That is a very wrong way to look at education. Being good at something and being good at teaching something are two very very different skills. There is a whole fucking scene about this in 3idiots. Most of the top directors comes from small towns where they get stories and experience of life which they can use to make films. If these type of aspiring directors get into film school they will choose some technical course such as editing, animation, cinematography. Because this things will give them initial job and entry in the industry. Thats why most of the top directors comes from non-film school or they do, then its mostly technical department.

If you go to film school you might not get chance to be a director but you learn about lights sound camera script editing cinematography direction production everything and can start a career from anywhere.

Anurag Kashyap is a very capable filmmaker. But here I disagree with him. First of all, 'becoming directors' doesn't apply to Hindi Mainstream only. There are many directors who are film school passouts in India working in the independent cinema, art house cinema and regional cinema industries. The real reason why directors passing out of film schools don't opt to make films because they keep themselves engaged as 'directors on hire' in other lucrative audio-visual industries such as advertising. Going the design school route could be a good experiment except that in film school the teaching is more direct and hands on, you actually get a camera to look through the viewfinder and shoot. His idol, Martin Scorsese is from a film school. He can say that film school is not necessary to become a director, but saying that film school does not teach anything is in my opinion, mistaken. And, it was Andre Bazin, a film theorist, who laid the foundations for Truffaut and Godard to accomplish as filmmakers. Saying that theorists can't teach anything is saying that Newton wasn't responsible for Neil Armstrong to go to the moon. It's unjustified and disdainful to the film theorists who have extensively studied cinema and passed on their knowledge to the filmmakers of tomorrow who can use that knowledge in a more practical setting.
Very true! Plus in film school you meet your seniors, teachers and you get exposure of the industry. Film school passouts make their own films, ads, documentaries and they continue filmmaking. Entering into the mainstream industry is tough, and getting funds to make a movie many times depends on luck. Anurag is a genius but here he is wrong.
You get that too in film school. Even better, you get equipment to learn how to use too. Besides, you get contacts, that might be THE most important thing.

🏆🌟👏Anurag is correct because he couldn't explain that to become director - the person needs to have perspective or story to make audience experience the journey of the characters. Film schools are obsolete because any child, person with accessible camera, dslr, action camera, mobile phone, Handycam - can create/edit/post content.
One who is best in theory will give you all theories. Don't expect practicality from him. One who is practically known. Take his practical experience don't expect theory from him. Mix both of them and make creative you with optimum content. It's my view point...
Don’t listen to anyone cuz he’s successful not going to film school doesn’t mean You shouldn’t do it too, everyone’s life is different so are their experiences, education is important that's why institutions are their go for educational purposes, practicality is for you to self learn
according to this we directors pick old stories but techincally audience expect soo technical stuff in a normal story .. they are talking about editing, cinematography and every aspect frames in movies... they are so advanced in this reels generation...film making is great jon in our life...we know every crafts but we dont know how to balance these crafts....i had financial problems and lot of anxiety and fear to make even my first short films... we should be advanced in making film...trust in joining film school that we have learn something.... i prefer to go film school....please keep it mind to how to lead your life
I love anurag. But the point I feel where the contradiction is that he says I cannot learn anything from a person who has not made a film. How does NID satisfy that category?
By that logic any coaching institute shouldn't exist because the teachers are the one who failed and didn't succeed in it and those who succeed didn't became a teacher
Both are different thing. Filming a movie is more practical and creative process. Passing any qualifying Exam is just about memorizing whatever you have in your syllabus. But after qualifying for engineering or medical, you need professors who know the practical implication of that theoretical knowledge.

Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of times u can tell when a director went to film school to learn film making...they put unnecessary emphasis on details that don't matter just to make their films look artsy/experimental...they r too much in their head...as a result film making becomes like a masturbatory process where they try to come off as more intellectual than their heroes...and off course not all of them but a lot of them..
He is speaking facts it's true that the chances are low to success as a career.. but we should see that the one who're passed from FTII are the actual gems of Film Industry.. Sriram Raghvan..Rajkumar Hirani..Vidhu Vinod etc. their films are blessing to the country!! 🤍
He isn't wrong. It's not just about the degree. It's more about the environment. He's right about how the peer pressure gets to you. It's so important to choose the right school or the right company cuz you'll become like that. Hanging around with people who experiment and keep creating something, that's gonna be you. Hanging around with people who just sit and complain, that's gonna be you. And you will find all kinds of people in film schools. So, it's all about your company.
That way only medical colleges are meaningful. That is the only place where those teaching you are practising what they are teaching. Otherwise most of the people in engineering colleges are not practising practical engineering. Most people teaching in law school are not advocates or judge either.

U need to study now... What does it mean by IAS... For the Director, direction is the subject. For IAS aspirants:- History, geography, political science and many more subjects has to study... Each subject needs specialists from that subject. Since UPSC coaching-vale higher faculties from various field...even IAS officers also.. BUT FOR Successful Person always need life experiences... He said in the sense of an experienced person from his field.
