plunges every year in the winter. For the last 26 years I have heard about them. I can’t imagine doing them on purpose lol that’s just me because in the winter up here in the North -30 degrees getting sloshed with water hauling for livestock…yep it gives me a rush to hurry up & get chores done so I can get warm lol
