Why I used 3/4 ton Axles instead of one tons(and you probably can too)

The flu got me this week so I figured a video about a question I get constantly was about all I had time for. 3/4 ton axles can be had relatively cheap and be made rather tough, but do your own research guys, and feel free to ask me your axle swap questions! Yes 1 tons are better but they arent always available or affordable as a 3/4 ton

I didn't hear it mentioned but a Dana 44 has a lot more clearance under it than a Dana 60 on equal size tires. A light rig without gobs of power would be fine. At least go with 1/2" thick tube version though.

Thanks for sharing man. Good info. Too many folks think they need "the best" when they dont even take any time to evaluate what the best FOR THEM might be. Everyone's doing 60/14 bolt or 60/sterling. No ones asking whether they need that? Sure, if you can afford it, why not, or if you get a deal, why not? but that doesnt make you better than the dude who only has 44's and out wheels you 7 days a week.

I love seeing a build with 3/4 ton axles!! Not everyone can afford to go up to tons, and not everyone needs them for the limited trail riding they do, or light trail rides without a lot of hard core rock crawling. Also, trusses out leaf spring! Dope!
@FlawedOffroad
@FlawedOffroad 2 года назад
Exactly. I do get into some hard stuff but I live in the Midwest we don’t exactly have some thing like Moab next-door. I did a whole video on how I made that truss work too it was a trip!

@bigzoffroad 2 года назад
@@FlawedOffroad yes, you’re axle truss video was actually the first one i saw on your channel. And yeah, there’s plenty that a built up D44 can handle. Aint gonna be bouncing off rocks at the EFI shootout, but that’s a whole different game
@FlawedOffroad
@FlawedOffroad 2 года назад
@@bigzoffroad my biggest issue right now is my tires suck they’re hard as a rock and don’t have any grip but if you checked out any of my Offroad videos like a smorr you can see how bad it doesn’t wanna grab in the rocks so I did quite a bit of over bumping to get up stuff. I’m also thinking the front limited slip versus a locker is going to end badly when I upgrade😅

Just subscribe - and just bought a 94 YJ project - stock currently which is great. Working on basic drive ability stuff now. But a video on axle swaps - what works what doesn't 3/4 ton or 1 ton would be great.
@StormbornJKU
@StormbornJKU 2 года назад
I’d say the biggest reason not to go with a specific axle setup is due to aftermarket support. Gears, lockers, shafts, and all the rest. If that stuff isn’t available for the setup your looking at then it’s likely not a good choice. But if the cost is right, the axles will fit your rig, and your willing to do the work on them and make them work for you then it’s all worth whatever your willing to pay and do.
@FlawedOffroad
@FlawedOffroad 2 года назад
That’s another good point. And that ties into what I was saying about doing a deeper dive on the topic is what’s worth doing and what’s not. well anything that doesn’t have aftermarket support isn’t worth doing. Low pinion front axles aren’t worth doing either in my opinion
@theezeelife292
@theezeelife292 2 года назад
Heck yeah!!! If I were to find a deal like that, I'd throw 3/4 ton axles under my rig. Personally, I know where I can get 2005+ F250 axles, front and rear, for $2,500 for the set. Yeah, i gotta drive 2 hours to get them, but always remember the 3rd rule of acquisition; Never spend more for an acquisition than you have to.

As a card carrying member of build it as your budget allows, I salute you. I wheel with what I can afford. I go out with these groups of people in their JK's and JL's with every bolt on expensive part their credit card will allow and we all always end up in the same place at the end of the trail. If mine breaks, I know how to fix it. WHEN theirs break, they are always looking around for someone to fix it. No tools, no knowledge. I always pitch in and get them back going because that is what wheelers do. It's all about going out and having fun.

A high pinion 44 with good shafts is a beast. In a light rig it's prob going to serve you as well as a 60 stock. I found a 05 super duty axles for $500 for the pair but they need to be completely gone through. I'm gonna change all of it but the housings, knuckles, and shafts(35spl inner and outer fronts yay).Ouch for my wallet.

Welcome to the 3/4 ton club.... I have a 1887 TJ with a TeraLow CRD60 rear & Ford HP44 front that I've been running 35" & then 38" tires on and the only thing I've broken so far is a u-joint and axle shaft. I have a Dodge magnum V-8 in mine so a little more power but it's nice to have these smaller/lighter axles. American Iron Off Road should have ball joint deletes here in the next few months also for our D44 axles. So those combined with RCV shafts should be good for up to 40" tires.

What’s the difference between a 3/4 ton axle and a 1 ton axle? My C20 and C30 both had Dana 60’s. My later trucks had 14 bolts…
@FlawedOffroad
@FlawedOffroad 2 месяца назад
depends on the truck. on the old fords the 3/4t had a HD 8 lug dana 44, (1/2 tons had 5 lug 44) the sno fighter and f350 had a d60 front. honestly in that truck the rear 60 is the same but some are 30 spline and some are 35. I bored my spindles out to accept 35 spline. on the chevy I thought 1/2ton was 10 bolt, 3/4t was d44 and 1t was d60(speaking of front axles) but im no expert on chevy axles cause they are passenger drop aka not desirable to me.
