Today I talk about why I probably would never live in South Korea again.
I'm not bashing the country and I hope no one gets offended, but these are my personal reasons why I would never move to korea long term again. I still would love to visit and maybe even explore new cities like jeju and jeonju!
The next 2 videos I will sit down and talk about the things I disliked about korea and the things I loved. So look forward to those!
Also thumbs up and let me know if you're going to be learning korean with me! I will start teaching you lessons beginning in June and I'll have work for you that compliments my lessons as well, to maximize your learning!
Since we're all stuck at home, it the perfect time to improve on skills we always wanted to learn! LET"S DO THIS TOGETHER

I’ve always wanted to go to South Korea and live there long term right after I finish college. (Like for the rest of my life) But this video has really opened my eyes about some things. You were correct about everything you said, especially the societal standards. I feel like I always knew it, but ignored it but I was so infatuated with the country, blinded by the food, kdramas, fashion, kpop, kbeauty etc. I still love the culture, and history and language, but I don’t know if I’ll live there for the rest of my life now. I’ve always wondered why a lot of foreigner you-tubers never stayed in Korea for long (not including Megan Bowen etc) No country is perfect. I appreciate your honesty in this video. Sorry if this is a long rant lol

This is why you shouldnt base a country on what it portrays in the media. Of course things like kpop/kdrama and the rest of pop culture isn't going to highlight the ugly side of Korea. I love living here, but it you base a move on what you see in pop culture, you're gonna be shocked when you arrive.

I'm really glad you were honest with yourself. Especially about starting to conform to the beauty standards. Korea lacks uniqueness, and that's kind of a con for a person that's from the States because here there are so many different faces and shades of beautiful, whereas in Korea there is one standard and anyone that doesn't meet it will most likely be given a hard time. But anyways, I hope you are happy and things work out for you in the future! 💕
@lrj7128
@lrj7128 4 года назад
Rachael Johnson I think the reason why Korea lacks uniqueness is because all the beauty products have similar colors & tones. It was first made like that because Koreans naturally have similar skin with others cuz country is like so tiny lol so there’s no environmental factors that vary features. and this slowly became ‘standards’. I hope it somehow changes gradually as Korean beauty products are now aiming global markets.
@oceana311
@oceana311 4 года назад
@@lrj7128 the thing that I have never understood about that is the fact that I have seen many koreans who are naturally on the tanner side. To me when people ask for expansion of shade ranges it's not even just about trying to conform to foreigners I feel like it isnt fair to the koreans who dont fit that beauty standard of having very pale skin.
@michichiipro
@michichiipro 4 года назад
I agree with both of you! Foreigners kinda have this high expectations from Koreans just because they take interest in the country and forget Korea is its own place who should have the choice to slowly find themselves and not be rushed into it because there’s a recent BOOM you know? I feel like a lot of people aren’t giving Korea time to develop on their own and kind of forcing it because they are noticing it. I know a ton of people who legit only knew China and Japan existed and now Korea is the center of attention and its probably a lot for them on many levels
@michichiipro
@michichiipro 4 года назад
I think sometimes doing some research helps. Of course western beauty have inspired the obsession with certain attributes in korean beauty but pale skin for example was a thing in Korea, China and Japan way before Europeans visits to these countries. There were already ancient practices for health reasons, status and traditions. Like in Japan a Geisha paints her face white because in old times they only had candlelight therefore you couldn’t see their faces. ( naturally they had pretty dark skin ) so they used white paint to be seen in the candlelight. For other reasons, if you were dark you were apart of the field or rice workers meaning you were poor. For other reasons it was related to purity so basically it’s apart of their history and I’ve always understood that though I do believe they should be more expressive with everything but hopefully incoming years exposure to more people will do just that which would benefit both parties.

oceana311 it’s not even many, i would even go as far to say that majority of koreans are a little lighter than olive. same with china and japan. koreans always call themselves pale but there are VERY few that would be as pale as an average white person lol. they need to wake up

Sounds like everyone who likes Kpop is under the age of 16. Logially that makes no sense. Kpop idols are adult men with their own lives and many have girlfriends on the low. Fan girls are probably one of the scariest fans to have. The obsession some of these boy bands face from fan girls is out of this world. They are not even thinking realistically and no where ever had a kpop idol or celebrity got with a nobody who fans over them.

a 29 year old Korean was also involved and one of the first people who began the second spread of the virus... and yet only the foreigners are really being targeted. There was a photo circulating recently about a sign outside of a freaking cafe in Korea which said “no foreigners allowed”. Chinese citizens were denied entrance into any clubs/bars back in February when COVID-19 was starting. Koreans will complain about the treatments/racism of Asians abroad, yet they have no problem showing the world just how xenophobic they are in times like this. - On the other hand, Japan has refused to reveal the nationality of those infected, saying they should just be treated fairly as a patient, even helping them get masks.
@Oceanlinx

@@DorkiiPanda18 sadly that isn't the first time something like this happens, there was some clubs in gangnam district back in 2018 that specifically put "no blacks allowed" or " no Chinese allowed" signs on their entrance because, according to them, they are "violent". @Cooltonic Im sorry that Asian people are being discriminated against in the US, no one deserves to endure racial prejudice at all. However, I also think it is important to not measure/compare peoples discrimination, and accept that racism is intolerable as a whole. Instead of having pity competitions we should rather draw the connections by being both victims of discrimination from either party. I dont particularly know if it is because I am a black female who grew up in London where diversity is SOOO common here but I have never even considered discriminating against asians especially since 70% of my friendship group is Indian, Sri-lanken, Korean and Japanese. What I am attempting to hint at is that each and every persons experience/POV is subjective to them, not all black people hold these racial biases towards asian people and yet I am supposed to be grateful that Koreans 'accepted my ass' when really I am most likely to face the same reception as the O.G commentor if I travel to Korea? is that fair or just?- I'm not whining but instead giving you the reality. In terms of respect- I have grown up in a stable, strict christian household, have achieved good grades and have always been loving/respectful because my parents raised me that way. Yet entering into university/ the workplace I am still susceptible to discrimination and racial slurs because of the colour of my skin- Such an issue of discrimination and systemic racism is a lot harder to conquer than in the simple way of 'showing love', my christian values side with you however the reality is not as squeaky clean as you made it out to be. On a more positive note, with the big boom of the K industry atm I can only assume you that more people are adhering to the Korean culture and instead of discriminating are instead praising it. Its a step in the right direction and I hope P.O.C may be able to also experience such a break through. Best of luck x :)

Interesting, the air felt fine to me (I’m from Vancouver, Canada, one of the cleanest AQI in the world). I would say air quality differs in each region. I lived on Jeju Island where the air quality in the summer was slightly worse than mainland, however it was bearable for me. Winter was fine. To add, SK’s population is huge and it’s a bit hard to imagine that everyone’s walking around with smokers lungs... in fact South Korea has a higher life expectancy than US the last time I checked! But my point is not to invalidate your experience or what you’ve heard from other people, but I hope air quality does not deter people from pursuing what they want in SK because to be honest I had a BLAST despite cultural and weather differences. But I totally agree with your point about conformity in SK.. people take it to the NEXT level. I once took the train wearing PJ’s to grab something one stop over and people were literally staring me up and down 😭 It’s definitely a deeply rooted mindset in their culture and it’s a sharp contrast to some places in Europe where people value their OWN sense of style. IMO yeah if you dress differently or have piercings you will get people who look at you. Just like how here in Canada, if we see someone in a Japanese style outfit or something uncommon we can’t help but look because... well... it’s different. Do Koreans have bad intentions when they look at you? Idk 🤷‍♀️ I believe they are just usually genuinely curious. They’ll forget by the end of the day LOL For people who are having second thoughts about going.. look at it this way. Everyone will absolutely have a different experience. Of course there is a culture shock waiting to happen when you go to brand new country, but your experience is also what you make of it! I know it can be so daunting watching these types of videos (trust me, I watched a LOT before I left for SK) but once you look past that and explore, meet people, and maybe discover new things, you will forget about all the reservations you had! And for those who are afraid of racism, I won’t lie and say it doesn’t exist, because it definitely does. I’ve never experienced it myself, but I have seen it happen to others and have also seen stories on RU-vid. It’s sad and I won’t make excuses for Korea, but I’m going to say it is also largely attributed by the lack of diversity in the population and a lot of times people are not educated enough about other cultures. I have a close black friend in Korea and I have never seen anyone treat her badly... it’s more of a “wow, she’s different” kinda questions etc. I’m a tan Filipino however I never experienced racism during my time there. I remember a time when I was struggling HARD on the subway and these two grandma’s literally took one suitcase each from me and walked me out of the subway, and in the end they gave me oranges! I will never forget that experience. Countless times I’ve also asked strangers to call a taxi for me through an app and they even waited WITH me. Once, this kid said he’ll call a taxi for me but when his mom arrived to pick him up she offered me a ride! These are just some of my experiences during my time there. Just let this be a reminder that not all Koreans are judgmental (or when they are, they don’t always show it lol). As for produce, it is expensive in some places... I find that buying in wet markets is a lot cheaper as opposed to shopping in large supermarkets. To end this, I just want to say, everything that has been said in this video is VALID. I’m not saying she’s wrong. These are her experiences... but I really hope this does not become the deciding factor for someone who may be curious about Korea. I want to say go for it!!! I met so many people in my program who stayed beyond their term because they LOVED their experience. As for conforming- it WILL happen no matter where you decide to move to.. I believe it is human nature. When I’m back home I found myself conforming back to Western trends.. Most people conform certain standards depending on where we live and what we see on social media.. I feel that it’s part of life. There are good times and bad times just like back home, but at the end of they day these memories you will carry through the rest of your life ❤️

Disagree, I'm from Vancouver, every time I go back I can "taste" the air and that's coming from Japanese countryside. You can't compare, most of Asia, especially China, Korea, Japan have bad air quality because of all the coal fired electricity factories from China and the sand storms. The humidity in summer is insane. 80% with 35 celsius is really difficult, basically have to hide indoors under the air conditioning for summer. Racism, bigotry and just leaving people alone is not common. There is constant gossip, prying on your life, crazy questions like where are from? How long have you been here? How much is your salary? Are you married? Etc. Stuff that is way too personal but asked. As a person of Pilipino decent, you should know about the craze for whitening... Dark skin is considered dirty or not ideal. That's throughout Asia. Having a tan is not good even. Back in Canada, there's no way we would ask such personal questions or stare at people who are different. Why? Because we are taught from an early age staring is rude, asking personal questions is rude, different is okay.
@je.1873
@je.1873 4 года назад
@@studiokiselbach A K Thanks for sharing your opinion, as you are entitled to your own based on your personal experiences. Each person has their own tolerance with regards to weather, humidity etc. When I landed in Narita, Tokyo, the humidity was unbearable coupled with the 30+ degree celsius weather. In the weeks I stayed there I could not get used to it. In comparison to the humidity when I visited Manila a few years ago, I will gladly take Tokyo or Seoul. Not sure what you mean by Japanese "countryside" air... I have never heard of anyone refer to air in SK as such. During my travels, I found that it was easier for me to settle into "Korean" summer... and mind you my initial orientation was held for three weeks in Daegu, which is literally one of. the hottest and humid areas in SK. FYI, I wasn't comparing air quality between North America/Asia, I was comparing my own capacity to adjust to the new weather in SK as someone coming from a city with relatively high air quality. If you refer to my original posting, I believe I had made that quite clear. Ie. If someone from Japan moved to Korea it is easier for them to adjust to the humidity. As someone from Vancouver, the first few days was difficult but I got used to the Korean summer. Perhaps you may be a little more sensitive to changes in air quality and/or humidity. And yes, you are correct, as someone who is Filipino* I am very aware about the rampant societal issues stemming from the idolization of whiter skin. This is the case in most of Asia. Here in Canada it's not quite as blatant within Filipino communities as individuals usually learn that skin colour here does not matter as much. You can't say having a "tan" is not "good".. it's just not usually preferred. I never felt bad about myself in Korea and I'm nowhere close to being pale or on the "lighter side" of tan.. But then again, I just live my life as I see fit and I try not to let norms as such interfere with my enjoyment. Also as a Filipino I am used to intrusive questions being asked by relatives or other family friends. It's the same thing in Korea. I'm used to it. In my teens it bothered me but now I've come to realize this is the culture they grew up with and I understand most of the time there is no malicious intent with these questions. "Do you have a boyfriend? When do you graduate? How much is your salary now?" These are annoying questions indeed but you are never forced to give an answer. I've been asked where I'm from while in SK and it was not something that really bothered me... I mean clearly I'm not from there loool. I usually laugh and shrug. Mind you these people are good people, they just grew up in a different culture. And to be honest... Gossip is part of EVERY culture. In high school, university, within friendship circles.. it's everywhere. If you are someone who is extremely sensitive about your personal life you will have a hard time in Asian countries. We cannot possibly expect their culture to adjust to us when we are the ones visiting.. that's my two cents.. Imo how others treat us also has to do with how we approach them and if we are friendly. A lot of times they are just nervous to try and speak English. I knew the basics in Korean language having been associated with Koreans my whole life, so when I try to speak with them usually they are happy to help and even give me "service" (random freebies).

A K By the way I hope my response did not come off condescending as that was not my intention. Sometimes it’s healthy to agree to disagree. I just wanted to remind people that everyone will have a different experience and there are endless factors that will affect how we go through life in a foreign country especially SK. I wish for every person who wishes to and has the ability and resources to live in another country to do it. Because whether we go through a positive or negative experience there are lessons to be learned along the way... (as my dad has taught me! he lived in Guam, Saipan, Philippines, Korea... and he has hours and hours of stories to tell me!) I mean obviously not everyone wants to go through negative experiences.. but then again there’s no way to tell unless you push through with the plan!

@@je.1873 The street goes both ways as you may have heard in your travels. Understanding another culture, learning the language and cultural norms is wonderful and to be expected. Yet, when I mentioned that prying into to my private life by asking questions about my salary, if I get a bonus, where do I live, how long do you plan staying here, what does your wife do, why do you have a moustache, a beard, fat, etc... Those are questions that only close friends, family or maybe a superior in the work place might do where I come from. Is it too much to ask that understanding my cultural norms, obviously being not from here, that maybe it's too personal to me or rude? It's called empathy.

I can really relate, I lived in Seoul Korea the second semester of my sophomore year into my senior year of high school, but I was very depressed there idk what it was but I literally never left the house but I did my last 3 months there before I came back to the states and of course I’d go out here and there, anyway it’s beautiful and so lively, the food amazing, I can understand the individuality thing, I’ve always noticed similarities in their looks but being so young I didn’t notice much. I would love to go back, the people were very friendly, I didn’t have any problems with people treating me poorly. I wish I would of did more but it’s an experience I’m glad I had! 😌🙏🏾

As a Korean woman, I can understand what you said.People living in Korea also feel these kind of problems, but they must have been really hard for foreigners to go through.I think it's good to come and play for a while.But so tired to live as a member of society.Such convenience comes from human labor.also the night culture looks very passionate, but most people are very busy with their jobs everyday.if it's good, there's always a darkside. by the way I hope you had many good memories in Korea. For people coming to Korea from different cultures I hope you're not afraid to reveal your indivisuality. it cannot be denied that Koreans are sensitive to trends and the standards are not diverse compared to other countries.But ordinary citizens don't care about others.😂There can be psychological pressure.but no one blame ur individuality.

I'm Korean and I mostly agree with you. South Korea is basically a single-race nation. So korean might feel unfamiliar when you look different and there'll be less diversity too like standard beauty, a way of living, even life values. Also, because of Korea's rapid change in economy, we didn't enough time to change inner side so young generation is generally fine but some elderly people can be rude or racist. I think these are the reasons why you felt these things, and I'm really sorry for your bad experiences here.....

Why you apologized? I understand why but it is not your fault. I was born in South Korea and live in USA for many years. I traveled over 50 countries. I visited Europe in 1989 and experienced bad racism in France. I visied France again in 2019. I was little scared to visit to France again before I went back. But when I visited again, I had totally different good experiences in France. I was in France for 2 weeks and shared these two different experiences with a French lady. The end of the conversation I realized why my second experiences were good. I grew up to be more mature and opened to others. At the end, I realized it's my ATTITUDE and BEHAVIOR toward others, it was not about them. I changed to learn accepting others through the years. I am not saying bad is right. One lesson I learned during traveling many countries when you understand differences of each country and beauties of each country you become more happy. Every time when I come back from a new country, my friends ask my experiences there I have so many good things to tell my friends about the country. I will continue these positive attitudes and behaviors in coming new countries and I know I will have wonderful experiences. So open minded! If you see something bad, just do not make them as yours. Just bring good things back home and make as yours and also share goods with others. And then traveling will be so fun.

I totally respect your reasons and so glad to finally find a RU-vid who at least respects Korea’s lifestyle with out bashing it in a negative way because just like any other country Korea has a history. A story. And to be honest they haven’t even been an independent country for that long so it’s going to take sometime to find themselves which is why foreigners living and visiting will slowly help. It’s funny how just across Japan is a complete 180 in beauty standards, fashion and individuality. No country is perfect. Not even America but I love Japan just for the fact that places like Harajuku exist and many other parts that represent individuality..there’s parts of Japan that’s like Korea but that exist everywhere. America’s pretty big so we have a wider range but even we have trends and beauty standards here. I like that Japan has that option you know? The craziest Korea can get right now is Kpop idols but even they are finding themselves through their fans who are from everywhere which is so good because it shapes the upcoming generation. I also kind of feel like people have now taken interest in Korea for a number of reasons and forget that it was a country with their own set of rules , history, beauty and way living before waay before you liked it... basically remember that just because we have taken interest doesn’t mean Korea will have to accommodate to us...I think you have to mentally prepare yourself for that first and your interest second. They’re a small country slowly finding out about different things and slowly developing. I think if you’re mentally understanding of that you could live there. Kind of like Megan Bowen

Thank you for your honesty. The thing that worries me are all these Kpop/Kdrama fans going there just for that...it is like the anime fan going to Japan just for the anime. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong to love that stuff. I am a Kpop/Kdrama fan too. But, just like in Beverly Hills 90210 and Gossip Girl is not real life. Same with Kpop/Kdrama....Television is meant to amuse you and escape into another world. Hence, not real world. I am glad that Itaewon Class had touched on some real issues. That was the most non-typical Korean drama ever and I loved it. Don't get me wrong, I love my cute regular girl marries the hot CEO types too. If someone is interested they need to watch more than those aesthetically pleasing videos of foreign girl with a Korean boyfriend. Yes. I had watched those too. Because let's be real, they cute. One of my friend's sister went to study in Korea because of Kpop. She was disappointed that all the guys don't look like the ones one tv....no, duh...Not every American guy look like Brad Pitt...You need to find bloggers from all walks of life and for different reasons of why they moved to Korea or Japan. I don't know much about bloggers who lived in Korea. I am more familiar with Japanese bloggers. Also watch documentaries of that country. Those that talk about the big problems of those countries. So you know both of the good and the bad. Not just the cute stuff that Kpop/Kdrama shows. I recommend Vice and Asian Boss for starters. After your research decide if you just want to visit, do study abroad or live there.

I was just honestly nodding the whole time as you were mentioning the things I hate as a korean myself😂 air pollution, lack of individuality, crazy prices of fruit produce. I especially, felt deeply bout the small bubble part. Everyone is sorta in the lil bubble, which is technically true we are very densly populated considering the size of our country. It's really hard to explain into words tbh I feel like It's just the People that just constantly being nosey and interfere in other's businesses Under the concept of 정. I guess Its just the way our society is shaped in modern times. It's just really hard to be yourself, confident and having uniquness here in Korea as you r growing up. Cause you can't just keep ignoring ppl around u, as you are exposed to this kinda environment you autjomatically get the" confirming" part as ya said🤧 For example I like to wear sth that are not just regular boring copy fashion in Korea, and literally people judge me for wearning sth thats not usual lmao I mean I personally dont give any fucks Im the kind of dude who dgaf wot other sayin about me but even person like me since I'm constaly being exposed to this kinda environment I find this mentally exhausting. + As ya said. I meaN Even a grown adult like you get affected by standards here,🤦‍♂️ Imagine how shitty would it be as a teenager. It's just heavily ingrained into the korean society unfortunately. Literally everyone here feels the pressures some type of way in fheir own circumstances. It's honestly too much even for me who's literally a native person myself. So This is actually one of the reasons that Korean People wanna immigrate or whatever because we r just so sick of these social pressures. Idk Its just the education and society that make you grow into the person who's always concious and stressed of standards and what other people would judge you based on your education level or looks etc. Im not sayin other countries r beautiful wonderland but god, life here definitely stressing ppl out. Let me say dat. It's just hard to explain korean society into short, very complex. So this shitty system ends up producing too many "posers". Korea is like basically real life ver of ig. Sry for somewhat rambling here but yuh 😇

I feel like it’s gonna be really hard to learn Korean and it’ll be kinda pointless if I don’t live in South Korea😔 I’m starting to lose motivation.. any tips?

Hi Kali! I'm currently on my third year in Korea and I completely understand. I love Korea and it'll always be part of my heart but its not my forever home, It was truly a life changing experience living here and I'm so glad I'm doing it, but I want to leave here with only good thoughts and memories. No matter how much I try to blend in with the culture and no matter how good my korean becomes I will always be "That foreigner" and honestly, I miss my family haha.

loved this video - i live in seoul currently and plan on staying here long term but you make some interesting & valid points! i think it's important for people to share their experiences to help break those glorified kpop/kdrama stereotypes (no shade i do enjoy both those things, too). also can confirm - because of the virus situation, masks are pretty much mandatory everywhere you go now and i can tell you we are NOT excited to be wearing them all the time when summer really hits.... -_- thanks again for sharing!

as someone who has stayed in Korea multiple times, I can say that I do somewhat agree with your last statement. as much as I often dont acknowledge it, a lot of the time, not following the standard can result in a difficult time there. however I do want to say that that is her personal experience there, not everyone's. I've had multiple friends stay in korea for a while and not have too many problems. not to say that racism doesnt happen to people, but it's not everyone's experience. I think the racism there comes from the fact that they arent exposed to people who look different from themselves. not to mention that the culture itself is different, like how it's a very natural thing to comment on someones weight or to suggest plastic surgery and etc. it's not to offend you, but if you're a person who just hasn't lived in the culture, I understand how it could affect you. in the end, every country has its faults. I hope that if you do want to go to korea, you do a lot of research on the culture.

Don't let that stop you! I'm a foreigner living in Korea and the positives really do outweigh the negatives, I've only been here for 6 months and the people are amazing, I've made some really good friends, I think the main issue is that Korea has been a very sheltered, closed off country and due to kpop and what not, they're suddenly becoming increasingly more popular, so I understand why they'd look at foreigners weirdly, but they do it out of curiosity, I've never experienced any prejudice and the air thing has never affected me, of course I wear a mask when I'm supposed to but it doesn't hinder your quality of life, I think if you're mentally understanding of their culture and society as well as do enough research, you'll be fine.

@motro1301 4 года назад
Yeah. As a south korean myself i totally agree with all her points cause as every korean does we love our culture but there are these socio economic problems that certainly dont want them to live in korea. Cause its such a competitive society as in not "better" but in that it kinda makes people be in a race that they didnt even sign for from birth to the cradle and everything is so expensive and nearly unattainable especially like the house prices and everything. I think the main reason produce is expensive is because oranges and mangoes are like simply not common. Traditionally only jeju island had mandarin oranges and other regions traditionally consumed rice although recently there are a lot of tropical fruit farms opening as a result of global warming. One thing tho is that domestic produce is cheaper than foreign produce although youll know by now. Im actually surprised and shocked how our pollution levels are so high although its kinda true because we are influenced from the winds from china from yellow dust to factory smokes all over the place in china. In a way i think its inevitable for us to be free from pollution since a lot of factories in china were originally in korea or other countries and moved to china.At least we still have better air conditions than china since its still somehow filtered.
