Most Android flagships have eliminated the notch, using less-intrusive hole-punch camera designs instead. But Apple's iPhone still has one, even four years after its debut in 2017. And I’ll explain why right now.
it’s never been a problem for me just scroll down and plus no one lets it get really near the red after all it’s just the battery u just need a general idea of it
@@isdel1621 ? what the fuck are you even saying, iphone has the smoothest ui on an iphone, even the 60hz displays seem smoother than most cheap 120hz displays due to smooth animations, and i've never seen a flagship iphone lag before
the notch is now what the home button used to be, a recognisable design element. I wonder what they will do next because an all screen phone will just look like any other phone.
I kinda hope they keep the notch. If they can find a way to make it smaller, maybe combine some sensors in order to make room, I like the notch, it just needs to be a small size, no teardrop. Keep the notch.
Literally. They could’ve so easily done the fingerprint reader power button + hole punch camera design but didn’t cause that would make iPhones stand out less.
That is true, but the Huawei P40 Pro has 3D Face Unlock too and it takes up way less space, but you could argue that Apple just wouldn't want such a big cutout and just keep the notch because it is recognizable
guys, apple has the money to create a way for removing the notch. but what's next? they are trying to squeeze out every possible dollar from the current notch design before revelling there next new big design change. Because whenever this new one comes out, gess what, people will buy it and wait for the newer design after, i gess, 50 years, lol. Good Night Everyone :)
@@Alex-yj9xl Yes, you probably are. The 13 makes the 12 look ANCIENT and the SE look prehistoric in comparison. Idk why people like the notch; face ID is awful with a mask and the fact that I lose parts of my video with it is annoying as hell...
@@cameronbosch1213 u can just pull your mask 😷 down from your nose 👃 u don’t even have to take it off and faceid would instantly recognise your face… quit complaining about irrelevant things 🤦🏻
As someone who has had the iPhone 4, 5, 6, 7, and now the 12 pro, I have to say that the notch doesn’t really bother me, nor do I care how it looks. If they did adopt a notchless iPhones, then cool. Until then, I’m happy with what I have.
@@OMGIRLuniverse7 I don’t blame you. Hold off as long as possible and 1) it’ll feel like a true upgrade and 2) it’s better for the environment. That 2023 iPhone will really be a massive upgrade compared to the X.
@@darrel7589 oh I have a choice. I could go out and buy an Android right now and completely switch operating systems. I choose to stay with Apple because it suits my needs. If the notch was a big deal for me, I wouldn’t have an iPhone.
Haha wow. I use an iPhone and a Mac 24/7 but that argument makes me question the entire Apple fanbase. So what it looks like a 'Samsung' phone. It's still an iPhone. The notch has nothing to do with it. Unless, you clearly want people to know you are using an iPhone? Obviously, then you care more about what others think than the entire user experience.
@@jobheger no its just that the reason i like using iphone cus i like the layout more and the design i dont really like samsungs layout and design it has
It's still impressive that they got _that_ much technology out of a 1 inch notch. I honestly don't think much of it anymore due to how much I've used it.
Dunno why don’t they add Touch ID back into the power button. That power button is huge. It’d make a ton of sense too since it’s used for Apple Pay anyways.
@@kimchithatisnicelyfermente4627 Well of course we like it, iPad Air 4 here. Face ID: Power on and look at the screen, take down the facemask etc. Touch ID: Power on and already unlocked. It’s just one thing less to worry about.
Not gonna lie, I hated the notch when it was first revealed on the iPhone X, but it's grown on me to the point where I've switched to iPhone from Android and I actually think it looks better than a hole-punch, sure it takes up more of the screen but it looks less out-of-place than a single random hole.
Same I hated the notch before getting the iPhone X… after I got it.. I don’t even notice the notch anymore unless it’s pointed out to me somehow plus my phone has always been on dark mode from the beginning of iPhones having dark mode and I always use dark wallpapers.
@@SupremeCyril the other technology is better tho the notch is an interruption I used the 11 for a year and for me personally it was really distracting Got myself a oneplus 8t this year no regrets
I have an S21 Ultra. The hole punch camera doesn't seem out of place at all. I barely notice it. The UI does a good job hiding it most of the time. And honestly, I can see people getting used to the notch too. But my issue with the notch is the absolutely ridiculous fact that there is apparently no room for a battery percentage icon on the status bar??? And even though the iPhone 13 has more space up there, they still didn't add it in! You'd think maybe Apple would let you pick if you want a % or regular battery icon, but nah, they just want to control how you use your phone in every aspect.
I think there’s another reason : since Apple removed the home button, they needed to find a way to make the iPhone face recognizable and easy to be used as a "universal smartphone" logo, and currently the notch is the way they decided to do it since they found another way.
@Dice Yeah, but most forms of media accessible on phones today are designed to be for screens with taller aspect ratios. I'm pretty sure a lot of content is kinda messed up on the SE. For example, stuff that could fit in one line has to now awkwardly be fit in two lines. The 12 & 13 Mini are one-handed phone too but most content looks in place on them.
Personally I’m very much in favour of keeping the high security facial recognition that the iPhone has. Now that you’ve explained the notch has a very real and security purpose. My preference is to keep high security biometrics and the notch.
I used S20 and S21 after using XR. I could never use Samsung’s facial recognition due to its unsatisfactory performance and failure to recognise me more than half of the time. Always lived with fingerprint reader on Samsung. Now in masked world one may well say fingerprint ID is easy to use than Face ID but luckily I have Apple watch and Apple’s solution of unlocking iPhone with Apple watch is faster and more stable than Samsung’s fingerprint recognition too.
@@pearlsofwisdom101 I used an optical fingerprint scanner and it’s not perfect, occasionally you would have to re-position your finger so it can work, + the light flash from the scanner is blinding especially at night.
The ultrasonic sensor on the s21u is perfect, almost always works even with wet hands and you need your finger on your screen anyway. Also works in the dark or when wearing a mask
As far as I know its possible to use FaceId with masks by creating multiple „scans“ of your face with the mask partially on your face, I have to try this myself but if it truly works, I have to say that FaceId is still the best (at least for a lot of people) It just seems like magic everytime I unlock my phone, but sure, implementing a good inscreen fingerprintscanner and therefore removing the notch will be appealing to a lot of people. I personally like that its not just a square screen, but has some personality to it. In the 6 months that I have swapped to iPhone, I cannot remember a single time FaceId has not worked instantly even in absolute darkness, besides while wearing a mask but that might be solvable like I wrote at the beginning.
@@georgwagner4438 I think they haven't because apple is that company that takes security really seriously, with Touch ID, they had some weird electromagnetic sensors, so that even if you used the same person's finger and they were not alive, it would not work. Not sure if ultrasonic ones work the same way. But apple is that type of company tbh. They put 3D scans to make sure their face id is safe, they go ham to make sure everything works right.
They want to make it a BIG moment when they finally release a completely notch-less screen. Apple is not known for its biggest changes being gradual. They went from the massive iPhone 8 to the iPhone X. They are probably just waiting for the perfect moment.
I actually don’t think their solution will be something as simple as doing an onscreen fingerprint scanner due to the fact that Face ID is vastly superior and much more secure than Touch ID. I believe they’ll have to take the time to do what they do and invent a better solution that keeps Face ID around without the notch.
First of all, it’s marketing tactic. They must’ve planned everything. If they put every single new technology in their next phone, they’ll ran out of idea for the next following phone.
Fact here. The less you see a technology, the better it is. When I use Face ID I just don’t have a password. When I had a Touch ID phone. I needed to pose my finger on a sensor. This remind me that I have a passcode
@@Stitch42 that’s a great point. Never really thought of it that way. For me personally, when my face is covered at work with a mask, the Apple Watch negates that same feeling of being locked out with a password since it allows you to unlock the phone through that back door. When I had the 7, my work gloves wouldn’t allow me to even utilize the Touch ID, rendering it completely useless, which would always expose my passwords to anyone paying attention.
Coming from someone who just had a iPhone 6 and se 2020 now with the 11 which is also my first iPhone ever with out bezels it’s a HUGE difference in screen size then I thought it would be, the notch is not a problem for me one bit lol
Wish you made online classes simpler like you gave a cool and easy explanation of why iPhones still have notch, like I understood your theory more better than my syllabus and everything lol haha
But still, why do we have to have a more expensive technology like face ID and settle on having a notch if fingerprint scanner works fine and are secure? I don't understand why Apple can put a fingerprint scanner on ipod's power button but not in iPhone.
To be honest, after using my iPhone X since the day it was release, I really don't find it that obstructing on the screen, I even like it since it is different from the competition on the market.
i like the notch its like iconic on iphones it could be told if its a iphone unlike other phones adapting to hole punch cameras which now makes it hard to know what phone it is
Actually if you look at in-display cameras from Chinese and Samsung phones, you will see that there are needed software corrections to remove the haze and improve image quality. I doubt Apple will do that to keep the Face ID components to be under the display. But if Apple can still reduce the size of the notch to be like a pill-shaped notch, it is much better of course.
I really don't mind the notch on my iPhone XR. I usually don't see it and if I do, it's easy to ignore. I will be okay sticking to the notch for as long as it needs. Plus, without a notch, it might be harder to open Control Center, something that the notch does well.
While some people here are stating that the notch can be a good design feature too like the iconic home button there are many people using or trying the same idea with a much smaller notch to sort of get into the apple theme, however most ad campaigns have stopped using notches in their makeshift phones and instead adopting the notchless approach. To me personally I think, if anything the 3 cameras BEHIND the phone are a lot more iconic or atleast on the same level, and to my knowledge there are barely any other phones out there with the same camera layout. And from the looks of the iphone 14 concepts and the guaranteed removal of the notch, the 3 camera layout will stay the same for atleast another 4 years.
I say between 3-5 years that when you see more upgrades. I went from the 6 to 7+ to XR now 13 Pro Max. There’s certainly no need to upgrade every year and complain “it’s the same as last year”. That’s just stupid
You’re not in the majority by any means but honestly I have to agree with you. It’s as iconic as the single home button was on the original iPhone and I actually like the appearance of it. Something about it looks so sleek and modern.
@RU-vid Nutzer I didn’t say that at all. If you see my comment, I said it is an iconic look AND I also happen to like the look of it. I separated the two out and stated that I do like the look of it personally even though I know that’s the unpopular opinion. I’m sure iPhone will find their way out of the notch eventually.
@RU-vid Nutzer also you didn’t need to be rude. Just bc someone likes something you don’t doesn’t mean you need to shit on their opinion. We can all be a little nicer to each other.
I would prefer a side mounted fingerprint scanner embedded into the power button (like the iPad mini has on top) instead of under screen fingerprint scanner. And Face ID, even if it is secure, it's not the most convenient form of unlocking since it doesn't unlock if it is sitting on a desk without your face in sight for example, or with a mask on. Power button for me would be the way to go, and a notchless screen.
Anyone that says the notch looks fine, or they actually liked it, you just have very poor appreciation for aesthetics, a.k.a. bad taste. Doesn't mean anything else.
The notch was the only thing keeping me from upgrading but I guess I don’t have to upgrade me XS Max anytime sooner or later cause it’ll all look the same till then
I still think they should make it into a long pill so that the screen space above the notch helps your brain eliminate it from your vision quicker. This would also get Apple more sales as it would provide a very noticeable visual redesign.
The Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner can do a 3d scan of your finger which eliminates the need for facial recognition. Idk why apple is not using it since Samsung has been using it since the S10(2019) and the face is not always exposed for people at all times unlike the finger.
The in screen finger print sensors are incredible. Sometimes way too accurate, and way too fast. I don't understand why FaceID is still a thing when you still need to swipe on the lock screen to access your phone just like how you still need a finger on the fingerprint sensor. To me, that eliminates the whole point of using FaceID when it's suppose to be seamless and takes you to the home screen instantly. With finger print sensors, you can place your finger on the sensor even when the screen is turned off, and unlock the phone instantly, to me that is a way faster and convenient.
greg please explain that why iphones are coming with a sensor light these days because it is observed that a sensor light blinks in camera when we open our recent iphones
A little misinformed. Most Android face unlocks, while maybe less secure, are a lot faster. Even with slower face unlocks, you'll be at the home screen quicker because you don't have to do an additional swipe Samsung specifically has 2 modes. It's default mode is more secure and has protection against the image spoofing you mention. You can also switch it to the fast mode, which can be spoofed but it's a lot faster.
@@cameronbosch1213 If you have a Apple Watch I’m pretty sure you can unlock it with a Face ID compatible iPhone but for some reason that feature doesn’t exist on the iPhone itself.
@@overshabby I got rid of my og Apple Watch when I switched from Apple; couldn't use it on Android, so I gave it to another family member who still uses her iPhone. She likes it, but I can't go back to Apple following the 13 series repair issues, which I am pissed at Apple for doing. No excuse.
@@dugtrioramen I know; the Huawei P40 Pro had the sensors in a pill-shaped cutout. Not sure why Apple cannot do it, but I know why they WON'T do it... 🙄
Ultrasonic FPS is matured enough that Apple can use it . The new Qualcomm Ultrasonic FPS is very big and fast . It is used on the Iqoo 8 pro device and I think apple should start using it from next year and give full screen display .
actually i like the notch but there will be a change in iPhones that will make them different in an other way and it will get critism but it will be great like the last changes too.
I don't want indisplay fingerprint sensor in place of face id. Face id is just more convenient and seamless. It even allows me to read the notifications without touching my iPhone when I am working.
I like this. Though, I didn't know Apple used 3D recognition. So, as soon as I heard that, I knew it was considerably more secure than the 2D one. Also glad that they shrank it, but, I feel that the notch helps to distinguish the iPhone from the android phones. Would love to see them do a folding phone similar to the Razr though.
@@lars3001 lol, i've got a Razr; but, I'm more curious about how Apple would design their own. It's not a requirement for them, just curiosity. And, as for distinguishing themselves from others, there's plenty of companies that like to mimic each other. While this won't stop them from trying to mimic Apple, if Apple were to keep the notch (even when it's no longer necessary), it would help to add a certain aesthetic to their name/brand. Sure, their GUI is great, but, if the screen's off and you only get a quick glance at it, you're not going to know what brand it is, if you're looking for the GUI to tell you. Consider that, there's many companies that will make a product, but, will do so with a distinct design, so that, at a glance, you'll immediately know what it is. Case in point, right now, you can identify Samsung's and Motorola's phones apart from others, simply cause they fold; though, that assumes you happen to have those. Whereas, how can you really identify an apple phone at a glance, if it's piled together with other similar looking phones. Though, they do have certain features that help to keep it distinct, there's nothing wrong with adding more to it to help out. I'm honestly willing to bet Samsung will figure out the notchless design and have it more or less perfected by the time Apple releases their own (assuming they're not already on it and about to release that model next year, or so), and in so doing, will allow all other android phones follow suit. The notch would just be a neat design feature for Apple if they were to go with it. Again, none of this is required, it's just my thoughts on the matter. But, there's typically certain design aesthetics to keep in mind with products, especially if you're interested in sticking out from everyone else, which Apple typically aims to do.
They might implement in display fingerprint if it would meet their standards? But the fingerprint scanner on my Samsung works just fine??? Why can't they just add it already?
@@kamencic Well as you know people gather up in a circular table, place their phones face up, then turn the table and finally must pick the correct phone. There's also brand recognition, which is why many of these people buy Apple anyways. They think buying iPhones mean Apple's wealth transfers to them somehow 🤷♂️
I honestly like Face ID more though because I have sweaty fingers sometimes that makes Touch ID hard to recognise me but also the double click lock button confirmation whenever I buy apps or make an in-app purchase for Face ID means I won’t accidentally buy things I don’t intend to when I was trying to leave the app after accidentally click on the offer first
I would be happy if they simply removed everything from the top, no notch, no punch hole, no front facing camera, replace face ID with touch ID (which at least works with facemasks). They could even produce two versions and let people decide which one they want. The notch and punch hole are both as intrusive imo.
A front camera isn’t even mainly for selfies. It’s used for video calls a lot. Can you imagine during this pandemic if no one saw each other’s face while in quarantine? A phone isn’t a professional camera. I feel like the back camera is used less than the front camera. And by ‘everyone’, (let’s not be close minded because the front camera has multiple uses) the “pros” aren’t here to focus on the looks. Why get a phone if it’s not convenient? Get a flip phone and professional camera instead since a smarrphone is for convenience
@@Lauren_Cat Well that's why they should make a version with selfie camera and one without. I don't do videocalls with my phone I use a macbook and a stable internet connection. Streamers use PCs aswell. I hate people with blurry laggy vertical video on zoom meetings or facetime lol, feels like devolution. Specially on work video calls. Having a camera on the front and the back seems silly to me, specially if it's going to disrupt the clean design of the product.
If apple remove face id and add on-screen fingerprint ill love apple more and more … the thing is everyone is trying to make iphones design same as samsung or any android device but no one try’s to make a new very useful idea that fits the technology well and satisfy everyone with less expensive product of course
personally i preferer the notch as it just looks 10x better than a hole. i also think it helps separate the top of the screen abit more making it so that the layout of the battery and wifi (etc) fits alot better
How does it look better than the punch hole? How can you deal with a phone that has a massive black bar on top?. I find that shit distracting and it’s the number one reason why I will never go to an iPhone with a notch.
the notch was ugly and the so cold dynamic Island is even uglier, this is only reason I'm sticking with the android, Apple is still living in 2012 while android is going 2050..
The other point is that Apple has invested a lot of money in developing and improving the IR tech - generation over generation, and it doesn't seem logical to do away with it in just 4 iterations. Moreover, the under display camera tech isn't mature enough, but the under display fingerprint scanner surely is.
