I love how Emily is trying to absorb all these Korean cultures, even though it might be somewhat uncomfortable and weird in some ways. I am Korean but that's the kind of spirit that most of us Koreans lack of (in my perspectives). It is always hard to take another step further but just by watching her videos I feel inspired already! Thank you Emily and as always take care of yourself!
You don't have to transfer garbage by hand. just grab the bag out and put the whole thing in official garbage bag. You also have to remove labels from plastic bottles and recycle them with plastic bags. Bottles themselves have to be compressed to reduce volume, rinsed if it contained anything other than water. Clear bottles and non clear plastic bottles also have to be separated. Bottle caps can be left on the bottle. Disposable food containers from delivery have to be washed then separated and recycled as well. It is a major pain in the butt to properly recycle in Korea. However, I feel that it is the price you have to be willing to pay if you want convenience. In US we have very large land we can just pollute the hell out and we probably won't feel anything from it within our lifetime but the future generations...?? Korea doesn't have that luxury.
In Korea, it is mainly husbands who throw away trash or separate trash. The goal for the environment is clear, such as preventing continuous resource consumption and reducing global warming through recycling rather than using resources once and discarding them.
I love your videos. Always waiting for it. You can find proper size of trashcan at supermarket, 'Daiso' or sth which is fit for 20L standard garbage bags. Usually it reads "for 20L" on a package. You don't have to do "transferring things" whatever 😂. Have a good weekend Emily!
Hi Emily, due to the unpleasant incident with the old man last time, you got quite a bit of exposure in the Korean newspapers. Whether it's fortunate or unfortunate you became somewhat famous in Korea :) Godspeed!!
2:20 I think you should use that officially marked general trash bag for your penguin trash can. Then you don't have to move all your general trash from the normal plastic bag.
The method of separating and collecting trash is becoming more and more complicated. Cost is a problem, but even Koreans have to keep adapting because of the increasingly tricky separate emissions. But it is a must for the global environment and future generations.
Papers, plastics recycled. Food garbage will be treated and converted into plants food. Other dry garbage will be incinerated and being a source of heat as well.
This is an explanation from a local Korean who speak english. I dont sort trash at the place because it takes time and it is smelly and dirty. I sort trash at home with several big bags every time I throw away each trash. It is kinda like having multiple trash cans. And then I carry all of it outside and just pour it in.
My wife and I spend several months each year in Korea. A part of that is with in-laws in Daegu. The key to handling garbage/recycling is a systemic approach back in the apartment. You don't want to sort it out standing in front of the various trash/recycling bins.
As a Korean, I found out after recycling. First, plastic bottle caps are not recycled in the end even if they are collected separately at home. Second, it may vary from region to region, but Koreans who feel skeptical about recycling are actually Throw all the rest in a 50L, 100L garbage bag.Of course, large pet bottles, cans, glass and paper are excluded. It is meaningless that all countries do not recycle and only in Korea. In fact, recycling is not good in Korea either. Convenience store lunch boxes require washing and throwing away plastic, which is practically impossible, so who would wash and recycle them and throw them away after company lunch?
it's so true, in california there is only 3 bin. one is for trash, one is for recyclables like paper and plastic, and the plant matters. but i found out that they just dump the trash bin and the recyclable bin in one pile. It doesn't make sense at all to have separated bins if you're gonna just dump it in one pile. at least the plant matter does go to a facility where it does get processed into a compost.
I really like your videos. They’re really informative and a nice getaway from everyday life. Wish I could travel more. I’m also from Minnesota. What part are you from? I live in the St. Cloud area currently.
I enjoyed your last video, I think more content like that would be better for your channel, I never would have come across it w/o that video. Showing the real side of korea over the fake marketing their government has been spewing all over. Controversial topics are a much better way to get views, I hope you can post more footage of those types of encounters.
I highly doubt that those "recyclable rubbish" like plastic bags get actually recycled. I think it may be all unnecessary effort and waste of human time, because maybe sooner or later, A.I. robots will be advanced enough to do the separation automatically. If it's so, we can just put all the rubbish without separation for a while and let future robots do the separation.
