I tried Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time. It's a stunning and beautiful game but it's also an open world adventure and the whole time I'm wondering, why?

A few things I want to clarify based on early comments: 1) This video is edited with "progressive revelation" meaning that misunderstandings early in the game may be later uncovered/learned. 2) I did scan all machines for weaknesses and actively used them. Still often felt like I did little to no damage. 3) I watched every cutscene/paid attention to the story. 4) none of the above means I still couldn't have missed things that may or may not have been obvious. This is just my experience as someone approaching the game for the first time ever with no background knowledge of it and limited knowledge of how games convey information. I also know I will often miss obvious things, it's just how my mind seems to work.

This game and the sequel have the hardness levels specifically designed for story telling. The easiest you do a ton of damage and knock parts off really easily. Once you hit normal, you have to target individual parts. Hard and above are logrithimic in damage output and require you to use the exact arrow against every exact weakpoint. They become more about the hunt, more about stealth. If you do the sequel I recommend Easy for first play through as all the difficulty levels shifted harder than their previous versions. You also get really good weapons and armor by the end of the game if you do a lot of the side quests. The difficulties levels scale really well if you do a NewGame+ with the enhanced stuff.

That is your shortcoming, not the game. I played the same game you did. I learned every aspect of the game from the game. Read the menus, pay attention, focus... it's not that hard. You could have had such an easy time through the game if you took the time to learn and actually explore. Didn't learn of the crafting until halfway through the game when one of the early missions is to literally use the crafting system to make fire arrows. Never once thought to go back in and make other weapons and use them to different effects. This whole video was frustrating. When you don't pay attention and keep getting worked over for it and keep making jokes, you aren't funny or entertaining. Learn the game. Do another video. I dare you.

If you play the sequel, just pick Normal or Easy mode. No shame in the latter, if it means you enjoy the experience more. So many of your complaints about the combat sound less like problems with the game and more like problems you made for yourself by choosing to play on Hard right off the bat. You say you wanted a challenge, but then you go and complain that you're... given a challenge? Dude. Bro. Broski. You can lower the difficulty to Normal at any time, if you're having a bad experience, and go for Hard on NG+. Noone will revoke your nerd cred. It's okay.

"after playing the game I still don't know why those beasts exploded" eesh, that's a major mechanic! The machines are built with different parts that are vulnerable to different things like fire and tear. Blaze containers explode if you set them on fire. The way to take advantage of a machine's weaknesses is to take advantage of its parts' weaknesses.

machines have different weaknesses, but their parts also have their OWN weaknesses. some can really cause devastating AOE damage or effects. freeze is totally OP before doing arrow damage. its best to find different strategies in dealing with different machines. most can be taken out with different strategies and at varying efficiency. personally vs sawtooths i like to burn them with fire arrows a few times, and do 1-2 silent strikes if possible. i can also go for their canister but i usually dont as i can use its blaze loot instead. they also burn really easily with 1-2 fire arrows (when modded for fire). shocking them is also very easy, even with the basic tripcaster. this makes them extremely easy to defend against if u decide to use these for protection and to make them an easy target.

Did you finish the video? I did pay attention and watch through every cutscene. These videos are made so that my current understanding of events is exactly what's being expressed, when it's happening. Like my misunderstanding of the bad guys during the proving, I thought they were one thing and so I expressed what I thought they were in the moment only to later learn what they really were. As for mechanics, some people have mentioned I missed things like machine weaknesses, but this is not the case as I did actively scan every beast, read each weakness, and used the corresponding weapons. Sometimes it worked and sometimes I felt like it didn't help at all, thus the confusion.

The thing is, there IS stuff to explore for. You can find side quests that give you neat gear, beautiful environments, merchants that sell useful items, new machines you don’t find through the story, and collectables if you’re into that sort of thing. You can even find 3 power cells hidden across the entire map to unlock an armor set with a regenerating shield that basically gives you a second (smaller) self healing health bar. Also you seemed to only use the standard bow when there’s a lot of other useful options such as slingshots with elemental bombs to easily inflict certain status effects, the tearblaster or tearblast arrows to easily strip armor off of enemies, and the war bow to hit canisters with their associated elemental damage to make them explode and do big damage. You can kill even the strongest machines very quickly if you know how to actually take advantage of their weaknesses. (Except corrupters. Those guys just suck.)

I think zero dawn has one of the best storylines of any game I've played. The carja/nora stuff is secondary imo, the real story is finding out about the ancient civilisation. Seeing all these machines, that were originally peaceful, but now are aggressive and dangerous, but nobody knows why. How/why do the machines even exist in the first place? Finding out about Elizabet and zero dawn, figuring out how they beat the faro plague. But then you have a HUGE revelations from general harres and elizabet, and everything jsut clicks into place. You see the deer, crocodile, and hawk machines and understand their purpose. What the cradles are, how civilisation came to be in the new world. Its unfortunate you "checked out" due to the cult storyline :( On the combat, whilst there was a couple things you missed; i think the main thing was that, weak points / weaknesses make the fight easier, but by no means do they make it easy. Every machine is supposed to be a challenge, especially the huge ones like thunderjaws and deathbringers. I think the open world is debatable / personal preference. I wanted to find all the machines and fight each one. Can I kill these guys super stealthily? Can i face them head on in open battle, etc... Plus you got the option of things like the cauldrons. There's a lot that you can do, being open world gives the player the choice. Good video tho :)

Based on your commentary, you missed a lot of stuff the game tells you/implied The Sawtooth that exploded, exploded because your fire arrow hit a Blaze canister on the bottom (think that’s where it’s located) which caught fire long enough to explode. You’re a clone of Elisabet Sobeck. GAIA explains that to you when the two of you meet. The identiscan in Mother’s Heart after Aloy is knocked out said you’re a 99% match for Elisabet, or some similarly high percentage. GAIA said because things got to the point of no return she took Elisabet’s genetic material and cloned it to make Aloy, leaving Aloy outside the door in Mother’s Heart in the hope that she could one day fix things The enemies and machines that rely on ID confuse Aloy for Elisabet

The damn game won like four awards. I played this same game with no experience with this genre; I loved this game, and understood every single mechanic as it was introduced. @ThroarbinGaming you literally did no exploring or seeing half of the game. There is a lot there in terms or visual story telling and side quests. Did you know you can ride just about every machine in the game? No, because you did squat for paying attention or world exploring. Hell, you didn't pay attention to shit for the story or how to play the game, then complain about the story and how to play the game. There are weapons and strategies effective for each machine, none of which you used. It was not a death cult. It was the fallen regime of the Carja, lied to and used by the big bad machine. Play the damn game before you review a game. Stop rushing through without learning it and saying its a bad game. Down voting every video until you learn this lesson.

I'm sorry to be the annoying one. but I honestly think that all of your doubts and problems with the game are strictly linked to your lack of attention. I mean, not to be a douche, but how can you not open the main manu for half of the game? Not understanding there is a crafting menu, or the map fog can be uncovered, is a huge problem. The game itself tell you to open it every single time something has changed (like the map with the tallneck). As far as it concerned your lack of damage onto machines, every time you scan a new machine with the focus, the game tells you to open the menu to see how to fight it(as far as i could see from the video, you didn't even set ablaze one machine, like the scorpion one which is weak to fire). It's litterally the main mechanic. Don't let me start on the story part, "game why are they here? how they get in? Is there any other way in?" yes it is, and the game explicitly tells you why they are there in the cutscene. I don't want to be a douche, but man it feels like you played a completely different game from me.
@ThroarbinGaming
@ThroarbinGaming 3 месяца назад
I think there's a major misunderstanding here. I did open the main menu, but I don't comb through menus in games nor do I want to. I expect mechanics like crafting to be something engaged with in game and not from a menu screen. Maybe it's just my understanding of games up to this point, but that's how I look at them. So having things like crafting in the main menu was a foreign concept to me. Knowing how fog is removed is pretty obvious after checking the map several times. My only confusion was not noticing what the first tall neck did. It simply didn't occur to me that it impacted the map and in the end it didn't matter to me whether it did or not. I am also fully aware of the weaknesses of machines and would use the according weapons and tools while attacking the appropriate weak points. Even when I did I often found I did minimal damage
@kimberlyread4811
@kimberlyread4811 2 месяца назад
Not every game is for everyone. I will say, a lot of understanding the story requires you to engage further with the game than you did…reading things, playing side quests. Forbidden West is an even better game than this one, but it requires engagement that I don’t think you’re willing to give. The fighting mechanics are some of the best in any game I’ve ever played but do require some time to learn. In fact, in the second game, using elemental damage is used even more extensively in machine fighting and you didn’t seem to catch onto it and its more limited capacity in this game. I would still recommend Forbidden West, though.

"Or else add more reason to explore, maybe bows and armor or special futuristic weapons that can only be found or crafted by exploring." I'm pretty sure throughout the game that power cells should have been placed somewhat along your path, I KNOW there is one in all-mothers temple. From the NG+ Footage though it seems you really didn't get the shield weaver armor which is pretty much exactly what you are speaking about there I would think. Either way, been checking out the channel and I'm finding it fun being reminded all the habits I take for granted at times in games, especially since I'm the sort of person to make sure I read most notes and details I come across. I can't say I've ever really been critical about the death cult plotline before since in many cases including novels and stories, sometimes it can be easier to fast-track people without reasons, because people will sometimes just accept there are some in the background. I can't justify you not checking vendors for half the game though like in the case of the fast travel bag, that one is a bit more of a weird one to me since that's also a funnel for all the items you seemed to hoard. I can get behind enemies on hard mode, being a bit difficult to just hit randomly. Many games of this type straight up make enemies 'bullet sponges' or their equivilent on higher difficulties since it can be hard to have different AIs for different difficulties within a game Plus the game does get a bit specific with it's weak spots and sometimes the focus which lets you see past some of the armour, makes you think you can hit it when things need to be removed first and other conditions.

The main story in full is pretty cool, but you do need to pay attention through a lot of cutscenes to get it all. They’re certainly annoying on replays. I think the open world is mainly useful for training combat and learning weaknesses of (most) enemies, as there isn’t really a guide on it beyond the first few you encounter. So basically you’d have to experiment and read the docs, but that’s definitely not for everyone.

@@ThroarbinGaming i think most of the things i'm going to say are explained at some point but i think it sucks when the biggest source of information is a non blocking prompt that pops once when you're at the point where you discover the mechanic and then never seen again. Also, i'm writing this as i'm watching the video : - when the focus highlights the weak part, it shines through other parts, meaning you don't see if there's reinforcement on it, that's probably why you kept missing. - the sabertooth explosion was due to a fire arrow landing on the blaze canister (machines have various types of elemental canisters that explode when you land an arrow of the corresponding type on them) - the you probably felt like element did nothing because it was only building up, when you shoot a fire arrow, you fill a fire circle and only when it's full does it set the machine on fire (at which point a white circle appear representing the time left with the machine on fire) - bows have spread and it's not well explained (the default bow draws quick but is only precise on short distance, sharpshoot bow is slow but really precise), idk if handling influences spread but i know it does draw speed (i think the circle on the hud represents "how precise" the bow is rather than the spread, i didn't think about it because i though about it like guns, quick gun = less precise, sharpshoot = sniper) - idk if you understood this but if you break a machine's part, it disables some of it's attacks (most of the time) and non elemental arrows have a "break" stat (for example, the purple sharpshoot arrows do no dmg but instead deal massive aoe break dmg, meaning you can break several parts at once) - most of the time, breaking a part deals massive dmg, so it's often a good idea to break anything you can when engaging (also, some machines like the dinosaur have weapons you can use after breaking them, making the fight easy) - when you die, you're loaded at your last save - you can fast travel for free from fire camps (i think, maybe it's a forbidden west thing?) and you can later on buy an unlimited travel bag. But, even though you traveled manually for the 1st half, it seemed like you missed a lot of things (for instance, the only towns marked on your map you went to were those where the main quest made you go through and you also never went to any of the side content spots (like cauldrons, hunting grounds, etc)) - the cultists get in the locked thing because when you enter it, it get depressurized, making them able to enter through the vents (ඞ) - they're a death cult (they were followers of the previous carja king that liked to do genocides, they got kicked out of the carja territories when avad, the genocider's son, killed him, that's why everybody hate the carjas) - giraphes are not needed, you still need to go up a campfire at least once to travel to it. With the way you played, they didn't bring much, but for those like me that like to do everything but the main quest, it's nice to know the location of side content - fuck ted faro, all my homies hate ted faro - the kind loves strong women (he had a thing for erend's sister and project onto alloy since she saved him) - also, if you clear side quests, there are npcs you've helped that will come assist you in the final quest (like northeast of meridian there's a quest chain where you help the oseram woman you developed the cannons you use in the final fight, so she's there to shoot with you if you've helped her) - it's explained in the story that you're her clone, you were created by gaia after she self destructed to not be corrupted by the sentient hades

I think that in the medium of videos talking about video games, usually in-game talk on a worse mic is for live reaction/not knowing stuff yet, whereas the talk with the better mic later is usually for knowing about everything already and talking about it afterward. I think that some people seeing this video didn't get that the better-mic-commentary was a "progressive revelation" thing because of what people are used to in other videos in this genre/medium/whatever. I loved watching this and seeing how others experience things. its so interesting how someone can experience something entirely different from what i did, and that's one of the reasons i love videos like this. I'll admit that I had a lot of fun with this game my first play through and maybe going through it again can give me a new perspective and find some faults in its design that never occurred to me as obviously there were some issues with the game explaining many of its mechanics. playing on normal probably wouldn't have required as much investment in other mechanics as hard would have probably. honestly the difficulty choice may have affected your first playthrough quite a bit when it came to the gameplay. but that's just speculation on my part. as for what i believe the harder you set a difficulty the more the game requires you to interact with all its mechanics. and it just didn't seem to be teaching you those mechanics very well at all! Ropecasters attach to monsters then to the floor and pulls them down to reveal their bellies where their weakpoints are, like the sawtooth. Nailing the more aggressive and larger machines down with the ropecaster hinder them greatly and allow for free damage to their weakpoints. Hitting weakpoints is preferred for every shot you take in this game instead of blinding firing at the body, you’re shooting metal with arrows not bullets after all. (sharpshot bow are like the best bows especially if they have tear precision arrows to knock off armor/attached weapons and do big damage) Watching their walking patterns and setting up explosive and electric tripwire works for both human and machine, and blast slings are my favorite to rain on them. I know you said you’re a very much Point A to Point B person but I feel you missed out on so much world building based on character interactions, cause Erend isnt Carja??? hes Oseram?? Also thinking Erend is the villain LMAO HE FLIRTING WITH ALOY AS SOON AS MEETING HER, i thought it was charming but like in a lame and cute way but Aloy doesn’t notice it either since Rost NEVER showed her kindness of a father and she never learned social queues due to her having limited to no interaction with individuals of the Nora tribe (much less her age) due to being an outcast.

please look into setting a higher bitrate if possible. i know this game with all the foliage requires a higher bitrate, but you can look into CQB (constant quality bitrate) where you can set a quality and it dynamically changes bitrate to whatever is needed to keep a certain level of quality

If you then like the genre (metroid-Vania) there are others like Blasphemous. Also warframe, interesting to see the new player experience.

My conclusion from watching this is that this isn't a great type of game for you, and you would be far better off playing it on the easiest difficulty so you can focus on following the linear sections. This game on harder difficulties requires an immense amount of advance planning and preparation which has you out exploring the open regions extensively to eek out every advantage. This does not suit everyone and that is fine, but maybe try other similar titles on easier settings in the future if you aren't inclined to such actions. You will likely enjoy them more.

yoo play doki doki literature club. it's not an open-world game or anything like that but rather a simple visual novel with psychological horror elements. it's also somewhat similar to undertale which you have played on your channel before but it's creepier and more disturbing in a good way (and it's free :3)

On paper the game sounds amazing but I also have to say while it's not a bad game, it's also nothing ground breaking and it's open world isn't as interesting as you'd hope it to be making the gameplay-loop rather annoying and boring which is ashame really as a game set up like this has a lot of potential.

This is such a frustrating watch. You complain that there is no need for it to be open world because there is nothing to unlock. There literally is stuff to unlock, and the game tells you that. You clearly ignored the weak point system. Machines have weak points for certain arrow types. Some weak points disable attacks, others deal major damage. At one point you say the guns were the only time you felt over powerd. If you had taken to time to explore, and upgrade your gear, you can easily feel overpowered at any given time and kill most machines in 3/4 good shots. Some machines you never even figured out how to kill? I mean cmon man, the game tell you how to find this stuff out. I’m a big fan of your videos, but this was a half hearted attempt. You certain played the game, but did you actually PLAY it? Judging by the gameplay and your “review” at the end, doesn’t sound like it.

I honestly agree. this game really had no reason to be open world. I enjoyed my time with it, and I really like the lore, but the writing could be better, and while I was playing, I was always just trying to get to the next story area, so I think it would be better if it was more linear. I also think a lot of the comments I've been seeing have been unnecessarily rude. Guys... it's a video game. and not everyone likes games where you have to keep track of ten thousand different things. There are a lot of things that are easy to miss in this game, many of which are skippable, and it can be easy to get confused by the plot, especially when you don't find said plot particularly interesting. you really have to be interested in the story in order to understand it, and if you're not, it's extremely easy to tune out. All I'm saying is; please go easy on the guy. Please.

I finished this game recently and it was so underwhelming for me. I heard only good things about it, but it didn't deliver for me. I bought it years back, when I bought ps4 and bunch of games and I guess, that I should have played Horizon first, before any other game I got. The biggest mistake was to play it right after God of War 2018 which has perfect mesh of story telling and gameplay. When I played Horizon for the first time I had to promptly shut it down after first few minutes, the delivery of the story was horrible... And stories are the main thing for me in games. Second time I played Horizon was few days back, and I finished it, but it felt like a chore. I tried to play on normal difficulty, but like you experienced, the killing of enemies felt pointlessly slow, even though I somewhat understood the weak points, so I switched to story mode difficulty (you can call me noob for it, but that's how I play) and it got better. Still the story had some interesting ideas, but the delivery was bad... it felt like a tech demo for nice graphics and interesting designs.

I dont really see the appeal of open worlds, they're alright to explore at first but after the 30th piece of trash that takes 20+ minutes to get to its just not fun anymore. I have also noticed that open worlds are significantly less detailed in general compared to closed worlds. In games like doom eternal or half-life 2 you can take a good look at the environment around you and see tons of little details that make the locations you visit feel like more than a bunch of hallways and arenas. Open worlds also put a lot of focus on giant set pieces, it often feels like they put too much into these huge set pieces, to the point that the story and world building feels like an after thought in comparison.

Yeah, I agree. The smaller scale games that focus on every part of the game tend to be a lot better instead of sprawling landscapes with nothing in them.

Agreed and agreed. If you've never played them, I highly recommend trying out the Yakuza games (very small but VERY densely-packed open world with lots of interesting things to discover) or the Dishonored games (each level is a little miniature open world unto itself, once again with lots of densely-packed little details to uncover - they're also just small and linear enough that you never get *too* lost and/or distracted from your main objective).
@zackakai5173
@zackakai5173 3 месяца назад
My not-so-hot take on this topic: 95% of open world games would be drastically improved by NOT being open world. More often than not, all an open world actually does is force a pointless ten minute trek through what had might as well be empty space* between the player and what could just as easily have been the next level on a menu. Fast travel isn't a good solution either, because if I'm regularly skipping large sections of a game world because those parts of the map are just boring, then those parts shouldn't exist in the first place. The only times open world games really work for me is A, when the game is actually built around exploration as a core part of the main gameplay loop (i.e. Subnautica), B, when the open world is small enough to be densely packed with interesting content instead of just copy pasting shit (i.e. Yakuza or the individual levels in the Dishonored games, which are like their own little mini-open worlds), C, when the open world starts out fairly linear and opens up as you go (i.e. the old Pokémon games from gens 1 to about 6-7), or D, on rare occasions, when the game just wouldn't feel thematically right without a huge open world (i.e. RDR2 or Black Flag). Notice that a LOT of AAA releases nowadays are both open world and fall into none of those categories. Smaller, more focused games built around some kind of high concept will almost always yield a better result than the latest Ubisoft-style Ghost of Assassin's Cry of War: Zero Dawn Wildlands. * Especially true if you're just staring at an objective marker or the minimap the whole time and not watching the actual environment, which I think is what most players do. If you've never tried it, I highly recommend turning as much of the HUD off as you can get away with the next time you play an open world game, and watch how most games instantly become WAY more immersive.

Tbf i dont really understand so many people think open world games aint that good but for me thats one of the strong points of a game bc it feels knda freeing for example i love metro 2033 its really fun and i enjoyed the story but after finishing i can only replay the game and use a harder difficulty but its the same game and that gets kinda boring to me when i can't do anything else in the game when i play a game i like plying it for as long as i want I feel like when i can explore and just mess around open world games are great but i do understand it might be overwhealming for some ppl but i like games i can put hundereds of hours into

@@geckoraptor9397yeah Metro Exodus was really nice with it's more or less open world. Dude, please PLEASE start recording your games at 60fps. It doesn't even look like you're recording at 30fps, it feels like it's 24fps. It's hard to watch. Not having 60fps is FINE while playing a 2d pixel game like Undertale or something, but not having it for a game like this is just painful.
