Why is it not Patented ? Insert a Compact Disc into the Angle Grinder and be Amazed ! 

From someone who's spent thousands of hours using a mini grinder - when using sanding disks, they're generally backed by a mesh reinforced rubber disk with a leather or velcro surface to glue or velcro the sanding disk to. If you blow a sanding disk or pad at 13000rpm, it will flake some pieces off and give you plenty of time to stop the grinder and change the disks. At 13000, a compact disk will send glasslike shards all over the place and if someone's in the path, they're going to get hurt, or killed. This is one of the stupidest suggestions I've ever seen on YT. DO NOT attach anything to an angle grinder that wasn't specifically designed to be there. Seriously ppl... common sense will keep you alive and in one piece.

In case of broken, only a small piece of the disc with the high speed, can damage not only you, also a person close to you. It is like a knife. Normal disc has a internal net that cover the full disc in order to not throw pieces.

One of my best friends spent Christmas in the hospital four years ago, due to an accident with an angle grinder with actual discs made for the job. Even those splinter, as his did, and in this case one of the shards tore through his femoral artery. Nine units of blood and plasma, an airlift to the hospital, a ton of good luck and the fighting spirit of a lunatic, as well as his steel physique since he's been in world class in martial arts decades ago all coincided to help him survive. Multiple surgeries and being declared a medical miracle, both he and I are VERY CAREFUL whenever using angle grinders these days. This video is horrendously irresponsible. I'd highly suggest the creators of it take it down immediately, because there ARE a lot of beginner DIYers out there who don't fully understand how shockingly quick and violent accidents occur. I write this with my left thumb in a bandage after once such incident with the mitre saw two days ago, so it happens even to those of us with more sense than the creators of this video. Please do not modify power tools. They are dangerous enough as they were first created! My friend survived, though they had to take pieces of his left leg to piece together the ground meat that was left of his injured inner thigh. He's got a scar clear up to his chest, and will not be 100% again, though he does just fine at 95%. He was incredibly lucky. Others might not be.

DANGER! DO'T DO IT! The CD has no fibers which would hold pieces if disc disintegrates. If disc cracks then large pieces will fly around at high speed and may seriously injure or kill somebody.

For added safety I suggest you keep a bowl of gasoline close by, especially when sanding metal as this will allow you to cool down any surfaces that get too hot thereby preventing a potential fire.

A simple paper disc can cut things when spinning fast enough. When you are using any rotary machines like an angle grinder You also need to ensure that you fit the guard to it. this way you will have the same number of fingers at the end that you started with.

there's a reason why grinding wheels are rated for rpms. when you use something not rated for the rpms it'll basically explode and shoot the pieces everywhere. if you've ever had this happen you learn the lesson real quick. also, an orbital sandal or palm sander would've done the same thing and there would be more surface area on the sander for sanding the project more evenly. honestly, this looks like it's asking for trouble imo.

Using the plastic disc (CD) is not safe, it was never designed to be used like this and will shatter with possibly catastrophic results! You could lose an eye, especially since you took the guard off it!

I had to laugh in horror when he said "do not forget about safety" with no guard on the grinder, while using a disc not designed to go on it (which will shatter very easily). Very dangerous stuff.

Its perfectly safe and the gasoline suggestion is brilliant. People should be free to experiment and the rest of us who do fabrication for a living should try not to laugh too loudly when we hear the screams.

The glue costed more than just simply buying a sandpaper disc

There was a reason why back in the day, speed of CD Drives maxed out at like x52. It was because they shattered into hundreds of pieces inside them from centrifugal force. That is a reason, why he is "cutting" Styrofoam and basically gently stroking that piece of steel.... because it's DANGEROUS!!!

After retiring as an engineer after fifty years I genuinely thought that I’d seen every outright boneheaded dangerous thing that someone could do or try. Guess I was wrong . . . BTW do NOT try this, unless you like the idea of some time in A&E

Why yes I am patenting this idea of putting random discs on angle grinders, this is possibly my greatest invention since putting the ends of pilers in a drill chuck or throwing bricks at the wall. Truly a revolutionary idea

To make, release and then maintain this video is risking the safety of other people. This is life threatening. Putting a rarely seen warning in your text section does not make up for the fact that you should take the video down. The extreme criticism in the comment section is the result of a misleading video with a dangerous title. Anybody who uses a grinder regularly will notice how delicately the disc is used on steel. You either have already exploded a disc or know it will explode if you work with it the way you typically would. Willfully uploading something known to be dangerous is unethical. Hopefully nobody has been hurt or killed trying your experiment and, if you care about the health and safety of others, you will take it down.

Don't glue sand paper to it. Unevenly distributed glue will can cause off balance spinning and the disc to explode in multiple direction at a high velocity.

I know why it's not patented! Because it's stupid in so many ways. Besides being dangerous, there are easier and cheaper ways to do the same thing.

This guy must have seen a CD shatter and how dangerous it is, why would someone even make a video like this - that could seriously injure or even blind somebody just to make a video. I think you're going to have quite a lawsuit after some kid tries to copy your hack and loses an eye.

Most angle grinders have guards to prevent any debris from the grinding disc flying off into your face. It is usually integrated into the design of the angle grinder. The guard prevents you from using a larger disc for which the grinder was designed. Are you suggesting removing/modifying the guard on the angle grinder? I think it would be safer and wiser to buy a larger grinder.

This was just idiotic! The CD is not rated for the speed of the grinder and is definitely not designed for that type of use, it will eventually explode in someone's face. It would be a lot more sensible to use the right equipment when you consider the expense of gluing sanding discs onto the CD and the inherent danger of using makeshift garbage like what was demonstrated in the video. This idea wasn't creative, it was stupid!

You should take into account ; that when that CD Material will easily shatter under stress, and if while spinning, is similar to a granade.

How many times has the disc broken? I think there are a lot of more suitable and safer ones out there, that costs the same price as building them yourself.

spinning a polycarbonate CD or DVD at those speeds is a really, really bad idea. They're not made for that speed and will, eventually self destruct throwing shards of polycarbonate everywhere

I really think from a safety perspective that you need to be supervised at all times. Using a plastic disk (cd ) as a sander was an accident waiting to happen. Seriously you may need help.

Be careful with those discs. Commercial cutoff wheels sometime break and they hit very hard. If you've ever been hit with one you won't wear anything but a full face shield. Same with a wire brush. You can buy the flapper wheels (sanding discs) that aren't as apt to break. They're a lot cheaper than stitches and less painful.

Between the orbital pads and the glue i think it costs more than a cutting wheel.

Always, ALWAYS use the correct cutting or backing disc for the job. Anything less is stupidly dangerous and will get you well known at the ER. A metal cutting disc will blow up if you cut stone with it and vice versa.

Never take the guard off and never use discs like these that can shatter!

Very dangerous, especially without the guard on it. I’ve seen what happens when a regular disc (in this case, a cutting disc) Grenades. That will go through your face shield!

As someone that has seen a CD catastrophically fail in a CD Rom drive, I could only imagine what this "hack" would do. At least he used eye and hand protection... so there is that. I am sure that the next video he will release will be, "How To Eliminate Mice From Your Attic with Propane and a Lighter."

🫣If you push the red button on top of the unit, while tightening the disk retaining nut, it stops the disk moving. It's also useful to loosen also. You will end up with a section of cd embedded in you, however. Because no guard, and cd's are super brittle and shatter. I just hope somebody watching your vids realises it's better to let you risk permanent injury as opposed to copying your eccentric risks .

I do something similar to salvage data off old DVDRs. I made an adapter so I can put the DVD in a drill, then i spin it up and use fine abrasive paper to resurface the disc, before giving it another rip with some plastic polish.

Such a stupid idea. Using it like a normal person with some downward force would destroy it in a millisecond and if you were lucky you wouldn’t get injured in the process. I would suggest to anyone that doesn’t have much experience or is just clueless, don’t do this if you want any bodily harm.

The only difference between a hacker and a hack is the ER (Emergency Room)….I use my angle grinder to take lids of glass jars and to polish my dog. They really are good for anything. I like to take it in the bath with me to make bubbles and to rub the rough skin off my elbows and feet.

Thses hacks get more absurd by the minute.

I am often amazed by the stupidity of some people. A cheap plastic CD is no substitute for an actual grinding disc and especially not with sandpaper glued on. Ignoring the fact that doing all this would be more expensive than a dozen discs with mesh reinforcements from Harbor Freight, a CD was never designed to withstand the G forces of the 15,000 to 30,000 RPM of an angle grinder and your lungs won't be happy with the resulting plastic and metal dust either. And when one to them shatters in use, explain this to the docs and nurses in the ER. They'll all get a good laugh from it. I use my angle grinder to gut cattle panels, clean up edges, and do fairly heavy duty. This guy defied imagination with his stupidity.

Keep away ! A Compact disk has two states. A: 1 Piece.. B: Shattered into X pieces. The time difference between the two is milliseconds and the blood will be visible nearly as fast as the speed of sound as the disk shatters... and of course using it without a safety guard is a natural thing to do when saving a few $/£ on a bona fide backing disk. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, DO THIS!!! A grinding disc is dirt cheap. Cigarettes are more expensive than a single metal grinding disc which will do so much more towards not getting you into the emergency room than a goddamn compact disc.

Anyone who know angle grinders knows thin disc (the proper discs) are for cutting..... try to grind with them the shatter. CD discs at a few hundred rpm when that shatters....... dont come crying to me when it shatters and blinds you.

The CD angle grinder hack is cool, but it's clear this individual is not proficient in the use of an angle grinder. You don't need to tighten it that much, regardless if it's a cut-off wheel or grinding disk. As someone who uses an angle grinder several hours a day, it's just a waste of time. Depress and hold the red Spindle Lockout button located on the top, back side of the grinder to stop it free spinning and torque the retaining collar by hand. For 99% of use cases, that is absolutely adequate.

CPSC and OSHA should be monitoring this channel.
